I was having similar problem except when I did the manual check as you showed I wasn't able to get each step to work the same.
I took the actuator off and it had a floppy/loose arm and so I decided to replace it as you showed and sure enough it fixed it.
Anyone who is concerned they might need to replace the drum hub instead of the actuator, just take the actuator off and replace it if it's got a loose arm.
Thanks so much for your in depth review, it made replacing the actuator so easy. Washing machine back up and running for $60. Very thankful!!

My man...thanks! I watched a bunch of videos trying to nail down my issue, so many were showing "almost" what mine was doing, but yours showed EXACTLY what mine was doing-the basket and agitator were just clicking back and forth together. It had been quite a while since I had observed what should be happening-the basket moving slightly in one direction, and the agitator rotating aggressively and far in the other direction, so until I saw your calibration at the end, I had forgotten what that action was supposed to look like. Aha! moment. I ordered an actuator for $28, total repair time was under 10 min. Did the calibration, working like new. Thanks again!

I just purchased a Maytag top loader 6 months ago. My clothes from day 1 come out crusty and not clean. I changed wash cycles and even purchased washing jacks. My 3 year olds clothes come out dirty. I’m at a loss at this point. The washing machine in my old apartment which was coin operated and shared with 16 other unites worked better then my current owned washer

Same! My old Whirlpool cleaned my clothes better than this Maytag. I wish I had never bought it and just fixed my old Whirlpool instead. The fact that it doesn't fill up the basin with enough water is ruining my clothes and sheets AND not cleaning them! What a rip off.

Yeah, we have a Maytag bravos XL. It sucks to. I’m just wondering do they make an extension for the agitator so that way it will actually agitate the clothes that seems to be the problem. They made it large capacity but they should’ve left the agitator tall and wondering if you can use an old agitator on the newer appliance

I watched some other videos about coins stuck under the wash plate stopping it from agitating. I thought it could be that, but taking the wash plate off is kicking my butt. I can't even get the bolt off. My machine is doing the same thing as the one in the video so I think I'll just try the actuator.

This looks similar to the problem I'm having. Without using the test codes, I just turned it on with no clothes and the agitator spun really fast and the machine shut down. Could this be a symptom of the actuator also?

  • @CarolynWilson-Powell-uz4kj

great video. I'm going to replace the actuator because it will not agitate during our wash but will spin. However during the tests, the washer would not spin in test mode at all, could it be something other than the actuator? Like I said it spins fine during a wash just not during a test mode, I attempted it 5 times to make sure it wasn't user error

If you push down the clothing basket and reach above it towards the front of the washer you will feel a sealed pouch stuck to the front of the washing machine. It helps if you can get another person to push the tank down while you gain access into the sealed pouch. Once you have the tech notes out of the pouch you can look up on the page with manual tests to select which test you wish the machine to do.

Is there any way to make the agitation stronger? While my agitator works as shown in the picture, the motion isn't strong enough to get anything that's actually dirty, clean. Between the fact that the water barely covers the clothes and the agitation is so weak (just kind of swishes the clothes back and forth) this washer is a real failure.

Great video!!! Quick question: what is the best indicator that the actuator is the problem versus the wash hub? In your video when the agitator was not moving as it should, is exactly what my agitator looked like when the machine had only made it partially through a load. Tried canceling the load and I almost never was able to get the lid to unlock. Disassembled and pulled out the wash hub and yes the plastic splines on the hub do look a little worn, but I never heard them slipping out grinding. Reassembled for testing and the agitator seem to be functioning properly and I was unable to manually stop the agitator from turning. Thanks so much in advance, for your time!!!!!!

@@Hobbyscrapperaustralia I appreciate the reply, but my wife and I have since reverted back to a set of 2001 Whirlpools, of which we are exceedingly happy with. Still have the other set and am looking to get rid of them. Still having the same issues as before, but I have had the wash plate, completely disassembled and all was fine with it. Every indication was pointing towards a main board failure. These machines were manufactured in 2018. The stuff they make today is just pure garbage and not built to last. Let me reiterate, we love our new-to-us whirlpools! 😁👍🏻 Thanks again!

This washer is junk. As an appliance service technician I work on them a lot. I have replaced many actuators and what people think is an overbalanced load is due to the very weak and cheap suspension system. I keep my van stocked with suspension kits, actuators and hub kits.

My Maytag Bravo mtc washer does not have an agitator in the center, and the clothes barely move. I can see through the window above.
Everything stays on top of the water, without brazing. How do you want it to wash well. ?
For bed sheets, these even worse. No movement, even if I put on only one sheet at a time.
And me, who was thinking of buying the best washing machine.
Maytag never sent me a letter saying that if I had a problem with my washer, it would be fixed at no charge.
I just thought this washing machine was washing clothes poorly.
