    Hi again!
    Join me on this windy, beautiful downwind ride to Isafjordur, Iceland. This is the last port before sailing over to Greenland. As usual things did not go exacly as planned.
    Big thanks to the Australian musician Dustin Tebutt for making a soundtrack starting at 16:34 into the video, loved it Dustin! Check him out on UA-cam here: / @dustintebbutt
    Also big thanks to Rolly Tasker Sails for helping me out with a brand new A5 heavy duty gennaker, after I ripped the last one in the North Sea. In this video you can really watch it fly!

    Erik, sounds like you might have slipped a disc in your back and it's pinching your sciatic nerve in your lower back. Are you having pain in your buttocks that also goes down the back of your leg? If so, go see a chiropractor to get your lower back cracked and adjusted. I've had this so bad once that I couldn't get out of bed for 3 days. The condition is medically known at 'Sciatica'. It's when a disc in the lumbar region of the back gets out of place and pinches this nerve. If you slipped and twisted while trying to catch yourself, you probably popped the vertebrae out of place and it's pinching the nerve. Can be very painful and not something you want to 'muscle through' while solo sailing.
    I enjoyed the sail from Grundarfjordur to Isafjordur, especially when the wind filled in from behind, you popped the gennaker open, and Tessie took off! Like a race horse down the track! Doing 7 knots in 20 knots of wind means your apparent wind speed on the sail was 13 knots, about as much as a heavy, .75 ounce gennaker should handle. Good thing you weren't getting any higher gusts. Just one tip about gybing that sail: it was a good idea to blanket the gennaker by using the mainsail so you could furl it in. That's how that's normally done. I would also recommend that after the gennaker is furled that you center the mainsail traveler and tighten the mainsail sheet while the wind is still downwind and filling the sail, and THEN tack. This makes the distance the boom has to travel to gybe much smaller and decreases the load on the boom and main traveler when the sail goes from one side to another. I've seen tack points on the mainsheet break with sudden mainsail gybes where the boom goes all the way from one side to the other. Pulling the mainsail traveler to center and then tightening the mainsheet before you gybe will decrease the load put on where the mainsheet tacks to the traveler. This is especially important the harder the wind is blowing!
    Feel better, go see a medical doctor or better yet a chiropractor and have then 'crack' your back! Keep us posted about the next step, whether that's the push to Greenland or otherwise.

    • @m2pozad
      @m2pozad Рік тому +1

      It can go both ways with the chiropractor visit. Mine went south. For several hours after, I felt so much better, but then things started tightening up. In a few more hours I could no longer walk or even stand. Then, for about three days I had been sent to hell, the pain was so bad. Luckily I could find a neutral spot on my side. Where moving my left leg within a quarter of an inch was the pain-free zone. The pain eventually moved down the left leg and ended in the foot-ankle area. I've never gotten my original balance back in that ankle. An inversion table was a very helpful rehab program. Part of the problem was related to heavy intake of nitrate and phosphate preservatives in my diet... like Erik appears to do.

    • @waderogers
      @waderogers Рік тому

      @@erikaanderaa So you've recovered?? That's good to hear. I can see how that would have happened after you stepped in that diesel. Probably would have happened to anyone in that situation!
      Yeah, the gybe technique is a good one for heavy weather. Shit hits the fan in heavy weather if the boom slams over and breaks the attachment point on the main sheet to main traveler connection. The boom is then uncontrollable in high winds and high seas while the boat is pitching back and forth. Very dangerous! I had a similar situation last season when I helped deliver a 46' sailboat from Oregon to California here in the states and we got caught in heavy wind and couldn't furl the mainsail. The boom kept slamming back and forth, until we were able to get in the lee of an island (which blocked the wind) and were able to get the sail safely furled. If the shackle from the boom to the mainsheet traveler had broken during uncontrolled gybes, I can actually slam into the aft stays that are attached to the mast and bring the entire rig down!
      Stay healthy and looking forward to you completing your awesome journey to Greenland!

I tripped over a charging cable last year while getting up off the sofa. I didn't fall, but I heard a snap and a bright flame of pain lit up my foot. I had broke my 5th metatarsal. Thanks so much Erik, good to see you again. I have a suggestion, but i'm not a sailor and only someone who dreams i could do what you do. Would it not be a very good idea to get a strong belt around your waist that is connected to a very strong line connected around the mast? A 5 or 6 meters long line? That way you walk around easily without the line bothering you and if you go inside the cabin you just clip it off. Once you get used to it, i think you will hardly notice the line anymore. You are very experienced and concentrated at all times, but there is always this ONE second your not. If you fall over on the side (God forbid that) the line will make you end up behind the boat and you will be able to climb back on. Maybe my suggestion sounds like from someone who does not understand sailing, but personally i would make sure to be connected very solid to the boat at all times, after leaving port. So that if that ONE second comes, it will not have to be fatal. Think it over Erik. Hope to see many more of your fantastic adventures, thanks again for all you are showing us. Take good care!!

    Hope your back gets better soon. It sucks to hurt your back, I've done it myself many times. A lot of people that sail do yoga. I used to teach yoga and I had a lot of sailors and water sports people coming to my classes. It really helps you when you do things like slip and fall. Most of the time you get back up and brush it off because your body is loose and relaxed. You don't need any equipment, so you can even do it on the boat while you're sailing around.
    Look forward to your Greenland crossing, hope it happens soon...

    Absolutely love your adventures and videos, I think they are the best around... But it's heartbreaking seeing you get injured and not being able to fulfill your goal to sail to Greenland... As always I wish you the best because you deserve it.. 🥂🍸🍻💖

    Hi Erik, you certainly have had your fair share of troubles to overcome on your journey to Greenland, as someone who has also injured their back in a similar way, a piece of advice. Having pulled your back the muscles will spasm whenever you sneeze. To stop further injury when you feel you're going to sneeze cross your arms over your chest and tension them, this, I find stops the back muscles from spasming during the sneeze and further delays to the recovery time.

    805th subscriber LIKE; 4K+ desktop phantom shipmate & ride-along. Again - the drone footage - WOW! 7:49, 8:22, 12:51, 23:30, and others.

    Always a wonderful watch Eric congrats every time. It’s so great to have all the amazing drone footage of places not many dare to cruise - myself included! Your diesel spill along with being singlehanded shows how easy it is to have an accident. Thanks for sharing all in your vids, got everything crossed you manage it this time!

    Jacked my lower back lifting weights many years ago. Now every once in a while I do something dumb and can't walk for days. Totally empathize with you situation and laughed with you as it was obvious you were at the mercy of your body recovering. Best of health to your back Mr. Viking. I rarely watch 30 min videos but I watched yours.
