One of the guys early in the video was talking about hydraulic efficiency. He said the best you can get is about 60% efficient with a hydraulic system. That may be true with low-end hydraulic components. But if you step up to high-end stuff like bent axial piston motors and pumps, (for example) you can get 90+ percent efficiency out of a system. However, those components are very expensive. So it's not that it CAN'T be done with a hydraulic system.... they're just trying to save some money. In this application there is nothing wrong with a PTO shaft so they made the right choice. Those look like great machines! Thanks for the video, Stan.
The problem with PTO driven machines is the repair costs when gear boxes and shafts start to go bad. Hydro has built in relief to prevent damage. Between that and the harder/longer attachment time- I’d rather have hydro
@@mikesmith-ek1il It's possible that a gear box could cost more than a standard hydraulic gear pump, or gear motor..... but probably not with the 90+ efficient stuff that I'm talking about. Depending on specific specs and brand, a bent axis piston drive motor... JUST a drive motor alone can cost anywhere between $3000 - $7000 and the bent axial piston pump on the other end of the circuit will cost just as much, and probably more. Sure, a large manufacturer is not going to pay full retail when they order thousand of these components but a machine with a high efficiency hydraulic system can easily price the machine right out of the market. Just my $0.02...

I loved the video and the machines. I was snow plow driver for the State in Illinois for 20 years. We used brine injected into the auger carrying the salt. We also had a spray trailer with 1000 gallons of brine that we would spray bridges with twice a week. We made or own brine and I was never really a big fan of it I usually would turn it off and run just salt never noticed a difference. Plus if your in a really cold place once it gets around 25 degrees the salt stops working. Anyway if you run those machines like you guys did be prepared for something to break or with salt something to corrode very quickly. Salt will find it's way into places you will never know until it's too late. And if you use salt on a parking lot your driving through all that melting salt every snow storm. Great video though very impressive product.
If I was building one of those machines, I would probably do the snow blower kit with the cab, I think I would find the most use out of that. WOW! for a second there i thought you were in northern minnesota at our airbase! finland minnesota has one of these radar towns AND ITS FOR SALE! $850k if you want your own testing grounds or a bug out VILLAGE! awesome video! do they have an attachment for the mammoth that would allow it to be used all year around? mower deck or a brush hog? the broom would be cool but would like to see it used all year around! thanks again bud!
I bought one of these for my home in the Sierra Nevada that should be here next week. I have 3300 sq ft of paver driveway that can use it. How well does this thing operate on smaller hills? Does it slide or can chains be purchased for it? I grabbed the 48 blower, brine system, and brush.
That stuff would be great for a large Condominium Community but other than that maybe a mini mall type thing where there's a ton of small drives and walkways that you can't get with larger equipment. You could use the broom all year but what else can you do with it?
You certainly could mix your own if you know how much salt to put in the water. I'm pretty sure that's all it is but there are some places that you might be able to Google to buy pre-made but it's like buying gasoline.
I mixed my own last year for our Snowrator in 7 gallon buckets. I think we used 1.5-2 gallons of salt to 4-5 gallons of water. I used a 5 gallon drill powered paint stirrer and strained the dirt fines with a fabric 5 gl bucket paint strainer before dumping it in the tank. I believe there is supposed to be some type of saturation limit to how salty you can get the brine.
I live in N.Wisconsin and would love one of these with all the attachments could def. make some money... Wishful thinking! have to stick with atv and Ariens 24" is a kick ass blower and atv works well this would be a awesome upgrade with the brine and salter
Stan way to much snow for me up there nice machine nice to see the cab don’t know if they had heat like the boss like I said with boss should have brush mower to make more sale able to areas that don’t get as much snow even a dump that attachment for the front hope your getting some rest from plowing we haven’t had a event yet here in Philly
They have heat from the engine directed at the hand controls at the top of the dash and your knee level or half way down the leg area then at the bottom that would hit your feet. Really good design for the thought that went into it. I know I wouldn't want my joints getting cold and I feel like that engine heat would do the trick with the wind screen from the blower attachment.
That is an impressive unit, (that's what she said) the brine and salt system is a must. Myself the blade and blower makes the most sense. push a pile and then blow it back.
Nice machines. Have a couple of their professional snowblowers and no real problems except their aluminum lever for the auger break wears out quick. Running a multiforce, 4wd would be nice. But what was the temps? Guys running well below zero were reporting running issues which also experienced with multiforce. Top of engine needs protection from elements, especially air inlet when using snowblowers or dealing with ND winds. Cold weather kits exist for a reason and toro and ariens ignored them.
Hat's off to you Stan for going far and beyond to provide, produce very informative information about equipment, instead of just getting content.

I bought one of these for my home in the Sierra Nevada that should be here next week. I have 3300 sq ft of paver driveway that can use it. How well does this thing operate on smaller hills? Does it slide or can chains be purchased for it? I grabbed the 48 blower, brine system, and brush.
Heavy foam fill the tires and stud them up. IMO. With our Snowrator I’d only be worried about ice. It’s got good traction.
Stan, is the blower pretty much the same as your gravely walk behind blower.
Would you be able to get your hands on a Ventrac SSV to do a similar video?
That stuff would be great for a large Condominium Community but other than that maybe a mini mall type thing where there's a ton of small drives and walkways that you can't get with larger equipment. You could use the broom all year but what else can you do with it?
Stan, great video!
What's the brine solution that's used, and can a person mix their own?
I can't imagine living with that much snow. I live in Washington so all we get is rain and maybe 2 inches of snow a year.
Lots of family near there. Mega snow.
I like them , would build it with a v plow , broom attachment , add on the pump/ hose kit . Since we don’t get that much snow where I live.
I'm a truck driver and been in some doosie snowstorms out west but by far the worst I've ever driven in was going through the U.P. lol
That is an impressive unit, (that's what she said) the brine and salt system is a must. Myself the blade and blower makes the most sense. push a pile and then blow it back.
Does the mammoth only have winter attachments
Nice machines. Have a couple of their professional snowblowers and no real problems except their aluminum lever for the auger break wears out quick. Running a multiforce, 4wd would be nice. But what was the temps? Guys running well below zero were reporting running issues which also experienced with multiforce. Top of engine needs protection from elements, especially air inlet when using snowblowers or dealing with ND winds. Cold weather kits exist for a reason and toro and ariens ignored them.
They look like fun to have.If it was me I would get the blower, plow, and the brine/salter.
Greetings to snow world
Blower
Impressive
Does the blade have down pressure or does it " float"?
I think we need to gently call Stan out with a whisper for this one.
Can the salter drop sand also?
