    Enjoyed this video Alastair, thank you and the references you give for products is so helpful. It has arrived at a most appropriate time as I’m about to embark on a wardrobe build flanked by a couple of bookcases. Can I ask, is there any particular reason for using timber instead of mdf for the plynths, as I have noticed you use both ? I want to use inset doors too, and you have confirmed why, I think they look great. The whole job looks classy with the oak and paint contrast and your process looks very slick ! Between yourself and Mr Millard, I’ve learnt so much. Thanks. Alex

      Hi Alex I’ve stumbled across this comment which I seem not to have answered!! A bit late now but… I think I basically just had some of that timber lying around, but also I felt it would be a more rigid base than mdf and the smoother cut edges would make sliding the boxes into position easier!

    Hi Alistair. Thanks so much for posting such helpful videos - they've helped me to build my own built in wardrobes at home 🙂 The only thing I can't seem to find anywhere online are the dimensions for stiles and rails! I've made traditional wadrobes like these and wonder what width you've used for top, middle and bottom rails and also the width of the stiles? My wadrobes are 2000mm tall. I'd be grateful for your advice. Thank you 🙂

      Richard Clarke well, that’s a tricky one! I think I’d say the 18mm tri-scribe from swanky scribe, which I didn’t actually have at the time of this video but I used in this one: ua-cam.com/video/wpqVc_zJfgI/v-deo.html

      @Alastair_Freebird  4 роки тому +2

      Really, scribing tools come in at least 2 distinct categories: firstly marking tools which hold the pencil at a fixed distance off the wall. This includes the swanky scribes, block scribes, traditional compasses, profiler+, easy scribe and others. Some are fixed position and some adjustable. And secondly positioning tools like the U-scribe jig which hold the work piece at a position off the wall to match the scribe tools setting. This includes clamps. And then there are other tools like the profiling comb.

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  4 роки тому +2

      I suppose I chose the simple triscribe as the tool of choice if I was forced to have only one because the 18mm offset is probably the most useful and easy to position even if you didn’t have the u scribes

    Very nice cabinets and installation. It was strange seeing the GPOs inside the cabinets. Wouldn't it be more practical for them to be on the skirting board - this is not intended as a criticism at all, just that it would drive me crazy having to open a wardrobe in order to plug in an appliance. Thanks for the vi. Cheers, David.

      DRMNZ hi David I see what you’re saying, I just made the socket accessible rather than trapping it completely behind the back panel and in this project the customer planned to plug in a tv on the wall to the left of that wardrobes and conceal the wires inside the unit so it suited them this way

  • @Reef_Club_
    @Reef_Club_ 3 роки тому

    Fantastic build, you can really appreciate the differences between standardised and bespoke with this video. Whilst the difference may seem quite subtle on the face of it, the extra work involved is significant.
    Can I ask - when you make the 56mm (iirc) end fillers that also act as a side return which you then scribe into the wall, how do you make the corner assembly for this piece? Is it mitred along the long edge? And is it a sharp corner or do you round it off with a router once assembled?

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for commenting and the side panel is glued and domino jointed into the outer back face of the 56mm strip with a deliberate chamfer on each adjoining arrow to create a v joint which may also be caulked, prior to spray painting (on the basis that it is better to emphasise such a join than to unsuccessfully hide it). We usually now also glue and pin an 18mm filler strip into that assembly too so it goes on as one piece screwed on from the inside with screws under hinge plates. Our standard arris edge treatment is with a 2mm arris roundover bit from Wealden tools: www.wealdentool.com/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?WD=arris%202mm&PN=Online_Catalogue_Arris_Rounding_964%2ehtml#aT1306B

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  3 роки тому

      Hi, no it is too much trouble to try and line up with joists! I rely on the red Uno wall plugs for everything like this - 6mm drill hole, insert one to flush. And it grips well enough whether It’s plasterboard or lath and plaster. Screw heads either tucked behind a drop down lip, or wax filled or covered with a sticky cap that matches the melamine finish

    Morning.
    You say you use inset for 2 doors or less. Is that to give you a bigger side fillers? So on say a 6 door wardrobe you'd have all overlay to keep door same size? Great vid again. Taking lots of note👍

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  4 роки тому +1

      Jesse Mackin hi it’s simply because as soon as you have more than 2 doors you are going to have a door with its hinge side adjacent to another door and then if you are using the inset hinge you need to add a cover strip in between the doors. For long runs of doors I just usually prefer the doors to all sit side by side using overlay hinges (to be honest this is partly laziness, avoiding the extra process of cover strips to prepare and fit!). A cover strip of some sort is necessary as a scribe at wall sides, and it also looks good on projecting sides as in this project, and using inset hinges just makes it a bit easier to make those scribes wider without too much packing material; reclaiming 18mm usable space inside the carcase on each side, and making it possible to fit the scribe directly to the carcase edge.

    • @jessemackin6875
      @jessemackin6875 4 роки тому

      @@Alastair_Freebird on your wardrobes vid part 2:doors and scribes you have the end doors as overlay (think it's a 6 door) Is that to just keep all hinges consistent. I've also been advised to have the end fillers around 50mm or is it just an aesthetic thing?

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  4 роки тому

      Jesse Mackin yeah it just gets a bit confusing mixing hinges and different door sizes vs carcase sizes to accommodate the inset hinges. 50mm scribe minimum makes sense for door to open at least 90 degrees without the handle immediately hitting the wall

      They're called Space Plugs, have a google. They're threaded so you can adjust them to the gap. They're hollow so you can put a screw through the carcass, through the space plug and into the wall. The idea is to keep the carcass from deforming or pulling out of square/ plumb under the screw compression. Hope that helps 👍
