    In this video I begin the process of replacing the complete front seat bottom box spring assembly on our W126. The new units are from a later W126, which apparently has stiffer springs.
    Observations: The more I looked at my old seat bottom and at the new one,
    it looks like someone may have simply removed a broken spring from my old seat and not replaced it. In addition, the new seat bottom looks as though the additional springs are new. Note the grey color of the new springs. Trying to figure out what has transpired over the course of 36 years is challenging!
    I purchased the replacement seat bottoms from Ebay.
    I could have removed the seat back prior to removing the cover from the bottom.
    Viewers: I'd be interested in your opinions on these seat springs. Please comment below.

    This is great comprehensive work. The seat bottoms from these 80's benz's were always baffling to me. Beautifully engineered, but when they sag, it makes for such an annoying ride. The Gen 2 definitlely feel like a huge improvement. I actually stuffed a bunch of foam pool noodles in the seat bottom springs of an old W123 I had, which works surprisingly well while awaiting a proper repair. Thanks again for sharing your efforts!

      Thanks! Now the clean up work begins. Need to remove corrosion, do some painting and lubricate.

    Great work!
    The springs you are missing at 11:36 are the ones used for SA code 562 Vordersitz rechts verstärkt
    which means reeinforced frontseat on the right, code 561 would be the same for the driver seat.
    So this has nothing to do with an "economy" version, its just the normal version.
    Thanks a lot for your videos, found some good tips here.

    great video as usual especially from someone seeing these seats for the first time. Good problem solving. Two comments, one..... my 1985 original seats have the pleats running all the way to the front edges and my experience says your seat upholstery was swapped and your springs are original. The foam inserts were available direct from Mercedes to increase firmness in both versions of the seat bottoms you have. They are still available from at least one of the online vendors and I have stuck these in my (pre 1986 version) seats. Foam inserts are MUCH more dense and durable than pool noodles. They help somewhat but aren't a complete game changer. Got two like new seats from a pic n pull last month (my covers were cracked and torn), and somebody (in a SEVERE breach of junkyard etiquette) stole my craftsman power drill battery I was using to move the seats right from under my eyes!!

      Yeah I agree that the upholstery on these seats was either obtained from a higher end W126 or was after market. Either way it is good high quality leather. One note: I forgot to double twist the bottom cardboard piece before tucking it into the seat frame. I did this later and it tightened up the cushion considerably. These seats are very comfortable now. I used foam from Hobby Lobby. LMAO

    My Gen I SEC was owned by a tiny little gal weighing no more than 120 pounds so the seats are still great. I bought the car two years ago with about 104k miles. It has 112.5k as of this week. I know guys who have used pool noodles for their 123 and 126 Benz seats as it is a common fix for an annoyingly difficult problem to resolve. Spring Fatigue is just as common as breaks. My first SEC had severely fatigued springs, but with no breaks. I’m 200 pounds so I wonder when my driver’s seat will start to sag from my weight.

      On car seats in general: It never ceases to amaze me the damage that some folks cause to car seats. I see driver's seats that look like they have been bludgeoned to death with a meat clever. I'm a hefty 200 as well and I've never done any harm to a seat in any car I've ever owned. My honest opinion is that Mercedes simply listened to an accountant when they designed the front seats in these cars. They could have done a better job.

      The upholstery has a rigid lip that is held in a channel under the seat frame. That lip will wind back upon itself once to tighten things up and then it slips into the channel on the frame. Kind of hard to explain in writting. Once you get the seat out, you'll be able to see what I am talking about.

    I’m having an issue where my passenger seat, in my 83 300sd which is identical to your 84, will move backwards but I can’t get it to move forwards. This video was very informative and a bit scary as I think need to pull the whole seat out to check the tracks...

      I'd be willing to bet that your problem is in the switch on the door. However if nothing else works, tap into the power harness under the front of the seat and apply power to pin 3 and ground to pin 4. See if the seat will move forward.

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  4 роки тому

      Remembering back last summer when I first bought this car, I could not get the seat to move DOWNWARD. After a while I found that the previous owner had reinstalled one of the power seat knobs on the door upside down. This prevented the driver from moving the internal switch far enough to activate the downward direction. Try pulling the knobs off the power seat door switch and moving the little levers with your fingers.

    Hello, I have taken out the wiring harness from the engine bay & battery etc....Now I need to remove the seats just as you have shown. However I need to be able to move the seats forward to undo the back nut? How can I do that ??? Thanks Bill

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  2 роки тому

      You will need to disconnect the seat wiring harness under the seat. Run long hot and ground jumper wires from the seat harness connector to the battery. Probe each wire on the connector to see the effect on the seat. Move the rear or the seat as high as it will go and also forward to get to the bolts. In one of these seat videos I make the seat move while it is sitting on my work bench. I think I recall noting which connectors do what but I'm not sure. Regardless you can try 12v on each connector to see what the seat does. It won't hurt anything. You can figure out which wire is ground by doing an impedance check to ground.

      Fantastic reply, I'll try using the 12 volt battery...and as you say can't do any harm. I'm a novice so I really appreciate your prompt reply, as my enthusiasm rises & falls depending on my successes, and I don't work on it every day. Really clear videos....Thanks....Bill D

    I'm going to have to dig into my drivers seat to see why my headrest doesn't go up and down like it should. Everything else on it except the upholstery is fine. No sagging. I hope I don't have to take the seat out.
    That was only 19 minutes long. I would rather have continued till finished.

    For sure Europeans of the 1980s were lighter weight. No Engineering foresight can keep up with America's obesity.
