55 SERIES TOYOTA vs JACKEROO - Roothy
He's got the Jack! Glen Wright was Editor of 43WD Action back when we decided to do another round of Bushmechanic Challenges. And being Editor, he knew he was going to win even before we started. Actually, given Glen was a rally mechanic and driver well before starting this gig he has the skills to do it!
I couldn't believe I got that 55 Series for $1800, but then my beard wasn't grey so it's a few years ago. The celebrated 'Iron Pig' was Toyota's first ever go at building a station wagon for family off-roading and with leaf springs both ends and 40 series running gear they wewre as tough as the commercial Toyotas.
Wish I'd know how rare they were going to get because I would have kept this one after the challenge. Back then nobody wanted them because they were really prone to rusting out roofs and floors.
Meanwhile Glen bought a Holden Jackeroo, which was known as the Isuzu Trooper in most markets outside Australia. Isuzu have never made a really bad truck and as such these old girls are tougher than they look and very capable. Glen got his 1991 independent shorty for $700 - and once again, wish we'd kept it!
Yes, it was filmed somewhere oput of Newcastle, up around the Barringtons and on Stockton Beach - back in the days when it was easy to get offroad so close to town.

When 4wd prices where not stupid and people sold it for the right prices
Supply and demand. Its how the world goes around my friend.
Those old Jacks are things of beauty I have the Isuzu bighorn and I love them
One of my favourite old episodes Roothy. Can't wait for the Watagans Episode with my brothers Simon and Sean.
Im always pleased when I see a challenge like this and there a jackaroo involved. They bag them at the start but love them at the end. One of the most underrated 4wd's on the market the good old jackaroo. I miss my 89 series jack so much.
From the usa we never got the jackaroo. It looks like a truck we have - isuzu trooper. If it is the same they are actually bad ass little trucks. I know chevy and isuzu have been partners for a long time.
@@MrThorgrimm yes the trooper is the same as the Australian jackaroo. They were rebadged through a few different companies.
Which ever company badge they have They always were and always will be one of the best under rated 4wd on the market
such a legend roothy!! Funny the same thing still applies today !! open the Bonnet and all you see is massive plastic engine shroud
remember watching this on DVD years back
Glad to see Roothy put in his place, The Jackaroo was better then a over priced, over rated Toyota, great to see
Why is it over rated? Its not a 79 ahahahah
10:00 the shit coming out the back of that 55 when he took off holy hell 🤣
I reckon you got that landcruiser for a good deal Roothy wouldn’t find one for that price these days
Would be hard to even find one in general now
That was mates rates even back then. My old boys 55 cost him 10k in '91. Over priced & over rated.
I remember driving out of the dealership with a brand new ol55
Yes I am old ...
They were the cause of many a legend and rightly so ...
The jackaroo were renowned for being a bit frail but this old girl did glenno proud
Great comparison
Both vehicles stood up well !
I keep coming back to this one just for the sound track.
What an awesome challenge guys!!! Love It
really enjoyed that one !! thanks again!!
The jackaroo is a very underrated 4wd. My first offroader. Excellent rear lsd.
Isuzu make good trucks and this was one of them...one of the best business decisions holden even made....along with the Isuzu motor that was in the Holden Gemini that straya loves so much!!! Also the holden rodeo had an Isuzu motor as well. The Colorado where also rebadged Isuzu ute !!!!!
I love my Jackaroo's '89 and 90
Mine too, brought it second hand 2003, traded for a toyota 4yrs later, then saw it for sale again two years later on parramatta rd...😄😄 2.1turbo diesel, was slow, but very rugged.
I swap the front axle of my 99 trooper with 80 series axle. Perfect match and same 10:43 rasio
thanks mate, good on ya Roothy!
That jackroo is surely one tough rig,
Only tires upgraded yet went where highly modified ones would struggle
Heads up isuzu
Wow...that is a very entertaining video and enjoying to watch...thanks for sharing these videos mate ✌
I don't buy it! Set up! The Jackeroo/Isuzu clearly got through the sand much faster and it did the legal shortcut. Roothy lost time diagnosing the PTO and didn't do the short cut.
Never underestimate an Isuzu!
What did they call those? "The Iron Pig"??
The things I would do for a 55 with roothy printed across the front of the bonnet. Weapon
What an absolute classic and brilliant production! Where's Glenno these days? Hey Roothy you should have taken out the handbrake instead the handline.... you would have won 🤣🤣🤣🍻🍻🍻 Bloody awesome
Cheers
Unbelievable prices.. As of today, a 1st gen isuzu bighorn(that's what it is actually) in condition like that would cost like 10x times more in my country and the FJ-55 would be ... priceless. It's even got all the body panels straight and no rust holes anywhere. Could easily go for like 50k USD or even more, there is just none on sale, and been like that for years now. it's easier to get FJ-40 series than FJ-55. It's a thing of collection and rarity by now.. Can't say the same for isuzu, though, they've got no collection value.. Still a very capable old thing and deserves respect and care.
Too right, and much the same here - but in the day they were everywhere and nobody wanted them. If only...
very nice video.
The first thing when looking at faults on a car is always look at the fuse box first then work your way back simple if fuses and relays work ok, start hunting then good luck 🙏
Those old jacks with the 2.8 td were bloody awesome. Had a petrol was pretty shit.
Ahh yes, these are videos I miss; especially the original with pat rangy vs MQ patrol lol
Googled the newspaper headline at 15:09. It's the paper from sept 9, 2008.
Imagine being able to buy a 55 series for a couple of grand now.
I reckon
my old 55 didnt come with power steering . but she was still fun to drive. and she was thirty old girl too
Gimme the ole iron pig any day
I bet the film crew in the back up cars were in landcuisers 😀
I met glen years ago just as a kid
And funnily enough we met him in my dads jackaroo
Wonder what he’s up to these days
Dunno, but I reckon it'll involve going quick somewhere - he loved driving.
Great episode thumbs up like seeing the ugly duck not many out there and the Jackaroo liked this one as thay got put thew the test not trashed would love to see a tour with them and show that you don't need the newest to have fun and Lurne the ropes I'm in the process of getting the old xj jeep back on the road slow going with the handbrake keeping eye on things.keep up the good work Ruthy got a soft spot for 40 series had two fj45 s out of reach these days and handbrake reckons there to old and grew up going down the Otways Vic with pop and his mates in Suzi lj50
I used to think the fj55 was as ugly as a hat full of ass holes but compared with the new stuff ....their beautiful and 100 times stronger 💪
Damn open diff, thirsty 2F valve burning engine, what more would you need ? Mine cost me a heap to keep.
So where was the forest segment filmed? Chichester / Barrington area?
Yep, all filmed around Newcastle and Barringtons -
FJ 55, cool.
That 55 is awsome... but the sound track...what were people thinking back in the days?
Soundtrack is fucken awesome.
Would love a 55 for that price
14.45 Exhaust note sounds better than any $2k truck deserves to. Was there a bit more work than new tyres added?
Just basic tuning stuff. Great motor!!
The 1980’s called....they want their soundtrack & voice over guy back for the price is right.
I can’t tell are these videos from the 90s? Or recent?
i watched through most of this just to see the PTO in action only to find out it didn't work lol
I'd like to see the jackroo go where the cruiser went I don't think it would have made it though lol
What do you mean? They did the same route! If anything the 55 bailed on doing the tough short cut. Jackeroo clearly won.
SWB and light weight - the Isuzu Jack is a great thing off-road!
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY wow !! you finally admit to liking a Jackaroo !!!
Roothy slowed himself down by talking so much and when roothy was driving on the hi way the scenes where the same with that red ford he passed.
🤙🤙🤙🤙
Wonder if you kept that Pig John?
No, bloody should have eh? It was rusty - but worth repairing now!
Gday Roothy, me and my partner have been traveling around Australia for the last year in our HJ47 Troopy. Around March or April while on the Ayre Peninsula in South Australia, almost near a town cold Cummins near Port Lincoln we pulled into a property with a green 40 which looked exactly like Milo 1! It had the shortened back, the cut guards, exhaust stack, flip up tailgate and all the old 4wd Action stickers! No one was around to ask except a little kid and we didn't want to scare him so left and didnt grab a picture. I thought Milo 1 ended up in a museum? But i'm 99.9% sure that was your original Milo 1! She wasnt stolen anything was she? Also just need to clear up with some friends an family as they don't beleive i saw it, wish i actually grabbed a picture.
There is an episode where roothy meets a guy who rebuilt milo for his son, might be that car?
Milo 2 on test part 7 is the video
OK, not as far as I know - but now I have to go check. Lke the guys said Milo2 replica is out there in SA near Purina, but you wouldn't mistake them as a 47 owner. Thanks - and I'll find someone to ask!!! I know the museum - government owned - hasn't done what they said in terms of display set up etc - but she should still be there!
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY Cheers Roothy, definetly was not Milo 2, and yeah as I said, 99.9% sure it was your orignal Milo 1, the kid when we asked said his dad got it for really cheap.
Not a very transparent show I reckon the jackaroo would’ve been at the finish hours earlier
It's Jackaroo not Jackeroo
Good pick up - thanks!
That 55 series would be 30k plus now days
Gumtree cheapest option normally…..
How much will that FJ55 cost now 😭
It was rusty like all the breed but in that condition I reckon it'd be 40Kish??
Roothy, you were beat by a Jackaroo not a Jackeroo
If filmed today would have been cancelled in the first 30s "jill"
