Hi John, do you have a cost estimate for the store bought slides, vs the timber, fixings, and varnish for your home made version..? Of course we can't factor in our time as that will vary from person to person and tooling available.. Here in Australia, full extension slides like these are quite expensive, especially if you need heavy duty ones.. Many years ago I made a power tool drawer for under my work bench, and the 40kg slides I got were about 45 bucks a pair.. To be fair, they've been reliable and trouble free in the 11 years since, so I'm also wondering how timber ones would hold up over time. Great content, and thanks for sharing 👍
@@GenoLoma don't bother asking John anything, he's a moron. I asked what should be a fairly simple question of him, but instead of answering or saying he doesn't know, he goes into some pity party, but still asks for people to support him and buy plans (which I've done).

I work for a millwork company. My department makes custom doors. I built a new 4'x8' ft table today for my department, minus the 4ft wide drawer I want under the tabletop. I am 100% going to utilize this design, using 1x4 mahogany scrap that we've accumulated the past 2 years. You sir are a life saver!
John, I consider you to have the best mechanical minded person on you tube. My passion is lathe work, I have made most of the jigs that I use in my hobby. I definitely will be using this application to put new drawers under my new work bench that i built.
Watched this video last year when it first posted, finally got around to making my own set this last week. They work amazing! Thank you for sharing your creativity and talent with the rest of us!
John, thank you for showing all of us how to make what we want/need instead of having to buy it. I enjoy seeing all the items you have made being put to use on additional projects and how sturdy they are.
Building this, cutting the slots right now, this is why I got into woodworking during pandemic, this kind of diy stuff, and for sure your channel inspired me I could build tools and do it myself, I didn't need to buy very much, it's everything I'm about!
Finally used these drawer slides. Excellent! I had to try designing my own to appreciate how clever this design is. Looks simple and is simple and that is genius. Thank you, John!
John - Great video, very informative, helpful, detailed etc. Thanks for sharing and including the plans. Honestly - I was wish I had a .10 of your abilities, creativity, thoughts, drive etc. Some of your work is truly mind blowing - even with something like this. Nothing major. Nothing huge, Nothing so complex that an engineer needed to work on. Simple enough for just about anyone to take on, BUT it took someone like yourself with your thoughts and abilities to make it happen. Thank you!
Great product John, the "cheap" me has wondered about wooden slides like this, thanks for doing the leg work and designing, this is why i like you and Mathias, wood first! Cheers and thanks!
I been wanting to convert some old drawers I have to full extension, I need 20 slides. They cost $20-25 a piece. Then in have an extra 6 drawers that i need to build from scratch. Thats over $650...just for slides.Right now I have a ton of pine left over from projects. Will definitely be using your method to make my slides. Glad I came across your vid, thank you for sharing!
I made some of these with a minor variation. Instead of gluing the hardwood runners directly to the drawers and cabinets sides, i gluedthe hardwood runners to a piece of luan. Four per drawer. I did that so I could adjust them to fit, rather than calculated as my work is ahem, not as precise as Johns. They attach with eight countersunk screws each going through the luan. Rubbed some candle wax on the contact surfaces and the drawers slide like glass! Thanks John!
This is the most usefull tuto I've seen in my life, those drawer slides are so expensive for the moment with the supply chain issue. I need 20 of these for a project, thanks a lot from Belgium !!!
I had made a set of narrow drawers and improvised a slide which didnt work well. I found this and it was perfect. I was able to make my slides on the cnc using a template to hold 8 at a time and double sided. Perfect what a brilliant solution!
John thank you for this amazing video and contributions to woodworking. Currently I am building a cart to go under the right of my table saw. The cart is going to end up with 5 drawers. I am looking at $105 for the 100lb full extension slides. My next build will be similar to your Large Toolbox build. In fact, I am toying with abandoning my current plan and just build two of your Large Toolbox builds. With a small shop, you want everything to be mobile. When I first started out, I caught some of your videos. At the time, they were way over my head. Now that I am on my third reorganization of my shop 6 years in, I really get your builds. Especially your drawer slides. Those drawer slides will save me great deal of money, and will go a long way in helping my understanding of mounting drawers.
John you must have been a Tool & Die maker as I was for over forty years when I saw you pull out your calipers and measure, this is the way I measure also. Took a woodworking class for over twenty years at local community college they all laughed at me for measuring this close. Great tips on slides love your gear movement on vise, I think I would need a dividing head and Bridgeport to make this one. Your teaching skills are excellent keep doing what you love !
Your an inspiration John! This is super awesome stuff. I always wondered if something like this was able to be done and executed well enough to be functional and well.. you've done it. Thanks for being you!
Great project John. By far the simplest wood version of full extension slides I have seen. Thank you. It would be fun to see a quick video where you check the weight capacity of these.
Thanks for being so inventive and sharing this. I've seen other takes on wooden full extension drawer slides, but none so simple and effective as these. As with all things that end up reduced to relative simplicity, I'll bet this took some thinking about!
That is fantastic, now you can build the cabinet to fit the location instead of the hardware. Thank you John. Now for your next build... Making these Soft-closing!
Don’t miss any of your videos. Love that you like making everything by hand, shows your always wanting to learn and experiment. Great video, keep them coming!!!!
Really really good build! I have been cogitating on wooden drawer slides for a project for a little while. I can stop cogitating and go to work. Thank you for sharing this build!
Great video John. Thanks for sharing it. I would also like to give you recognition for your videography. You do a great job at that too! I dabble at both and can appreciate the effort taken here. Thank you again.
Thank you very much for the wonderful art lessons and touches you offer, and many congratulations for obtaining a master's degree. Your follower and love Ali from Saudi Arabia
That's impressive!! I'm in the process of building new cabinets for the shop and these are now going to be part of the build. Thanks for sharing your ingenuity!!
Brilliant! I was looking for a locking slide for an application I was wanting to try, but couldn't find something that would work the way I want. This will allow me to make my own slide and add a lock at different locations.
These are really cool! Will be buying plans! (Probably not for the slides, but for the combination belt/disc sander of yore) Thanks for the great videos!
Sweet. Am building a sanding station for my oscillating sander and small belt/disc sander, and the room left for a small drawer to hold the misc. drums, discs, etc. is too short in depth to use metal ones, as the big box store’s shortest ones are 14” long. Will build yours. Did like the comment about eliminating the screw threads-to-slide contact, in order to minimize wear.
Great design John! I don't believe that I have ever seen wooden draw slides before. Definitely a lot cheaper than buying them! Thanks................... 👍👍😉😉
This is awesome! For some reason here in Portugal the metal full extensions I used to buy in USA for less than 10 bucks are over $30 here! Plus, these things solars gum up eventually. I like the idea of waxed sliding wood instead of the bearings
Gonna have to try making these slides when I have time. Tip for sanding the slots: use sandpaper on a dowel. Even better....take a rubber tube and cut a slit along the whole length, so you can wrap the sandpaper around and tuck it in.
Great idea (and a good way to use scraps instead of buying drawer slides for shop furniture!! One theoretical question: how much weight could a pair of these support? A test of that hat would be a cool video to watch (hint hint)!

I sanded everything and put poly on it but I also took some car wax and waxed the inside rails and it makes it pretty smooth.
