  • What do lemurs sound like?
Lemurs are primitive primates that have developed over millions of years in Madagascar, separately from mainland African species. New species of lemur are discovered every year, and known species are also split based on new research. Madagascar is a treasure trove of biodiversity, a dream for naturalists and sound recordists like myself alike. Sadly most populations of lemurs and other wildlife are threatened in one way or another, by all kinds of factors including habitat destruction, slash and burn agriculture, conflict with humans, poaching, wildfires etc.
On my trip to the red island in 2022 I had many opportunities to observe and record lemurs. By far the most common ones were the Brown lemurs, although it seems like every location has a distinct subspecies. These little creatures are very inquisitive and approached me briefly on several occasions. It wasn't enough to get any good recordings though so I had to study them over several days to find out about their habits.
Once I had a rough idea about their territories and movements during the day, I set up several rigs in places I expected them to pop up. One of these rigs was at the top of a rocky pinnacle next to a shady bush, and it seems like they really preferred this rest spot during the heat of the day. They spent a couple of hours investigating the rig once they found it, and then they seemed to relax.
To my ears they sound quite similar to baboons and some monkeys I've recorded in Africa. These grunts are eerily human and reminiscent of other primate sounds for sure. Of course this is just one of their calls and they use others, so I will have to go back and spend more time recording them.
Recorded with Zoom F6 and Lom mikroUsi Pro at Tsingy de Bemaraha NP in western Madagascar. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:

This is one of the weirdest recordings I've ever heard. Clicky but also gutteral, and CONSTANT. Sounds like there's a hihat in there once in a while (exhales, I'm guessing). Man, this made my day. Our world is so amazing.

Yes, very reminiscent of certain human languages and of course baboon contact calls.
