Lyrics:
I know a girl who thinks of ghosts
She'll make you breakfast
She'll make you toast
But she don't use butter
And she don't use cheese
She don't use jelly
Or any of these
She uses Vaseline
Vaseline

And I know a guy who goes to shows
When he's at home and he blows his nose
He don't use tissues or his sleeve
He don't use napkins or any of these
He uses magazines
Magazines

I know a girl who reminds me of Cher
(Reminds me of Cher)
She's always changing
(She's always changing)
The color of her hair
(Color of her hair)
But she don't use nothing
That you buy at the store
She likes her hair to be real orange
She uses tangerines

Wayne was 32 when this was written and they finally had a hit, your never to old to chase your dreams 61 now and still rocking.
Inspiring !
It's weird this song took so long to be popular. Long live the Lips!
No
Just saw them in Boston opening for Weezer. They played like 10 songs. Very good show.
@@thechief5670 jesus christ! He looks like a kid in the video, great genes, lol.
😢 haven’t heard this in forever

You don't get any more 90s alternative than the Flaming Lips. Reliving my teenage youth with this good old ditty.
90s alternative? Dude they performed this song on Beverly Hills 90210,
GTFO
Sonic Youth
They're your typical woke mob regressives. Couldn't be any less alternative than that.

I'm glad to read that everyone feels the way I do. Smiling ear to ear hearing this after so many years.
All of my brothers and I would yell-sing this every morning at the table. Best memories, best songs, all from the best band
The Lips haven't put out a bad record since 1983
Good band, the nineties were a great decade. you sang also songs of Dinosaur Junior?
In Lima Peru there was a radio station that played alternative rock songs from the nineties.1👍😎
My husband and I met in '93 and this was one of the first "out there" songs he introduced me to. I remember us walking around the neighborhood singing it. At least the Vaseline, Magazine, and Tangerine choruses. Good memories for us in our 23rd year together. Thanks for posting it FLs.
Lynn Hay happy 25 this year! Quarter of a century
Love this
This is the heartwarming content we need in these trying times.
Couldn’t have said it better myself me and my wife also met and 93 but she never Understood song course I guess none of us. Really understand exactly what this song means

The years just crank on by so quickly
It's a miracle this song ever became popular. And I'm glad it did!
The most 90's feeling riff imo
Even though I was a little kid in 93, this song sounds nostalgic to me.
it's like they took all the colors of the rainbow and turned them into sound. I can't listen to their songs without feeling overwhelmed by a wave of emotions. So thankful to the guy who introduced me to Flaming Lips so I'm giving his band a shout out here - they're called The Doublejumps if you want to check them out. Peace
The 90s didn't end til 2004. You lived and breathed it.
I was 11 in 1980. And then I was 21 in 1990. 2 absolutely epic decades at the right age.
man your were lucky me 89 and up just the 90s as a kid.you got the best of the 20th century.i envy you in a good way
@@davidwagner1144 90’s we’re not bad!!

@@jackstraw6760 he prob was 31
@@jackstraw6760 I’ll let you do the math.
Man, the 90's had a load of cool, quirky and ultra creative songs like these. I miss hearing this kind of stuff! One of a kind era, for sure.
This is no longer allowed.,. Please get vaxcinated asap
The artists sold out. They used to not allow their music on ads, and now they’ll sell it to any company for anything…they think they’re GETTING MONEY but they’re chasing a dollar and shitting out their artistic integrity while the companies says “No I don’t like this Vaseline song, write something friendlier to my customers”
what about bladee
"Loser" set the tone. Though this might have been prior....not sure
Even video games felt different. Like they were trying new things. Movies were more original. Shit am I old?
Sooo 90s!!! It was a different time then!!! So grateful I got to experience my 20s during this decade!!!
i have no idea how people hate on 90s grunge and alternative rock. It is my favorite genre of music.
‘cause they walked into a tv show
Some people are stupid and sadly, know nothing about music. Whatevs, their loss.
Haters are gonna hate . Ask them what their preference is?? They wont answer you because that would take a just little bit of nuts to reveal themselves and make them vulnerable to criticism also . Your weak . Grow some balls !! 🏈
So crazy to think back when this first came out. Was played pretty regularly on the radio and definitely seemed like a one hit wonder song. Man, these guys have produced so much good stuff since then...
Please be joking
First album released in 1986... they were already doing awesome stuff way before HTDITFH. 😍
I was at Penn State, undergrad, when this came out. Holy memories dude....
Someone sang this song during our middle school talent show back in the early 2000's. I haven't heard it since then. Grateful to hear it again
Hey you should check out a band called The Doublejumps if you like The Flaming Lips
@@funlittlefishtysm
This takes me back to the MTV 120 Minutes days of the mid 90's. Was a great era for indie, alternative groups.
I came to the lips late and am just going back over their early career. I prefer the later stuff, but the band have always been so original and creative that there is nothing bad, you just prefer one era over another. God bless them.
Great song. I haven't heard this song in at least 25 years. I didn't even know they made a music video for it. This was a VERY welcome stroll down Memory Lane. Thank you. 😊
Ain't seen no music
I dont understand how this song hasn't brought about world peace.
They did it with Do You Realize?? But people don’t realize. 🫃
❤ itttt
🤣🤣🤣
That is such a great comment! My 7 year old nephew loves Tangerines. They call them Halos. Thanks 4 being out there. I thought I was the only one that loves this song, lol 😇😎
My old headphones are kinda busted and don't pick up all the audio channels, I think, so I can only hear Wayne for most of the song. There are these long, echoey passages with no instruments at all, just a slight reverberation in the vocals, and some static.
...Honestly, the song got even more trippy, and I love it.
I like how Wayne looks behind him at Ronald when he does the harmonics during the last chorus or w/e. Ronald deserved more of the spotlight.
My husband and I saw them at a festival in Tulsa back in the 90s when they were doing this tour. Wayne looks like a kid to me now. Seeing them next month in Tulsa again. Some things you can't evolve past.
Hey you should check out a band called The Doublejumps if you like The Flaming Lips
I took 90's music for granted when I was a teenager. God damn it.
Who's still rocking this in 2025?
Me!
Yep 😊
Yo
Indeed.
One time when I was high, I discovered that Supreme Love can shine down through music. This was one of the songs that is in such alignment with the divine. It pours through the music. It still takes me there. ✨✨♥️✨✨
Thank you, I think so, too.
U get it !!!! Higher level!
These guys crashed at my house one night after a show in OKC, (a long time ago!) Great to see that they're still playing gigs!
Micah Mindemann wow 🥀
Wayne couldn't find his own house(s)?
@@timtonsley8823 Probably before he had his two houses and was on the road for a tour. Remember he worked at Long John Silvers for like 10 years while still making music
So lucky! Great memory to share :D
are you clean now?
This is one of those songs, I was so young when it came out that I had forgotten about it all these years (I wanna say I was like 10 or 11). But when I saw it pop up in my recommended, I thought "I vaguely remember that". And then I listen and it starts coming back to me. Great song! I really love how during each chorus, the thing that they "use", changes.
Live in OKC. Met Wayne several times. Coolest most down to earth guy you can imagine. The first time I met him I didn't even know who he was it was but he took time to just hang out and make small talk. What a cool dude.
My history teacher in 9th grade showed me this song.
Thank you Mr.Hart
What did he say about it?
He sounds like a chomo
Dude! Carrot Top is so multi-talented!!!
For some reason people are comparing ages around here. It doesn't matter when you were born. You are alive now and it is a fantastic weird 90's song. It was a weird decade, appreciate it.
I had no clue this was a Flaming Lips song.... Mind blowing
whod u think it was? the stones? foreigner? barry manilow? abba?
It's absolutely my favorite song of theirs.
i thought it was Ween for a long time.
Their best and one of the finest songs of the '90s. Those were the days.
Can we PLEASE go back to that GenX sweet spot and stay there forever? Please? These guys were some of my faves, & this song was EXACTLY what it was supposed to be. ❤
My Daddy passed in 2014, & he turned me onto this jam man! Fuckin killer, Everytime I think about I got this, thanks Pop!!
Rip David Alan Cain!🤘
Wow that was cool of your dad. My dad passed the same year but he barely knew who the Beatles were.
Riff is sexy as hell!and that bass at the chorus is addictive as hell
Seeing this live was a magical experience 🧡
The potential for jokes, parodies and memes from this song is endless.
I first heard this song when I was in my teens and visiting my aunt in southern California. I got such a bad sunburn that the pain wouldn't let me sleep, so I stayed up all night watching music videos (a real treat as my parents didn't want to pay for cable). This came on and it was so bizarre and I immediately fell in love with it. Took me years to find it again as it didn't get air time where I lived; I think it wasn't until the Internet developed to the point where you could find music on it - Napster maybe, or Kazaa? (Back in my day, if you wanted Internet your modem sounded like a robot dying, it took an hour to download a four-minute song, and that's the way we liked it, thank you very much!) And now with UA-cam, Pandora, Spotify and the like, we can instantly find any music we want any time.
A wild gem. Please give this one a 4K upgrade!
Pure indie! The essence of the 90's! Along with grunge and punk rock. Just kids playing and having some fun, rarely pretentious or taking themselves serious.
people were laid back in the 90s, and the only pretentious people were the pop singers then, and even they weren't overly pretentious.
That riff, so 90s!
@@synthoelectro no we wern't laid back in the 90's ,,,you don't get what the past was about
@@synthoelectroThere were a lot of pretentious scenesters. Trust me. But yeah, we certainly weren't as high strung as kids these days. Only phone I owned was connected to the damn wall.

Too good, Flaming Lips forever...
I've heard of these guys, but never actually listened to their music. Not because I thought they were bad or anything I just never bothered. Wasn't until I saw them in Minneapolis at the Weezer Voyage of the Blue Planet tour. Hearing them live was incredible, and the fun inflatables they brought out were so cool, and also being right next to a dude presumably in is early 50's late 40's go crazy for them brought up a lot of energy in me too. My friend and I became instant fans.
I used to sing this song to my daughter krista when she was first born.it used to make her laugh.we lost her on nov.3 2018. I luv you krista. Cant wait to see you again some beautiful day
Sorry for your loss bother, may you be reunited on the other side.

Bruh, can't imagine. Stay strong
A great rock song that will remain in music history probably forever more
Inner mind space exploration. Following Syd Barrett to upper levels. That's my take; watching decades later.🙂
This song does not age. Timeless!
I miss my brother, who passed in 2021 (RIP) and this was a song he loved.
As a 90s kid I have no idea how I missed this song growing up. I heard it a couple years ago while listening to Sirius XM during a free weekend and was like "what, how have I never heard this?!"
One of the first versions I heard of this song was Ben Folds Five.
I heard this fun and infectiously catchy song while inhaling my lunch at Five Guys' today - hadn't heard it in ages. I was presumably the only person there who recognized it.
I don't know why after like 20 yrs of not hearing it this song popped in my head this morning..
You were probably eating toast with Vaseline
It's my hair dye day!! So Im rockin this today! Woot!
Only the 90's could provide a platform for this, love it !!
Imagine not hearing this record again in nigh on 30 years and remembering just how cool it was! That be me then...
Omg 😲 I had a co worker play this song for me 3 years ago when I first moved to Texas and I only wish I was listening to this music 🎶 in the 90's. This is an all time favorite for me and this video is way cool man.
saw them for the first time at a weezer concert this year and i really like em now
i really liked them when this came out, i saw them with dinosaur jr and weezer too. weezer is strangely hip to the kids.
@ yeah dinosaur jr was super good too! my mom knew them so she was really excited that i saw them too.
@@TheMournfulGhost nice, your mom is a smart lady, lol. I had never heard dinosaur jr before i got the tickets. They were amazing. I may or may not have been minidosing and the spacey thrash-rock jazz they were putting out was mind blowing.

How about a fun song that is original and packed with good vibes! Crank it!!!

This band makes me cry....in a good way
I feel like this is the definition of hippie music.
Not that, that's a bad thing.
Heard this song when I was a kid back in the 90s. Never heard it again until today I finally found it lol
I myself use tangerines, they just can’t be beat. Way better than magazines.
