- Play at home special present - Siouxsie & the banshees.
This is great. Really something awsome strange madness from the early 80's.
Robert Smith plays in it as well (as we all know, he was a banshees member for 2 periods in the old days).
Looks like Alice in wonderland has returned.
Play at home is part of a channel 4 series.

====================================
Siouxsie and the Banshees, "Play at Home" on Channel 4 (1984, video, entire show, 50 minutes)
If you like the Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees, 1983/1984 was an absolute golden period.
Robert Smith was playing guitar with the Banshees (one of several stints), appearing on Nocturne (the Banshees live from the Royal Albert Hall -- a stunning gig released on double vinyl and VHS!) and on the studio LP Hyaena; Robert Smith and Steve Severin had formed the Glove with Jeanette Landray (then girlfriend of Severin's band mate Budgie) and Siouxsie and Budgie had formed the Creatures.
1984 was also a golden era for live music TV with the Tube, the Old Grey Whistle Test and, briefly "Play at Home" -- a series of documentaries about leading rock bands made by themselves... what could go wrong?
So the Banshees do their own unique (and surreal) version of Alice in Wonderland, with a full supporting cast, and intercut with music from the Banshees, the Glove and the Creatures. Siouxie's dis-embodied blood-red lips narrate the story, and chews all available furniture. Green screen tech must have been cheap -- the whole show is littered with really bad backgrounds (but I think they new that).
And, yep, that is Budgie in the top photo!
This was a great watch and it came up the other day on UA-cam -- the entire 50 minute show. It is also available on the DVD re-release of Nocturne.
====================================
The Play At Home series offered four musical acts:
New Order, Echo and the Bunnymen, Virginia Astley and of course Siouxsie and the Banshees, during the period that Robert Smith of The Cure was in the band-an hour of TV to do pretty much whatever they wanted. When they saw what the Banshees cooked up, I'm sure the execs were both thrilled and nervous (What happened to Channel 4 over the years???).
The Banshees' Play At Home episode was finally released as a DVD extra on the reissue of the 1983 Nocturne concert film in 2006. Note inclusion of music from side-projects The Creatures and The Glove. Longtime Banshees producer Mike Hedges makes an appearance as the Queen of Hearts and Annie Hogan, once Marc Almond's musical collaborator, can be seen as the Doormouse.
According to Slicing Up Eyeballs, Banshees bassist Steven Severin is preparing a 20 disc mega-box set including all eleven Siouxsie & the Banhsees albums and DVDs of vintage live performances. Twenty discs! Can't wait.
Literally what the FUCK did i just watch!? I only came here for Robert lol
Aside from making astoudingly great music, Siouxsie, Severin, Budgie and Robert have the most enticing speaking voices ever.
I like to think of this as all of their personalities mixed together and put on a screen
Also why is robert such a good alice
Surprisingly, Robert Smith comes across as a rather good actor.
Gregory Patrick Suprisingly? Hmm ... If you asked the man himself he’d probably say he can’t act at all as he’s frequently said about many Cure videos, Charlotte Sometimes being a good (or bad?) case in point. On the other hand he’s been making and performing incredible art for over 40 years now so maybe not so surprising after all?
Amazing quality for such an old production. It pays to use film.
@@angrypossumsx1259What?There was no acting to be done in that music video. The band is just watching a young lady enter an an old building only to scare herself shitless and run out. Actors, if they are any good, are just really convincing liars. Robert liked to lie quite a bit in his youth. If he had had the desire and dedication, he would have been quite decent. He's got a very expressive face and he's a perfectionist. I'm glad he didn't have the acting bug though and naturally gravitated toward music instead.
Robert did a great job in this. I too am glad he focused on music. He clearly could have gone in other directions and been successful. Picture a world without the Cure, and instead, Mr Smith is the CEO of a real estate empire or the founder of a burger chain... I'm grateful for the world we have.

I don't know what I just watched, but I know I'm significantly more goth for having watched it.
"If you looked at them in a certain way, they'd jump. Like that...like that...like that..."
OMG HE IS SO CUTE!!!!
Robert Smith is so cute!😍 I love his accent ❤️😄😘😍
robert smith's voice is so adorable and so is Budgie's and oh my god, don't start talking about adorable Siouxsie!!!
wow you bloody beautiful♥🕷♥
The way Robert Smith speaks 😍💘

It truly is a shame in the cosmic sense of things the Robert and Siouxsie couldn't continue to work together. I love both their bands individually and appreciate their work together.
You know although I loved that union the show is all about siouxsie and Robert is all about the cure.. Robert isn't meant to play second chair to anyone.. Even to Siouxsie whom I worship! So it makes cosmic sense to me that it didn't last long
You know your'e right. They are better individually I just wish that they got along- a collaboration or two in the last twenty years
plus would have been a treat.
diavolo 78 you know no shit. Robert always loved to play with siouxie and had a side project with siouxie founder Severin. he was in deep drug abuse and just couldnt keep working so much.
Sioux bullied him quite badly
@@thunder_heads source?
Aww, Robert looks so cute as Alice! xD I love his softspoken ways ❤
Te gustaría que te susurre el gordito ahora?😸
I know
Robert is such a trip. Literally, he's trippin' me out..sooo trippy..
Robert is so disturbingly hot... I love him
These cats (and Souixsie) were EXTREMELY talented. That little interlude with Robert Smith on keyboards and whosit on cello was very nice.
Morris the cat the 'little interlude' is song 'a blues in drag' performed by The Glove. and the 'whosit' is the Siouxie and the Banshees founding member Steve Severin
I had never even heard of this before! Absolutely fabulous! Budgie reciting 'Yon Lion's Eaten Our Albert' is surreal as fuck.
This is simply....terific, loveable, adictable, everythingable....
Marcos Kashiwa You took the words out of my mouth...
The bit with Robert is how a sensory overload feels
omg yeah the first time I saw it I was so confused lol
Yes!!
I love how strange and fever dream-ish this feels.
A Blues in Drag makes me cry every time. It's so peaceful and touching
I’m confused, amazed, and impressed all at the same time
Love this 1983 Tv show. It smells LSD but it's awesome!!! Robert and Siouxsie forever!!!
I'd describe this as:
A teenagers messy room in the 80's, except the room is a brain and the synapses are lemonade.
Wendy Martin Amen!!
yes
I used to have this on VHS back in the day. Robert was such a hottie. Sigh...
missescookie Yes, me too, but now i'm glad to have this "digitalized" for a couple of years.
I used to have this, wait I still do. Why don't you?
@@RunToEternity Sadly, sold most of my Cure collection about 20 yrs ago that included a ton of VHS!
Miss Cookie, where would you rank "The Robfather" as the hottest of the British male singers of the 1980's (Simon LeBon, Sting, Morrissey, Martin Gore, Bernard Summer, Billy Idol, George Michael)?
@@EricandDish robert ranks #1 for hotness for me. Without all the makeup, years ago he was very handsome.
Didn't even know Robert Smith was in the banshees for 2 periods that's Kool
"Babey babey;
That's all they ever told me,
Don't be so slowly,
That's all he ever told me;
Babey babey,
Babey babey!!!" Oh Robert.. he's so handsome like... yeah,he's only a handsome guy! x3
Remember watching this excitedly when I lived in a flat in Belfast with my hippy punk mates!
I wish Robert Smith and Steven Severin would do another The Glove album!!
Ah, this is so beautiful, or maddening, Siouxsie and Robert always make me smile. But.. What is this? It's amazing. Creepy, trippy, British, beautiful. No clue. But I love it.
Siouxsie and the Banshees’ “Alice In Wonderland”-inspired “Play at Home” special that aired on the U.K.’s Channel 4 in 1983, during the period Robert Smith was in the band.
The 50-minute special, which has since been included on the “Nocturne” DVD, was created by the band itself, and it shows. There’s music by The Banshees, The Creatures and The Glove, and all sorts of odd vignettes, including, as you can see above, Siouxise and the whole band dressed up as Alice.
I feel like I just tripped and fell headfirst down the rabbit hole!
They had access to the best cocaine in the early 8os. Coke and LSD profoundly color all of the most brilliant artistic media of the era. This is a PRIME example. Fabulous! Thank you so much!
First time seeing this and I thought I saw everything from Robert and siouxsie
ok im in love with Siouxsie, she's perfect and so talented omg
- this is a treasure - be sure to cherish this all hallows eve / easter spring festival mash up -
Their stories are very profound! Round and around! :P
I've been looking for the whole thing and so relieved to have found it. Heavens bless you !!
Edit: For some strange reason I seem to be extremely obsessed with this video. I consider it a good thing really. There's nothing in the world like it.
Wow wow wow just after watching this I was never the same again.
PS Robert's the cutest Alice ever, Budgie's a close second
I love Siouxsie, and I didn’t know this existed until today. Fantastic post! I recognized a couple of the shots in the Siouxsie spoken section that were used in the Peek-a-boo video.
One of the best things I have ever seen.
What's the story behind this show, I wouldn't expect them to have a prime time TV special, and would love to know how such a pristine copy surfaced.
I'm a huge fan and i'm like... '' WTF is this ? '' Cool !
Same here
Thank you-Thank you!! Now my life is complete.....Lord keep you
No surprise Severin & Fat Bob were doing loads of acid around this time!
stevobath Nevertheless.... A masterpiece!! :))

Amazing "The Glove"
That little Gregory got himself a deal!
Their vignettes add such beautiful clarity to so many of their songs.

I remember waiting up as a young kid to see this, it was on way past my bed time!
I have been looking for the full program for ages. Thanks!!!
In other words, you like it too!!! Great to hear..
This is practically a Creatures video! It's the same kind of playing and experimenting that Siouxsie and Budgie did with creatures, but with visuals! So excited to have found this. Never knew it existed!
Woah this is amazing. How have I never seen this before today? THANK YOU FOR POSTING! ;)
For acid heads, by acid heads. (FAHBAH®™)

Duuuuuuude. Tons of British post punk rock stars on serious amounts of acid.

"Nocturne" - Siouxsie and The Banshees Live at the Royal Albert Hall (1983)
@ Filipe Matias - Yes, what about it?
@@Cureboy : The last 20 minutes or so in this video are taken from it which is one of the BEST live albums ever from Siouxsie and The Banshees or any other bands!
I love this!!!! Thank you for posting! :)
You're welcome. And just 2 dislikes... Not bad I think. Afterall it is a good video.
Great video!
Thank you so much for uploading this !
I remember having this on VHS *_A LONG TIME AGO._* S&TB were a phenomenal band. For me, they easily rivaled The Cure. So many laying heaps of praise on Smith but, nary a positive word about The Banshees, when in fact, they're sister bands along with The Glove. All 3 compliment each other equally. Shame that most aren't even that familiar with S&TB's material as a whole but, quickly dismiss it in order to put all their focus/praise on Smith and The Cure...
(Still nice to see Tolhurst and Thompson behind the masks in the Smith "skit" and _'A Blues In Drag'_ is still one of the best and most elegantly beautiful instrumentals of all time)
+River Of Blacklights,
Well said. I agree. Even though my number 1 band is still The Cure, close 2nd is S&TB.
Nothing is soo clean, nothing is so perfect.bobby,, this is strange but is a dream? ?Alice is hot😍 Robert
Thanks SO much for uploading this!!!!
that music at the background reminds me of pere ubu, weird sick stuff
great fade out loop at the end too!
amazing
Have hunted for the full show for decades. At the time this was made, the Banshees were in their Psychedelic peak, with The Creatures song Weathercade in here, plus music by The Glove; the respective side projects of Sioux/Budgie and Severin/Smith.
