    Praia da Rocha was a great place to stay for 7 months, and we were so fortunate to have found such a great bargain with our accommodation!
    This was a special price due to the borders being closed for the second lockdown... here's the link to our video to see exactly what we got for €13 per night:

    We stayed in Praia da Rocha in the 90s and loved it. I can’t believe how much it’s been developed since then, I hardly recognize it. When we went they still used Escudos, it was way cheaper back then! As other comments mentioned, Portimao is around the corner almost. If you’re missing something you can always go there.

    Enjoyed watching this video. My wife and I dream of wintering in the Algarve when we retire. I keep hearing how the apartments there can be very cold in winter. Can you please tell me if you experienced that? Thank you and I'll check out your other Portugal videos. Cheers!

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Martin. I'm sure you will love wintering in the Algarve. So many chose to do so. You are correct that many of the apartments are designed for the summer weather and can feel quite cold on some winter days.
      Our apartment had an Aircon system which had a heater in and you can set the temperature. We used it a few times on a few January evenings to take the chill off, but not much as we heard electricity is quite expensive (Even though we weren't paying that, it was included). We were getting a great deal on the apartment and didn't want to take advantage and are not so keen on the dry air from Aircon. We're used to putting some extra clothes on and an extra blanket on the bed.

    Having visited the Algarve I think it is incredible. All the towns and resorts are so unspoilt the coast and beaches are spectacular and it never seems over crowded or loud even in summer. I much prefered it as a holiday to Spain or any med islands. There is a surprise or great photo around every corner and it is so relaxed. Always hire a car though as some of the best coves and areas are hidden away from the main resorts. I went in 2016 and plan to return this year Covid dependant.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому +2

      We agree, Charlie. Algarve has plenty to offer for everyone including so many beautiful, unspoiled stretches of coastline. We haven't experienced it in mid summer so can't compare really but enjoyed our time thoroughly there from November through to June. Good tip about having a car as some places are tricky to get to on public transport. So much to see and do. Best of luck with your forthcoming travel plans! 😁 ~ Lee

    What areas of Praia de Rocha/ Portimao would you recommend for finding a rental? We are planning for Jan-Mar 2022, and there are many choices but hard to get a feel for an area from maps. What do you think of the area around the marina and further north near the bridge to Ferragudo?

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому

      Hello KC! We stayed at Plaza Real up on the hill between Portimão and Praia da Rocha for 7 months, and didn't venture out at night, so can only judge by what we saw during the day. Most areas near the centre seem to be mainly high rise, and there are always barking dogs in those apartments! We're fairly cautious and wouldn't book anywhere for 3 months... we tend to stay 1-4 weeks and then extend if we like it. The marina would be closer for the beach and the area near the bridge is closer to restaurants and the centre of town. Let us know how you get on 😃😁 ~ Mandy

    • @KC-is9nx
      @KC-is9nx 2 роки тому +1

      @@FrugalTravellers Hmm, interesting approach. I see the positive of not committing in case one doesn't like it, but I would be concerned about not being able to extend and having to go house hunting again. I'm also seeing lower rates for longer term stays, so now I'm not sure what to do! This will be our longest trip to date; usually we are travelling for 3-4 weeks and not staying too long in one place, so I am a little out of my element for planning.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому

      @@KC-is9nx Totally understandable, but we're long term, slow travellers who, especially nowadays, tend not to book too far in advance just in case. If it was us, we'd read the reviews, (looking at properties with at least 10 reviews for a balanced idea), check out Google Earth and Trip Advisor for more info... and then go for the best value place possible 😃😁 We're looking at maybe booking at Studio 17 for 2 months, January and February, as Plaza Real is too expensive for us. We wouldn't book yet though as the prices tend to drop closer to the stay... but I'm guessing you might not be comfortable with that. The advantage there is that all bills are included! ~ Mandy

    Great video. How do find it as foreigners in the Algarve and in Portugal in general. Do you find the locals to be welcoming? Is there xenophobia?

      Hello Queen Bee. We found the locals to be friendly and helpful, and most people spoke English very well. ~ Mandy 😀😁

    Do you run into any problems crossing borders via bus. Since most eu countries are locked down. Or because you are transiting through the country and not staying the don’t have a problem?

      We were fortunate to cross into Portugal via France and Spain at the beginning of November when borders were still open. In theory, if FlixBus still has tickets for sale then the border should be open BUT as most European countries are now restricting entry to citizens and residents I'd assume non-citizens or non-EU citizens wouldn't be able to enter. They're the measures recently implemented by Portugal.
      We always check the Safe Communities Portugal website for up-to-date information, or join the Facebook groups of whichever country we're looking at, as they tend to have the most recent information. Good luck with your search.
