I was born in 1990 and never heard of Beck. I never really listened to the radio before 2003, so that explains it but I used to listen to Madonna and Spice Girls when I was 5-6 but I never came across Beck. I think I might have heard this song but I don't consciously remember "Loser" nor a guy named "Beck". It's kind of irritating people assuming everybody who doesn't know Beck HAS to be born in 1999. Maybe some of us jus don't listen to music that much? I started listening to music a lot in 2003 when I was 13, before I'd just listen to almost exclusively South Asian music
Justin Mevee You are a winner if you stop being hard on yourself. It's sometimes fun joking about being a loser, but if you really are, then change yourself. Become a winner. Stay positive.
@@koda4247 you can at least formulate a creative personal story relating to the lyrics with RHCP, this shit is all over the place. Great, but makes absolutely no sense and the singer even said he hates this song because it was supposed to be a b.s. thing that's actually his most acknowledged piece he's ever made. Meaning he accidently did something awesome but can't when he's taking the music seriously and trying to express himself. At absolute most depth, the meaning behind this song is the random words are expressing the worthless loser idea." Nothin matters, f*** it, burn down the trailer park and shave your face with some mace in the dark. I'm depressed and nothing matters." That's pretty much it.
@@wesleybastien5968 I mean you can relate to that feeling, and the feeling is that the world doesn't make sense, to it comes back full circle and *does* have meaning. Also, it has a *tons* of hidden meanings and metaphors. Beck is a genius, and geniuses tend to put down their most popular work like, all the time. It's hard to face the realization than the easiest thing you made is the most popular, and perhaps the best as well. "Ban all the music with the phony gas chamber Cause one's got a weasel, and the other's got a flag One's on the pole, shove the other in a bag" That's a formidable metaphor for the music industry if you take 2 seconds to really think about it. Also that's again his opinion, the idea that Beck "can't come close" to doing something amazing when he's taking himself seriously is insane, he had one of the greatest career ever lmao that is grotesque self-deprecation or your interpretation of it there is. I think that he wrote it when he *felt* like a loser, which is why he feels that this is not a good song, but it's a great song, because it conveys the feeling perfectly.
@@imjustbetterthanyou9477 You have the benefit of time travel my friend. When I saw this being nearly the age you are now, that's all there was. You have quite an amazing discography to sift through and most of it is excellent right up to present day -- though a lot of it borrows from earlier masters (but don't we all). Seems like you're into 90s music videos. So what are the favorites you've discovered so far?
A true legend! Both Bob and Rubin! Rubin is my hero, we can only imagine how he felt and what he went through. He didn't allow anyone to break him of his dignity and he eventually prevailed against racist America. Dylan put it out there so blunt and clear. Praise God for the good ppl that helped Rubin in his time of need. Don't let this song die! It definitely lives on in my heart n soul daily. Don't ever forget how easily this could be anyone of us. No matter what color we are or where we come from wete living brutal scary times. Cheers to all who are touched by this song.
Joe Knoedler No not at all. Just two guys had different chances in life and different circumstances which made one kill him self literally and one with you know a normal teenage and young adult rebelion nonchalence attitude.
"Sooooy un perdedor ... " being Spanish my native language i can't tell you how hard i tried to understand what he was saying there... when it first appeared on Mtv this sick song... then one day it hits me... it's just "I'm a Loser in Spanish!" I was trying to hear English words... i felt so dumb. It's almost 30 years ago now, unbelievable.
I have never been that mucho into Beck. When I started listening to music around age 11 he released Midnite Vultures, and I didn't quite get it. I have respect for Beck though and I'm glad he won. That being said, I have to disagree with a lot of people saying the state of music is shit nowadays. I think that's bullshit and people being trapped in nostalgia. Just in the last 10 years there has been a lot of great new artists of all genres like Jack White, Royal Blood, Haim, Chvrches, The 1975, Lorde, Black Keys, Justice, Kings of Leon, Bastille, Bloc Party, Chet Faker, etc. Don't be so bitter and don't lose yourself in nostalgia
Amanda Tessmer I said Jack White, not The White Stripes, referring to Jack's solo career and recent projects (Raconteurs and Dead Weather). About The Black Keys it's true, but they took a while to become relevant.
sempercompellis I do think music affects culture definitely, but in a different way. I think at the end of the day what matters in an artist is 2 things: 1) If the art is genuine and 2) if it connects with people. I think the main difference between this generation and older generations is that they don't discriminate between genres, they listen to everything mixed, as opposed to older generations where music defined who you were (a punk, a metalhead, etc), so this generation doesn't need the music they listen to to define them, and I think that's a good thing
I put “Soy un perdedor” as my yearbook quote because this song was my anthem during high school. After so many years, I’m surprised that I’m not feeling like a loser anymore. Glad I didn’t peak in high school lol
That's cool shhht right there. We might have graduated close to the same year. Right out of high school, I married the girl voted in the year book "Most likely to become a super model". (This was the early '90s, CIndy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymore true supermodels) Note: I'm a dweeby guy, just happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right set of skills in the moment.
Lil Bo Same here. After graduating college, I was too introvert to land a job in the world of extroverts so I honed my skills at home, worked indoors and basically made more than 10k a month. The others who made me feel like a “loser” in high school aren’t doing so good now. Definitely glad I didn’t peak in high school lmfao
Runon Fragment I know lol. But Album of the Year is considered one of the "big awards" I don't think he's gotten that before. This is real Grammy shine for everyone to see.
I swear to God I witnessed this convo earlier today: Bro 1: That's why they picked someone nobody has ever heard of for Album of the Year, cause they want to award real artists Bro 2: Hmm I think you have a point. Me: thinking to myself "I wish I had a gun"
Nothing creates a true total recall mental state than this song. Suddenly I'm 18 again, driving to my first after high school job. The local radio station played this every morning just after 6 a.m. along with Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam. Yep! It was 1993.
What bits I understand in the song is lyrical genius, I mean I don’t think theirs really “a story” he’s trying to tell with the lyrics but it all flows well and it’s put together perfectly, I was in 7th grade I think when this came out, absolute classic
I had a friend that once said that the line "And my time is a piece of wax falling on a termite that's chokin' on the splinters" was one of the most poetic things he'd ever heard, even though he didn't know what it meant. And I have to say that I agree with him
The 90s in America saw a lot of that. We didn't differentiate. Things had changed. Now, they have race baited us back to 1965 Sadly...the work of Gen X is stomped all over.
This song saved my life. It made me proud to be called a loser. It really saved my life, back in the '90's. It can save yours too. When someone calls you a loser, you just sing this song loudly. Beck made us losers feel okay about life. No one can put you down now. We rise above. So many quotes I still use "Things are gonna change, I can feel it." Laugh it off. The name loser can never get you down now. Crank it. LOVE YOU FOREVER for THIS, BECK!!!
I love being a loser sometimes like a true nobody there's a certain feeling like its like everyone thinks I do the weirdest stuff and ignores me usually and it just makes me feel like im the shit cuz they wanna avoid me so much lol stay lame my friends
I saw this guy in Santiago a couple of weeks ago. He absolutely killed it. I have never seen such a range of musical styles from a single artist. Rock, bluegrass, grunge, electronic, accoustic and god knows what. He's a deadset genius. His whole band was great.
***** how is that disrespectful? She's not an artist. She's has teams of people writing her lyrics, making her beats, editing, producing, mixing all she does is sing. I'm sorry but I don't consider someone who does nothing an artist
a lovely little song Beck made out of anger when he realized most only remember the chorus of a song so he made the song weird on purpose so people who sing to a chorus would sing how much of a loser they are
I remember when beck won album of the year a few years ago out of nowhere. Lots of people were pissed (because they’d never heard of him) but the dude absolutely deserved it
"Slacker my ass. I mean, I never had any slack. I was working a $4-an-hour job trying to stay alive. That slacker stuff is for people who have the time to be depressed about everything." -Beck
Baaaaaahahahaha!!! I started out working at $3.35/hr... When I made it to 4 bucks I thought I was on top of the world... Look how far we've come since back in the day... Never slack and keep dreaming big ❤❤❤
I started out at 1.60 an hour. But gas was 28 cents a gallon, and you could buy 5 gallons of gas for one hours pay. Today, one hour of working at minimum wage gets you only about two gallons or less or gas.
Rita Dougherty we havent come far.. the minimum wage is still shitty. In fact it might be worse because the value of the dollar keeps going down while cost of living is more expensive than it’s literally ever been... Boomers...clueless
In the 90s, a co-worker friend of mine and I were doing some work in Tracy, Ca and decided to travel to Reno, NV for the weekend. I had never been to a casino before but he told me to just double your bet each time you lose when playing roulette. Well, I ended up losing hundreds and so did he. To save money, we slept a few hours in the rental car in some parking lot. The next morning, very early, we walk back in to that casino determined to get our money back and this song was playing as background music. I'll never forget it, and no, we didn't get our money back. We were losers baby.
Dude , I lived and worked in Vegas Nv. Never gamble on weekends , they loosen the games up during the week. The weekends the house cleans up, Lol they probably piped that music in to subliminal screw ya'll . Theres tricks to winning , I knew all the loose slots and when to hit them, you gotta live there and see how...Of course once the house see's this you will get banned...

It’s crazy that you can have random lyrics to amazing instrumentals and it be a banger for decades
i feel that way about the rhcp but people may put a gun to my head so i stay quiet
And you gotta love that electric sitar! That's the best part!
@@koda4247 they do have lyrics that make sense
"Ban all the music with the phony gas chamber
Cause one's got a weasel, and the other's got a flag
One's on the pole, shove the other in a bag"
That's a formidable metaphor for the music industry if you take 2 seconds to really think about it.
Holy shit, I was 13 years old when I last saw this video, I am 40 now. It still feels like that same day. What a great song/video.

The White Stripes' first album was released in 1999, The Black Keys' in 2002.
I think the main difference between this generation and older generations is that they don't discriminate between genres, they listen to everything mixed, as opposed to older generations where music defined who you were (a punk, a metalhead, etc), so this generation doesn't need the music they listen to to define them, and I think that's a good thing
sempercompellis I hate country music and yet I still find exceptions to that statement. I love music. All of it. Peroid.
And alt-j lol

That's cool shhht right there. We might have graduated close to the same year. Right out of high school, I married the girl voted in the year book "Most likely to become a super model". (This was the early '90s, CIndy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymore true supermodels) Note: I'm a dweeby guy, just happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right set of skills in the moment.
Mid-80s = pretty much the same.

I dropped outta high school and I make 2k a week. While I’m technically still high school age I definitely didn’t peak in highschool
