    As a Brit of advanced years I've been into coddling for many years. Coddlers are very collectable and a beautiful way to prepare eggs.

      Since you have many years experience would you be able to tell me how to get the whites cooked and yolk soft or runny? Im cooking it like above but for much longer. By the time the whites are cooked so is the yolk. Any savy tips would be helpful to help me out on what I am doing wrong? The egg coddler goes into rolling boiling water and water up to where the rim begins. Her egg in this video looked right on. But not what i got going on.

    I've just acquired a pair from my local Red Cross Charity Shop, Royal Worcester Blackberry design identical to yours Cathie. I had no idea what they were, thinking they were fancy egg cups, until the lady at the counter said they were egg coddlers. I'm looking forward to using them on a regular basis after watching your excellent video. Thanks for sharing!

    Well, bless your heart! I've seen egg coddlers @ Goodwill, etc. & didn't know what they were for, then found 2 packed away in Grandma's things & still didn't know what they were for...now I know! Very pretty coddlers! I also collect egg coddlers and have some in different patterns but by the same manufacturer to yours but most of mine are clear glass coddlers made by Pyrex in the 1930's, McKee Bros. around 1917, some French made Pyrex ones and German Jenaer Glass coddlers. I like to crack the egg into a measuring cup with a spout which makes it easier to pour the egg into the coddler with no spills. Your egg is cooked to perfection! I love to add a tiny bit of butter or about 2 tsps. of half and half and some crumbled crisp bacon on top of the egg.....yum!! I also love to toast a slice of homemade sourdough bread then cut it into strips to dip into that yummy, runny, beautiful bright yellow yolk from eggs laid by one of the hens from my backyard flock. Lovely video...thank you!

    My husband is an antique dealer, and we see these often as we scour yard sales and auctions, and when he does estate clean-outs. Often with the clean-outs, the owners don't want much of anything anymore except for some furniture, sentimental things, and ephemera, as many are on their way to retirement homes, or to live in smaller homes or with their children. We donate items that won't bring them much money to various places like women's shelters and half-way houses (I think they call it 'transitional living') and longer-term homeless shelters. I've seen so many of these coddlers, and I never labeled them, simply donated them trusting that whomever was the recipient would know how to use them...because all I knew that you put eggs in them and cooked them, but not whether it was in the oven or stovetop or microwave! (Most of these were by Fire-King/Anchor-Hocking, so were safe for use in the oven and microwave!)
    I found your video because I was thinking of using them soon. Today was what felt to me like the first "real" day of autumn, with 40mph wind gusts and chillier temperatures (Yesterday the temps dropped from the high 70's to the low 50's, and that's BEFORE the wind chill!) and when it's cooler, cooking is so much more fun for me. So I would really like to say "Thank you!" for your very clear description of how to use them! The next time I donate any, I will not only label them with the pattern and maker and age, but I'll also put in the directions, in case they aren't sure like I was! Take care and thank you again!

      They do - I think it was Food52 I saw them on. If that isn’t successful, Amazon (& others) has jars called Weck Jars - clear and with tops that clip on. I’m sure they’d be great as long as you get the right size, and the advantage of seeing if the egg is done seems like a big one.

  • @lucyneale

    Cathie, When do you start counting your 5 minutes? When you put them in the water, or when it first starts to boil? And does it make a difference whether the eggs come out of the frog or are at room temp when you start? I have a glass microwavable coddler I got in Germany and it is cracked and I can't find another one. I put aged Gouda cheese and tabasco in the bottom, then the egg, then more cheese and tabasco. To die for!. With the glass coddler, you can see whether they are done to your liking or not.

    • @CathieHeath
      @CathieHeath  6 років тому +1

      Mine are directly from the refrigerator. Generally, I bring the water to a boil, then lower the coddlers into the boiling water. Otherwise, I start timing when the water comes to a boil. I'm going to have to try your recipe. It sounds delicious!

    Why not just boil the egg in its shell?

    • @CatherineHeath
      @CatherineHeath 2 місяці тому +1

      Coddled eggs are much more than boiled eggs. You can put all kinds of different ingredients in the coddler with the raw egg. Butter, crumbled bacon, bits of ham, shredded cheese, snipped chives...the list is endless depending on your tastes. This video was meant to show the basics of egg coddling. Hope you're inspired to try coddling some eggs someday.

    I inherited a coddler without a lid. Can you poach an egg if the coddler isn't covered?

    • @CatherineHeath
      @CatherineHeath 8 місяців тому

      Honestly not sure about poaching. But there's a difference between poached eggs and coddled eggs. You'd need the lid to coddle them. Good luck!

      @@CatherineHeath Oh, sorry, I should have said "coddle" instead of "poach". I'm still curious as to what would happen if I tried to coddle an egg without the lid. I may have to give it a try even if i end up wasting an egg : )

    • @CatherineHeath
      @CatherineHeath 8 місяців тому

      @@keppela1 It wouldn't hurt to try. Perhaps putting some foil securely on the top? Not sure, but as you said the worst that can happen is an egg may be wasted. Again...good luck! :)

    DO you start timing once the water comes to a boil or when you turn on the heat or...?

      I lower them into boiling water just up to the threads and begin timing immediately.

    • @AvalonMorley
      @AvalonMorley 8 років тому

      +steve720720 One difference is that, as wonderful as eggs cooked within their shells can be, you can't add anything to them inside there. Then too, if you have use for egg shell that has not been cooked (as, for instance, in coffee grounds, or to be finely ground and ingested for calcium), this allows those shells to be used.

    Ох и любят англичане выпендриться. Мы делаем то же самое просто в скорлупе, как в общем то и они всегда это делали, пока не придумали эти кодлеры. Просто следи за процессом: 3-4 минуты - в смятку, 5-6 минут - в крутую ... и всё!

    Why does it take so long to show how to cook these type of eggs and also why show the faces, focus on the actual process of cooking. AND why use thousands of words when a lot fewer would suffice? A lot of editing us required, me thinks!
