- I did NOT expect this fishing session to turn out like this!! I went exploring a small river in the lake district to do some lure fishing for trout BUT... I ended up catching a huge fish that should not be in there!! - Enjoy :)

I worked on a fish farm, we used loose fish to the river during heavy flooding where the take away pipes from the ponds weren't large enough to deal with a the rain so you couldnt regulate the pond levels. They are supposed to be all triploid fish but some did produce eggs you'd see it when filleting them. So best bet is to kill them if caught in the river system. The eggs used to come from Norway and North America. When they were like a steelhead variant out of North America they used love to try migrate up the pipe work and escape too.

Two things, I love that feeling you get when your clutch is a little to tight and you go into panic mode once something bigger takes off!
Secondly me and a friend fished a river years back. He suddenly hooked into something and it went off like a rocket. I thought had to be a Barbel. Nope it was a Rainbow Trout about 5lbs. Turns out there was a Trout farm upstream.
It’s what we fish for! What a story too, love it!

I wouldn’t have returned that rainbow shouldn’t be in that stream. It will be devouring small wild trout for fun. Great video tho enjoyed the what what what moment 😂🎣
Thank you, haha it makes me laugh too! I was very unsure about what to do for a while but thought I’d let it go. With the condition of the fish I don’t think it will survive for a lot longer to be honest - I’ll be back up there often enough to see!
@@pikeandperch rainbow trout have established to our lakes and rivers and can live in poorer conditions then brown trout so the likely hood of that trout dieing any time soon is low.

I caught a rainbow in a small river where it shouldn't have been . It had inhaled the lure and after a long time nursing it I knew it would not survive. This didn't sit well with me as I practice catch and release. A friend who is a fly fisherman said i did the right thing as they will eat everything in the river and are twice the size of a brownie the same age .
Ahh okay, a similar situation then. That was my issue too it didn’t sit well with me but I thought if it swims off I will let it but I know not to now.
I had a couple good days catching rainbows on the Emont 30 odd years ago after escapes from a local trout farm caught one off howtown pier same era . I think it's illegal to release non natives fish not 100% sure though

idealy id like to take it back to the pond where it came from to be fed properly. realistically, you wouldnt have the gear to do that so letting it go again was the right choice imo

That would have got chapped bud , can’t reproduce and only going to eat wild stock 😢 I’m c&r but they’re literally bred to be chapped so would’ve been going home for the dogs , tight lines 🎣

Kill and eat. You need to learn to operate a landing net left handed, it's a lot easier than swapping hands back and forth.
Well pointed out - I swapped hands at the end for filming purposes due to the side the fish was coming in on. If I had used my left hand I'd have been at an angle and you guys wouldn't have seen the footage!
