Literally everyone I've run into who knows of them or has seen them says the same "damn they should have been bigger."
I saw them in 2009 and Eric has that thing that you see in all the greatest frontmen, but can’t fully articulate. Definitely was shocked that they didn’t get significantly bigger than they were, but that show was still the best show I’ve ever been to.
I agree, they are criminally underrated. Less than 100k monthly listeners on Spotify?! Yet they were played during the Superbowl, blows my mind.
Meeting another Foxy Shazam fan in the wild creates instant friends tho 😂
@@DopestDopeIEverSmokt I have yet for that to happen lol
What a great video. Foxy will forever be one of the most underrated bands. I saw them touring The Flamingo Trigger opening for a band called Beneath The Sky. I had never seen a live show like that before and haven’t since unless it’s seeing Foxy again.
Saw them live a decade ago: got to hold Sky's knee while he crowdsurfed with his keyboard, and helped pull Eric on top of the stagefront amps, so that he could collect cigarettes from the crowd to light and eat. Eric definitely struggles, live, to hit the same crisp vocal lines that you hear on the albums, but the show was one I'll never forget! Foxy's self-titled album is one of my all-time favorites.

Just seen them new year eve. Best show Ive ever been to.
I hope to see them in the future, even if Eric isn’t eating cigarettes any more 😂
@@EternallyUncoolTrevor he actually did that night. I have a video of it. damn wish i wasn’t late on that one lol
I got into them after becoming a huge fan of The Darkness and finding out Justin Hawkins produced their album The Church of Rock and Roll. I'd kill to see those two bands on the same bill!
I think one key part of their "rise and fall" story that you missed was the fallout after "The Church of Rock n Roll". Their shift in sound with Gonzo and the return to releasing music independently wasn't just a stylistic choice. "Church" was supposed to be their big breakthrough...and it just failed to sell (some blame the lack of marketing). The band has never spoken publicly about this all too much, but I think they just could no longer see a superstar future with the major labels so they decided to go back to doing what they had done before.
It's a real tragedy because they're a band that deserved to be on EVERYONE's radar.
Regardless, awesome video about one of my favorite bands! Saw them live once again a few years ago and they sounded amazing! Looks like they're finally starting up the tour bus again too, so I'm hoping to catch them soon!
@@nicksterwixter yeah I never see any Gonzo love. It’s actually pretty decent
Been fan of Foxy Shazam for last 5 years now.
I was super exited when they reunited.
Gonzo fan here, though it’s definitely missing some of the bombast that makes foxy special, but the lyrical content more than makes up for it. The album has so much depth to it !
@@Cosmicillustrator it’s pretty good. It’s definitely different from their earlier work. But it’s not bad, just different.
Love Foxy Shazam!!
Their first album was so good. I used to love all their stuff throughout high school but man flamingo trigger was next level post hardcore.
Their style and changes kind of remind me of the career of Portugal. The Man
They were definitely underrated as an experimental post-hardcore band! I’d love to see them revisit that sound
they deserve better. but so glad theyre still together making music
@@KingSkeletor their newest song is great
I have a photographer friend that went to school in Chicago and was friends with the boys because they played there *all the time*. They BLEW MY MIND. Being a huge Tub Ring fan, when they went on tour together I dug in deep to their music. I was addicted. So happy they're back together again.
@@ItsMykro I’ve been meaning to listen to Tub Ring. I see that name a lot but I don’t think I’ve ever checked them out. Are they anything like Foxy?
@@EternallyUncoolTrevor They're definitely in the same wheelhouse as Foxy and Mindless Self Indulgence, I would say. Quirky & fun rock. 95% of Tub Ring's music revolves around science. Bite the wax tadpole, Invalid, Promise Keeper. Those 3 should give you a good mix
@@EternallyUncoolTrevor Also, the keyboardist Rob is a grammy nominated pop producer now. He's produced Beyonce, Sia, and Cee low. Worked with Quincy Jones.. The man is a music genius and his keys can tell that story
@@ItsMykro I checked them out and I can definitely see myself getting into them
Love Foxy. Heard about them from a Nikki Sixx tweet in 2011 and then surprisingly later that year saw them open for The Darkness.
Buenas. Saludos.
I was listening to the first album on the way home from a busy day at work today. It was too much! I had to change to Dark Blue Night.. And I love Gonzo, very much indeed.
I got into foxy Shazam by seeing them open for weezer . Also how I got into fun . Before the hit we are young . Anyway I saw them live 2 more times after that . Opening for slash from guns and rosses and then on their own tour and I always thought they should be more famous and thought unstoppable should have been a big hit !!!!!!
Great video, i grew up around Cincinatti and got to see this band many times in the 2000s. I will always think fondly of those shows.
Video required. Congratulations on the work.
I've described Foxy Shazam as "the best band you've never heard of." Maybe it's because I'm from Cincinnati too, so the hype was even bigger for me, but I don't understand why they're not one of the rock n roll greats. Plus they're all really rad dudes. I think Church of Rock and Roll is a genuinely perfect album.
@@arininquotes8396 Eric Nally is one of the greatest vocalists AND frontmen of all time
@@EternallyUncoolTrevor Couldn't agree more!
Because rock n roll isn’t as popular as it used to be.
Unfortunately, it just doesn’t sell like it used to.
For me it began with that little show called Tower Prep
@@mansome_6282 I always saw commercials, but never watched the show
@@EternallyUncoolTrevor it was really good. Written by the co creator (story) of Batman the Animated Series. He’s one of the best comics writers elevating the material to more than the intended audience.
@@mansome_6282 no way! I didn’t know that. Might have to check it out if it’s available anywhere
Didn't know about them. Went to see the Darkness and was floored about how f*ing good the opening band was. Never happened before or since. Felt sad when their set was over. Wish I'd gotten some of their merch that night. I bought The Church of R&R album and hands down it's one of my all time favorite albums to date now.
I learned though that there is an upper-echelon of "true" Foxy fans that prefer albums like Flamingo Trigger and I wasn't part of that gang. That's cool with me. I hate to say it but I liked Gonzo. It takes a few listens but the songs are good. I regret missing the Gonzo show :(
@@noelstaar Gonzo isn’t a bad album, but nowhere near as good as Church of Rock and Roll or their self titled
@@EternallyUncoolTrevor good post. Thanks for posting!
YESSSS! Foxy never get all the praise they deserve. Consider me subbed!
Thank you!
I knew Foxy Shazam back when I was 10 years old and I saw the crazy
"The French Passion of Animality Opera" music video. They were the reason my cousin and I started a rock band with the same energy. That seems like years ago now. I'm 27 now and this band has always been an influential part of my musical life. I met all of them and almost went on tour with them. They are some of the nicest people I had ever met. My band covered all of their songs and we always tried to let people know who they were at school. They really deserve a bigger audience. But, Covid struck and most young people these days would rather listen to rap and hip hop which is why I think Foxy Shazam has not had the breakthrough they deserve. I will admit that their new music is not as good as it used to be. But, they still have talent that deserves as much attention as a band like Queen. Foxy Shazam will always have a place in my heart as the most underrated and most fun rock band of all time. I have a feeling that Rock and Roll is slowing starting to trend again. Let's see!
Of note:
1) The song “I Like It” was based on a contest that the band had where the picture they got the most likes would be the base of their next singe, and the picture that got the most likes was a picture of a back porn star’s… well, you get it.
2) I think the song Killing It is worth mention, as it is their biggest song that that didn’t have any help from radio, having more plays on Spotify than both I Like It and Unstoppable.
3) The band’s antics on stage includes Sky putting his keyboard on top of the crowd and playing from there, Daisy would balance his bass on 1 finger, and so on. They ALL would be considered a frontman in any other situation!
@@cheapmagic5898 I would’ve loved to put all these facts in the video but it would’ve been feature length lol.
@@EternallyUncoolTrevor I figured, I just wanted to throw some of that out there!
Great band, great stories!
@@cheapmagic5898 underrated as hell
I first saw them and heard of them in 2008. They played with Finch. Incredible show. Bought the album at the merch table.
Finch and Foxy sounds like a hell of a show
Eric has recently confirmed that the story about the "Foxy Shazam" name was totally made up. Had nothing to do with high school sayings.
I saw that while doing my research and I even put it in my script and filmed up, but for whatever reason I cut it out. It felt clunky. But yeah, the cool shoes thing was a total lie haha.
The simple truth is that they just never wrote a single that broke through - something that got past the kitsch and the bombast with enough focus. That's NOT a criticism at all - some great bands just can't write a single that catches on. It doesn't mean they're not fantastic.
I actually LOVE Gonzo. It’s my favorite album of theirs.
@@looseleaves370 it’s good!
In 2007 and 2008 I was in contact with their publisher and I got to play their music on my live 365 ice cast radio. Dedicated to world of Warcraft 😂 I'm glad people still talk about these guys. I still follow him on Instagram and listen to what they put out.
That’s an awesome story lol
Dang these dudes used to have me grooving thanks for the reminder
They’re so underrated, more people need to hear them
They are a nice cross between Sparks and queen.
I have been an evangelist of this band. I make everyone I know listen to them at least once.
@@dunstonlion1342 as you should
church was one of the best albums they had released, IMO. I like the direction they went with. It was a fresh new spin on older gene, that had the potential to put rock back in the the mainstream. I thought for sure it was gonna be the album to save Rock as we now it. It seems wrong that it was terribly underrated .
foxy shazam- dont shoot
Long live The Flamingo Trigger!!!
I love their music but is a shame they only perform their cover of Nirvanas “ drain you” only 1 time live and there is no video footage of that performance , and in many of their live shows they never performed it live again I consider “drain you “ one of the best songs by Nirvana but Foxy Shazam made “drain you” their own and even better than the original in my opinion
foxy shazam in my opinion became more of a theatrical glam rock like meatloaf and queen had a baby named foxy shazam i loved this group
@@micheleford4282 oh yeah I definitely agree

1. I admit I am not a huge Foxy Shazam fan (due to an experience at one Foxy Shazam's very first shows), but they have done a few songs since I don't mind.
2. Fair video, but I think you made it seem more like the 'Eric Nally' show then you should give him credit for. Also, there is a lot more to the band's then just Eric. In fact, the band almost kicked him out unless he shaped up (related to above story).
3. The break was a little more complicated at the time.
Fair point on the second one. I do feel like Eric is the brains behind the band, but the other members are definitely integral. Schuyler White is an insanely talented and energetic keyboardist, and Alex Nauth’s backing vocals and trumpet was a great addition. I just couldn’t find much info on either of them. And I wasn’t sure anyone wanted a LOOONG Foxy video haha. This one was a bit of a Hail Mary. But I appreciate the comment. Constructive criticism is always welcomed.

@@EternallyUncoolTrevor great video. My college years were spent hanging out with friends in a band called Look Afraid. Alex Nauth was their front man. Great rock music.
