I was 11 when this song was popular. You can't imagine how EVERYWHERE Olivia Newton John was back then. She was truly one of the huge stars of that era.
This is the definite and ubiquitous ONJ "anthem". It was the pinnacle of the early 80s soft rock genre. She also performed a little-known song, Dancin', with The Tubes as well Xanadu with the Electric Light Orchestra from the movie soundtrack.
I have had an extremely hard life. Out of all the things I can remember of the bits and pieces of my childhood this song sticks on my head as fresh as the first day I heard it. I was eight years old and I believed I was totally in love with Olivia. Not everything about my childhood sucked and there was some magic. I wonder if women can still feel the same magic in their men anymore? I want to be the hero for the fantasy in my mind. We're all so naive but without our dreams we wilt away.
lol 1:07 and 1:40 back in the day when you could smoke where ever and when ever you wanted and no one thought anything of it. Magic song, Magic woman, Magic era !!!
Man, This song is so powerfully alluring and enchanting. It's like she's singing it to you personally. Even after all these years, I never get tired of hearing it. What a beautiful voice, John Farrar couldn't have picked a better person to sing this. I'd have to add she looks so Hot in the other 2 videos of this song. She's got it going on....Whew I gotta hear it again now.
Mary Ellen i would not change anything about what happened to us how we were ripped appart and forced to live our lives withhout each other. The lonley nights when this song came on i can still feel the rip the scar on my heart. I close my eyes and listen can doug or ashley give you what we had? Or cindy for that fact we were young but this song is one of many that Brings my dreams alive for me.
On this day in 1982 {February 8th} Olivia Newton-John performed "Magic" on her own ABC-TV special 'Let's Get Physical'... Two years earlier May 18th, 1980 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #74; and on July 27th it peaked at #1 {for 4 weeks} and spent 23 weeks on the Top 100 {and for 9 of those 23 weeks it was on the Top 10}... And on July 13th, 1980 it reached #1 {for 5 weeks} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks... In Canada it peaked at #1 on the RPM Top Singles and RPM Adult Contemporary charts... It was composed by John Farrar; who also wrote her #1 records "Have You Never Been Mellow" and "Hopelessly Devoted To You" {plus penned her duet record with John Travolta, "You're The One That I Love", it also peaked at #1}...
I will always remember the Summer of 1980 when XANADU was released in theaters. This was the very first single and 45 lp that came out. This song was released before the film debuted. Listening to the music only allowed me to use my imagination as to what the film had to offer! Thank you Universal Studios!!!
Spent 3 or 4 weeks at #1 on the HOT 100 in the summer of 1980. It's one of those songs where when you first hear it, you know i's going to be a #1 song.
Such a beautiful, beautiful song! It takes me on a dream-trip back to childhood, when all was so pure and simple still. What a Magic indeed :) - Thanks for sharing this video here.
What A Babe, and what Great music she sang in the 70's and 80's ! This song always reminds me of the road from Sacramento to Reno while travelling back and forth on a job site. We always heard this song
This is one of the Good Music of the eighties when the musical industry producing best and real sounds. Good and Real Music begun in early 70's and died in the late 90's.... I Wish I could turn back the time..
Thanks for song... this song makes me a little sad because it reminds me of the past and I wish so bad I was back there.... but at least I can look back fondly.
WOW this song. Was such a huge hit. My favorite song of hers. I’m pretty sure I’m gay because of Olivia Newton John. I lost an entire summer to her and that damn Grease album. Played it all day, every day.
Her singing this song on the Midnight Special (black or white cozzie take ur pick) is just as heavenly as this one. Showed this to my 18 year old neice (who loves Beyonce, Rihaana etc..) She's already downloaded this video onto to her hard drive and now is watching other Olivia videos. Never too late .
"Magic" Writer(s): Ann Wilson, Gary Webb, Pam Sheyne, Nancy Wils Come take my hand You should know me I've always been in your mind You know that I'll be kind I'll be guiding you Building your dream Has to start now There's no other road to take You won't make a mistake I'll be guiding you You have to believe we are magic Nothin' can stand in our way You have to believe we are magic Don't let your aim ever stray And if all your hopes survive Your destiny will arrive I'll bring all your dreams alive For you From where I stand You are home free The planets align so rare There's promise in the air And I'm guiding you Through every turn I'll be near you I'll come anytime you call I'll catch you when you fall I'll be guiding you You have to believe we are magic Nothin' can stand in our way You have to believe we are magic Don't let your aim ever stray And if all your hopes survive Your destiny will arrive I'll bring all your dreams alive For you
I'm 16 and in all honesty, she is my favourite singer. I hate the crap they play on the radio now a-days. I was born in the wrong generation, I truly believe that.
Before Lady Gaga, Before J Lo, before Britney Spears, before Madonna, there was Olivia. Smooth and rocking. Sex appeal without coming on like a slut. Still one of the best female pop singers of the 20th century.
@@jeremyalexander9761 Thank you, Jeremy. You saved me having to type that up. I love Olivia but as you pointed out, that's not cause to insult other artists.
She is undoubtedly the sweetest, sexiest, and most talented pop star of the last 40 years. No one in my lifetime has ever come close. She is everythinguwanted.
This is my third comment or so on this post. In spite of all the negative stuff that has been written here, I will repeat: ONJ rocks! She was a truly class act, an icon of the '70's, and this song culminated all of her pieces of that era. Nobody nowadays can hold a candle to her...
Xanadu is not a movie, it is a documentary about how Olivia Newton-John came down from Heaven (wearing roller skates) and enlightened the entire world with her...self, her singing, and her beauty. Thank you Olivia.
Why does such talent and beauty not exist any longer. So so sad. Todays vocalists have not the compassion as this Olivia portrays in this song. I really miss the yesterday when I look at today.
I read about her decades long battle with cancer recently and she's really faced it with incredible bravery and dignity. When I think of today's female singers (June 2020) like Billie Eilish, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, they seem more like immature, attention craving children who have to rely on outrageous wardrobes, expensive videos, publicity machine melodramas to keep a fickle young record hooked - - - when all anyone like Olivia needed was her voice.
This is a good song to listen to whenever I'm feeling bad. ONJ is an absolute genius. With brains, beauty, talent, and a sweet loving personality, what guy wouldn't want this lady and what woman would want to be this lady? She is my role model.
Olivia Newton John looks like magic She has this look in her eyes as if to say follow me... I rem when I was young reading that she didn't graduate from high school .. Her voice is natural and her smiles electric She was able to captivate audiences always. When she says destiny wil arriiiiiiiiiiiiivvvvve (it's magic) This is some beautiful lyrics and music guys I tell ya
No auto-tune, no looping, no drum machines, no sequencers. Just raw talent, great songwriting and flawless performance. Say what you want about the 70's and 80's, but at least there were great musicians. There aren't many like ONJ in today's crop of so-called "stars". I think kids know it too...look at all the great performers still touring in their 60's to sold-out crowds....

you are so right dude!!! Life was so much better and simpler in the 70s even though i grew up in the 80s ... i love and dreamn of the 70s.

Songs like this takes you back to wonder times in your past and become classics. Songs today, you only wish they hurry up and die and quick death. thank God for the great music of yesteryear and Olivia Newton John

As a dedicated Smothers Brothers viewer I clearly remember ONJ's American TV debut on the Smothers Brothers TV show. With her looks (at perhaps around 20 years old), and her voice, I KNEW THEN she was going to be "REALLY big", as Ed would say. Just because you're young doesn't mean you were "born in the wrong generation". There was crap back when I was growing up (1970's) just like there is crap now. There is plenty of great music coming out now but maybe it's a little harder to find than it was back in my day. Thokozile Xaba I agree
It brings back the memory of the yesteryears in 1981.

A very uplifting song lyrically and especially with an angel singing it ...

To all you Carolina Hurricanes fans (like myself): This was the #1 song in the USA when Bryan Allen came into the world (August 21, 1980).

She's flawless, amazingly beautiful in looks and voice, I've loved her music since I was a kid
This song takes me back to 5th grade. Good, innocent times.
Her eyes kept me completely mesmerized throughout the entire song. Just beauty.
Wood for Haiti. It is Magic . You don't have to believe it is magic . You can know it is magic.
Get on the train of change. This is a great song
I used to play this over and over when I was 9. :)
Good God what a gorgeous woman, and she also has class to boot. That's a rare combination to find these days.

Writer(s): Ann Wilson, Gary Webb, Pam Sheyne, Nancy Wils
Come take my hand
You should know me
I've always been in your mind
You know that I'll be kind
I'll be guiding you
Building your dream
Has to start now
There's no other road to take
You won't make a mistake
I'll be guiding you
You have to believe we are magic
Nothin' can stand in our way
You have to believe we are magic
Don't let your aim ever stray
And if all your hopes survive
Your destiny will arrive
I'll bring all your dreams alive
For you
From where I stand
You are home free
The planets align so rare
There's promise in the air
And I'm guiding you
Through every turn I'll be near you
I'll come anytime you call
I'll catch you when you fall
I'll be guiding you
You have to believe we are magic
Nothin' can stand in our way
You have to believe we are magic
Don't let your aim ever stray
And if all your hopes survive
Your destiny will arrive
I'll bring all your dreams alive
For you
