Lyrics:
I know a girl who thinks of ghosts
She'll make you breakfast
She'll make you toast
But she don't use butter
And she don't use cheese
She don't use jelly
Or any of these
She uses Vaseline
Vaseline

And I know a guy who goes to shows
When he's at home and he blows his nose
He don't use tissues or his sleeve
He don't use napkins or any of these
He uses magazines
Magazines
Magazines

I know a girl who reminds me of Cher
(Reminds me of Cher)
She's always changing
(She's always changing)
The color of her hair
(Color of her hair)
But she don't use nothing
That you buy at the store
She likes her hair to be real orange
She uses tangerines

Who's still rocking this in 2024?
Right here!
Here !!!
Yup
yep, i love how dumb the lyrics are
Are you kidding, who isn’t!?!
This song rocks!!!
All of my brothers and I would yell-sing this every morning at the table. Best memories, best songs, all from the best band
The Lips haven't put out a bad record since 1983
Good band, the nineties were a great decade. you sang also songs of Dinosaur Junior?
In Lima Peru there was a radio station that played alternative rock songs from the nineties.1👍😎
I was 11 in 1980. And then I was 21 in 1990. 2 absolutely epic decades at the right age.

Wayne was 32 when this was written and they finally had a hit, your never to old to chase your dreams 61 now and still rocking.
Inspiring !
I dont understand how this song hasn't brought about world peace.
They did it with Do You Realize?? But people don’t realize. 🫃
❤ itttt
🤣🤣🤣
Man, the 90's had a load of cool, quirky and ultra creative songs like these. I miss hearing this kind of stuff! One of a kind era, for sure.
This is no longer allowed.,. Please get vaxcinated asap
The artists sold out. They used to not allow their music on ads, and now they’ll sell it to any company for anything…they think they’re GETTING MONEY but they’re chasing a dollar and shitting out their artistic integrity while the companies says “No I don’t like this Vaseline song, write something friendlier to my customers”
what about bladee
"Loser" set the tone. Though this might have been prior....not sure
Even video games felt different. Like they were trying new things. Movies were more original. Shit am I old?
My history teacher in 9th grade showed me this song.
Thank you Mr.Hart
What did he say about it?
These guys crashed at my house one night after a show in OKC, (a long time ago!) Great to see that they're still playing gigs!
Micah Mindemann wow 🥀
Wayne couldn't find his own house(s)?
@@timtonsley8823 Probably before he had his two houses and was on the road for a tour. Remember he worked at Long John Silvers for like 10 years while still making music
So lucky! Great memory to share :D
are you clean now?
You don't get any more 90s alternative than the Flaming Lips. Reliving my teenage youth with this good old ditty.
90s alternative? Dude they performed this song on Beverly Hills 90210,

Sonic Youth
They're your typical woke mob regressives. Couldn't be any less alternative than that.

My husband and I met in '93 and this was one of the first "out there" songs he introduced me to. I remember us walking around the neighborhood singing it. At least the Vaseline, Magazine, and Tangerine choruses. Good memories for us in our 23rd year together. Thanks for posting it FLs.

This is the heartwarming content we need in these trying times.
Couldn’t have said it better myself me and my wife also met and 93 but she never Understood song course I guess none of us. Really understand exactly what this song means

The years just crank on by so quickly
The most 90's feeling riff imo
Even though I was a little kid in 93, this song sounds nostalgic to me.
it's like they took all the colors of the rainbow and turned them into sound. I can't listen to their songs without feeling overwhelmed by a wave of emotions. So thankful to the guy who introduced me to Flaming Lips so I'm giving his band a shout out here - they're called The Doublejumps if you want to check them out. Peace
My old headphones are kinda busted and don't pick up all the audio channels, I think, so I can only hear Wayne for most of the song. There are these long, echoey passages with no instruments at all, just a slight reverberation in the vocals, and some static.
...Honestly, the song got even more trippy, and I love it.
I used to sing this song to my daughter krista when she was first born.it used to make her laugh.we lost her on nov.3 2018. I luv you krista. Cant wait to see you again some beautiful day
Sorry for your loss bother, may you be reunited on the other side.

Wow that was cool of your dad. My dad passed the same year but he barely knew who the Beatles were.
The potential for jokes, parodies and memes from this song is endless.
Great song. I haven't heard this song in at least 25 years. I didn't even know they made a music video for it. This was a VERY welcome stroll down Memory Lane. Thank you. 😊
Ain't seen no music
The early 90's tried to save us but we would not listen.
We did something wrong, listen to today's music
I had the Grammy's on last night and was literally saying to myself, "WHAT THE FK??????????"
Seriously though, 9/11 sorta ruined the party
@@creekandseminole It was burning out before that. The Market got overly flooded with weird bands, most were not any good, people got tired of the alternative sound and moved on. You can sometimes hear its influence even today but for the most part it went back underground.
@John Chrysostom Rev 3:9 Bible thumpers are funny :o
i have no idea how people hate on 90s grunge and alternative rock. It is my favorite genre of music.
‘cause they walked into a tv show
It's a miracle this song ever became popular. And I'm glad it did!
I never have called in to a radio station to play a song... EXCEPT when I was driving around in Tulsa, OK in 1997 and called the college station there to play this song.
Pure indie! The essence of the 90's! Along with grunge and punk rock. Just kids playing and having some fun, rarely pretentious or taking themselves serious.
people were laid back in the 90s, and the only pretentious people were the pop singers then, and even they weren't overly pretentious.
That riff, so 90s!
@@synthoelectro no we wern't laid back in the 90's ,,,you don't get what the past was about

This takes me back to the MTV 120 Minutes days of the mid 90's. Was a great era for indie, alternative groups.
Someone sang this song during our middle school talent show back in the early 2000's. I haven't heard it since then. Grateful to hear it again

So crazy to think back when this first came out. Was played pretty regularly on the radio and definitely seemed like a one hit wonder song. Man, these guys have produced so much good stuff since then...
Please be joking
First album released in 1986... they were already doing awesome stuff way before HTDITFH. 😍
can we just appreciate the Flaming Lips driving out into the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night just to film themselves walking with a handful of balloons?
Then again, this was all shot in Norman, Oklahoma (where they're from). The middle of nowhere is never very far away in OK. Even now, you wouldn't have to go far at all from the OU campus to find a place that looks like that. :D

Riff is sexy as hell!and that bass at the chorus is addictive as hell
This song always put me in a great mood. You can literally alter your day in a positive way just by putting this song on.
This song came on while I was driving to work the other day, and YES, I agree 100%…
I took 90's music for granted when I was a teenager. God damn it.
This shit makes me happy as fuck.
Agreed
I'm glad to read that everyone feels the way I do. Smiling ear to ear hearing this after so many years.
😢 haven’t heard this in forever
I like how Wayne looks behind him at Ronald when he does the harmonics during the last chorus or w/e. Ronald deserved more of the spotlight.
This song does not age. Timeless!

My teenage years were great, 80's - 90's.
THE HISTORY OF THE FLAMING LIPS: Every Flaming Lips fan should be super thankful for this song because had they not came out with it, they would have been dropped from their label. Even though "In a Preist Driven Ambulance" and "Hit to Death in the Future Head" were good albums, they produced no hits and sold virtually no albums. Warner Bros was on the verge of dropping them but then they came out with this (the album "Transmissions from the Satellite Heart". This was the hit (and album) that got them started and gave the executives at Warner Bros the power to be able to say "Told you so" to other labels while at the same time gave the Flaming Lips the ability and freedom to fuck around. This freedom was very important after the magnificent and highly underrated "Clouds Taste Metallic" only sold like 70,000 copies (WB was expecting 250k minimum after the success of Transmissions). This "fucking around" resulted in "Zaireeka" which we should also be grateful for because without Zaireeka there would be no "The Soft Bulletin" which not only stopped the label from dropping them once again, but "The Soft Bulletin" (their best album by far, no hands down) proved the band didn't need a guitarist, proved that heroin addicts can be great musicians even in the middle of their addictions, and proved that The Flaming Lips were a highly creative band capable of creating beautiful music as well as always willing to try something new. After the slightly disappointing "At War With The Mystics" (which was The Flaming Lips attempt to get some radio hits like this one), they once again tried something new and blew everyone's mind with "Embryonic". Embryonic is in some ways The Flaming Lips most complete and fine tuned album (it's like their Abbey Road). After Embryonic, the Flaming Lips couldn't get any more experimental, right? Nope, they created and even more experimental, hard-to-get-into album titled "The Terror". Which, at first might annoy some Flaming Lips fans, but trust me, give it a chance and you will realize THE TERRRRORRR. Thank you - T.J. Nieman

When weezer were recording Pinkerton they asked if they could make it sound like Clouds Taste Metallic. Midway through recording they hired Lips long-time producer Dave Fridmann to engineer half the album

Shady McVeigh well I'm 21 and know quite a few people my age and younger that love psychedelics, they're coming back for sure
+sammy boy yeah for real, i'm 26 and i've been first disappointed and then surprised and utterly delighted by the inroads being made into psychedelic medicine, largely in part due to interested and intelligent young folks giving these things a second chance... wish i could say the same for the flaming lips and the later stuff, but i'm here revisiting the good old days, back when this band really meant something to me. for all i know they really mean something to somebody now, i sure hope they do, that person just aint me anymore, but i will always adore their output from this era, clouds taste metallic, even going back to in a priest driven ambulance, abrasive as it is i've got a lotta love for that haha... not to mention this album, transmissions, which i bought on a whim at age 15 cus i really liked the cover, took home and listened to on a bottle of cough syrup which was the heaviest experience i had available in my small town at the time haha, and just melted in a warm puddle of revelation, dribbled over itself in hot cranial rivulets of awe and appreciation.... no album since the velvet underground's self titled had spoken to me so directly and yet in such an abstract way haha.. and then after clouds taste metallic there was the soft bulletin, zaireeka, yoshimi, even at war w the mystics and embryonic were pretty fucking great too tho i think they mark the end of the period where i could feel good about em anymore... but god damn man, yeah, for one thing, psychedelics are too good to ever be truly banned or ever fall truly out of favor, and for another thing, that's kind of like how good fucking music like this will never be erased or have its significance deleted by later versions of itself which see past the original value... the good things about the past will never be truly lost haha, whether they be acid or albums or whatever. tho as always, cheap imitations will muddy the market...
+Jack On

I remember them shooting the video all around the OU campus. Down in the cage (in the art school)getting film equipment and hearing this song being played(in the men’s room???). All local kids loved the Lips, but we never knew this song would go as far as it did. Just brings back warm happy humid memories of Norman and the Fred Jones Art Center.
Any idea where that dirt road was at? I guess it wouldn't be easy to narrow down as there seems to be several places around Norman where there's a dirt road with trees on one side and an open field on the other.
I think at one time I did know. Bradley B was shooting the video with Wayne and the boys. I was in the editing bay in the basement of the art school when they were shooting the video. They were talking about highway 9 somewhere I think as they grabbed lights for the shoot.

I heared this song about 15 years ago with friends. I thought it was ok. My father bought me tickets to go see The Flaming Lips in Dallas last night as anearly birthday present. Best live show I've been to in 11 years.
I was living in Seattle when this came out. Early 90s, grunge was cool, we were living life in a new scene, playing music, and it was everywhere. High every day, new music every day, new people every day,
To have been through that, there needs to be another breakthrough in music. It it more sterile now than before grunge.
I was in my late teens, early 20s when grunge hit. Such a variety of music then. Pop, techno, rap, metal, r&b, alt & country lol. There was something for everyone. I leaned to alt. Great times. I'm from OKC & a girl I worked with had lived next to Wayne Coyne. She always talked about how cool he was.
It's probably just the nostalgia. I lived through the 90s too. Yes there was a lot of good music but I would argue that there is still some decent music now. I think it's just harder to find because we aren't kids anymore. We got busy lives with shit to do. But my playlist has music from pretty much every decade from about the 50s until now thanks to UA-cam suggestions. Granted most of the time they don't suggest anything good but once in a while you come across a gem.
Same experience Jim Steele, except it was Athens Ga. I would love to have those days back...
Alot of people are making fun of this song, but I really like it. In a world where everything is just sexual and twists your mind, this song strikes me as pure for some reason. It's just simple. No political message, NBC isn't hating on it, and that loud/quiet/loud gives me chills when the distortion kicks in for the chorus.
