How to Change a Toilet Seat

  • In this video I show you how I replaced a cheap, laminated wood effect toilet seat with a decent quality solid wood toilet seat.
    You can buy me a coffee here www.buymeacoff... or become a monthly member to unlock Discord forum membership, exclusive content and automatic entry into my FREE Monthly Giveaway. Thank you SO SO much!!
    You can now access my 🛠Charlie DIYte Amazon Tool Store here www.amazon.co.... - where you'll find all my tried, tested and much loved DIY tools arranged into handy categories.
    In life you get what you pay for, and the wood effect toilet seat, which came with the toilet, which I fitted a couple of years ago in our bathroom, has not worn well. The rubber washers that cushion the seat brackets from the toilet had split, causing the seat to move around too freely. Also, the seat itself has delaminated - meaning that the wood effect laminate has separated away from the mdf core beneath - which is not particularly hygienic.
    So I went on-line, and bought a ROPER RHODES "Malvern" solid wood toilet seat.

    Thank you for this. My toilet seat broke and I got an instant sinking feeling. I've never had to change one before and I've had a string of bad luck with tradesmen. So I turned to the good old UA-cam.
    I know you mentioned it not being the most complicated of tasks, but some of us have honestly not known this. I've definitely been conditioned to think any DIY task is too hard for me alone and I need a mans help.
    So thank you for taking the time to film and talk through a quick simple task. It was explained and shown very clearly and effectively. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping others become more independent 😊

    My toilet seat actually CAME OFF yesterday... and crashed down onto the toilet brush holder shattering it into bits! One of the metal bolts had rusted through completely allowing the whole kit and kaboodle to slide off. Mind you, the loo was installed in 1967... can't complain, eh!? I was going to replace the bolt, but no... it's Christmas 2020! Feeling inspired to tackle the job... liked the video!!

    I watched the video and I have to admit that your old toilet seat was better than this new one that you installed.
    It's amazing how much better and better quality old things are made than new ones.
    You just had to tighten the old toilet seat, that's why today we have fittings for the toilet seat, which is cheaper than buying a new one.

    Thank you. I watched others do this, but you were the one who showed clearly in which order the rubber washer thingy / metal washer / wingnut went on underneath. I'm sure seasoned loo fitters will laugh at me for not knowing - but...I did not know. For example, some 'handy' types assume we know which way round that rubber conical type washer you used is meant to go. They want to show us how _quick and easy_ everything is - so they do things _too_ quickly like a magician doing sleight of hand.
    All we see is a giant hand over the "minor" bits of equipment. Thwarted again by The Hand. My heart sinks. It is NOT "instinctive" with me. I need to be shown everything. My loo seat is now fitted and I feel like a rock star.

      The seat I have just bought is a soft close. There is a diagram on the instructions showing a screwdriver to unscrew the screw on the hinge itself. Are we supposed to loosen something off or tighten it up? That's before we fit the seat.

    Brilliant video. I must say im surprised in this day and age there isnt an easier way to fit a toilet seat rather than having to always go underneath to tighten it in very narrow spaces. Just have a mechanism whereby the toilet see slots into the hole and then locks itself in place somehow.

    Fit a new toilet seat today. For some reason the seat pads only touch the toilet at the back but they're totally raised at the front and only touch the ceramic when you sit on the seat or apply pressure? You can fit your hand between the seat and the ceramic at the front even though they're pressed against it at the back.

    Refit new toilet seat 3 times now and it's STILL got wobble - sitting flush with the bowl but it's still shifting from side to side - I think it's the bracket that's loose because it's solid from the washers down. Having to force it to the side just to line it up but it just keeps shifting again... About to throw it out the window. Oh and the "arms" were rotating as I was screwing in the long screwy go into bowl holes things so I did my best to turn them back round and line them up like you had in the video - I didn't try and tighten the screws holding seat to brackets as they were already flush with it and looked fine...

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  2 роки тому

      Sorry to hear that. Sounds like it's not tightening for some reason. Could it be that the bolts aren't right for your toilet bowl - ie the screw threads aren't looking enough?

      Hi Charlie & Pott2k8,
      I have just watched Charlie’s video, 5yrs after he posted it! No doubt you are well sorted by now I hope 😅, but just in case someone else encounters the same problem, here’s how I found my fix.
      I thought it would be so straight forward as the fittings were exactly as Charlie’s but alas, my toilet seat was screwed really tight, but still it wobbled, exactly as you mentioned. I removed it and realised that the screw inside the bracket where you fix the screw onto needed tightening, once you had lined up the holes! Job done! Charlie’s seat obviously had a different mechanism in his brackets, hence he didn’t need to demonstrate this step. Hope this helps someone.

    Well that looked simple enough. How's that wood seat bearing up now out of interest? I note I'm watching this 6 years later. Im looking to replace a toilet seat from a toilet we had new in 2016 (so 7 years ago) so debating whether to change the soft close seat (stained) or get the same whole new toilet (RAK ceramics). Im on my own so no one to assist as such so thats why watching this. The toilet leaks a bit inside the basin but apart from that is ok. Have got insurance that covers leaking toilets etc. Thank you!

      Still in place and going strong. It could probably do with some new rubber gaskets or whatever they're called under the brackets but it's testament to the fact that if you buy quality it pays off long term.

    What if the (plastic) wingnuts holding the old seat on were apparently applied by A.Schwartzenegger and are impossible to loosen?

    Can you tell me why 1 side of the toilet bracket is always loose please? I've just had the whole thing off to screw in the long pin properly but it's still loose so I'm guessing that's not the issue

    Hi Charlie. I've tried to find a seat like that in Roper Rhodes' collection but all their wooden seats seam to be soft close now. I'm aiming for a white seat and not sure if white is going to fair well as a paint finish on a wood seat though so might need to stick with plastic. I suppose solid wood has the advantage that if it's durability means lit lasts long enough for the finish to be the weak link you could always strip it and respray it. I was taken by the idea of the Roper Rhodes top fix set up and quick release hinges. Then I wondered if maybe the quick release thing was actually a solution to a problem created by big bulky soft close mechanisms, namely cleaning... I guess I might have to look elsewhere for something like the one you fitted. Are there any similar alternatives you could recommend? Those minimal hinges look great for cleaning access and no waiting for the b****y lid to go down before flushing. 👍

    Just wanted to check shouldn't there be like plastic inserts that push into the toilet bowl itself, in which the toilet seat threads go through??.

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  2 роки тому

      I think each seat manufacturer does this differently Mark but those inserts would make a lot of sense. You could alternatively improvise with clear silicone before you are the seat down although this would make it more difficult to remove later..

      Pretty sure they are. It's worth checking though before you buy. The biggest issue is finding a toilet seat to correctly match the shape of your pan.

    In the UK, how do you measure for the correct size of seat? How many different sizes of seat are there? My toilet seat has just cracked and I’m trying to fit it myself, but haven’t a clue what size or type to buy. The current seat slides into a panel screwed down, would I need to purchase the same type of toilet seat? Thanks

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  Рік тому

      Hi Clare, yes sounds like you might need a similar design of seat. Can you see what make the toilet is and Google replacements for that?
