took me 20 years of practice before getting the kom that stuck for 10 years. fast or slow, that canyon is magic. that’s why we do it. over and over and over again. thanks for preserving it on film before the fires made their trip through it. ❤
Yeah, thing is when you had the KOM back in the day the trail was much more technical and harder to navigate. Now it’s just a long fire road. Kudos to you Tony.
My audio was mostly swearing and heavy breathing, plus considering giving up before the steep section, so you haven’t missed much 😅 The rustling leaves ASMR is better anyway
@@bestjal654 agreed. I’m inspired by this dude’s commitment to long weekend rides through the Santa Monica mountains. For someone who isn’t a pro, it’s truly impressive.
Safa ...I wish you and all the people from L.A the best with the fires...I know that's your cycling backyard.....stay positive my boy......i was on that job in that canyon working on the natural gas pipelines that your riding thru
Ah man watching this with the fires is wild. I climb up westridge/descend sullivan 3x a week… Hopefully it bounces back soon. Thanks for all your videos!
Such an awesome "carrot" for our indoor high cadence spins. Excellent editing, simplicity works. And no ego mentioning the big power on a segment versus being a World Tour racer. We've added this vid to our "Watch Later" list again!
Thanks guys . Great but hard to watch . I bailed on surfing topanga tuesday morning because the wind was killing the waves . Now all of my favorite neighborhood areas are ashes 😢
Thanks for the video safa. I used to ride Sullivan weekly in the early 2000's when it was mostly single track from overgrowth ,before gravel bike and Strava days. Fire road all the way doesn't look fun but does bring back memories. As for Drake his HR didn't even get close to 190 and he didn't even break a sweat. Need to push harder!
Dude can totally relate taking KOMs from pros, just sniped one from Matej Mohoric one segment here in Abu Dhabi by a small airport, great content, LA rise up…
Great video and I like the e-bike aspect. Looked like you were sitting at and then above threshold for the entire climb, so you definitely worked for that footy. Keep these coming!
Something beautiful and sad about this.I am not talking about Tony loosing his legendary KOM, rather the fires that have affected so many and will keep this area out of reach for all of the community. Thank you for posting Brian.
Nice effort. Congrats! Doubt @worstretirementever used a draft for any part of his attempt though. That might be the reason why 381W versus his 400 snagged it (and Phil is presumably lighter). Just saying.
If you think that measly draft saved 20 watts over the whole effort then you don't know much about power. Phil's meter runs hot and Drake's runs low is the answer.
@@SAFABrian Super fun video, but yeah about 3 minutes of drafting would make a huge difference in a 17 minute segment. Amazing ride and effort! Keep up the amazing work!
So fast! But that climb is not recognizable, as it is so smooth now, and it used to have those concrete rip raps, a few rocky sections, and the steep exit section was loose and rocky. But you ride it as it lies… to use a golf metaphor. Great job!
So cool seeing the captioning burned in the video! Huge accessibility done, cheers for that! 🫵🏻👑 I actually enjoyed the new layout as well, quality work Drake. Tough cycle it seems 🤝
Ive not ridden it, but it looks awesome, or atleast I highly suspect it was awesome before taming it. Im biased, but taming anything never ever makes it better. Smoother and faster? Oh well. Great vid regardless .
Coming from someone that rides an “actual”gravel bike more than the others I own, this is why gravel is such a bs term generally speaking. A road bike with road tyres. It’s dusty tarmac lol.
Considering Drake flatted out on his first attempt and so did our other fast friend earlier that morning, both on road bikes, I'd say this segment is defnitely gravel worthy. Taylor and I both think this would be faster on a gravel bike, Drake doesn't own one. Go ride ya bike!
@@SAFABrianwhich is arguably the reason why riding a road bike for the sake of a digital crown is silly haha. I’d say if you can ride a road rig on it without puncturing it may as well be road. But each to their own, as long as fun is being had. And fair enough, it would be interesting to see the difference. Will do mate you too 💨
Click though to the strava. They rode this canyon twice, stopped for a bagel and even got a top 10 down Tuna Canyon after this effort. So cafe stop, road, gravel, uphill effort, downhill fun, linking up with multiple duifferent friends along the way. Sounds like your coffee is real bitter.
@@roadcyclist1 I raced mountain bikes in the 90's and 2000's. Many races and on the Podium a few times, but only one win. You know nothing about me or even half of what I know about cycling, so your comment makes you sound like a dweeb.

Nice one! Such a bummer to think about this trail now...

Well done, sick bike btw.
im going to play the steep section on repeat

That looks like a lot of fun. The amount of effort that it takes to finish this is unreal.

Fun to watch but I'm going to assume, to Phil's credit, that he didn't have a lead out.
Bet he had better wind tho
Thank you for the great video! New stuff for Zwift today😀
"Faff around " lol. Love it!
I don't know how close you are to the fires, but I hope you and your crew are ok 🙏
Thanks for your concern. We are all good!
Smokin'. Best wishes and thoughts to all affected by the fires--from Oregon, we know it.
Nice ride man! Bring more KOM videos please!
How he's still smiling after that effort is unreal
Nice to see Taylor is out with ya 👍🏾
BLASTING, what a picturesque climb!
That hurts, you guys are so tough! Just keep going.. 😀
Very impressed with your courtesy out there SAFA!
Barely out of breath! If im honest makes Phil's effort even more impressive.

Phil "fixes" MTB trails to take KOMs. I wouldn't hold him above having a lead out

It has changed a lot in the last couple years!
More KOM please SAFA, love your style 🎉
So much dry stuff everywhere. No wonder that there was crazy wild fire.. Btw those data heart rate, watts etc. are yours or his?
U are still alive. Holy shit. Best wishes what u do is si very risky
Love the subtitles 🙏🏽
He's not even breathing that hard at the end, damn!
Does anyone now if Phil Gaimon also had a lead rider for the first part of his KOM effort?
Sick ride boys!
So cool seeing the captioning burned in the video! Huge accessibility done, cheers for that! 🫵🏻👑 I actually enjoyed the new layout as well, quality work Drake. Tough cycle it seems 🤝
Thanks for the feedback!
Ouawww ! Faire ça avec des GP5000 30/32mm c'est fort ! 💪👏🔥
Mountainbike or Gravelbike?
Whatever floats your boat. Depends on where you live.
🔥🔥🔥
What’s the deal with breaking KOM with such huge leadout ??
Damn I wouldve never guessed a road bike could handle a trail like that
Sad to know what happened in the fire. But you can feel how dry the vegetation is!
"Taylor, come hop on me..." - Brian pal, you forgot you are on a EEEE_bikeeeee. 😀
@drakedeuel Man of the people, Darimo!
Epic! Phill will be glad )
Phil is cool about it but some of his fans are crying in the comments 😂
Been thinking about you the last days, hope you and your friends are doing as well as possible 🤍
So why was the ride flagged on Strava?
Definitely was pretty there. It will grow back; CA chapparal burns and come back stronger. Deuel is a total weapon...
Dang, it seems so dry... the crunchy leaves, brown vegetation, and dust 😬
People who don’t know this trail don’t realize how difficult it gets right around 16:00, he didn’t even slow down 🤯
一日も早い復興を祈っています
Did Phil have a lead out man or a guy motivating him?
Did he have a full time job inside?
Ive not ridden it, but it looks awesome, or atleast I highly suspect it was awesome before taming it. Im biased, but taming anything never ever makes it better. Smoother and faster? Oh well. Great vid regardless .
Beauty climb
Why did you not give a good pull on the ebike? Would have helped.
to think this world doesnt exist literally a couple days later...
👍👍👍💯💯💯👍👍👍
🤛🤛🤛💪💪
I remember the good ol' days of the canyon... sweet double/single track. Gas Co. ruined it.
It was still really cool with all the singletrack sidemissions before it flooded.

hahahaha your South African twang coming out strong today my boet!!!
Just came back from the motherland 😂
Didn't expect this to be as butt clenching to watch as it was 😅
I'm gonna go ahead and assume this bothers Phil a little bit.
Wow… so cool you got it with a lead out. You are so awesome🙄
You couldn't get it with a peleton of 50 guys. You are so awesome.
You’re right. But I don’t brag about taking someone’s KOMs with a lead out. 🖕🏼🤡
@jaredhileman4111 correct, because you can't take anyone's koms as we have already established.
And now this trail doesn’t even exist anymore 😢
It's still there. It just looks different.
hammer time
Y😮,Brian,
Nice 2 water bottles and tail light still shitting on Phil’s KOM time, nicely done Drake
Wtf sand on 5 percent with road bikes?
Dylan Johnson would fly by you on MTB tires lol
Stan alert
Glaze.
Delusional
Rookie numbers
What is this, a drafting KingsOM? If you have any integrity, take down this video and the strava segment. Phil doesn't cheat.
Phil is also part of the #legalizedrafting movement m.ua-cam.com/video/CjC323Dqec8/v-deo.html&pp=ygUWUGhpbCBnYWltb24gcGVwcGVyZGluZQ%3D%3D
😂🥲
Phil didn't have a bunch of dogs and people in his way. Also, there was little to no drafting.
Guess those Mandeville canyon Strava KOMs will live forever if they close that road that’s about to become scorched earth
Drafting shouldn't count
It's strava, man. There's no rules!
a lot of crying in the comments lol
AntiSafa )))

Hanging out with friends on a group ride and hitting some Cafe stops to talk smack is a lot more fun. This video was even boring to watch.
Then go do it
