Being from Utah this was fun to watch. I have been ridding all over this area for 35 years. The camera does not capture how spectacular it really is. That last climb is truly a grind. I have done it multiple times. First rule is never go off road in the rain. The mud is worse than anything you have ever experienced. The first day I thought oh no dont go.

Also a Utahn bikepacker! I thought they were doing the full kokopelli route on gravel bikes in the mud and was convinced they wouldn’t make it. Luckily it seems they did a modified gravel route and it looked like a blast!

I unexpectedly lost my Father two weeks ago. He was British, but immigrated from the London area to the Moab area as a teenager. He loved the geology and how different it was than the UK.
Seeing your reactions to the majesty of the landscape made me feel like I got a glimpse of what it would have been like for him. That felt extremely meaningful and perfectly timed, thanks for sharing!

The last climb is called the Schaffer Trail, it was built back in the 40's&50"s as the area around Moab is rich in Uranium. My friends uncle built the road. Most of the backcountry roads in the area were for Uranium mining and exploration. Lots of great native American history in the area also. Good Fun! Thanks Connor & Ian. Cheers!

Connor and Ian. so great that you enjoyed Utah--my home state after I first visited Moab 35 years ago! I know some of the roads you traveled and your response to seeing that amazing terrain is so much like mine after my first trip--"another planet" is as close as words can capture it. Bummer about the rain, which of course is rare in that part of the world, but you both handled it very and then got the big payoff of those Utah sunny skies. This is an amazing place to live! Thanks again for sharing your adventure.

Another Utah local commenting here :). So cool to see some of the incredible country getting some screen time. I hope Conner was able to go visit Arches National Park as well while he was in the area. Also, Dead Horse Point State Park has some pretty fun mountain bike trails right by the visitor center, for anyone who is thinking of checking it out. Lastly, it's really true that a camera falls so short of capturing what it's like in that red cliff country. It takes my breath away every time I visit. I'm glad Connor got to experience it and share it with GCN viewers.

Not only was I happy to see places that I've thoroughly enjoyed riding in, but I was very happy to be able to tell that y'all obeyed the law and didn't take any drone footage in Canyonlands National Park. It's a shame you couldn't get an exemption. Drone footage on White Rim's Schafer Climb would really show how unreal that climb is.

As a native of Utah, I get down to Moab fairly often and always go with the full-suspension mountain bike but maybe a gravel biking trip should be the next adventure. I’m so glad that you made the trip to our great western desert mountains! I grew up along the Ohio river around Cincinnati, and had no idea just how different and special the desert is until I joined the US Army in 1976 and was stationed in El Paso and southern New Mexico. I fell in love with it immediately.
Although I raised my family near Dallas, vacation time always included trips to the Great Southwest. The lure of these beautiful places has endured throughout the years, and I moved back to the mountains of west Texas in 2007: one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
I’m still cycling at 69yo, still marveling at how each day shows me a new view of these magnificent mountains, still drinking in the scenery with “tourist’s eyes” after nearly 50 years. I think you may have caught the bug too, and I believe you’ll be coming back many times… Happy Trails, we’ll see you soon!😎❤️

I didn't want to leave when I went to Deadhorse Point a few years ago. Seeing the immensity of everything and the way the vastness of history is carved into the rocks was one of the most breathtaking and sublime experiences I've ever had. I am so glad you got to experience this place.

Reminds me of when I did “A Swell Night Out” bike packing trail not far from Dead Horse. I grew up in southern Utah and always loved the geography, but riding out there on a bike exposed to the elements and brutal climbs changed the way I view my home state. Thanks for sharing this, you got me scheming my next trip!

I will never forget my first trip to Moab in 1989 riding the White Rim Trail, it literally changed my life. I quit my job in the corporate world, got an volunteer job with the Federal Government, moved to Southern Utah, finally made it as a park ranger and never went back to an office job. Southern Utah is not a place that can be described with words it must be experienced. Conor make sure you read Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey about Moab in the 1960s as Park Ranger.

You made me homesick for my old stompin grounds! So glad you enjoyed. That area has given me many great memories rafting, canoeing, climbing, camping, canyoning and of course AMAZING mountain biking.
For so many new to the area, the scale is so large, it hurts the brain to process. So huge, we are so small but the beauty is incredibly stunning! THNX!!!

Phinney's dad is the wonderful Copper Triangle with about 100 mi with 3 high mountain passes including the 23 mi up Vail pass.

I rode through Moab last year in a supported bike event and I'm planning to go back with my friend next year to visit Canyonlands. It's wild to relive this and recognize some of the landmarks you visited, including Dead Horse Point! As you were trying to articulate what you were seeing I was just laughing and nodding and saying "Yep! Yep!" 🤣 It is pure majesty and otherworldly, impossible to describe. I can't wait to go back. 🤩
