No experience will crush your soul like taking public transit in Ottawa, Canada. By contrast, I went to Stockholm two years ago and I was stunned at the efficiency.
Great mix of describing possible corporate ineptitude, but cut through with that amazing art. Made me homesick for when I visited back in August - oh, but, one question! I loved the tunnelbana, but adored the buses far more (I saw so much daily, above ground, so favoured them): will the change to Connecting Stockholm affect the buses, and the associated commuter ferries? Thanks so much for the content!
Thank you! I think that there are no plans to cut down any bus or ferry routes (more than what they've already done in 2024), so that's good at least. And yeah buses are nice but I find the subway faster if I just want to get transported to a place!
One interesting fact is that Go-Ahead changed ownership in 2022 after the scandal as they were subject to take-over from an Australian company and a Spanish company so hopefully that has shooken up the company enough to preform well.
I want to add some context to why they stop the trains when there a leaves on the track, as when a train runs over them they make a past that becomes a lubricant, meaning that if you drive a train at speed when there are leaves on the track it would no longer have effective breaks hens it becomes unsafe. There are awesome videos about this on youtube if you search it. But i am surprised we haven't invented a way around it yet. As a swed my self i know that with every autumn leaves are guaranteed.

Snow and leaves are pretty much guaranteed, so maybe...time to invent some things to take care of it? Can't they run small "cleaners" on the tracks in between the trains, to clear out stuff or something?
It is not only a Swedish problem. Finland have the same issues every autumn. You can not just simply build around that unless you want to dig the tracks underground. But such a project would cost and also disrupt the entire system for years.

I loved the underground system in Stockholm. And the art work truly is fabulous. I have never heard of Go Ahead.... Maybe they run under a different name in the UK? We complain because French and Dutch companies run some of our rail lines and the fares are extortionate. There is a movement in the UK to have the trains come back under state control. I think this is how things should be. As for the leaves on the line, yes we have this too. Oh, and also "the wrong type of snow", whatever that is!. Thank you for this wonderful art trip around the stations.
I'm no expert when it comes to British railway operations so I had to trust online articles on this one. But oh well, let's hope I wasn't too incorrect. Either way, it does look quite lovely right! I absolutely adore some of these stations...except for the one I live at 😅
I'm not an expert either, Miro, but I think that different companies running things are more interested in their stockholders than getting people from A to B. I loved using the Stockholm underground, mostly for the art. A great way of allowing artists exposure.

I've been to Stockholm twice, once in winter and once in summer. That was quite a difference. I love the place and hope to visit again in the future. Since I've last been there the C30 stock has been introduced, so riding those is only one of many reasons to visit again. As for your statement "In 2025 things can get a lot worse", that seems to apply to many more things than just the Stockholm metro...

Some of the UK lines were run by a joint company called GoVia with both Go Ahead and a partner Via. I hope it was the latter that caused th eproblems and that Go Ahead, if working alone, will do better in Stockholm. (I won't hold my breath though).

Good video as usual. I really enjoy your videos about our rail network. There are a lot of good information and A LOT of stuff I didn't know. :) However, MTR Tunnelbana only drives the trains (and repairs them) and make sure stations are clean and functioning. Rail tracks are repaired and maintained by Strukton. But the rail track system is also old. It is not MTRs fault (or any other operator that have or will be operating the metro in the future) when there is a failure in the signal system or the rail tracks. Also there is a difference between commuter trains and metro trains. We metro train drivers do not have the problem commuter train drivers had last year and we are in general happy :) Also that decision was not made by MTR Pendeltåg. It was a political decision. Any operator would face the same problem if such a big change would occur. It is not only the commuter rail though that lost or will lose their onboard staff. Roslagsbanan face the same political decision.
That's a fair point - some things are just under the operators' control. I guess there's always more things to improve in my research, so I'm happy that you could supply additional points like these! Cheers, and let's hope subway drivers can keep happy in the future as well :D
This is why we in Copenhagen have an Underground, without a driver! Also the local Cph. trains (S-tog) are intended to be run without drivers. We have Flying Controls constantly walking the trains but flashing a Card at the "Blue Post" is legal for a ride as also when entering or leaving trains or busses, even boats crossing the harbour. If changing means of transport, wait till the end before flashing the End stop
@@ThreeStarVagabond No problems when running during odd hours then, so it runs 24 hours, and very often? And we near constantly add new lines to the original net, so it now covers the Central town and out into suburbs.

At the start you not always ended up at the intended place, but after adjustments it now functions mostly flawlessly, to my knowledge 😄? And you are able to sit in front, looking at the tracks, also diving below the sea (Nyhavn😁). Sadly in the old part of town some buildings now have noise from below, when trains are passing. We haven't got any bedrock in Cph! If interested You are able to find a Cph. Metro Map here, of course
Your subway system is quite new and was built to be driver less. Stockholm Metro system was built long before. To make it driverless now you have to change the entire train system which is very costly. And it will disrupt the system for years to come. But the yellow line that they are building now will be driverless.

This really is just a case of MTR being completely thrown out after their debocle with the SL comuter trains 2023. Never have there been a time where trains would be cancelled so suddenly at such a massive scale, what other company had a consistenly above 25% departures canceled.

From my point of view, it’s unlikely that Go-Ahead Group and ComfortDelGro-operating under the brand “Connecting Stockholm”-will be any better. One of these companies is based in the UK and the other in Singapore, and both have faced serious criticism recently, as you mentioned in the video. One of the saddest aspects of this situation is that the workers might end up in even worse conditions than they already face.

Go-Ahead took over the Norwegian railway line Sørlandsbanen just a few years ago. It’s now been decided that the state owned Vy will be taking it back in 2027. That says something.
Why doesn't Stockholm run its own Metro? Is this due to yet more EU interference? It is very time consuming and wasteful putting operation out to contract every few years. The staff already know how to run the system so just employ them. I like your stations.

The Boston MBTA recently finally removed most of its subway slow zones (for one line the first time in 15 years!) after a new manager named Philip Eng joined. But all that work this year might go out the door... The city is about to head to a fisical cliff with existing debt and reduced transport funding from this upcoming presidency 😢
GoAhead haven’t done a superb job in Norway either. I’m just glad MTR is gone, from both Mälartåg and the commuter trains. And soon the subway. One less Chinese company in Sweden is just good overall.

Go ahead and take the bus instead 🤷♀️ , public transport is a bit hit and miss the world over. But I have to agree with the train drivers there does need to be additional staff either on the trains or in the station. Central Station in Stockholm, it's very overwhelming (I get confused easily), but Paris Gar du Nord, I am sure, has 2 time zones, complete nightmare. Clearly I need to come back and see the art especially.
Bus is...actually pretty okay. But the subway is really fast and convenient, so it's hard to ignore it completely! But yeah, the art does make it a bit of an experience really
It seems that all of northern and western Europe has gone backwards ..it used to be the progressive part of the world. I researched protests in Sweden in the early 1900s... There were like 6,000 strikes ,protests,and manifestations in the Early 1900s.. that's a lot for how low the population was then.. after that. Sweden was on the upward swing for the economy and rights...but now things aren't going well..the train drivers being treated badly.. that's terrible.
Agreed! There's a lot of unhappiness going around these days - and I'm not sure if strikes are even working or helping. It's a rough situation for many occupations (not just train drivers), and I just hope that things will improve once the economic situation improves.
@ThreeStarVagabond During that time in the early 1900s some strikes were accompanied by violence.. The military came in and shot and killed some strikers after they had allready won .. This was in Sweden..... after the left center party dominated for many years there was agreements to not have strikes as long as everything was fair.. this is stuff i read ..but probably you know more growing up there.. In my country there was so much violence accompanied by the striking to get our rights as in work and civil rghts.. now it could be all over as January 21 arrives with the 🍊 man taking the charge

That's quite some time ago! But yeah things have really gone downhill (even though I seem to recall that the blue line was closed a lot due to building Tvärbanan back then).

Yeah one part of the blue line goes there - the other goes via Solna / Kista etc. I think it was closed around summer 2015 or so. Or maybe 2013-2014 or so. I lived in Solna then and I remember having to take bus instead.

Also that decision was not made by MTR Pendeltåg. It was a political decision. Any operator would face the same problem if such a big change would occur. It is not only the commuter rail though that lost or will lose their onboard staff. Roslagsbanan face the same political decision.

This is why we in Copenhagen have an Underground, without a driver! Also the local Cph. trains (S-tog) are intended to be run without drivers. We have Flying Controls constantly walking the trains but flashing a Card at the "Blue Post" is legal for a ride as also when entering or leaving trains or busses, even boats crossing the harbour. If changing means of transport, wait till the end before flashing the End stop
I'm all for that actually (sorry all train drivers!) So I wouldn't mind seeing it in Stockholm as well
@@ThreeStarVagabond No problems when running during odd hours then, so it runs 24 hours, and very often? And we near constantly add new lines to the original net, so it now covers the Central town and out into suburbs.

At the start you not always ended up at the intended place, but after adjustments it now functions mostly flawlessly, to my knowledge 😄? And you are able to sit in front, looking at the tracks, also diving below the sea (Nyhavn😁). Sadly in the old part of town some buildings now have noise from below, when trains are passing. We haven't got any bedrock in Cph!

Your subway system is quite new and was built to be driver less. Stockholm Metro system was built long before. To make it driverless now you have to change the entire train system which is very costly. And it will disrupt the system for years to come. But the yellow line that they are building now will be driverless.

This really is just a case of MTR being completely thrown out after their debocle with the SL comuter trains 2023. Never have there been a time where trains would be cancelled so suddenly at such a massive scale, what other company had a consistenly above 25% departures canceled.
Yeah I did find it pretty funny that MTR had no plans to object to the decision. It's almost like they understand how distrusted they are

It really is concerning that Trafikförvaltningen/SL chooses companies that aren’t based in Sweden, especially from a security perspective. From my point of view, it’s unlikely that Go-Ahead Group and ComfortDelGro-operating under the brand “Connecting Stockholm”-will be any better. One of these companies is based in the UK and the other in Singapore, and both have faced serious criticism recently, as you mentioned in the video.
One of the saddest aspects of this situation is that the workers might end up in even worse conditions than they already face.

I just found out that the Copenhagen Metro operates 24 hours, even to the airport. Does the Stockholm metro run all night long, as well? I think this is your best video, yet! I thought Helsinki was pretty good, but their metro system isn't nearly as beautiful, notwithstanding the tacky artwork.
Go-Ahead took over the Norwegian railway line Sørlandsbanen just a few years ago. It’s now been decided that the state owned Vy will be taking it back in 2027. That says something.

Why doesn't Stockholm run its own Metro? Is this due to yet more EU interference? It is very time consuming and wasteful putting operation out to contract every few years. The staff already know how to run the system so just employ them.

I really don't know, but I'd imagine that it's because they lack the competence themselves. I imagine that they have knowledge about the subways but not about operations and maintenance(?) Or yeah, it could be EU regulations too. Or maybe they're just lazy and want to outsource things...

Detta låter inte lovande tycker mtr generellt sett varit bra när det gäller tunnelbanan. Det är många avgångar per dag och generellt har över 95% funkat bra. Fattar inte varför de inte förlänger mtr tunnelbanan. Connecting Stockholm låter som ett nystartat företag somm gått dåligt i andra länder hoppas det inte blir lika dåligt här i Stockholm. 😳😃

The Boston MBTA recently finally removed most of its subway slow zones (for one line the first time in 15 years!) after a new manager named Philip Eng joined. But all that work this year might go out the door... The city is about to head to a fisical cliff with existing debt and reduced transport funding from this upcoming presidency 😢

GoAhead haven’t done a superb job in Norway either. I’m just glad MTR is gone, from both Mälartåg and the commuter trains. And soon the subway. One less Chinese company in Sweden is just good overall.

Go ahead and take the bus instead 🤷♀️ , public transport is a bit hit and miss the world over. But I have to agree with the train drivers there does need to be additional staff either on the trains or in the station.
Central Station in Stockholm, it's very overwhelming (I get confused easily), but Paris Gar du Nord, I am sure, has 2 time zones, complete nightmare. Clearly I need to come back and see the art especially.
Bus is...actually pretty okay. But the subway is really fast and convenient, so it's hard to ignore it completely! But yeah, the art does make it a bit of an experience really

It seems that all of northern and western Europe has gone backwards ..it used to be the progressive part of the world. I researched protests in Sweden in the early 1900s... There were like 6,000 strikes ,protests,and manifestations in the Early 1900s.. that's a lot for how low the population was then.. after that. Sweden was on the upward swing for the economy and rights...but now things aren't going well..the train drivers being treated badly.. that's terrible.
Agreed! There's a lot of unhappiness going around these days - and I'm not sure if strikes are even working or helping. It's a rough situation for many occupations (not just train drivers), and I just hope that things will improve once the economic situation improves.
@ThreeStarVagabond During that time in the early 1900s some strikes were accompanied by violence.. The military came in and shot and killed some strikers after they had allready won .. This was in Sweden..... after the left center party dominated for many years there was agreements to not have strikes as long as everything was fair.. this is stuff i read ..but probably you know more growing up there.. In my country there was so much violence accompanied by the striking to get our rights as in work and civil rghts.. now it could be all over as January 21 arrives with the 🍊 man taking the charge

That's quite some time ago! But yeah things have really gone downhill (even though I seem to recall that the blue line was closed a lot due to building Tvärbanan back then).
@@ThreeStarVagabond Hmm... Does the blue line go to Rinkeby and Tensta (i might remember wrong)? We went to visit Tensta at Christmas Day or day before that. At least then we went there from T-Centra (if i remember right) with tunnelbana.
Yeah one part of the blue line goes there - the other goes via Solna / Kista etc. I think it was closed around summer 2015 or so. Or maybe 2013-2014 or so. I lived in Solna then and I remember having to take bus instead.
