Thanks man, long time landscaper, rookie arborist. excellent explaination and details provided to actually make me feel confident enough to go help some more customers out. great video
Thanks for the information Bino. I missed this video when you put it out due to being out of town without the internet. I always tell people that you shouldn't top the tree as per one of your previous videos. This video reinforces that with more technical info. Does your neighbors tree need clean-up on the branches?
@@BinoH Yeah, it wasn't looking too good from what I could see. When a large pine tree has dead branches that hang downwards, is it okay to remove them?
@@stevebrough304 if your working on a tree and ot has dead wood try to remove as much as possible for safety reasons, just as an added favour to the customer at least I'd say.
I came to look at proper tree trimming and maintenance. I wanted my beloved 24 year old mesquite tree to be laced. I wasn’t home when the company started. They hacked of all the large branches and cut everything up to the tip top. The branches that are left have every branch cut off to the top with a small canopy. Now they look like mesquite “palms” My heart is broken. Wish tree companies were all knowledgeable like you
Sorry that happened to your trees. A Arborist could possibly restore your tree but it may take years. Looking for a tree company that has International Society of Arboriculture certification is a good way to find qualified trimmers. Take care!
@@BinoH it will take years but what’s done is done. I just wanted a branch trimmed off the house and for them to lace it. I planted the tree when it’s trunk was only as thick as my thumb. Now it’s two and a half stories tall. The tree has been well loved. Now it just looks hacked and abused. Omg I’m starting to bawl my eyes out again. Do the hacks not realize that people have a relationship with their trees, they are loved and cared for than to take a saw and hack off all of its branches. My ex is a landscape architect and we planted it together all those years ago. I’ve known what I’m doing with the tree all along. I apologize to it whenever I walk out my door or up to it. I fully believe trees are sentient beings that care for each other. It will never be the same. I’m REALLY heartbroken. Thank your for your reply, though. I appreciate it.
@@chellyr4972 It always amazes me how many companies claim to know how to trim trees and leave so many people in your situation. We have learned how to trim properly for decades but it still continues. Take care!

Would you prune a white weeping birch tree the same way? We only seem to get guys here who want to top them or shorten heavy branches ( 4” or more diam.) by just cutting them back halfway or so with a horizontal cut with no reference to other branches coming off them. They cut an upright birch that way and it started dying from the top down soon after.
Yes it's always better to trim to lateral branches and to try leaving the tree looking natural. Birch trees decay very easily and if you trim them by topping you will end up with weakly attached branches and lots of decay.

Great to hear! Take care!
This is proper pruning, per UC Master Gardeners. A lot of arborists don't seem to understand this. Good work, Bino!
