British Hot Dogs - In A JAR!

- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Hot Dogs in a Jar! I have never seen hog dogs in a jar so I had to try it. While in Scotland, the family went shopping in a grocery market. We saw the hot dogs in a jar and just had to buy it. On the hot dog container it reads "American Style". As an American I have never heard of or seen a hot dog in a jar before. How should I cook them? How will they taste? How will they cook? Should I garnish with ketchup or mustard or ketchup and mustard? Tune in to find out!
The video showcases Dinos Famous Hot Dogs and the Kamado Joe grill.

Sorry but we have some of the best bangers in the world from England... Facts, these are a German thing
You'll find German Bockwurst in jars in Aldi. Very similar.
In the States?
I think you mean Bratwurst lol, they are gross, like rubber.
@@robertomoi2044 Nope. BOCKWURST. I know my german sausages. These you can boil, fry, grill, BBQ or nuke. BRATWURST IN Aldi come in plastic packs. Those you can't boil. Prefer Bratwurst.
@@andyonions7864 I bet you know your German sausages. Lol
@@robertomoi2044
They do both.
Glass jars are better as there’s no wasteful plastic❤️
Both plastic and glass can be recycled.
I live in France and love their hot dogs - it's not the sausage but the bread (baguette - lovely crusty bread). They add mustard, of course, and some grated cheese with a drop of tomato sauce. Must admit I've never been to the States so can only compare UK with France.
You can get them in jars in any supermarket - or if you want the Dino's, in any Waitrose or Sainsbury .... and on Amazon or Ocado
Just discovered your videos. What a nice family you have. Happy new year from Ireland.
Happy New Year!
You are one of the chilliest guys ever mate, glad you are enjoying all the British stuff in your life. Sometimes takes a different perspective to remind people of what they have in their own back yard. Cheers
Just one thing though pal, in British it's a BBQ... Haha
The whole idea that we have totally different meanings for the word "grill" always gets me! LOL
The great thing about the jars, is you can just use a few then seal the rest back up 😁
Yes, and more resealable than the plastic packs too ;-)
Love how she washed her hands before tasting it.Good hygiene 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hi there no need to go to Scotland for hot dogs in a jar they sell them in Sainsburys Tescos and ASADA all in England, and they last for ages. Love your content keep it going.
Perfect for preppers. Good find mate.
BBQ anything is always the best.
Keep the videos comming legend!
"British food the American way" would be a great ongoing miniseries in between other content. 💕

@@TheBigChill1 Thats WHY it would be great! 😂. No joke though it would be interesting if nothing else. Interesting does not have to taste good hahah.
Love to see the delight on your face! You can buy these anywhere in the UK so no need to go back to Scotland.
They are processed crap. Use proper sausages from a butchers shop.
They're 100% offal.
@@cjp8155 you’ve obviously never had a good *quality* sausage made with pork shoulder and fat. I don’t think any sausage is 100% offal.
@@JulieWallis1963 I'm talking about the hot dog sausages you buy in tins, not proper sausages. They're made using pig's ears, hooves, and God knows what else.
The problem with our Butchers sausages (twice national award winning), is they have so little fat in them, they don't really BBQ well.
All sausages are processes, Chris.
You have Loch correct. Loch 'Lowmand', depending upon Scottish accent it will also be Lowmund or Lowmond.
So, from Scotland... Haste ye back!!
Hi so glad your settling down into uk life, just letting you know if theirs a Sainsburys supermarket near were you live , there's no need to travel to Scotland as they sell the same hot dogs there as you have shown . I'm thinking of getting a taste of America hot dogs now , regards Trev .
Thanks Trev 👍🏾
I live in the south of England and you can buy those hot dogs down here but funnily enough, they tend to be on the American food shelf with the twinkies and whatnot also, you seem like a lovely bloke and have got yourself a subscriber kind sir
You need to remember that American Hotdogs derived from Wienerwurst and Frankfurters. Both are frequently sold in jars in Germany/Austria. Excellent with German mustard which is slightly milder than English mustard.
Also, check in Aldi, they do them in jars and tins.
There is a hotdog made by Westlers that is very good. It used to be widely available on the shelves, but now they only seem to sell in large packs aimed at retail.
Last time I checked it was around £20 for 24 hotdogs on Amazon.
Classic American dog, roll, mustard. Nothing beter. I"m 68 and have lived all over the US. First I've ever seen a dog in a jar. I love the smaller dogs on a steamed roll with mustard, onion & meat sauce as well. Dogs in a jar, now I've seen everything
Two different things. These Franks are for preparing the British cart way of boiling them in brine and serving with boiled onions. proper warm germs.
Hi Mac. I know these as Frankfurters that's what my Mum called them in a jar or tinned. You would be better off with a great British local banger (Cumberland or Lincolnshire Sauasage).Love you put them on a quality M&S sub roll- enjoy
Dogs in a jar are the best kind better than tinned which was all we used to have here. Glad you enjoyed Scotland . Dunnottar is not far from me it's awesome at sunrise
When I buy hotdogs, I look on the ingredients list for ‘Mechanically Retrieved Meat’. If I see this, I do not buy them. However, the jarred ones are invariably better quality.
I rarely eat sausages which are not beef. Supermarkets only seem to have beefburgers, minced beef, beef this and beef that, but not beef sausages. So I order specially from my local butcher. To me, these make the best hot dogs. But they must be eaten with fried onions, and I mean well fried, semi-caramelised onions. And, of course, the obligatory bread roll, mustard, and possibly brown sauce. And they must be eaten not inside the home, but outside. The hot dogs must of course be hot, and they will be enjoyed more if there's a slight chill in the evening air. Question: if I use beef sausages, are they still hot dogs..?
Dont need to wait to go scotland.
All supermarkets sell hotdogs in jars
"WIKINGER " really nice they do medium and extra large ....in jars..
Grill or boil scrumptious we always add fried onions too
No need to boil though...
@@davidhoward2487 grill is fine by me.. or fried... theyre ok too cold in a salad chopped up..
Sometimes I boil them in the salted water. Nice in a bun with some ketchup.
For me It's not a hotdog without onions but if it keeps the family happy your on to a winner.
Hot Dogs in a glass jar ? Has to be better than hot dogs in plastic !
Dinos hot dogs with dinos crispy onions in a nice brioche bun excellent defintly grill the dogs too x
might be able to get similar anywhere here...seen some in Morrisons
Oh wow you have an Aga, that must have been a culture shock. I personally hate the bloody things but they do suit old cottages.
They look bun length too! I would have pre-boiled those suckers given the likely high salt per milligrams.
M&S do "Posh Dogs" they go well in them rolls. I must say them M&S rolls are so nice, try mashing up some hard boiled eggs, mix in some mayonnaise and some grated cheese then put in them rolls. Yummy !
Hot Dogs in a jar? Never heard of such a thing...
tesco sell hotdogs in jars they are called wikinger has a red white and blue label would love your feedback on how they compare to the ones from scotland
Hotdogs in a jar or tin are common..they are nice.u grilled them but we either microwave or boil in a saucepan..u r treating it like a top end product.its just a cupboard filler.we usually just have then with chips, noodles etc.not really in a bun.its not usually seen as that type of product...lol
Preserving food in jars has been going on in England for generations my mother and Grandparents were masters of it. Welcome to England.
I've only ever known hot dogs to come in a jar. I love em burnt, with lots of mustard and onion.
Skye is great to visit, but during the summer it's packed with tourists. To avoid biting midges and avoid the crowds go when it's a little colder later in the year.
I am. I love this brand. Can buy them in our local store. (down in Hampshire). They are amazing with onion and mustard. mmmm so good
All major UK supermarket chains stock a variety of brands of hotdogs in a jar, no need to go to Scotland. I just finished off a jar I bought in Asda, which was made in Germany, and although it did not specifically mention America, it was decked out in red white and blue colours.
OK, here's your explanation. This was poor marketing by that Scottish company. Basically, these are Frankfurters (correctly known as Frankfurter Würstchen)
Hessen in Germany since that is a protected name (like Champagne). You can buy them in plastic wrappings as well (both here and in Germany) but those would be cheaper versions and (especially in Germany) it is frowned upon when using plastic for these
Silence is always a good sign of good food being eaten
That does look good! Great video.
when was the last time u washed the bbq grill 1974 xD jk... good video man ive never eaten hotdogs from a BBQ, definitely something im gonna try
I’m sure the salty water or brine is just a way of preserving the food and we usually just chuck them in a pot and heat them up but grilling them looks more delicious 😋🌭
Glad you enjoyed my beautiful country and as a Glaswegian I know you’ll be made very welcome when you come here, It’s a fantastic city with loads to do and the people are great with a fantastic sense of humour 😂🏴
Also good to know we makes tasty hot dog 🌭😂

American verification on the taste test, I always wondered if they were anything like the genuine American hot dog and now thanks to you I know.Keep up the vids, love watching them
English stuff's all good and well but sometimes you just fancy a hot dog folks, and French's mustard is also tasty. Think I'll give this brand a go :-)
Dogs in a Jar is the norm over here in the UK 🇬🇧……Never thought about BBQ 🍗 them…..🤪
You haven't tried real a British hot dog until you eat them from a can! 'Ye old oak' brand is a classic.
Loch Lomand pronounced like it rhymes with lowland.
I love this I have never seen hotdogs in a jar either they look normal. I love this video.
The hotdogs from a jar are the best And those Dino's ones are friggin amazing especially when you fry them and serve them with a couple fried egged and some hp BBQ sauce best comfort food from my childhood.
No need to go to Scotland for your Frank's Amazon sell them online.
Or you can get Wikinger hot dogs from your local Asda's.
Go to Aldi and get their giant bockwurst in a jar and some part baked baguettes to put them in.
Oh god damnit aldi what have you stopped making them??
They've anglicised Aldi, it's lost its German roots
You got a beautiful family!
Dino's is pronounced Deeno's by the way
I have no problem with those hot dogs - but only as a convenient, quick snack. Easy to keep in the cupboard and no need to refrigerate. Just heat them up in water and you’ve got a meal in minutes . If you’re going to maKe the effort for BBQ, get some decent sausages. Look more like German frankfurters.
you can buy them in tesco supermarket
Thanks
You ain’t lived unless you’ve tried Cornish Hogs Pudding! 👍
If you do add some chili, make sure it is chili with one L not two! hahaha... American joke ;-)
These jars of "Dino's Famous Brooklyn Big Dogs" are available in Tesco for £5 Dara... You'll have to give them a try when you fly over shortly... You can also try the Bunlimited Classic Hot Dogs from Morrisons for £2.49 for a pack of four... These are in the same style of packaging as the typical American Hot Dog Sausages are. 👌
@@rickb3645 Bunlimited is a great name! 👍
We always keep a jar of hot dogs in the cupboard , they are excellent in taste and value.
you forgot that british bread is PROPER bread, which also makes a difference, none of this added sweetness in the buns PLUS you can always reuse the jar to hold other things, no Plastic Waste. you can get some in normal super markets Wikinger Hot Dogs they are nice, but i prefer the YE old Oake ones
The Best thing to do with those Hotdogs is to boil them then chop them up and lay them on a bed of Chips (French Fries) then drizzle Mayonnaise one way across the whole plate then tomato sauce across the other direction , then mustard across the other way again & Voila ...... You have Salchipapas (our version ) ..Yum ! Yum ! Yum !

The worst place I ever had a Hot-Dog was in the States, in Vegas (Fremont Street) of all places.
I was so looking forward to having a genuine American Hot Dog in Vegas.
M&S rolls? You’ve really taken to British life. You video the weirdest things. It’s different. Keep it up!
They do better deals in Aldi ;)
The amount of things I learn from this channel that I thought were a common thing but learned it's mainly a British thing is crazy. I remember telling an American I was knackered once. He was baffled. Also, they don't do beans on toast over there. I love things like that.
Beans on toast?
@@KekeIdoLoveMe Thick cut bread, toasted, spread REAL butter on it and baked beans with a fried egg on top. Delicious!
It offends me to my core that the world has yet to learn about beans on toast.
Or cheesy beans on toast.
Or jacket potatoes with cheesy beans.
@@HaggisMuncher-69-420 Or beans and bacon. Curry beans (Pataks madras curry paste , a desert spoon stirred into the beans) and chips.
I might be wrong but I don’t think baked beans in a can, like Heinz, are a common thing in the USA. The beans they get in a can would be dreadful on toast, so when you say beans on toast to an American they have a totally different image in their head to our reality.
Now try some British sausages (Cumberland/Lincolnshire etc) with some English Mustard instead of American mustard (which is actually 10% German mustard mixed with mayonnaise and therefore is more of a mustard "flavoured" condiment).....and use the English stuff with respectful caution lol
English mustard is just 😋 😋 😋 I find the American one too vinegary, although it is nice for certain things.
"Respectful caution"... Yes, English mustard is like a Rhinectomy.
American mustard does not have mayonnaise mixed with it. I don't know where you heard that but it is incorrect.
No, no, American mustard does _NOT_ have mayonnaise in it, and it doesn't have any German mustard in it either. At least, French's mustard doesn't. If you compare the ingredient lists of French's vesus Colman's mustard you will find that French's uses mustard seed, whereas Colman's uses mustard flour. Colman's extra pungency is probably because of the variety of mustard that they use.
Respectful Caution? No, don't listen to him! Take a big spoonful, and watch yourself and your family turn into puff, the magic dragon 🤣🤣🤣
These are originally German sausages adopted by Americans of which the Germans put them in jars please try English mustard no need for chilli 😋
He means chili con carne, not chili peppers. It's common in USA to have a chili dog, often with melted cheese on top. Can't beat spicy English mustard though ☺
you will be blown away by Skye, make sure you drive up through Glen Coe, that area is stunning, ps love the way you did the hotdogs
Not sure why there's a lot of people in the comments going on about proper sausages. That's not what this videos for! I'm sure they eat them too/have already tried them. There's nothing wrong with a hotdog especially not if it's a home comfort! I personally love hotdogs AND cumberland/lincolnshire sausages :)
@Ian Warren Actually, the "American style hotdog", as you refer to it originates from Germany/Austria, so you clearly don't know what you're talking about. The clue is in the name(s) - 'Frankfurter/Wiener'.
@@Nutrient-Gold
He's just not seen hotdogs in a jar before. Don't think he is trying to give a history lesson on hotdogs.
Tinned franks are rough. German Brats are really good. But, Cumberland, Lincolnshire or any pork and apple sausage are the nuts. If you’re caught in a pinch, Richmond’s are a good standby
I don't consider them quite the same. I would have sausages in a sandwich bread and hotdogs in a bun for example.
Well said my man keep the vids coming love from Scotland ❤️
Personally I'd prefer a proper pork sausage than these hot dogs any day of the week
I like both.. everything has a season .. !!!

In “Lomond”, the emphasis is on the FIRST syllable so that it is elongated to sound like the word “low”. Think of the name “Raymond”.
Very sweet and polite kids you have, lovely! I'd like to see you try to cook a few traditional British foods at home (it's cheaper, and better - often - than eating out) such as shepherd's pie, cullen skink, kedgeree, prawn cocktail, beef wellington, roast lunch, beef stew and dumplings, lancashire hotpot etc (and maybe some desserts!)
And steak and kidney pee (as in Goodness Gracious Me)
I see you had M&S rolls for your hotdogs, next time you go to M&S, go to the sausage section and you will find something called "Posh Dogs" and the smaller "Posh Puppies"
These are raw totally uncooked "Hot Dog" style sausage and will give you a completely new experience of how hot dogs can be prepared. They look a little different from your "run of the mill" hotdogs but are nevertheless the beautiful smoked taste associated with the product
2nd that, M&S Posh Dogs are superb, especially when they're on the 3 for £10 deals in the summer :)
Be sure to get the Brioche style hot dog buns, use Reggae Reggae sauce instead of mustard and some fried onions. Once you've tasted a Hot Dog with Reggae Reggae sauce you'll wonder how you lived without it.
Pick up a jar of Colman's English Mustard as well, that goes well on a hotdog. If you're in Scotland you might find it in the foreign foods section of the supermarket 🤣
Caution if you haven't had english mustard before it's quite a bit hotter than american yellow mustard, would recommend tasting it before adding it to anything.
Coleman English mustard is the best in the world and it's got a kick

I'd never have thought to grill them like you did here. We normally empty the jar (or can as you can also buy canned hotdogs) into a saucepan, water and all, and gently heat slowly. Which to be honest, i've never been a fan of as I don't like soggy wet bread! Might buy some of these for 1st time in ages next time I go shopping and grill them instead!
What you've done there will be great for Guy Fawkes night (bonfire night) on the 5th Nov. Eating hot dogs and watching the firework display, is my favourite autumn thing.
Brooklyn hotdogs are also boiled in their brine. I think this is because the quintessential New York hotdog is mostly sold by street vendors who can easily boil hot dogs with battery power, but can’t walk around with a grill for obvious reasons.
I really miss the Primrose hotdogs in a can. I’ve tried to get them in the US but can’t find them anywhere. We used to have them on Guy Fawkes night with fried onions. Good memories…

You can buy jars of hot dogs in any supermarket in England. They're already cooked. You only need to empty the hot dogs and the liquid from the jar into a pan, and heat gently on the stove. Do not boil.
Yeah but make sure they don’t say mechanically recovered meat or mechanically reconstituted meat because I used to work on the machines and I will never eat hot dogs made with meat from that method because trust me you wouldn’t look at another sausage with the same fondness and hunger again it stinks and they use virtually every part of the pig even bone is steamed for hours and hours and ground into the meat paste and that includes the head. When you eat those cheap hot dogs and you get like that gritty hard stuff in the meat well that’s the bone. It’s awful and it should be banned.

HOT DOGS IN A JAR have been available in supermarkets for as long as i can remember. My neighbour was addicted to them and that is all she would eat.

I love Dino's Dogs, you can get them from Sainsbury's and Tesco :) There are a lot of poor quality hot dogs out there, so always check what meat is in it and the meat content, you want 70% pork or better for a good one. Some of the really cheap ones will just be mechanically reclaimed chicken and taste awful!
Ocado is cheaper. :)
What I love about this video is seeing a young man with impeccable manners, even though his dad was pushing him for a verdict on the hot dogs, he would not speak or even open his mouth with food in it! When such a young man has that decency on his mind, he has been raised right and will be a gentleman when he grows up. Love this family, very articulate and likeable. And enjoyable content. A+
