Yes, this is and all time favorite. Not trying to sound as morbid yet I would only hope that when I pass away, my request for this song to be played may be respected...
The Beatles were a musical miracle. They were the greatest band in history, and nobody else has ever come close. They laid the foundation for so much of what has been taken for granted in popular music over the past sixty years. It is impossible to calculate the depth and reach of their influence on popular music.
The child that Paul wrote the song for was John Lennon's son, Julian. The song started out as "Hey Jules," but Paul changed it to Jude to not be so directed at Julian. As the song developed, you can tell that Paul was also directing it at John Lennon, who had recently left his wife (Cynthia) and became a somewhat scandalous item with Japanese-American artist Yoko Ono. That makes lines in the song make more sense, such "You have found her, now go and get her." Great song... one of the all-time best.
I think Julian knew the song was for him. As I understand it, a big part of the reason it was changed from Jules (Julian's nickname) to Jude is because the hard “d” sound at the end of the syllable is better for singing purposes than the “ls” sound. Ending on a sibilant sound is particularly challenging for singers.
End of the Beetles is coming, I was a kid and loved this track on our mono radio before school. It's well documented that John didn't like this song for reasons stated, including the band not liking Yoko much especially during recordings. But here is the record breaker, this being the longest Beetles song of 5 mins plus depending on the version you listen too.
I always say; The Beatles sit on the top shelf! Untouchable! Then there is everyone else. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of everyone else's that are brilliant too. But nobody competes with The Beatles. Nobody! Beautiful!
nostalgic prejudice. That's all. For me half the artists that cover these songs, do it better than Beatles themselves. So how can they be at the top then?
@@vladG30 : Because you have a “tin ear”. Other than the Ringo sung, “With A Little Help From My Friends” covered masterfully by Joe Cocker, name more covers of Beatle’s songs, that are better than the original?
The first time I saw Paul live, he ended the main set, before the encore, with Hey Jude. We na na na-d for 20 minutes. Then, he came back. We were still na na na-ing. He joined us. It went on for about another 5 minutes.
I'd loved to have been at that gig. Fortunately, I will be at both his Manchester gigs in December so I will be na na, ing my head off for weeks after.
They were ahead of their time. Consider the song "She's Leaving Home," It's wild how these guys, so young, could dive into such deep stuff about growing up and family dynamics. The song's like a snapshot of life's emotional rollercoaster. Props to the Fab Four for bringing maturity to their music way beyond their years. 🎶✨
I was just sitting here thinking about how naive and hopeful we were about the future back then. Look at that crowd. It represents a slice of humanity. All we wanted was peace and human rights. It makes me very sad to think what the world has become nowadays. 😢
"The movement you need is on your shoulder" was originally a placeholder lyric until Paul thought of something better. John heard it and convinced him to leave it in. To me, it's the best line in the song.
Even though the Beatles broke up when I was 4½ years old I grew up with their music. I became a big fan as a teenager and my favorite concert experience of all time was when I finally got to see Paul McCartney live in 1990. The concert was everything I imagined but near the end when he sat at the piano and started playing Hey Jude and got to the end where the entire arena sang along I thought back to this video and had the most surreal moment ever.
Paul was at peak form as a composer and performer with this song, and the Beatles gave him the perfect accompaniment. Nobody can resist singing along with this track, even today as Paul performs it in concert.
Definitely one of my top 5 music vids ever. Just posted it again a few days ago. Even if someone doesn't like them, they are *factually always going to be the biggest, most iconic, most innovative, and most influential band of all time, even to artists that don't realize their influence upon them due to chain reactions over the years of building blocks. They changed culture itself. Great reaction !
You're sweet, and so was their music. They're always worth a listen. Their sound editing and layering were cutting edge, so even simple songs of theirs can be pure ear candy.
The Beatles hit America when I was 14 and have been part of my musical life ever since. I've literally heard all their songs hundreds of times, to the point where they were playing, but I quit actually listening to them. And "Hey Jude" was one of those songs. Its immense popularity caused it to be overplayed on the radio to the point where I started changing the channel when it came on. Hard to believe, I know. But your reaction video has made me hear it and appreciate it again, for the first time in decades. Seeing and hearing it through your eyes is like a fresh look at an old favorite that I long ago started taking for granted. Your other videos have had a similar, and very unexpected, effect on me also. So thank you for honoring the incomparable genius that was the Beatles and allowing me to appreciate their music again like I did when it first swept across America like a tsunami.
MORE BEATLES PLEASE!!! There’s a very good reason why they are the best selling performers of all time. They were the G.OA.T. You’ll discover why, the more you listen to their music. No two songs sound alike and they traversed many different genres of music over the coarse of their relatively short career.
I’m so glad that you pointed out one of my all time favorite lyrics, “Forw well you know that it’s a fool who plays it cool by making his world a little colder”. The genius of Paul McCartney cannot be overstated! Great reaction. 🌺✌️
The big power of many Beatles songs (especially the ones written by Paul) is they make you emotional and you do not always know why. It is as if our genes know when what we listen to is of exceptional quality. It needs no explanation why we get all emotional listening to Hey Jude. Every time I hear it I have goose bumps even after so many years ...
Yeah, watching the Beatle's sing Hey Jude still gets me emotional after all these years :) I had the privilege of seeing Paul McCartney in concert a few years ago and when he led the entire audience in the chorus of Hey Jude, it was a highly spiritual experience !!
Their music had already brought joy to the entire world, but on this day, they brought immense joy to a small microcosm of the world...including young Austin Powers (standing next to Ringo).
You definitely MUST react to more Beatles’ music. Try with The Long and Winding Road, Let It Be, All My Loving, Michelle, A Day In the Life, Hey Bulldog, I Am The Walrus, Here Comes The Sun… and if you like Paul’s writing and composing, you should definitely check out his solo material and the stuff he wrote with Wings, especially tracks like Band On The Run, Coming Up, Here Today, Monkberry Moon Delight, Live And Let Die, Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five, Silly Love Songs, Maybe I’m Amazed, Let ‘Em In, Ebony And Ivory (with Stevie Wonder)… If you want other stuff from their solo careers, I think George’s I’ve Got My Mind Set on You, When We Was Fab, and his song with the Traveling Wilburys, Handle With Care… and pretty much anything he ever recorded on his own. Just like Paul, he had great ear for melody. I do have to admit I’m firmly a Paul girlie though so I’m more on the side of pushing the Macca propaganda. But yeah, if you want to look deeper into their music there is a whole beautiful world to explore! If you want to listen to their albums as a band, I recommend Rubber Soul, Abbey Road, Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and if you wanna check out their earlier albums I recommend With The Beatles, Help! and A Hard Day’s Night. But, honestly, finding a least worthy album among theirs is really hard. My favorite is Abbey Road, and it’s the one I always recommend the most. So there’s that.
They were larking about before the start of their song and just before paul sang the opening line he whispered a variation of the vocal in a little practice of that line, all proving it as a live performance, the emotion gets to you when the audience all come together to join in the songs crescendo. The Beatles, best band ever.
Singing for Julian. Uncle Paul wrote this for John's son and for John himself, he is telling John to go after Yoko as well as consoling John's child during the divorce of his mom and dad.
George Martin wrote a score for 36 musicians that makes its entry at 5:55. The song stayed at # 1 for nine weeks and sold over nine million copies as a single. It first aired in the US on the Smothers Brothers show on October 8th, 1968. Since its release, millions upon millions have sung the " Na, na " chorus.
I was about 9 years old when this aired, and I still go back to this moment in time when I need some warmth. My Mom used to sit down and listen with me when I played this on my stereo; a memory I will always treasure. Great upload.
The Beatles did so many things first in their music and they still influence bands today, they were masters of their profession. They had two great vocalists Paul and John, even Ringo and George could sing, they were the perfect band. Here we are 60 years later still listening to their music, how many bands can say that.
One of the best recordings ever by in my opinion the greatest rock and roll band of all time. Watching and listening to this special performance on the David Frost program with you made me feel like a kid again hearing this for the very first time. It made me emotional as well. Thank you for providing this most pleasant musical experience.😃
I used to write Hey Jude in bold letters on the old-fashioned chalk blackboard before form teacher came back after lunch. "Who did that?" "I know it's No1 but everyday I have to rub it off". This record one of the many pop anthems that Beatles and others produced. All you need is Love etc etc. Oh so lucky to have been growing up during this period. Pop music played on school bus, transistor radios under the bed covers at night. I reckon it helped us get through school and exams endbof 60s.
I think that the four of them were the greatest music generating machine the world has seen. Lennon, McCartney and Harrison spent their late teenage years in Hamburg as full time musicians, literally playing eight hours a day, every day. They became expert musicians and judging by their lyrics, which are way beyond their years, they lived life at the max. I don't think that there is another song with a chorus that is so universally recognizable, and easy to sing along with. Yes, do more Beatles. My favorite is She Loves You, a 1963 pop banger that for many years was the largest selling single ever in the UK, but which never made it to Number 1, because their I Want to Hold Your Hand peaked at the same time.
I've always (since 196 9:34 9) said that Paul's lyric "Well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool by making his world a little colder" is one of best ever written, he cleverly makes use of the various ways in which the word 'cool' had been used, rhymes it with 'fool', and makes it meaningful as a maxim too! The Beatles' lyrics were always a guide to life and love (and peace), including their early romantic love songs like 'She Loves You' with the lyrics "Pride can hurt you too. Apologize to her.", or 'You're Gonna Lose That Girl', 'Can't Buy Me Love', etc.
Hi there. Few people mention the fact that there's black people and Indian, in the crowd wich is something you would not see often by then. The Beatles practice the "we're all the same humanity. They allways refused to play to segregated audiences when it was rule in USA. Great musicians and great souls 😊
It's very cool that during their last 2-3 years as a band, They got closer to their fans than they'd ever been..Including the impromptu rooftop concert around a year later, where many got to see them close-up and sit near them one last time.( The building was in the middle of London's business district, all offices workers left their desks to find the best seat on nearby roofs) Fun reaction!
It's been almost 60 years since the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan and 53 years since they broke up. And, here we are, almost 60 years later and people are still talking about them, there are people who are just being introduced to them and their songs are still being played and they will still be talked about in another 60 years. No other band will come close to what the Beatles did. They were amazing!!!
they began by playing, by ear, the theme to "the david frost show," the show they were appearing on. after david frost's intro they went into a intentionally bad rendition of "its now or never" a popular elvis song released in 1960. the beatles had a particularly odd and often self-deprecating sense of humour. this is an excellent video of "hey jude" but the recorded, studio version of the song is even better. this was the 2nd biggest selling song of the 60s. topped only by "sugar, sugar" by the archies of all things. thanks for the video.
@@StanEngland... its a catchy tune. that's for sure. personally i like it. a lot of the super-pop and novelty songs from the 60s and early 70s were actually quite good. unlike the corporate created pop crap that replaced it later. and that we still suffer from today. i wonder, are the archies in the r&r hall of fame? everyone else and their dog is. why not include a non-existant, cartoon band as well?
This song is about John's son Julian who was having a bad time because John divorced his wife and married Yoko Ono. So he's just letting him know things will be okay.
This song is such an Iconic Love Story that Starts so simple and as an advise from a friend that's unconditional, then it progresses into a total harmony for all the people to sing as if wanting to make a connection from one to another and then it becomes everybody's love song as if everybody wishes it could happen to them but the Harmonics of all the voices becomes One Giant symphony and even their voices blend A perfection of Echos where you and her and them are almost indistinguishable from a guitar or the piano or the horns, Bass and drums... It's Basically All of It in ONE VOICE and the Melodics from everyone singing in Harmony transforms into a Hymn of Joy that could be sang for hours on end without ending... This Song should've been a World's Anthem for all the people to Unite together...❤💙🤍💜
I love to see young people appreciating this music from 50+ years ago. In a similar vein, I reckon you would love Let It Be (has to be the album version though).
"The movement you need is on your shoulder" was a part of the lyric that Paul was concerned about and he took it to John to get alternate suggestions and John said No, keep it like that. So Paul trusting his friend kept it in
Paul wrote it to John's son. One of the best songs EVER written. But then again, Paul was the best writer! Go ahead and argue but just stop people. You'll get nowhere. You are just a delight Inna, and I enjoy your videos everyday. Puts a smile on my face...thank you for that simple moment once a day! 🤟🍻
btw one of the best lines ever 'For well you know that it's a fool Who plays it cool By making his world a little colder' another words if you act too cool you will just look dumb you won't impress that girl. you will just turn her off.
Paul wrote this song for John's son Julian, originally singing "Hey Jules," as Paul was driving out to see Julian after John and his first wife Cynthia got divorced in 1968. John also interpreted this song as John singing to John, saying, "You have found Yoko (waiting for someone to perform with), so go out and be with her now," which John did in a series of concerts and avant garde artistic events.
If you REALLY want to hear this song, listen to the version by Wilson Pickett. Skydog (Duane Allman) talked him in to doing the song during a lunch break in the studio. Wilson had originally rejected it. It ended up being Wilson's biggest hit in America.
Sir Paul McCartney recently toured the U.S (during the "Got Back" tour of 2022). I saw him in Seattle with my daughter who was not familiar with the Beatles. When Sir Paul came out for his encore, he was carrying a huge Ukrainian flag as a show of support. As you were born in Ukraine, I wanted you to know about his support for your native country. As for my daughter, I wasn't sure I got through to her how wonderful it was to see Sir Paul McCartney in concert. Then one day shortly after the show I saw her wearing a Beatles sweatshirt she purchased.
Love your spontjaneous emotion young lady!.. Its so moving ..then again it is a timeless masteriece that keeps on giving. The Beatles a gift from the Divine for our enjoyment.
They were joking around at the beginning. When David Frost said they were the greatest tea room band in the world, they go into a sloppy version of It’s Now Or Never’.

The Beatles will live forever there songs will resonate through the universe till the end of time.
Apologize to her.", or 'You're Gonna Lose That Girl', 'Can't Buy Me Love', etc.
my mums name is Judi of course she loved this song as a 60's kids
Hi there. Few people mention the fact that there's black people and Indian, in the crowd wich is something you would not see often by then. The Beatles practice the "we're all the same humanity. They allways refused to play to segregated audiences when it was rule in USA. Great musicians and great souls 😊
Greatest song of all time 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Yes, Inna, please do more Beatles! 🎶🫶
I like how Lennon tries to make McCartney laugh.
It's so fun to see the crowd joining in.
Number 1 in the charts when l started school in England in 1968 🎉🎉
Once upon a time...music was created that will last forever ❤❤❤❤
It's been almost 60 years since the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan and 53 years since they broke up. And, here we are, almost 60 years later and people are still talking about them, there are people who are just being introduced to them and their songs are still being played and they will still be talked about in another 60 years. No other band will come close to what the Beatles did. They were amazing!!!
@@iammrig Yes it is 53. My fingers were typing faster than my mind was thinking.
@@iammrig I fixed it
5:03 I love that Paul mimics the "ooh... fucking hell" that is on the studio version.
they began by playing, by ear, the theme to "the david frost show," the show they were appearing on. after david frost's intro they went into a intentionally bad rendition of "its now or never" a popular elvis song released in 1960. the beatles had a particularly odd and often self-deprecating sense of humour.
this is an excellent video of "hey jude" but the recorded, studio version of the song is even better. this was the 2nd biggest selling song of the 60s. topped only by "sugar, sugar" by the archies of all things. thanks for the video.
sugar, sugar" by the archies - has to be the greatest 'payola' hit ever. Not terrible, but waaaaaay! over -played.
A very British sense of humour I might add.
@@TheCornishCockney... i bet i can guess what country you're from. know what i mean, nudge, nudge.

Inna,
what a wonderful journey awaits you listening to the great songs from these freaks of talent
I love to see young people appreciating this music from 50+ years ago. In a similar vein, I reckon you would love Let It Be (has to be the album version though).
Definitely album version
"The movement you need is on your shoulder" was a part of the lyric that Paul was concerned about and he took it to John to get alternate suggestions and John said No, keep it like that. So Paul trusting his friend kept it in
best sing-along song❤
I was lucky to be around when the Beatles and all the other bands became famous. Great times !
Emotional? As you should be, perfectly natural way of responding to this beatuiful piece.
btw one of the best lines ever
'For well you know that it's a fool
Who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder' another words if you act too cool you will just look dumb you won't impress that girl. you will just turn her off.
Nearly every Beatles song had something new and unique in it, musically and/or lyrics. The vocal harmonies were extraordinary for a rock N Roll band.
Your enthusiasm brightened my day? Good Luck and God Bless.
If you REALLY want to hear this song, listen to the version by Wilson Pickett. Skydog (Duane Allman) talked him in to doing the song during a lunch break in the studio. Wilson had originally rejected it. It ended up being Wilson's biggest hit in America.
WHAT a cover by the wicked Pickett!
It drips with emotional soul, and McCartney himself said he loved it by WP.
right on!@@TheCornishCockney
I have heard this song so many times in my lifetime but have never really listened to the lyrics properly. I am finally starting to connect to it.
They didn’t want to share their glitter with clown Frost. So they did the stupid song part first.
The Beatles became a Legend and live in our hearts forever!!
Absolutely! The Beatles' music continues to inspire and captivate generations even to this day. Their legacy will always remain timeless
