That opening guitar riff is immortal.
Thought it was piano when I was younger
Wow! In 1 week it will be 30 years since its release!! That is insane. The song is just as good now. My, how much has happened in the world since then. Crazy. I was 13 when this track hit, just in the beginning of my prime teenage years. Oh god, here comes a wave of sweet, sickening nostalgia. Crazy.
Delta blues slide guitar riff ya"ll
Iconic
For me it was always the scitar sound that got me hooked.
LOSER turns 30 years TODAY! Thank you, Beck, for 3 decades of such great music!!!!!
Ha, right this moment was wander how old is this masterpiece.
Yep 1993. Probably the very year the 90s started to feel like it.
I turn 33. I don't like getting older, but I still think it's tragic that I was too young to know what a cool time I was living in. Would have been better to come of age back then than years later
@@clamchowder622 right?? I’m 35 myself. The 90s were so amazing and we took it all for granted!

My middle son Kevin was a HUGE Beck fan He’d wake me up to see Beck on Jay Leno He wanted everyone to find the joy he did in Beck songs. He left this life in 2001 at age 18. I still hear those 90’s Beck songs in my head especially today, he would have been 42 today. I hope he listens to Beck in heaven.!
That must've been really tough....your son sounded like a lovely fella, rest in peace and fly high for him 💜💜

Love your heart. I think he's where you so believe. ❤

Beck, your music still hasn’t been forgotten in 2024 ! Terminal cancer , disrespectful wife, shitshow life and this song and Mellow Gold is like a band aid on my chopped off legs. You legend. We will never forget the 90’s happiness you gave and still give us.
Stay up brother ✊🏼
Wishing you the best in all sincerity.
Smoke some DMT if you can
You're goddamn strong to make it all the way today
Keep going brother! Just know there will always be someone out there who loves you
The mid 90’s was just the best time to be young and dumb. This song is a testament of it’s awesomeness. 🤙🏽
I got inspired in being dumb back then, loved it

I'm pushing 60, and this is still one of my all-times-favorite tunes!
Same here, brother. I just turned 59 a few weeks ago. This song never fails to put me in a good mood.
My dad is 70 and absolutely loves this song. No offense, but I wonder why it's so popular with the much older crowd it was intended for?

If you're reading this, know that you are loved beyond measure.
When you get older, this becomes painfully fun to sing in your head, when you are in a situation.
@CrashDummy51you got this brotha you’re just building up those stories for the kids😂.
@CrashDummy51Damn, love you man, that's the mindset. Life's not about money, happiness or sex; it's about living an interesting life, about experiencing existance.
I came to this song with nostalgia in mind and I saw this comment. Your situation may not be the same, but I suffered with addiction for years and was homeless in Atlantic City, Allentown, Paterson, worst cities on the east coast. But I'm 27 now and THRIVING. You can do whatever you believe you can. You got this. And if your thing is music. Don't ever give up. Ever.@CrashDummy51
“He hung himself with a guitar string, slab of turkey neck and it’s hanging from a pigeon wing

Then when I’m an adult and actually sleeping on a love seat in a trailer park and listening to this song and realize I grew up to be a loser, and i just think to myself, “fuck”
The lyrics suddenly become way more relatable, lmao

This video always cracks me up. The bad breakdancing, the burning squeegee, the guy jumping on the bench. Sheer hilarity. It does capture the vibe of the early 90s, a time in which people were getting over the triumphalism of the 80s. Fits perfectly with the song.

Everyone gloats about being a 90's kid. You're not a fucking 90's kid if you don't know who Beck is. This song defined the 90's.
so you're supposed to be aware of songs that got popular when you were a literal baby or about to be born? Whoops sorry call the 90's police I didn't know who he was because I wasn't fucking born yet but that doesn't mean I'm not a 90's kid magically.
HystericSky if you brag about being a nineties baby but where a baby or too little to remember anything from the nineties, than no your not a nineties baby. Wait ten years when everyone becomes nostalgic of the 2000s and claim that decade.
alot of people confuse being a 90's baby for being a 90's kid. I was born in 88. I was what one can consider a 90's kid

@@koda4247 they do have lyrics that make sense
@@koda4247 you can at least formulate a creative personal story relating to the lyrics with RHCP, this shit is all over the place. Great, but makes absolutely no sense and the singer even said he hates this song because it was supposed to be a b.s. thing that's actually his most acknowledged piece he's ever made. Meaning he accidently did something awesome but can't when he's taking the music seriously and trying to express himself. At absolute most depth, the meaning behind this song is the random words are expressing the worthless loser idea." Nothin matters, f*** it, burn down the trailer park and shave your face with some mace in the dark. I'm depressed and nothing matters." That's pretty much it.
@@wesleybastien5968 I mean you can relate to that feeling, and the feeling is that the world doesn't make sense, to it comes back full circle and *does* have meaning. Also, it has a *tons* of hidden meanings and metaphors. Beck is a genius, and geniuses tend to put down their most popular work like, all the time. It's hard to face the realization than the easiest thing you made is the most popular, and perhaps the best as well.
"Ban all the music with the phony gas chamber
Cause one's got a weasel, and the other's got a flag
One's on the pole, shove the other in a bag"
That's a formidable metaphor for the music industry if you take 2 seconds to really think about it.
Also that's again his opinion, the idea that Beck "can't come close" to doing something amazing when he's taking himself seriously is insane, he had one of the greatest career ever lmao that is grotesque self-deprecation or your interpretation of it there is.
I think that he wrote it when he *felt* like a loser, which is why he feels that this is not a good song, but it's a great song, because it conveys the feeling perfectly.
Beck said he wrote down everything he dreamed for a year and then made a song of it all.

90's baby does not equal 90's kid. I can understand those born in the 90's not knowing who Beck is. I was born in 88 so I spent from 2 - 12 years old in the 90's and can be what one would consider a 90's kid. I remember when this music was playing on the radio non stop.
I had the benefit of being both an 80's and 90's kid.
Age 0-10 in the 80's
10-19 in the 90's
Dystopia1980 but but im 19 and i knew who beck was :(
I grew up listening to this on the radio, and I was born in 94. You don't have to be a "real 90s kid" to know who Beck is. Then again, all I ever listened to was alternative stations.
I was born in 1990 and never heard of Beck. I never really listened to the radio before 2003, so that explains it but I used to listen to Madonna and Spice Girls when I was 5-6 but I never came across Beck. I think I might have heard this song but I don't consciously remember "Loser" nor a guy named "Beck". It's kind of irritating people assuming everybody who doesn't know Beck HAS to be born in 1999. Maybe some of us jus don't listen to music that much? I started listening to music a lot in 2003 when I was 13, before I'd just listen to almost exclusively South Asian music

Same, saw a post on Reddit that mentioned a music video to this song and i was like “whaaat” so here i am lol
Dude same, I didn't know there was one 🤣
BRO SAME
"Slacker my ass. I mean, I never had any slack. I was working a $4-an-hour job trying to stay alive. That slacker stuff is for people who have the time to be depressed about everything." -Beck
Ahhh, yes, the $4-something/hour jobs... I remember those all too well. Sadly, we haven't progressed much in society, have we... :/
Baaaaaahahahaha!!! I started out working at $3.35/hr... When I made it to 4 bucks I thought I was on top of the world... Look how far we've come since back in the day... Never slack and keep dreaming big ❤❤❤
I started out at 1.60 an hour. But gas was 28 cents a gallon, and you could buy 5 gallons of gas for one hours pay. Today, one hour of working at minimum wage gets you only about two gallons or less or gas.
How has no slack helped you in life?
Rita Dougherty we havent come far.. the minimum wage is still shitty. In fact it might be worse because the value of the dollar keeps going down while cost of living is more expensive than it’s literally ever been...
Boomers...clueless
I'm a driver, I'm a winner. Things are gonna change, I can feel it.
Me and my dad quote this line all the time.
Same man
I find if that one doesn't work then "kill the headlights and put it in neutral" does!
😂
Aye
same dude!!
If you've been rocking this one for decades raise your hand please 🖐️👍✌️

I keep hearing new things in it even after all this time
He looks like that average chill high school guy that you talked to once in a while.

Never forget, people, that Beck thought that "Loser" was not good at all and during a long period he was a homeless artist... So, believe in Yourself and follow your dream, because nobody is a loser! ;)
Im a loser
You might rethink that opinion if you ever head over to tumblr
Ok. Thanks for the advice.
He was a homeless musician beause he chose this way. If being homeless becomes unbearable, he gotta leave this life and go get a job anywhere to rebuild some average life. He bet he won. And that's great for him.
@@soufienkhalfaoui7593 He didn't have much of a choice at first, he really didn't believe in himself. Beck is just one example, there are a million more. Not just in the music industry. How many young people have heard themselves say to themselves: "You suck at school, you will not get anything ... You're a real loser.. etc." Many have become what they wanted to be and without anyone's help. There are millions of examples. But no one will say it will be easy. Cheers.
That was better breakdancing than Raygun at the Olympics 2024 at the 2:26 mark. For those who don't know, that is the Dancing Outlaw Jesco White at the 2:38 mark.
He looks about 17 here. This song was a pretty big deal my senior year of high school. Still holds up.
+Micah Newman im pretty sure he was in his 20s actually
+Micah Newman ur old
+Micah Newman I believe he was 23, that's still a hell of an age to have a hit like this.
+Krray steve winwood wrote and sung gimme some lovin while part of the spencer davis group when he was only 18 years old during the 60's
+Adieu He is 23 in this video
This and Creep by Radiohead are my go-to self-loathing 90's songs.
I see u around these 90s classics alot
And maybe. ...zombie?
+Daniel Plainview Highly agree, I'd include Nirvana's Dumb on that list as well.
+Daniel Plainview No Garbage or Smashing pumpkins?
+Daniel Plainview Fuck that, laid heaps.
I remember when beck won album of the year a few years ago out of nowhere. Lots of people were pissed (because they’d never heard of him) but the dude absolutely deserved it
Was that the year Ye pranked everyone when he was about to pull a 2009 but shaked his finger
@@calebthemusicjunkie yep
He deserved it, but definitely not for that album. Beyoncé should have gotten it
@@Weru212 who?
Beck, the prophet and King of the US slacker culture; absolute privilege of a society of extremes: Hyperbillionaires and abject poverty - Helipads vs. slums, often coexisting in the same city, in a surplus society where indulging in indolent apathy even as part of social criticism is the privilege of suburban kids, and it takes money 🤑. I like Beck's music, particularly this song.
I sang this song to my teenage daughter and she was looking at me wondering if this song was real. I sent her the link and she was laughing and showed her friends. Apparently they liked it 🤘
Good job on your part dad! Its great that they can enjoy older stuff.
Yo u making me feel old I was 11 when this came out
That’s becks lyrics for ya. Also his funkiest/funniest stuff is probably on Midnite Vultures, so u should show them that album too.
My guy, you remember if this in the Skater games on the N64? I should turn mine on and check. Old enough to get the tail end of the nineties, young enough to not have kids \m/
Rock on dude!
Hey some teenagers like old songs. I'm 13 and listen to this song.
I'm 45 and I'm still a loser! Don't know whether to laugh or cry.
+john smith Laugh then learn. Meaning laugh at being a loser. Then learn how to stop being a loser.
+john smith I am 48 LOL
+Michael McNamara Who are the WINNERS?
Justin Mevee You are a winner if you stop being hard on yourself. It's sometimes fun joking about being a loser, but if you really are, then change yourself. Become a winner. Stay positive.
I hear you !
My time is a piece of wax fallin on a termite, who’s chokin on the splinters
Don’t know what it means but I still think about it at least once a week
It's worth pondering about. Just as the rest of the song. What stroke me most on this album however was "she can talk to squirrels".
Was reading your comment as the words were being played. I'm easily amused :)
It's about time passing... and going nowhere
Me to I always honk of that and get crazy with the cheese whizz it just pops into my head all the time
Im not sure about the first half of the excerpt, but i understand the termite part. They eat wood, so when a termite is choking on (wood) splinters, hes a bad termite. A loser, if you will
At 2:58 he does the bugs bunny dance…..soulful
Fun fact: the blurry helmet Beck takes off at the beginning is a Storm Trooper helmet.
Epic
Had to blur it so george lucas wouldn’t sue him
I came to the comments just to see why it was blurred out, thanks!
Why did the blur the Helmut ?
@@tbas1972 To avoid a lawsuit from Lucasarts.
This is a one-song-musical-genre, there could be no sequel, no sophomore effort, it is a sonic culdesac.
The whole album is full of them!
In other words, PERFECTION. I agree.
Odelay was amazing. Very different from the folky mellow gold
I can't even like that
sonic culdesac! - perfect term
As a beck fan from birth, no. This song is not overrated.
No it is not 👊😎
Damn I don’t even remember what I liked as a baby. You’re hella edgy and hardcore!
@@YoungDeathWish I’m still a kid, so it wasn’t that long ago 😳
It really isn't I hadn't heard it till yesterday so I count that not overated.
@@shanelle-rae3309 boy.
This song was his first really popular song. And started the basis of his career. It was extremely popular when it came out, and people didn’t really like his other music. So yeah, a LOT of people think this song is overrated
2124 anyone loser?
Everyday it comes on one of my Playlist
Yup, born as one, living as one will probably die as one.
Forever hear listening it’s 🔥
2124.. I'll be 150 years old...and still listening to this shit!😂
Hell yea
Depression was so much better then it had music like this to relate too and it felt like you had a group of friends and people to relate too
The parasocial relationship, the perfect substitute for love, family and friendship
Yeah and the drugs were better then too.
THIS GUY BEAT BEYONCE WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE
+eatanentireass he deserved it lmao
+eatanentireass HELL YEAH!, he's awesome
Yup he deserves it because he actually writes his own music
that's because Beyonce isn't an artist, she's an entertainer. there's a big difference
***** how is that disrespectful? She's not an artist. She's has teams of people writing her lyrics, making her beats, editing, producing, mixing all she does is sing. I'm sorry but I don't consider someone who does nothing an artist
I miss this type of music. 😢
Aka the good music.
now it's all pop shit musics
Thank god for youtube then, and other stuff but mostly youtube!

That sitar actually adds so much to the song, george harrison wouldve been proud of that
Where do you hear a sitar? I don't think I've ever noticed that in this song.
@@FletcherWilbury you hear the dun dun dun dun dun done sorta slide guitar sound but then also a twang twang twangy wtang high pitched sound joins in... That's a sitar :)

Beck is Kurt Cobain if he had a good childhood and a fine teenage years.
Ok epic

So

When I first saw this clip on MTV when it was released, I was sure it was another Nirvana song :D
