Small correction, those corydoras are pygmaeus, not hastatus. Pretty tank

I really want to see more non-co2 tanks. Everything in the hobby is so expensive, and it’s nice to see what can be achieved on a smaller budget. Especially with using organic soils since much like co2 systems ada soil and the like are not very affordable to the majority of people. ❤

I agree and I think that low tech tanks using soil makes the hobby more welcoming to young people and people on a tight budget. It is also most sustaining for this earth.

I think the ideal is a mix of what is financially accessible and that which is possible without limits. One size does not fit all.

    • @benbowland
      @benbowland 8 місяців тому +3

"Everything in the hobby is so expensive" It's really not. A 10 gallon tank using a Petco Aqueon aquarium from one of their sales can be fully kitted out and planted with a deep soil bed that'll grow plants like weeds for like 75 bucks if you're smart. That's less than half of what the average American spends on gas every month. If you expand the budget to a normal gas bill, ~175, you can do a lot. People get stuck in this small bubble of Aqua Design Amano status symbols (which are obviously gorgeous but are clearly luxury products), cant afford them, so they move to other brands like UNS and don't realize that they are looking at Rolls-Royce's and complaining "cars are so expensive", and then moving to BMW to find a discount and getting upset when they see that they're still expensive.
I know you're trying to be encouraging but I think the framing that "everything in the hobby is so expensive" is itself untrue and discouraging. If by "the hobby" you mean "luxury nature aquariums" then yeah, shocker, luxury products are expensive. But if by "the hobby" you mean "keeping aquatic ecosystems in a box" then there is nothing about that that is inherently expensive at all.

@@benbowland I understand what you’re saying but it only strengthens the point I’m making. By “hobbyists” I’m referring specifically to planted aquascaping hobbyists.
The vast majority of which is shelling out $150 for a 10 gallon rimless tank, another $50 on substrate, $200 on hardscape, and another $100-200 on a co2 injection. It is expensive to have nice planted aquascapes when you compare the majority of tanks on UA-cam. Dirty planted tanks just don’t look the same and co2 injected tanks and I’d like the master of aquascaping to prove me otherwise using the most budget friendly alternatives; organic potting soils, and no co2.

@@GrumpyGillsFishing you can always make bio co2. Will cost you pratically nothing, only some of your time to piece it together but after that it works just as good as an expensive system. In my opinion the plants are the most expensive but if you have some time you can try buying the ones you want first and grow and divide them for a while untill you have enough of them before you setup your final aquascape. There´s also no need to buy expesive soils from ADA, there are cheaper alternatives that will do the job just as well. But you can´t expect to get showroom scapes without investing a bit of your time and money. And the bigger the tank, the bigger the ivestment. And tanks btw don´t need to have the optiwhite glass. Normal glass will also be just as good.

Now make a big cube! Big cubes look monolithic in their own way. It's like an alien abducted a chunk of nature like a minecraft block. Especially with the glass showing us the forbidden -side view- of the fish it looks magically unnatural. Before glass we could only view the fish from above if you think about it

It is a beautiful tank! I've been thinking of getting a shallow tank for my Dario hysginon. George, low tech tanks are amazing. I've had several different low tech dirted tanks over the last 10 years. Different sizes. Different plants. Almost zero algae ever. There is definitely more than one way to have a successful aqua scape!

I want to have a long and low aquarium. Most bigger aquariums get a lot taller than I need them to be, and I think it's easier with aquascaping in a low aquarium, maybe because I've mostly done small aquariums and I'm not used to build anything tall, so everything at the top of the aquarium just gets... empty 😅I see all the beautiful aquascaping on youtube, and then when it's time to do my own, I'm just confused anyways. Oh, and I love to see what can be done without using CO2. I try keep my aquariums as low tech as possible, but still with a lot of beautiful plants...

Shallow tanks aren't that common in Czechia, but I got one ultra-shallow for open nano paludarium. Just plants growing out of water, snails, maybe shrimp. It's 30x30x8 cm (30x30x12 with empty part). I've seen enough videos of shallow tanks and nano paludariums to want to try it. Maybe another attempt on Wabi Kusa, too.
Good remark about watching the tank from top, that's one reason why i bought that nano.
I think shallow tanks don't get as much recognition as they deserve. Most shops don't sell them, with an exception of Dennerle Scaper line and custom-made tanks.

Hi George. Nice tank. Good to know you might be able to grow higher difficulty plants in a lower tech set up.
Quick question: Which fertiliser would you recommend for a heavily planted and highly stocked tank. No co2. Aqua soil an sand. Specialised or premium?
Bonus question: Any chance of seeing that Chili Anubias more widely avaliable Maybe in the 1,2 grow cup?
    Cheers, mate.

I've been growing Fissidens fontanus in low tech for years, the only real problem I have with that moss is that it can easily be taken over by beard algae etc. That's a sweet tank, love the Neocaridinas everywhere, I have those too but never in those numbers!

Looks really natural, like the shallows of a tropical pool at the side of a river, with lovely bright green algae on the pebbles.
Do you think George, the modest use of aquatic soil with sand on top and the relatively intense light has contributed to the success? As well of course as 'neglect', my tanks often look better when I have been on holiday for a week or two.
