You hit the nail on the head when you said it was a genuine cry for help because John said later that he was going through a bit of a down period even in the middle of Beatlemania and all the success they had, so when he sang Help! he meant what he was singing.
Beautiful reaction, Steph. Yes, this song was a very authentic plea from John for support when he was awash in The Beatles stardom but experiencing personal challenges coping with that.
The Beatles were way ahead of their time, musically and visually! A nice contrast to this video would be their "REVOLUTION' music video from 1968. Both the song and performance are a lot more edgy, but really terrific! ☮
I think you'd love the, now classic, film they made when they hit world wide fame in 1964. It's called "A Hard Day's Night", and gives a great idea of what Beatlemania was all about. Help was also the title track of their 2nd film, called Help!
Help is one of the Beatles' most recognizable songs, and they had MANY. Their creative output, in quantity and quality, is unmatched in popular music. Originally mostly a cover band for 50's Rockabilly and early Motown, once they got their songwriting wheels moving after their first couple of albums they churned out more successful material in about 6 years than anyone in history. Paul has always been my favorite Beatle. I have seen him live 5 times in my lifetime. In the video, the fake snow got in Paul's mouth and he is trying to get it out. John wrote this song as he was going through a rough time and he had stated that this song was a real cry for help. He called this time in his life as: "His Fat Elvis Period".
For a great look into the Beatles in the earlier part of their career , check out their movies "A Hard Day's Night" & "Help !" and the sound tracks to each . You'll love the movies because as you seem to like to say , "They're so cute !" in them . 🙂
This was John's "Cry for Help"... The concert tour was finished and the Band took a much needed Holiday from everyone and each other. John didn't like sitting at home and was lonely, without knowing what the next plan was, for him OR the Beatles... So he wrote a Song about it.
After Paul McCartney gave a live solo performance of The Beatles song, "Yesterday" in 1965, Ringo came on stage carrying a tall bouquet of flowers for Paul, presumably from a fan. Just as soon as Paul grabbed the flowers from Ringo, the latter quickly walked backwards still holding the flowers, while Paul was left holding nothing but pre-cut stems in his hand. John Lennon originally envisaged this as a slow number and it was the band's producer who encouraged him to place it in their contemporary uptempo mode. This was, in some senses, revolutionary. It's vulnerability with a backbeat.
You should check out the entire Help! soundtrack album. What makes it such a landmark effort in Beatles history (among many such achievements) is it marked the beginning of the Beatles transition from straight up rock and roll to more intricate instrumentation. And the songwriting also became more intense with songs like 'It's Only Love', 'You've Got to Hide Your Love Away', 'I've Just Seen a Face', and especially 'Yesterday.' This was a process that reached its full fruition with their next album 'Rubber Soul.' The first of the really great Beatles thematic albums. Whereas the ones before were more like collections of songs rather than being a cohesive whole.

It´s a song very deep, though it seems so cheerfully, is really Johns asking for help, because he was going through for a deep depression, He suffered so much by the time. In fact the others didn't note his state, it was lots of years late, Paul reflected about that, thinking of John condition, not in that moment.
I grew up with the Beatles, literally, since 1963, and I've never seen that video of Help. I've seen the movie version, which i was expecting, but not this one. As far as I recall.* *lots of time and drugs and alcohol on my part have passed into history since 1965, so I can be forgiven for a senior moment and a brain fart.
Saw this at a matinee in a theater in first release. Completely magical. They were truly clever and brilliant young men, and it's sad that the pressures of life drove them apart. They stopped playing live because they couldn't even hear themselves play from the screaming. I believe they were only truly happy on stage, just the four of them. All music that followed them was influenced by them.
There’s a live version on utube from the Ed Sullivan Show. Check that out! The audience is mostly young girls and this is the first time the Beatles were in America. Myself and almost everybody at the time tuned in to see them. I was seven but my older sisters were teenagers. The house was never the same…..Cheers
unlike solo artists or band leaders last 20 years that have their dedicated following, all four of the Beatles had their own personae, talent, demeanor. All four had massive individual followers, as well as, those fans being a "group" fan.
One thing about the Beatles: I think Paul McCartney expressed best the band's attitude about being famous personalities when he mentioned how they were never comfortable being those stars that get seriously into acting suave/debonair all the time; that they were much more comfortable just being goofballs. McCartney breaking the illusion of playing his bass during the song to grab a big handful of "snow" to dump on Lennon's head is exhibit A here. You should check out their performance of "We Can Work It Out" on this same exact show to watch how Lennon goofs around there.
Just stumbled over your channel and I really like your reaction style, will check out definitely more videos! This one was really a call out for Help by John who was not very happy at that time and also thought he got too fat ("Fat Elvis phase" as he called it) but also reflects the influence of Dylan's more sensible and serious songwriting - they met him one year before and especially John was taken in by his lyrics and George by his folk music. I don't know if you have done it yet as I am new to your channel but you should watch the A Hard Day's Night movie about the day in a life of the group during highest Beatlemania. it is witty, funny and has some of their greatest songs on it (the album is one o their best). It is often considered one of the best music movies of all time like Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads but contrary to this that concentrated on the concert AHDN also shows the band's struggle with fans, fandom, press conferences, and touring but very funny. Especially George and Ringo could show their talent here as actors.
I think you would enjoy their first movie "A Hard Days Night". Great songs. While its a fictional story, it will give you a bit more understanding of what Beatlemania was like.
Steph, thank you for your lovely reaction! The song "Help!" is great. it's one of their best. But, the "promotional" video you saw is shite, if you'll excuse the expression. It's just bare-bones, low-budget video (filmed in B&W, for some reason) and does not do the song justice. Now, if you really want to see them play that song in it's proper context, you should watch their film called "Help!", which they starred in in 1965! "Help!" is one of my favorite comedies from the 1960's and the music included in the film is awesome. It is a great example of early, Pop-culture British humor/comedy, like the kind we would see later, with Monty Python's Flying Circus, for instance. It's also kind of surrealistic, since the 60's were heading that direction due to experimentation with drugs. It's definitely worth watching and I think you will love it! *** Note, one of the main reasons I do not like this video is because it does not show Ringo playing his super-tight drumming! What a crime!
I don't want ruin your new found joy of hearing The Beatles, their songs were often very positive and upbeat compared to other British Bands like the Rolling Stones or The Who. But you might have heard that John Lennon was murdered in 1980 by a psychotic person. Elton John sang a beautiful tribute to Lennon called "Empty Garden". Likewise in 1981, George Harrison sang a tribute to his friend, Lennon called, "All Those Years Ago". In that song Harrison paid Lennon the highest compliment by singing, "You had control of our smiles and our tears, all those years ago". Every true Artist takes control of the deep emotions of the viewer or of the listener of their Art. Lennon, like the rest of The Beatles were true artists.
Two you must hear......Let it Be........and Got to get you into my life....for that song use the original from their Revolver album........ Guaranteed you WILL love both of them!!!!

You are adorable. I’m a huge Beatles fan too! Appreciate u.
unlike solo artists or band leaders last 20 years that have their dedicated following, all four of the Beatles had their own personae, talent, demeanor. All four had massive individual followers, as well as, those fans being a "group" fan.
Should hear While My Guitar Gently Weaps
Strawberry Fields Forever, Nowhere Man, I Need You, Paperback Writer and Rain! Have fun!!
Top selling musicians of all time.
Well! Steph Kitten 🐈you're like the Chicks, back then 🥰 full of energy! Excited 💕😬
So you have now heard John, Paul and George sing.
Which is the favorite?
Plus 100 million girls used to call Paul 'the cute one'.
Amo a the beatles❤ 🇦🇷
Don’t be mistaken, these guys are the greatest of all time
They made a movie called Help which is a riot!
2:06 McCartney: "Help me if you can, I'm feeling down :D"
The punk band the Damned did a really good good cover of this song 🎵
I think you would enjoy their first movie "A Hard Days Night". Great songs. While its a fictional story, it will give you a bit more understanding of what Beatlemania was like.
Early Beatles is the best/ they were a unit that worked together during that era
What an epic song legends
And not forgetting John's heartfelt tribute to Paul, 'How Do You Sleep"
She's going to go far , that Steph Gard
They play so many different styles that it is hard to have one favorite Beatles song
Fun reaction!❤
♥ You gotta check out their song - Norwegian Wood
BTW Ringo is still touring
So is Paul, he's in South America right now, and then will be touring Europe and England in November and December.
the beatles use to mock these production videos in the 60's
