Use different languages (localization) [Game Maker Studio 2 | Advanced]

- This video tutorial shows you what localization is for GameMaker Studio.
The idea is quite simple. You want to use different languages for your game to reach a bigger audience. But this isn't as easy it as it seems.
So what can you do? You can locally create data structures like an array or ds grids/lists to hotswap to the currently used language. The downsize is that you have to send the whole project for spellchecking/correcting by others.
What you can do is have an exel and convert it into a .csv, but this works only for the latin alphabet because the format doesn't include cyrillic or other characters. So, the easiest and most used idea is to use .ini files (basically a .txt format) to load the correct languages with the correct strings to your game. This you can do in one single .ini or several language .inis which have the same structure but different translation on these data points.
To achieve the thing you see on the screen you need Scribble:

And for dialog Ui you can utalize the new 9-silce feature:
• Nine slices ninja styl...
If you are unsure how a .ini works, I got you covered:

Nice tutorial, im watching from Brazil. Sempre assisto seus videos!
Vocês do Brasil são meu segundo maior público. Muito obrigado do meu lado!
THANKS for this tutorial.
Hi 1up I'm brazilian and i love your videos, they r so good ❤
Thanks mate! Shout out to my brazilian viewers, you guys are my second largest audience. For that I thank you guys a lot.
@@1upIndie (:
After 3 years and some GMS updates later, could be a json localization tutorial viable now under this regard?
Thanks for so many years of service and great content.
Hm, good idea I will make one.
@@1upIndie epic! Thanks!
Yooo thank you so much, I needed that
thanks from brazil there man
Ah, my 3rd biggest audience! Thanks for watching my videos.
Thanks for this!
came from Brazil, nice video my dude
You are welcome. No, idea why but you guys are the 2nd biggest audience I have, so thank you for watching!
I've done some testing and it turns out that CSV files DO in fact work! though for non-ASCII letter sets (like Cyrillic or Greek) you have to add the letters in your font's range in GM yourself as ascii doesn't include them.
also the gibberish you showed is excel's fault. if you open the CSV in something like notepad++ it should read out right. (note I used Google Sheets to make my CSV, idk if it makes a difference though)
ik this is 3 years too late but I hope this helps anyone looking through the comments
Thanks for this tutorial
I found a solution for the CSV file. sent you an email about it. I just tested it and it worked!
Really? I didn't see an e-mail send to me. Can you alternativly post this in my discord channel.
No problemo i will post it there
Thanks that was really helpful! Curious what the game was you showed at the tail end.
Thank, that is 8DOORS: ARUM'S AFTERLIFE ADVENTURE. Very good Metroidvania title.
Please help teach how to make mu games that are certified in other languages.
What are mu games??
I was wondering if it is possible to use chinese in Game maker. I guess it is possible to brute force it like importing only characters that you use and arrange them manually - like Add font from sprite bind it to random letters and replace text with appropriate chars...
Yes you can. This simply means you have to add range(s) to the fonts you are using.
thankx man, obrigado.
Hey man can you activate the subtitles in your videos please? I talk spanish and is a little hard for me understand english because I use the subtitles to know what people are saying
Ehm, not sure what you mean. Subtitles are being generated automatically by UA-cam in english. You can change the auto transcription in any language you need.
@@1upIndieyea I know but in the phone I cant activate the subtitles, but now I can
English: I am from Brazil, but you should localize your games to all languages (including Japanese)
English: I hope i get an comment answer after comment this!
Eh, to all? But hello back to brazil, you are my 2dn biggest watch base, so a big thank your from my side! I do agree, localising is important.
@@1upIndie for all languages
why not structs?
What for? They suck. I already though of making a video about structs and then after researching it was like... that is pretty much useless in GameMaker. The use cases are not as vital as let's say in Java where everything is build around classes/constructers etc. .
@@1upIndie i mean, there can be pure object solution. Just parse that from json array and voila
"en": [{"id": "hello", "valu"': "Hello world"},...]. Csv tables have problems with special chars and ,; Inis is old practice.
Structs slow a bit now, they needs memoisation work. Just dont hate constructors, they can be better solution in some situations. Of course here this will be redundant.
You should put "(Brazil)" After the "Portuguese" because Portugal and Brazil have a different portuguese
Thanks for sharing, I was not aware of that. I thought portugese is the offical language and diviations/dialects are bound to countries/parts of regions.
Spending over half the video describing methods that don't work felt like a waste of time.
Hm, that does not sound good. Sorry to hear that. Maybe another content creator will do a better job then me, I recommend Shaun Spalding. www.youtube.com/@ShaunJS
Portugal colonized Brazil just for people to use the Brazilian flag instead of the Portuguese lmao
Eh, yup. I just showed the Brazilian flag because my second biggest audience comes from Brazil, followed by Russia. So this is just a little appretiation to my guys on the other side of the world.
America (big chunk of the north also) was once a spanish colony, then they pretty much fked up and USA is not a vasal (not any more) state of the British Empire. History always got some plot twists in the end.
Brazil its way better then Portugual. So porque falam brasileiro europeu, acham q é gnt
Os cara roubou nosso ouro 😡
kinda fair tbh, i mean, brazil has like 70million people playing video games
that's like 7 portugal
"Raus hier" in German isnt the right word for quitting a game. It would fit better if you use "Beenden" instead. Just saying xD
