    This is a flat four cylinder 525cc engine designed and produced for the US military. They were used for generators, water pumps, blowers, and more. We got this one from a friend, then Ike went out and bought two more from the military surplus store! They sound like miniature Volkswagen Beetle engines. The packaging is very small on these engines, and they only weight 75 lbs. With a little more tuning, they could make the perfect oddball go kart or mini bike engine!

    OMFG!!!! IM FREAKING SPEACHLESS!!! ive always loved anything old,military,surplus. mainly because any item found from those categories is almost guarranteed to be, old and\or quirky. but my fav's are PONY motors. but they tend to be small 2 strokers or diesels. which are usally too big and heavy. but now!!! yall are freaking awesome

    • @goosenotmaverick1156
      @goosenotmaverick1156 10 місяців тому +2

      I love all the different pony motors especially the weird ones, I think they made a small CI V4 gas for large diesel engines. Fascinating to have to start an engine, to start your engine. Using coolant from pony motor to pre-heat the larger engine was a genius move if you ask me.
      I love all old engines, small, large, especially the weird, and the small diesel stuff.
      My dream is to have one of the small Detroit's like a 2-53 I think? They're really rare, I may have to compromise for something like a 3-4 cylinder 53 or 71. But I like them all.

    6hp Stock horsepower according to the manual that came with my 4a032 military engine. Mine was brand spanking new in the crate. In reality they are 12-14hp stock. With a modded or different carburetor you can get 16-20hp out of them fairly easy.

    • @meegstomtom
      @meegstomtom 9 місяців тому

      In my experience a lot of these old engines where low power which added to reliability. This motor even at 15hp would never break because of it. Like the old Wisconsin twin cylinders. They have to last in all sorts of conditions. Often rough and crappy conditions

    • @Pugjamin
      @Pugjamin 9 місяців тому +1

    Those flat 4's were made by Continental Motors for the military. They also made a single and an inline twin version for smaller gensets, air pumps, etc. I have a twin cylinder version sitting out in my shop that I had modified for an off-road trike.The motors are very well built, but the magnetos on just about all of them were trash. Mine was points ignition, so I eventually converted it to battery ignition with a coil off of a blown Honda 550. The Honda coils are perfect because of the 'wasted spark ignition', as the Continental twin fires every 360 degrees. The intake runners are relatively tiny so they don't make much horsepower unless you make custom runners with individual carbs. They're also very low compression ratio (like 7.5 or 8:1), so good torque, but not much horsepower. The most you'd probably get out of that flat 4 is maybe 15 hp. or so on a single carb.😉

    I think I have a few parts laying around for these. They made a single and a twin cylinder variant as well. I've had multiple of the twin cylinders and one single. They wake up nicely with a bigger carb if its tuned right. One thing to note, try to avoid over-revving these. They are near bulletproof until you start pushing the revs, which is their one weakness.

    That is a 4A032 General Purpose engine, they were used for generators, water pumps, air compressors, and other places where an engine of that size was needed. A larger size titled 4A084 was also ordered by the military. It was rated for a conservative 6 HP. I have one still in the crate, new never had oil in it. A starter was optional. A BMW 318i starter will fit with some slight modifications. Really good engines with decent torque for their size, but limited on the amount of RPM as they do not have oil channels for the crankshaft.

    @michaelsullivan2361 9 місяців тому

    I was a mechanic/motor sergeant in the 80’s. Had a lot of experience with those engines.
    They were part of “the military standard” series of engines. All sharing standardized bore and stroke, common:
    Pistons
    Rods
    Pushrods
    Heads
    Valves
    Rockers
    They were made in:
    Single cylinder (1hp)
    Twin cylinder (2hp)
    Four cylinder (6hp)
    They were purely industrial designs, made to run 24/7 at rated horsepower in all environments.
    Really well built to high standards.
    Being industrial, they were optimized for longevity and parts commonality over performance.
    In the 70’ the army did a study to improve performance and efficiency. Redesigned the heads with higher compression, correctly sized valves (the originals had the same size intake & exhaust valves) and improved cam profiles. Result basically tripled the horsepower of each, while improving efficiency. Without a reduction in longevity.
    By the time testing was complete, the army had decided on dieselization of the entire fleet, including small engines. So the improved design was never adopted.

    That new home for a refugee military motor has awesome written all over it; I figure you two for just the guys to wring the potential out of it! When you get all four cylinders firing, you might want a bit smaller gear on the axle- while you are in there, a .75 inch or 1.00 inch axle might also be a thought. And maybe a bit bigger gas tank to feed the drinking problem. You didn't day, but 1:19 for a sick motor and a cart not really gone through was pretty quick all things considered. Just under a minute will get anything on the board; three cylinders of this thing will do that!

    That engine could be cool in the right project. I would try to get the factory carb working or replaced. C&C has had a checkered history when it comes to carb tuning.

    10ish on a good day till the heads were redesigned then it made 16ish hp. But thats military ratings. I have a 1 of the 4A032 engines and 3 of the 2A016 engines. They are all great engines. I am happy to see you guys making one work!

    @carsandcameras i have some info you might appreciate; the "fuel cutoff" yall mentioned is the air\fuel. The other twisty bit higher on the carb is for governor rpm. Dont undo the vertical screw on top. The original carb is probably still good but dont leave gasoline in it, ethanol will rot the seals and arent really available.
    The original service and operation manuals are readily available online so you can preset the carb thats pretty sensitive about the afr and governor adjustment.
    I have one of the complete generators with that exact motor from '74, got it for free after itd sat outside for a decade or two. Your guys motor didnt sound right, they are pretty smooth sounding once dialed. Also, theres no ignition advance.
    Thanks for your fun content

    one trick my dad used to do with electric motors, which should also work on the starter. take it apart, get the windings out or get clear access to them. clean them via electronic cleaner. let it dry. then soak the windings with rattle can lacquer. about half the time it will fix the motor and make it like new. sometimes they get weak or stop due to the coating going away on the windings. but between cleaning them and recoating them it can make them functional again. that or if you have a local place the rewinds generators, alternators and starters, pay them to just redo it.

    • @spicydeath82
      @spicydeath82 10 місяців тому

      anyways, after you get that motor running good and get the starter fixed, it's be cool to ss if it'll fit inside the mini car.

    You should find yourselves an air cooled Wisconsin 4 cylinder with a 12volt system. I think they’re about 30 - 35 hp and you can still get parts for them and they’re easy to work on and very dependable. You might have to reinforce the frame a little but, that shouldn’t be a big deal for you guys.

    I've seen these engines used on ultralight aircraft. It's a teledyne/continental. It may remind you of a vw because they're both 4 cyl air-cooled boxers,..but it's even more like a baby airplane engine - though folks have been flying behind vw engines for decades. Hardly any of these have been used - not enough h.p.'s vs. weight. They're built like little tanks though.

    How about making one that the military could use with the same engine? I am thinking of one that is larger with a good seat. off road wheels and tires. Perhaps some light armor protection for the driver. Perhaps a cargo shelf over the engine in back for supplies. As silent as possible. It could be for scouting or anything that might need a lower profile to remain out of sight as much as possible. People have used those engines for small homebuilt airplanes due to their small size.
