Just starting my rope basket! Thanks for the excellent tutorial. I would say, however, this is not for beginners or those in a hurry to make a project! It takes patience and some prior knowledge of sewing, and a good, heavy-duty sewing machine sure helps.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, this basket is more time consuming then my other rope bowl tutorials because of the continuous fabric strips. But this technique sure makes a super solid strong basket.
That's a really, cute bowl/basket! I think I will make a piece the size of the bowl opening to use as a lid to cover the top of the bowl. I can attach it to the top by joining the two pieces together with about 3 inches of stitching on the edges. I'll make a small side loop on the edge of the lid so that it would hang down over the side of the bowl. Then add a large toggle or flat button to the side which will allow me to close the container. It would make a great house warming gift if made in the color scheme of the recipient's kitchen. Just roll up some dish towels, bar towels, hand cream, jewelry holder, etc., then put them into the bowl and present it to the host. I love all the projects I've seen since subscribing, but this is my favorite so far. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for the excellent video! I have this picture in my head of using just the rope at the bottom of the basket and finishing the top with outdoorsy-colored fabric-covered rope. The idea is to be able to stencil bear silhouettes around the bottom of the basket. What would be the best way to transition from plain rope to rope covered with fabric?
So many wonderful designs and ways to decorate our rope baskets. I think If you want to leave the bottom plain for stencilling then I would add fabric to the rows that are starting your sides at the bottom and then leave some rows plain with no fabric then add fabric again and leave your handles plain with no fabric to match the bottom. Just an idea for you.
Thank you for sharing your expertise. You are a wonderful teacher and your videos are so easy to follow. I’m wondering why the strips for this project aren’t cut on the bias. Is that because you’re folding the edge over?
The strips are folded so no raw edges are shown so I did not cut these strips on the bias. For single strands not folded over than I cut them on the bias. This technique foe the basket makes a real sturdy basket.

Loving this Patti :) the wilder the fabric, the more interesting the basket! Can't wait to share it with my daughter because I know she'll be wanting to give it a try for sure. Thank-you so much (big Canadian one eh!) xoxox
I am excited to make these, however my first needle broke and my replacement needle won't go through the cord easily. Should I use a heavy duty needle and thread? Or is my machine not sturdy enough to sew through it? My cord is standard craft cord from Joann's. 6mm, 95% cotton and single layer fabric strips.
I’ve seen a few videos bfor I jump in to my project , most of them tell you to cut fabric on bias . I noticed you didn’t or did I miss that part ? Seems to me it would stretch better on the bias what’s your opinion?
Hi Patti, Have you any tips on preventing the twisting of the rope and strips of fabric, I have done the fabric strips as you have and put it on a cardboard but I am having to sew a bit, take it out of the machine to untwist then do a bit more. I have a ball of rope on a spool at the top of the machine at the moment.
Hi June. I have published many rope bowl videos and have a playlist. Here’s a link. ua-cam.com/play/PLp6o7Vy1aS_X3YAB8rzu2g01VwfZ67gEg.html In each of these videos have tips and tricks. I like to unravel the cord first and then wrap into a ball. I place it in one of my rope bowls on the floor at my feet. It’s much easier to wrap the cord that way. And you can turn the bowl on the floor to keep the cord from twisting.
Yes, this type of wrap for a bowl is the most labor intensive but it creates a very sturdy durable bowl. I have other rope bowl videos that show different ways of cutting the fabric and wrapping the cord.
This method of wrapping uses quite a bit of fabric and easier to cut the strips with the grain and not necessary to cut on the bias. But cutting on the bias does give more stretch and makes it a bit easier to wrap your rope. This wrapping technique makes a real strong sturdy basket. Being as there are no raw edges open you have a clean edge with no ravelling. If I am doing a basic wrap with fabric then I will cut bias strips to help reduce frayed edges.
Here’s a video I published that goes over :How to choose the right tools for making rope bowls ua-cam.com/video/8jrm5vwhXAc/v-deo.html Time stamp 3:59 for needles 90/14 universal or denim needles
You could try and use vinyl that looks like rawhide. It’s thinner than actual leather and easier for wrapping with. Real leather will be thick for the sewing machine to sew through. That might work better with a hand sewn bowl.
Thank you Patti I have watched numerous rope basket tutorials. Yours are by far the best. I appreciate your organization and your clear concise instructions. Do you sell your rope bowls, baskets and hand bags? What platform do you use? Thanks again. Elizabeth
Thanks so much Elizabeth for all your support and kind comment. At this point in time I am not selling my arts and crafts. I usually give them as gifts.
I'm new to this. Is this kind of sewing hard on your machine? I have a baby lock machine, however, I have an older brother. Do I need an industrial type machine? Your video was very informative thank you 😊
I have made many baskets and bowls on my husky machine. It’s a basic machine but a good machine. You don’t need an industrial sewing machine. Thanks for watching!
Hi Patti... I stated a basket, got the bottom nice and flat, thanks to your tips, but when trying to get the sides to actually form, I’m having a problem. I’m holding the base up next to machine but I’m only getting a very slight change. I think I’m just going to be making placemats at this point. Any suggestions? I’ve watched all your videos - several times Thanks
Oh dear. Once you get the hang of it you will all set. Trying bringing the cord that is in your right hand a little higher than the bed of your sewing machine until you see the sides forming.
I have a rope bowl playlist with lots of videos. Have a look and Im sure one of them will help you to form your bowl. Here’s the link ua-cam.com/play/PLp6o7Vy1aS_X3YAB8rzu2g01VwfZ67gEg.html
I have done a few different rope bowl tutorials. The first ones I did I just cut basic strips and that works fine but it is much better to cut the fabric on the bias as the material does not fray on the edges very much and there is more stretch to the fabric and easier to wrap the rope with. So yes, cut the fabric strips on the bias. I now have a video showing how to cut fabric strips on the bias.
I look for colourful fabric at my local fabric store in the discount rack. So usually don’t pay any more than $7.00 a metre. I look for big areas of color in the material that I like rather than the actual design.
Any sewing machine. Doesn’t have to be a fancy machine. As long as it will do a wide zigzag stitch and you can raise your presser foot high enough for the rope to fit under.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts You put both the “balls” (cord and fabric) on the lazy Susan and turn it around. It “unturns” the cords. I used one when I was knitting a jacquard sweater.
Yes! You can wash them. I have a video on washing the baskets/bowls in the actual washing machine to see how they held up. They did fine. Then I just let them air dry. Thanks for your support and watching!
No, it wasn't folded in half. I cut my strips at 1 1/4" and I only folded over 1/2". So when you have your folded edge on the top and you are winding your fabric down it will cover the bottom raw edge. I purposely only wanted to fold over 1/2" to create less bulk. Hope that makes sense.
I didn’t fold them quite in half so it would reduce the bulk. This type of fabric wrapping makes a really sturdy basket. For this video I wasn’t concerned with raw edges so I didn’t bother cutting the strips on the bias. But if you have watched some of my later rope bowl videos I do show how to cut the fabric strips on the bias for more stretch and less ravelling on the edges. I like that technique as well. Many ways to make the fabric covered rope bowls.
I have subscribers all over the world and most countries can and will use Amazon.com. Most of my subscribers are in the US so I became an Amazon Affiliate for .com. Yes, most of the time you can get the product in Canada and the US. I would have to also become an Amazon affiliate for .ca which would mean double the links in the description box. It’s a lot of time and work to produce, edit and publish videos and search out all the links and I am so busy just keeping up with the 3 social media sites that I have. I just don’t ever get the time to do more for my channel. But I will think about it for the future.
No, I didn't use invisible thread. I used black as it was the dominant color in the fabric I used. If you look at the video you will see the black zigzags on the fabric. If you don't like to see the zigzags you could certainly use invisible thread if you prefer that look.
Do you sell these it just make as a hobby? I would like to make these to sell... But just alone the price of the rope is around $20 and I see a bunch of the larger bowls in Etsy for sale around $20. I can't seem to find it cheap
If they are selling them for $20 each then there is a good chance they are losing money on them. I have seen them for sale for up to $75 each. If you want to sell your crafts then figure out the cost of your materials then decide how much you want to get paid per hr. Add your hourly wage + materials and that’s what you need to charge for your item. I don’t sell a lot of my items. I give them to friends and relatives for gifts.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts that's so nice of you! I have a flower shop and that's similar to how I price my items. I just didn't know if I was looking at the wrong suppliers for the rope. 😁 Thank you for replying!
I pay about $18 for 100 ft hank of rope for the 1/4”. I can make 2 small baskets out of that. Yeah, the rope is on the expensive side and I haven’t found any cheaper place to buy it. I’ve looked on Amazon and all my local hardware stores, Walmart etc. But I figure it’s worth it for the joy I get out of making them.

I have a 3 step zig zag on my machine. Would that work ok
As long as it holds the two ropes together you are set to go.
These are beautiful! Did you use cotton or polyester thread?
I use polyester thread because I find it stronger.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thank you! I am starting to make one this morning. Stay safe and stay well.
How do you stop the fabric from fraying , I used a cotton fabric,, you have ni frayed edges.
On this particular rope bowl I have sewn all the strips together as well as folding the strip so there are no raw edges on the surface.
What kind of sewing machine do you use
I used my old Husqvarna manual machine for this rope bowl.
when you finish the end............ could you create a snail from the final spiral ?? ;-)
You certainly could. Thanks for sharing your cute idea!
Thank you so much for that tip! If I can figure out how to a picture - I’ll show you my basket.
Would love to see your finished basket!
I posted it on your page. Thanks again.
Perfect. Thanks Amy!
Yoiused 16 meters/yds of rope, how much fabric did you use?
Aprox 1 metre of fabric.
Enjoyed your tutorial; you said you had 100 strips using 1 metre.
my question is what is a metre in regards to yardage to buy?
1 metre = 1.09 yards.
Crafty Patti thank you; looking forward to doing this project.
I really enjoyed your teaching on this beautiful basques thanks so much 🌹😁👌
baskets and basques are not the same thing !!
I’m sure it is in the comments somewhere, but how do you start the turn please help
Easier for you to watch the video than for me to try and explain in words.
Thank you for tutorial off to the shops to buy some cord!
Very nice👍
very nice thank you for the lesson!!!
Still wondering how you got it form in the bowl
I have a rope bowl playlist with lots of videos. Have a look and Im sure one of them will help you to form your bowl.

Did you cut the strips with the grain? I thought it necessary to cut on the bias.
Thanks, great tutorial finally. Where did you find that great fabric?
I buy all my fabrics from my local fabric store and look for the discounted fabrics.
Hello dear i see your video and try for this bt my rope can't stich in machine
Oh no. You can usually raise the presser foot a bit higher with a lever in the back on manual machines.
Where did you get the fabric you are sewing over your rope?? I REALLY want that fabric!!!!
I look for colourful fabric at my local fabric store in the discount rack. So usually don’t pay any more than $7.00 a metre. I look for big areas of color in the material that I like rather than the actual design.
How many yards of fabric does this size of bowl need?
Between 1/2 and 3/4 of a yd.
What needle size, please?
I figured it out! Use 100.
I generally use a leather or jeans needle.
What brand and model sewing machine will see rope? Thanks
Any sewing machine. Doesn’t have to be a fancy machine. As long as it will do a wide zigzag stitch and you can raise your presser foot high enough for the rope to fit under.
A lazy Susan is a life saver in this type of wrapping.
I’m not sure where the lazy Susan would help with this type of rope bowl made on the sewing machine but if it helps you then by all means.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts You put both the “balls” (cord and fabric) on the lazy Susan and turn it around. It “unturns” the cords. I used one when I was knitting a jacquard sweater.
Got it. Thanks for sharing your tip!
Do you prewash your fabric?
Generally I always pre wash my fabrics. Good idea if you are using your bowls for food items.
Thanks, Patti. I guess you would then be able to wash the finished bowls if needed. Really enjoy your channel.
Yes! You can wash them. I have a video on washing the baskets/bowls in the actual washing machine to see how they held up. They did fine. Then I just let them air dry. Thanks for your support and watching!
I love them all also want to make them all
So many different baskets and bowls to make. It is endless what you can do for sure. Enjoy!
Thank you for this tutorial ❤️
Your very welcome!
The fabric was folded in half when you started wrapping it, correct? If it wasn’t wouldn’t there be raw edges?
No, it wasn't folded in half. I cut my strips at 1 1/4" and I only folded over 1/2". So when you have your folded edge on the top and you are winding your fabric down it will cover the bottom raw edge. I purposely only wanted to fold over 1/2" to create less bulk.
Hope that makes sense.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts I get it now, I also thought you folded the fabric strips in half. BTW, you didn't cut the strips on the bias, right?
I didn’t fold them quite in half so it would reduce the bulk. This type of fabric wrapping makes a really sturdy basket. For this video I wasn’t concerned with raw edges so I didn’t bother cutting the strips on the bias. But if you have watched some of my later rope bowl videos I do show how to cut the fabric strips on the bias for more stretch and less ravelling on the edges. I like that technique as well. Many ways to make the fabric covered rope bowls.
Great instructions
Thank you!
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts I’ve made several bowls, but always had trouble beginning and ending. This was a big help.
Perfect! Glad it was helpful!
hi there why American links to amazon when you are based in Canada ? Dont they have this stuff here too ? lol
But I will think about it for the future.
thank you for sharing your craft, beautiful
Did you use invisible thread?
