No-one can hack into your paper. No-one can show you ads to distract you. No-one can try to convince you that what you are doing is wrong. It's your paper.
Same with Peter that i love the idea! Pen & paper! Yes! I did it for years using those starbucks planners! Now it's just a big pile that i'm too attached to and now can't seem to get rid off or find use of outside of nostalgia. Cant even tracked down when i crossed any $#!+ out. So i'm doing this digitally now. With a BIG mental note to avoid distractions. Like commrnting on youtube.... 😅🤣😂
Hi Peter! It's been over a year since this video came out and I just want to share that I finally finished doing this for 365 days! Looking back, the little steps I did every day helped me achieve a lot of cool things in the past year. Landed a new job, a side gig doing photography in my free time and a lot of other achievements. It was thanks to this video I was able to pull myself out of the pandemic. Thank you :)
Within the first few seconds of this video I thought of Becki and what a pro and inspiration you are at planning/journaling through writing and crossing off tasks etc. 😂 You are this method, this method is you! it inspires me! 😎
"Starting somewhere instead of starting nowhere at all". Really goes well with that quote of your sister: "Done is better than perfect". And that really helps me through the finish line of all my projects.
I removed all social media from my phone, I then deleted all my social media, I them created my own website, I have a dumb flip phone, but I still use a iPad Pro for work. My journal is a leather cover that had two note books one is for my writing and reading or research, the other is work, study and tasks, I have 3 different quality Parker rollerball pens black, blue and green, I have a pencil as well. Nothing freaks people out more when you’re in a coffee shop reading a book and start underlining things in pencil with a small ruler and start making notes in a notebook.
I started doing this a few years back because I noticed my cousin brought a notebook everywhere. Accomplished so much because of it. It reintroduced me to doodling which led to drawing, full-color drawing with oil markers, then to painting. It then led me to write my own book and challenged me to draw a children's alphabet book within a week. Helped me learn Italian and currently learning Japanese.
As a psychologist, I've recommended this practice to many of my patients. It's not for everyone though, but I do encourage people to try it out. Good to see you're promoting this here.
My ADHD is so bad sometimes that I have to write out a to do list for even just the next hour as I get up, go to the kitchen, put the kettle on, go to the bathroom, make tea, get a snack etc. Like everything has to be planned out sometimes or I will just forget and get distracted. Not to mention all the to do lists of actual tasks and work that I need to do. I can definitely vouch for the to-do list, it basically helps me function.
I suffered from depression a while ago and I couldn't get anything done at all. My thoughts were like a giant ball of chaos, lost my job, wife cheated on me, best friend died from cancer, had to take care of my dog... and on and on and on. This is where I got the suggestion from my doctor to take a pen and a piece of paper and write down all that Chaos in my head. And that's what I did and still do to this day only that I've gotten through with the depression and now the writing is more like a great habit to capture ideas, thoughts and to do lists. Simply taking a few minutes of the day to sit down and write, really can bring some order into that chaos, that procrastination or creative struggle. It helped me a lot.
LOL Yep, I was sitting here WITH my list when the video came up in my feed....Looking at my list, I felt vvveerrrryyyyy sssslleeeeeepyyyyyy, and thus....after this video, I laid down and napped for an hour!! Cuz I was overwhelmed! Then when I got back up, I came back and watched it again! ;)

Dude exactly! I was just explaining to my wife how many people are not in control of their lives. Think about it.... Are you reactive or proactive? Do you wake up or do you set an alarm the night before to control what time you wake up? Do you prepare breakfast knowing you will be hungry or do you prepare breakfast when you get hungry? If you are only reacting to your environment are you really in control of your life? You have to be proactive and take control of your life or it will control you.
I don't agree with this, because setting an alarm is being proactive, choosing the time at which you wake up. Same thing for the breakfast, most people get hungry after a full night of fasting, should I not get hungry to be proactive? If it rains, is it bad that I take my coat? That's reactive, but it's not a bad reactive, it's just adapting to my environment. I would say that being reactive is waiting for things to happen when you could make them happen, because I don't think that every reaction is bad, most are actually good, but not when you consider this to be the normal behavior.
@@highasheaven9239 It was an example, nor did I necessarily say it was bad, nor did I offer my opinion. It was simply an observation, and a thought provoking question, any notion of it being negative is imposed entirely by you. Everything is not meant to be black and white. What parts of your life are better served reactive, dronelike, versus other moments. I sincerely believe the more reactive you are, the faster you blow through life and the more often you will comment, "damn the years are flying by." In the sense I am speaking of, I consider the act of setting your alarm as proactive, hitting snooze reactive. There are people without jobs who wake up when their body says they're done, immediately goes to the bathroom to evacuate waste, eats food because they are hungry and eventually showers because they smell. Versus the person that goes against the temptation to be lazy that we all feel. You have to take control of your day to slow down life, to be able to stop and take it all in. And I thought it goes without saying that obviously there are things in life that are out of your control. Like I'm not going to stand on a railroad track and let it hit me just to prove I'm not reactive. Nor would anyone. I didn't say it because I thought it was obvious

I watched Peter McKinnon's videos for 3 years and it changed my life You're one of em' youtubers out there who inspired me to start my own channel. Can't thank you enough, Pete ❤️
I’ve been journaling on and off for the last few years but really want to start letting it have an effect on my productiveness too. Might have to switch to a small notebook like yours
How one person halfway across the world - who I’ve never met nor interacted with before - could make such a huge impact in my life, is so crazy amazing to me. You got me from 0 to where I am now. You may not know me, but heck I feel like you’ve been such a great friend and mentor all these years. Thank you for being you and sharing that to the world. 🙌🏻
I’ve been doing it in my head for the past 30 years. It’s awesome when you stare at that mirror at the end of the day and go “well done John, good for you”. I’ve tried doing the notebook thing but have realized over time it’s just not for me. What does work is getting up early, making or getting a coffee, sitting down away from your computer or phone and just thinking about the day and what you want to get done, some I mark as stretch goals and work at them. It’s not perfect but it seems to work.
My mom was a list maker, she'd leave a list every night for me to complete. She made herself lists of her daily to DO. I always do better for the day if I keep a list. My son always does better at accomplishing any chores if I write it in a list form for him to complete. It truly changes the mindset.
Loved the video Pete! I finished 75 hard a few weeks ago in which I lost nearly 40lbs, but there is a shit ton of power in one lists and you said and knowing what the goals are with your day. You move differently knowing you have certain things to get done and avoid shit that won't be conducive to those goals!
That intro totally wrapped up everything I feel like. Trouble focusing when there's hundred of things to do and I'd rather do none than one. This was incredible! I've also learned documenting things down and returning to the list is helpful.
“make things bite sized” easily made this one of my favorite videos, apart from me wanting to journal more regularly. bite sized makes so much sense cuz ive tried all forms of to do lists but somehow how i still get overwhelmed
Talk about putting things off... I've been putting off watching this video for a while, and I finally just finished it. I started reading Atomic Habits recently, and more and more I'm realizing that a lot of the things people talk about for leading successful, meaningful lives, really all just boil down to our daily habits. I really like "starting somewhere is better than not starting at all." That's absolutely right. For years now, I've been stuck, not getting enough done because I'm always trying to outsmart myself in a way, and do something really big and grand, meanwhile I constantly put off the smaller, more bite-sized and manageable stuff.
Just found this video but it came in at the exact right time for me. I have a bucket list for my whole life of things I wanna do, places I wanna visit, but I'm starting this everyday notebook thing even if it kills me. I really need the focus too...
I started doing this at work about two months ago when I realized I needed help correlating my thoughts, ideas, needs and feelings into action and I have to say it has really helped. I love the idea of having a book dedicated to this daily list therapy. Fantastic video, thank you Peter.
I’ve used most of the enterprise / cool project management tools...and I’ve stuck with the bullet journal. The less screen time, the better. (I work in front of a screen all day.) Paper / white board / sticky notes are the best for ADhDled brain!
agreed, these guys dont what we would call "traditional jobs" They dont have time scheudles like a 9-5 for example. Posting online can be done anytime and allows them freedom to do 8 tasks a day.
PM you’re killin me!! You have EVERYTHING linked BUT the pen and the notebook!! I’m in the progress of designing my own notebook so the pen is what’s most important to me. I need something cool to edc that won’t leak in my pocked and stain my jeans.
Thanks for making this video. I started doing this and writing stuff on a paper and crossing them off ones the task is done has never felt amazing. I was stalling and postponing stuff every day and now this motivates me do them. Thanks Peter 🙏
When I heard the "8 critical tasks" I was like mmmm this has to be inspired by Andy Frisella, and of course it was! Awesome stuff as always Pete, loved this advice!
I totally relate to the problem. I get so overwhelmed by the amount of things that I have to do and I end not making progress on anything. Gonna give that notebook thing a shot. Thanks for sharing that Peter.
I usually write things on my notebook and cross them off, recently I’ve been procrastinating too much that its become a habit to not do things. And watching this actually help me get things together, cause I’ve become so lazy to write tasks in my notebook that I’ve tried to rely on phone notes which kinda distracts me from real work! Thank you! 🙏
I swear, I can't concentrate when working at home, but when I'm in the office I can work without even looking at my phone. Hell, at home, I distract myself with looking at the kitchen. Gonna be trying this along with my morning journal
love it when someone (you) is good at everything they do, pocket 2 balls on the table in a single shot! even when you're not good at something, you find a way to smash it!! I'm overkill on the notes, i'm gonna pull it back a notch, thx! for the info cheers Donna
I love notebooks! I make time every morning to list my yearly goals in one notebook, then daily tasks in another. I like the idea of a smaller notebook to carry around for the daily tasks. It’s so good for productivity! And I think 5 tasks is probably more manageable than 8
John Grimsmo!!! He has been one of my biggest influences that got me started machining and knife making. Now that I have found photography and your channel and how our passions are similar, just makes me in joy watching and learning even more.
This is actually a really cool idea. I struggle with keep a straight mind, like you said - I will sit down with the intent of doing something but I just don't. I have tried todo lists but I spent more time making and planning my day than doing what matters. Bought myself a nice fountain pen and an A6 book (thats the right size, yeh?!) and I'm going to give it a go. Would love one of Gimsmo's pens but my bank may hate be bit too much. Be good to have an update on this to see how you've been doing!
I also have problems focusing. It’s even harder when I know I should be doing something important, then my brain starts to wander. Writing things down helps ALOT!
Me again. This has changed my life! I tried daily but I would have to move things forward daily. So I used a spread for one week. Everything went down on those two pages. What a relief. No more anxiety over what I haven’t done. . It is all there in my book. No set amount each day. Just keep crossing them off day and evening..THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!
I write in a journal everyday and have for years but I LOVE the idea of 8 critical tasks! Just made a new page in my large journal to try it out. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so so much for the awesome idea & inspiration. I'm on day 88 today for the daily 8CT after watching your vid & although it is such a simple idea, it's a life changer. I have never been this up to date & productive in work & life. I'd say to all those just starting out, honor the words you write to yourself! Thanks again!
This advice actually comes at the PERFECT time! I've been looking for the perfect use for my Pete's Pirate Life black notebooks too. Just made my first 5 tasks for today and we'll see where I am in 30 days
Love that Pete just used his list to tease new things: 1. New website and presets 2. Secret video project 3. New ownership of ??? 4. Podcast with someone cool I need to know what these things mean! 😂
This is interesting. I lived through the age of the pen and paper…taking notes. Now years later a thirty something UA-camr introduces a concept of basically a refined to do list. You live long enough you see things repeat themselves and in an age of false connection and likes and dislikes..( no grey area). It’s so nice to see the old traditions are brought back to life through you and your discovering a new way of focusing your valuable energies. It’s not a new concept but reconnecting with ideas that work is a good thing.
This is all about me. And I also a fan of stationery and notebooks, but I don't have a lot of ideas to write them down... Just started journaling (a couple of months) like when I was young, but that's it for now. Needing a next step, but procrastinating everything.
The best thing I’ve ever done, was keeping a bullet journal. I’ve been more productive for work, I’ve improved my relationships with people, and I’ve kept a lot more commitments as well. I spend more time in the creative aspect of of my journal, but it draws out more of my creativity. Great vid.
Writing is one of my favorite things to do and I have been Journaling for most of my life on and off. I currently have 5 different journals that I use for different things. I find joy in it and so excited for you and this new journey that you are on!! Also, as you mentioned it is great to look back at where you were to where you are currently through your own thoughts, lists and handwriting. 😃
We seem to always be on the same vibes... I’ve been writing lists & crossing off (word to austin kleon) for months now... helps SOOO much with my life! 💪🏼🔥
I just watched this video, I only discovered your channel 2 days ago. After watching it I realised that it came out on my birthday. Wish I had seen it then, but I'm glad that I have seen it all the same. Thank You. This video means a lot to me, I even wrote this entire comment on paper first just to make sure that I put exactly what I wanted to say, instead of firing off another comment that I'll forget as quickly as hitting the enter key.
So..... I'm burning through a shit tonne of your videos this weekend. You've not changed my life twice..... since I woke up.... 4 hours ago. Thanks man.
Good point. I use both but since I can't text with my thumbs (arthritis from too many wrong jobs..haha), it would make sense to keep notebook in pocket so I go for that FIRST!)
I have a bunch of notebooks/notepads with stuff. I recently added PPL log notebook to that collection. I have always like the idea of pen/pencil to paper.
Peter, I'd like to recommend a great book called Make Brilliant Work by Rod Judkins. Talks about focus and would compliment the techniques you mentioned in the video. It's so good!
I'm carrying a notebook with me. Calendar, notes, lists, everything. I want to avoid my phone as much as I can and it works fantastic. I'm more focused on what I'm doing everyday and feel better.
Nice to see a fellow Baron Fig Confidant user! I have carried a small notebook with me everyday for the last 6 years, and I write in them constantly. I’m a singer/songwriter, so it’s a place for those random lines that hit me, and just general thoughts about something that eventually morph into a song. It’s a part of who I am, for sure.
I have always thought that physically writing things down helps me remember to do them and get them done, my only problem is that I end up doing this on scrap paper or different notebooks and then it's just everywhere. Notion has worked wonders for me though just because I always have my phone or computer on me so I always have access to my....well everything.
Hahahahaha dude same! I have so many random scrap pieces of paper and too many notebooks. I gotta designate one and try to keep it organized in its own spot.
I had tears in my eyes in the beginning of the video. We are very similar. I have tons of notebooks and cool pens at home but never really used them. I didnt know how to use them and just used my phone for todos instead. But most of the time i get distracted and dont do my tasks. I am fighting a depressive episode at this moment. This video made me grab my notebook. I am gonna give it a try. At the beginning i will start with 3 tasks and increase the count if i feel comfortable. I am gonna give it a try. Thank you

Love how I felt like I had been unproductive. Tried to get back to my roots and start watching videos for inspiration and this comes up! Thank you!!!!
I really like the format of the Bullet Journal. It's helping me organize my thoughts. I like leaving the To-Do List under 10 items.
I started doing this at work about two months ago when I realized I needed help correlating my thoughts, ideas, needs and feelings into action and I have to say it has really helped. I love the idea of having a book dedicated to this daily list therapy. Fantastic video, thank you Peter.
it works ! Changed my life BIG time . I finally got all the ideas out my system and was able to move on in life and grow up LOL.
Exactly what I’m dealing with “procastination”.
I'm dealing with it tomorrow.
So am I. Why do today something you can do tomorrow ? Lol
Starting somewhere is better than not starting at all ❤️ Start Now!
I’ve used most of the enterprise / cool project management tools...and I’ve stuck with the bullet journal. The less screen time, the better. (I work in front of a screen all day.) Paper / white board / sticky notes are the best for ADhDled brain!
This vid is hitting me right in the soul button- thanks Peter:)
Perhaps 5 critical tasks instead of 8 decreases the overwhelm for me. Love this! Thanks Peter.
I'm also going to start with 5, seems less stressy for me.
Yeah, I thing starting with less and slowly increasing if you feel its too easy is a good thing
agreed, these guys dont what we would call "traditional jobs" They dont have time scheudles like a 9-5 for example.
I relate to this SO much. The number of planners I’ve bought and trashed with 95% unused is embarrassing.
I loved the style of this one man
Thanks for making this video. I started doing this and writing stuff on a paper and crossing them off ones the task is done has never felt amazing. I was stalling and postponing stuff every day and now this motivates me do them. Thanks Peter 🙏
I write the shopping list down before I go food shopping. Then never have to look at it. Writing stuff down is super helpful
Thank you! 🙏
I love working with lists...welcome to the club Pete
I swear, I can't concentrate when working at home, but when I'm in the office I can work without even looking at my phone. Hell, at home, I distract myself with looking at the kitchen. Gonna be trying this along with my morning journal
Fantastic... I'm the same here ... when too many things I STRUGGLE to start. Thank you i'm give it a try. Greatings from Singapore, Covid recovery.
Loved that logo you sketched out 6:47 👀
You inspired me as a designer 🖤watched all ur vids ✨
wud shantanu? haha
The pen is beautiful. I journal and plan but never critical tasks and opening my planner now😋
love it when someone (you) is good at everything they do, pocket 2 balls on the table in a single shot! even when you're not good at something, you find a way to smash it!! I'm overkill on the notes, i'm gonna pull it back a notch, thx! for the info cheers Donna
Peter is my new Productivity Guru. :)
I have tried with so many apps, but nothing like pen and paper for the To Do list.
Be good to have an update on this to see how you've been doing!
update update please
Thanks again!
this is what is holding me at a stand still right now...thank you for posting this video!!
This advice actually comes at the PERFECT time! I've been looking for the perfect use for my Pete's Pirate Life black notebooks too. Just made my first 5 tasks for today and we'll see where I am in 30 days
Its been 30days! How is it going?
Woooow! This thing is really working! Thank you Peter this changed my chaos into order and clarity. 😍😍😍😍🥰🤗😘
Love that Pete just used his list to tease new things: 1. New website and presets 2. Secret video project 3. New ownership of ??? 4. Podcast with someone cool
I need to know what these things mean! 😂
Nothing better than a good pen and a great journal. Been Journaling for years now.
Love this. Been a list writer for years but this takes it to the next level. Definitely improves the mind/ flow
This is so me! It makes me feel good to see I’ve checked things off a list, otherwise I’m all over the place with a million ideas, dreams and goals 😂
It’s not a new concept but reconnecting with ideas that work is a good thing.
this is EXACTLY what I needed right now. Thank you.
Pete: "...I just rather do none of them"
Me: Is he talking about me? lol
This is all about me. And I also a fan of stationery and notebooks, but I don't have a lot of ideas to write them down... Just started journaling (a couple of months) like when I was young, but that's it for now. Needing a next step, but procrastinating everything.
I was just watching your podcast on lew later 😂😂, had to pause that and watch this first.
Are you great
This is the way.
I upload photo editing tutorials come if you want to....!
wait where can I find his podcast? I had been searching on apple podcast ....like ages
@@HenkBartl Look up “Lew Later” on UA-cam
This is really really really very helpful. Thanks got to start implementing immediately
This Is crazy advice I didn't even know I needed. Trying this tomorrow!
Did you try it yet?
Try this today!
Updates?
So..... I'm burning through a shit tonne of your videos this weekend. You've not changed my life twice..... since I woke up.... 4 hours ago. Thanks man.
I keep a note pad by my bedside, but I'm going to start keeping one in my pocket instead of reaching for my phone.
Great tip, thanks!
I want to read that book but I think it is not available here in Philippines.
Was "commenting a Peter Mckinnon video" on your todo list David? Really? Focus David! Fooooooocus.
@@20jeccha10 I am from Philippines tooo. MINDANAO
Also, The Practice by Seth Godin
Finally someone who is relatable
I'm carrying a notebook with me. Calendar, notes, lists, everything. I want to avoid my phone as much as I can and it works fantastic. I'm more focused on what I'm doing everyday and feel better.
good luck... I am inspired.... I'll also do same
I do this for work tasks, pen and paper, but I’ve not incorporated my personal stuff. I’m going to start doing this.
The first thing I write when creating a list is: "Make a list". When I'm done I can cross the first item!
Christopher nolan-esque😂
I love pencil and paper! Great stuff!
"When there's so many things that need to get done, I'd rather do none of them"
I'm in this picture and I don't like it 🤣
Nice to see a fellow Baron Fig Confidant user! I have carried a small notebook with me everyday for the last 6 years, and I write in them constantly. I’m a singer/songwriter, so it’s a place for those random lines that hit me, and just general thoughts about something that eventually morph into a song. It’s a part of who I am, for sure.
"I'd rather do none of them, instead of doing any of them" said everyone with ADHD. Caffeine and Ritalin are cousins so keep up the Java.
That was my thought as well. I have ADHD, and that’s me on a daily basis. Lack of focus, overwhelmed easily, difficulty finishing projects.
It's so important to flex the ideas muscle and grow in your creativity
Thank you
Plot twist: he's writing ideas in 30 days
ARE YOU GREAT 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Spoilers, spoilers, spoilers 😂
Ha!
Omg I have found a kindred spirit with opening of this video!
