John: "Hello?"
The phone: "The 90's are calling. They want their blinds back."

*Fantastic Idea Great Work* 👍👌👏🌟😎
You should automate them. That would bring them back up to date!
plantation shutters are very popular window shade in Arizona, especially in high end homes.
Nothing like the blinds we had in the 90's, far superior. (Britain)
Bit of brass and we'll make it back to the 80s. The nice thing about these is that they look fantastic and won't rattle around. The wood is great.
Overly complicated, far to expensive and labor intensive, unnessesarily many moving parts. I love it.
Agreed!!! And lacking the function of moving the slats out of the way. STILL LOVE THIS PROJECT!!!!! I will be doing this.
Compared to normal vertical blinds? Not really, only labor intensive, might even be cheaper.
Thank you, Zunder. The video made my day, and then your comment did again.
Chris Melvin I think you may have missed the point of Zunder’s comment.
Plus: you can automate this with an Arduino!
I was just sitting here saying, "Wooooowww.." the whole time. Absolutely beautiful work.
Your ability to free hand perfectly straight lines is outstanding.
If you're talking about those lines he made on the connecting rods, he was actually just following a groove he made with a special tool. You can see him making the groove at 5:09
@@PandaMane nice observation
He scribes it first Mate
Fantastic, John! Love the mechanical function and you definitely made the right choice in spending the extra time to add all the curves. Looks great!
Holly crap! So much work, so many steps & so much that can go wrong. But you pulled it off beautifully. They look amazing.
I never get tired of how John makes what looks like cnc parts by hand instead.
Amazing work John. Watching the parts showing up on Instagram this week I was very much anticipating today’s video, very awesome!! Watching you work is just so satisfying and inspirational! Keep it going, you are definitely one of the best!
Not only a brilliant idea, a beautiful result and a smile on my face, thanks for that!
Did you know..... If it wasn't for the guy who invented blinds it would be curtains for all of us! :)
Not necessarily, shutter up!
@@ironpirate8 Way to throw some SHADE, Iron Pirate.
"Curtains for all of us"? Pull yourself together mate.
These are bad gags. No matter how you window dress it.
It's a design any woodworker could louvre!
The decorator, "interior designer" ladies call that a window treatment. It is definitely a very masculine window treatment. Meticulously done John.
Nawh, a REAL MAN's "window treatment" would have this made out of 1/2" diamond plate steel... AR500 would be even better...
@@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire That would be a Andrew Camarata window treatment.
Well I must have masculine tastes then because I’m a woman and I think they’re stunning!
And this is one lady that loves it. They look kid and cat resistant. Nothing is kid proof.
I've been watching your videos for many years now, and I have to honestly say that your skill and creativity has never ceased to AMAZE me, John! Thanks for making such great content!!!
Best Job ever ... Thank you for sharing and teaching.
I can see the day when John finally goes to sell his house:
Buyer taking a tour: "It's all wood.... The doorknob, the light fixtures, the curtains.... The coffee pot is wood.... Who makes a coffee pot out of WOOD?!"
Frightened children can be seen in the background clutching each other and weeping uncontrollably. Somewhere outside there is a fire.
*coated in plastic u forgot ;)
@@PALbub Right.. Why not oil?
Wood gives flavor to the bland🤣😂🤣 try oak or mahogany🤣😂
Geno Merci, you sir are a funny guy, I couldn't stop laughing. !!
Amazing end result and very informative / instructional video John!
Thanks :)
I love when makers go above and beyond standard making and come up with clever designs, especially in the mechanical workings. Excellent work John! Thanks for sharing!
Honestly how does your mind work? I am an engineer and the designs you come up with are so out of the box but functional. Bravo
You are Soooooo freaking brilliant!
Everything you do looks so simple, so elegant yet so smart.
You always seem to find the easiest solution for every task.
I'm learning so much watching your videos. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.
I loved this one!
I am in South Africa and on behalf of all South Africans I declare your work phenomenal
As a fellow South African, I totally agree.
Oh muy goodness John I fell in love with those blinds. Good bless your talents.
I was wondering where the Construction Adhesive was going to come in... you never disappoint. It's not a John Heisz build without it!
Completely impressed from concept through construction. Well done.
John I have watched your channels for years and never made a comment. This has been the most satisfying project I have watched from you. I know you have made a lot more complex stuff but for some reason this really hit the mark. Thanks.
You're like the God of over complicated DIY project! I love it!
You have incredible patience! Those look grand.
Thanks Brendan :)
...and skill.
Masood Shaikh yes John is amazing, The entire time I watched I’m thinking some smartass will make a comment about ...so much faster with a CNC...haven’t read all the comments yet so it may pop up yet
Oh, I really enjoyed this video.. Genius John, I love how this came out!!
Master craftsmanship and the patients of Jobe. Good combination!
Hell yeah. Blinds fit for a King. Nothing but the best. I'm making me some of these. Thanks.
Blinds Master ! 😀 Like always , excellent video. I especially like your workflow and all the little and easy jigs that you use for the repetitive tasks. Well done.👍
That hurt my head. Interesting design, B-E_A_U_T_I_F_U_L CRAFTSMANSHIP, great presentation and once again, more a piece of art than woodworking -- you won't make much on the plans for those but my goodness they turned out GREAT. Thanks John I really enjoyed this.
You are like the Bob Ross of wood working, 👍
So much patience. Beautiful
Just incredible! Those are so cool John.
Thanks Bill :)
You never cease to amaze me John - cracking project and perfectly executed.
Brilliant idea.
Nicely done.
You're insane man! (in a good way) Do you design in your head or on paper/computer? Fantastic, thank you !
I’m just blinded by your brilliance again!
This comment deserves more love 👍
Is there anything you can not do, John?
Wow happy Father's Day cuz that was a dad joke if I ever saw one...
Beyond seeing Johns brilliance and others, I praise & worship the great God who created ALL HUMANITY!! Thank God for Christ our salvation!
That is a thing of beauty sir love the workmanship and the fact that u added extra details that weren't over complicated but occupied ur time well
What a brilliant piece of design, I really appreciate the thought behind this, as well as the methods involved in production!
That much resawing and milling alone, you crazy, mad genius, how do you stay sane. Love the exposed mechanical
That's just it: I stopped being sane some time ago, so I'm cleared for stuff like this :)
@@JohnHeisz Haha, definitely. I was just being courteous. We all know the truth. ;)
Insane? Isn't that being sane with insight? 👍😁
@@JohnHeisz Did you have much of an issue with warping? Did you leave the wood to rest at all between milling ops? Beautiful project once again John!
Exposed mechanical is far too clunky and ugly . They work but my guess is not many would want them.
John Heisz: the original "Hold my beer" guy.
Wow. Just wow. So much work. Nicely done.
Beautiful work, John! It's a joy to watch you work.
Yeah, it's true there is a lot of work into making these, but when you have that kind of skill level it's just something fun to do and they look amazing.
very well made, looks awesome! I'd maybe add a handle to it, so you wouldn't have to reach up or twist the slats
Don't have to reach up turn end slat .
I was thinking about that too. I can't decide if a turn crank with gears and rope or a linear actuator and remote would be cooler. Either way it would unnecessarily complicate a unnecessarily complicated build so it would be awesome.
well done John, that was brilliant!
Ingenious John. !!! Simply put.
Yeah, nothing like making more work for yourself.... turned out great, John!
Thanks Art. Came this close to making these from walnut :)
@@JohnHeisz That actually would have looked really nice with the wall behind your TV. Not sure how badly they would fade in the sun though, so clear ash is probably a better long term choice?
Actually, starting to not like the wood wall anymore, so that might be reallocated to another purpose. Small room and that makes it look even smaller and dark.
10:34
"For pins I'm using 2 inch finish nails I clipped to the right length with my pliers... and the good thing about that is that allows the slats to come off fairly quickly if I need to take them off for some reason."
I don't know why but the video ending after that sentence made me laugh so hard.
Good video 10/10
Can’t get enough of your ingeniously designed vertical blinds. So sharp. I’m a repeater on this vid, for sure. I love watching the precision of your design execution.
Stunning! Great work.
Those are some skookum blinds! My wife has been bothering me to get some blinds for the windows in the front room, and since I'm still cooped up inside, I may as well take inspiration from this and make my own.
I'm thinking I'll make the slats wider (I have nice deep window frames to work with) so there are fewer of them, and I'll make the slats thinner, maybe 3/16 instead of 3/8 so they don't block the view quite as much in the open position. I've got some nice straight maple in 1/4 thickness so I should be able to use that for the slats themselves by running it through the planer. I'll have to see how thin I can get them without warping.
A pulley with a cord on it could aid in opening the blinds, too. I noticed with your design, you kind of have to be tall enough to reach the linkage, so I'll need to create a system that allows you to manipulate the linkage with a loop of cord and some pulleys.
Thanks for the inspiration!
A pulley or a gear system would be awesome to look at.
Try and make the overlapping parts of the blinds in a grove, so that they still nice and snug and block all light when in use.
Very thin blinds would be just great - it'll enhance the view when left open. Best of luck mate.
Sam L taking hold of an end slat and turning it would open/close then due to the linkage...good luck with your build
Organist: "That's a gigantic swell box, how many stops can we build into it?"
John: "Sorry mate, it's my home!"
Brilliant build, John. Thank you very much for posting that up.
I am really surprised where this patience comes from. You are amazing . Your work is perfect
These are the vertical blinds that Da Vinci would have had hanging in his house.
I'm shocked his sprayer wasn't made of plywood, like everything else he used.
He'll probably make a video of him replacing parts on it with wood
John, I really like those. This just might be the best project I've seen you do. Thanks for sharing.
John, you always amaze me by your details in the work you do! Great job!
Guest: I love these blinds. How much did you pay for them?
John: bout a built fifty...
We spend all this time with you and you give us 5 seconds to see the end result. I’m frustrated
I bet he has finished pictures on his website in the build article ;)
Yeah, what a tease!
The journey is the worthier part, so they say.
Looks amazing! The creativity is the best way to resolve anything
Hi John, it never ceases to amaze me the way your mind works, for 99% of us given that problem we would just go and buy something that is mass made and lakes any no originality. While we are out there, being ripped off and losing the little money we have, you looked at the problem and came up with this solution. An excellent video as always and a pleasure to watch a master at work.
Love these, fascinating to watch them work. Love the images of them installed at the end.
These look absolutely amazing!
Gorgeous work!
Amazing work. Hats off to you.
Well done, I love the styling and entire mechanism.
Wow I love this, what a neat look and it’s all natural wood
Amazing project,
Congrats.

I've been in window coverings for 35 years and I have to hand it to you, you nailed it.
one of the most beautiful work that i ever seen.
Wow! This is really incredible!
Wow. What craftsmanship. Look great.
That’s neat John.
Brilliant craftsmanship.
So good.

Excellent job God bless you and your hands
That was beautiful and ingenious. I love the way you explained everything. Really great job.
Amazing craftsmanship!
Man.... the patience you have!! Hats off!
Nice work John! Thanks for the idea and the video.
There's a lot of woodworking videos out there. I really like the way you explain and show your work.
Amazing work and concept just perfect John...Thanks Rusty

Amazing work John!
Excellent idea and marvelous execution.
Beautiful.... impressive work
I love this build. Thank you. Great idea. Great work.
Simply amazing!!!
You are a true wood worker amazing work
Another great video! Whether I build something like this or not, always fun to watch you work and listen to your commentary.
wow , seriously an amazing work
Great project and well done.
