The cure were supported by joy division at a pub in London on December 28th 1978 to a crowd of only 30-40 people which left both bands disappointed by the venue and money they got from it, later that night, on the way home to Manchester, Ian Curtis had his first ever seizure and was clinically diagnosed with epilepsy, a month later. Joy division became a big influence for the cure and Robert Smith and this cover feels like a tribute to them
joy division supported the cure in london in march 4th of 1979 so such event didn't happen that way. the gig you were referring to was on december the 27th, to only 30 people, and on the way back home, ian had his first recorded seizure. although i have to admit, that version of the events would make this cover feel way more haunting...
Not to mention that the cure practically followed new orders lead once they emerged from joy divisions ashes. Two(technically three) incredible bands reflecting and building upon each other
This is what a cover should be: recognizable as the original, but with the band placing their own flare on it. The Cure pays this reverence to the magic of Joy Division. Now if they could cover Joy Division's "In A Lonely Place" ... that would be a spectacle to behold :-)
Bush's cover of In A Lonely Place on The Crow 2 soundtrack is fairly good. But everyone likes different things because I personally didn't think this Cure cover was all that good.

JD is post-punk, while The Cure has more of a gothic, alterntative, new wave sound. A good cover shouldn't be an exact copy of the original cover, it should be an artist's tribute to the other in thier own way.

Rich Martin I thought Ian was pretty clear in love will tear us apart compared to other tracks which became hard to understand over hookys bass but that came down to the mixing process in all fairness. Your comment stands but I always picked up on the original just as well

Robert has always loved Joy Division and New Order. He has stated when he composed The Walk he looked to New Order's Blue Monday for inspiration and you can hear that inspiration. In a live 13 min version of A Forest toward the end he plays the guitar riff from She's Lost Control. Here, The Cure stick to what they know, being themselves always and I for one think there's nothing worse than covering any artist and deliberately trying to sound like and sing like the original. It defeats the purpose of a cover. I think Ian would have liked it.

@@w.iraheta3769 it was absolutely incredible, my favourite band of all time is Nine Inch Nails and they do an amazing cover of Joy Divisions Dead Souls, with was is on the soundtrack for The Crow, that soundtrack also features my favourite Cure song -Burn.

What a beautiful cover, Robert catches the emotion exquisitely.
Robert has always loved Joy Division and New Order. He has stated when he composed The Walk he looked to New Order's Blue Monday for inspiration and you can hear that inspiration. In a live 13 min version of A Forest toward the end he plays the guitar riff from She's Lost Control. Here, The Cure stick to what they know, being themselves always and I for one think there's nothing worse than covering any artist and deliberately trying to sound like and sing like the original. It defeats the purpose of a cover. I think Ian would have liked it.

This is a gem only Joy Division could do but I must say The Cure's version is pretty damn good!!
