Great video, saved me a couple of bucks. I will not bother with this stone as its around $45 in Sweden and it seems to provide a dollar store edge. My prefered stone so far is the Fällkniven DC4. There are two versions of that stone and I had both. One diamond/ceramic and one ceramic/fine ceramic. The diamond/ceramic stone cracked when I dropped it so what I did was remove the diamond plate from the stone, then added it to the ceramic/fine stones as its only a millimeter or so thick. I then took the shards and reshaped them by grinding them against concrete and a low quality bench stone to get a small stone for my leatherman sheath. I even rounded the stone on one side to accomodate serrations. Good stuff.
@@bjornegan6421 Hey! No problems. The diamond side looks a bit worn but it still works really well. The ceramic side has clogged up a couple of times but I use a rubber eraser to clean it up. The stone is still perfectly flat. Its still my most used sharpening tool.
For heavy work oil should help. The ceramic will load slower and the coarse side will cut with less friction. If the ceramic side is too fine you can lap it with something coarse. I have the older ceramic/ceramic double stuff and I keep the medium ceramic rough by rubbing it against coarse stones. One of my favorite finishing tools. You got some pretty good results.
You make it look easy Bear, I’m a beginner and I’m have trouble sharpening on stones while keeping the angle to maintain the factory bevel. Any tips lol
Good overview of the doublestuff I've just got the new falkniven cc4 and it's lacking a good diamond stone, but I think the two together might just make the perfect twosome.atb paddy
I almost had a panic attack watching thinking you were gonna cut your finger off.. That said.. You sir, are very well trained and I enjoyed this video. Lol subbed
I'm new to sharpening, I've got a ka-bar bk7 was wondering if you had a recommendation for stone to keep it sharp for use while backpack camping for a week or two.
that ceramic will put an amazing hair popping edge. im sure if you had cleaned the stone it would have fixed more of coarse cbn side. the in the hand technique only allows for use of small fraction of the stone and they cut fairly fast and load fast.
hi, first: thank you so much for your videos, I really enjoy them and learned so much about sharpening and steels. is the fine side on this spyderco stone similar to the fällkniven CC4 ( I think it's 0.1 micron)? thank you and best regards Fabian P.S. are you already selling knives? I have to have one ;-)
Good stuff sir. If the cbn were around a 600-800 grit I think it would give the dc4 a good run for the money. If it breaks in that much it will be very nice for you. I think I might have to pick one up now. Thanks for the vid bro. 👍😎👍
Finally got my maxamanix, just ordered some cbn rods for my sharpmaker. Would you recommend the double stuff 1 or 2, my other knives are much softer steels. Thanks for all the vids on maxamet, really helped in my decision to get maxamet.
Impressive performance on Maxamet. Watching you dull that edge at the beginning was cringeworthy. Will be interesting if you get better performance over time w/ break-in on the CBN. Gonna put some compound on the carry pouch for stropping?
GPKNIVES haha right? If it wasn't for UA-cam my knives would stay sharp forever haha, yeah we'll see what happens, I thought about putting the compound on it. Maybe I'll use the emulsion over the spray to stiffen the suade a bit
Does the job with fine Eze lap diamond as it's grit is lower than medium on double stuff, can repair or sharpen easy within few minutes even s35vn, 2 pouches with stones and that's all ya need :D
Parts 795 I prefer this, fit in my pocket better. I really like the worksharp though and I would recommend it over this for newer dudes. It has two diamond grits and a strop too, good stuff man. Just too bulky for my pants pocket unless I'm rockin' cargo pants
So I sharpen my maxamet pm2 on my kme. They front gets sharp, but the heel stays raggedy under magnification youcan see little chips. I don’t get it i tried pressure / no pressure. Moving the blade position etc. like I said the front gets sharp , so idk. Any help would be appreciated. I spent like 8 hrs on this damn knife
Big Brown Bear yeah I’m doing the sharpie trick. The part I don’t understand is that the front half gets sharp, but the heel is dull and I do the same process on the whole blade. It’s driving me crazy
Could not agree more re the grits. They need the original medium/fine double stuff and a CBN either single or double grit. But coarse CBN to fine ceramic is a bridge too far.
BBB - Do you ever use any lubricant (water) on your double stuff 2 or original ceramic double stuff? Or do you always use them dry? Just curious. Thanks brother!
Still never picked one of these up. But by this vid I think I’d stick with the original or my dc4. To me it looks like the dc4 diamond is better then this. But the ceramic is probably better on this

haha whats funny is that the DB2 is my most used pocket stone. The CBN broke in nicely and I really like the trapezoid shape so I can use the corners
Big Brown Bear Hmm, might not count it out just yet then. I really like how it could be used on blades with an inwards curve.
@@TheKimjoh560 Hey, 3 years later, is there any issues with your DC4?

Did it “mellow out” over time?

paddys potato peelers Yea man that's probably the stone I want.
Well, thanks for sharing your input on the cbn stone. Think im going to get one.
Steven Banter nice remember it will be crazy coarse out of box, then it will break in to a sweet spot and eventually it dies
I almost had a panic attack watching thinking you were gonna cut your finger off.. That said.. You sir, are very well trained and I enjoyed this video. Lol subbed

this stone
Impressive how long that took to dull

👍😎👍
The edge in the beginning was diamond water stones?
crf450r bullet david yes, 3k finish
Would the combo of the small dmt coarse and a Spyderco double stuff (original) be a better touch up sharpener?
...maybe try the Falkniven CC-4, see what you think...have a great week

Thanks for the video man. I appreciate it.
Sadistically Sharp I hope so, I had to dull that gorgeous edge just for you XD
Lol
great vid Shawn! CBN is something though pretty much analogous to diamond.
Double stuff 2 may take the place of my DC-4
KBF It will cut faster then the DC4 diamond side.
It's a cool stone, I love it and hate it at the same time hahaha
I bet it would be better for more basic steels like 420 and 1095.
Just got my Maxamet Native 5 in the mail, and watching you dull your blade on that stone physically made me ill.
Cody Williamson hahhaha
Cody Williamson the shit I do for you guys xD
You can remove the burr easier with edge leading strokes
the edge quality is better with edge trailing if you can hit the angles

Big brown, which do you prefer, the double stuff or work sharp field sharpner?

Sorry if I'm bothering you so much but what is your favorite pocket sharpener?
Chris Mccarthy double stuff 2 haha
What do you use to clear out the build up?
barkeepersfriend.
Big Brown Bear Thanks! How often do you find it necessary? Every use? Every couple of uses?

sharpie it bruh, see what your hitting, also avoid going under 300 grit

Ya, tearout

I use em dry.
I would put it on a block of wood and use it like a real bench stone you would just need nails to hold it in place
bp69 nah, I'd rather just use a bench stone. I have used it on the suade pouch to keep it from slipping
Still never picked one of these up. But by this vid I think I’d stick with the original or my dc4. To me it looks like the dc4 diamond is better then this. But the ceramic is probably better on this
Put some 3.5 micron diamond on the case to strop
Great content though
I just cant believe you ruined a polished edge on maxamet. Maby something cheaper. Makes me want to say,,, WTF!!!! LOL
Steven Banter it's Bullshit fam haha
