For those of you that aren't familiar with and field, The penultimate step is the second to last step prior to takeoff . It is something called the penultimate stride and sets the jumper up for a correr takeoff trajectory
This is an amazing video man. I'm 6ft and I been really awkward when it comes to jumping since Im overall new to basketball. I know I have the strength to get the ball up there(deep muscle mass, big bones) and I know I can jump high enough but I've never been able to figure out how to get up. Thank you very much.
Thank you for posting this. I play soccer, and Im 6'1, but I've been told my jump technique is lacking. Sure I am 38, but can always improve. The skill techniques are the same, so hope it helps. Plus my 13 year old stepson is 5'9/10, so gonna show this to him.
Elasticity in the legs and coordination seem to play a big role too along with strength. A good example is that the smaller man jumps as high as the taller guy with less effort.

Great video! I wouldn't exactly consider myself a basketball player but I can touch the rim when I jump without a ball. My footwork/technique is terrible though. How do you use your arms to project yourself upwards when you're actually holding the ball?
My problem is I stay too far back and I don't translate my speed well into my jump. There's no reason I should not be dunking without effort. I'm 5"8(in shoes) I can easily grab off vertical, and my drop step is 35-36 inches and the best I've gotten on a run (vert tech) is a 37 inch indoors but outside I jump alot higher.
@@HeadShoht I was able to dunk for two years before my Injury. I just didn't do it often , I think my standing vertical was about 30inches and run vertical was 35-37 inches when I was first able to dunk. After I cut this weight I should have about a 38inch standing vertical.
@@HeadShoht I tore my Achilles on right foot and broke toe on left foot but I'm finally healed from that now. Currently 187lbs or so in clothes post workout and my standing vertical is about 30-31 inches cutting to 160lbs while increasing all my lifts as I always do on my cuts.
@@MakaveliDior trampoline accident , was the day after leg day and I was on the bouncier trampolines at the park and was touching the ceiling and I was also wearing double socks and I think when I came down one of the socks slid and made it so my Achilles absorb the force at a awkward angle and that cause my big toe on the other foot to try to absorb the force so I either broke it or pulled a tendon or something of the short along with spraining both ankle at the same time. I didn't even know my Achilles was injured until I could apply any pressure on it a few days later and for a week or so I could walk at all and it took me over a month to walk again and that caused alot of I'm balances in my body due to affecting my gait when I had the crutches and than post that for several month when I had to walk with a limp. It's all good now though, it's not as reactive as it use to be and I'm still missing a good chunk of ankle mobility in the right achillies. Which I'm hoping to get back in the next 3-8 months. It's been 8 months since the accident. Currently 29 1/2-30 1/2 standing vertical and about a 35inch max vertical
Hey mn. I'm around 6"2 and I'm really light, coz I'm 14, so I'm sure my body is capible of getting higher. Imma continue plyometrics and training my technique and i will report back here.

Sitting down i go head to head with some 6ft guys. My inseam in pants is 26 inches. Adult sized pants in the smallest size tend to be 28 to 30 inches on the inseam. That being said. I can connect with what hes talking about when hes trying to describe the motion of jumping higher as all in one motion. I think this sort of thing comes easier to some people. But harder to those who are not as athletic. I couldnt jump high if you asked me to right then and there. But when youre in motion, playing hard, your body learns the movement that is going to have the least amount of resistance. With that durring a game i was always the one defending with headers. Jumping to the ball. When its done correctly you feel it. Your body just knows how to rubberband with muscle memory and technique. Its explosive force, but its not like youre trying to take off from the ground like a rocket. Its more like taking off from the ground like a jet on a runway. Good shit.
