A movie it is impossible to dislike. Disney added stuff for drama, though - in real life the Jamaicans faced no discrimination from the other teams - in fact they all supported them and purchased their sled for them.

Swiss here. This film is also very popular here in Switzerland. Especially because our team is so prominently featured in the film. Fun fact: 25 years ago (man, am I old...) the brakewoman of the Swiss doubles bobsleigh team was my coworker. In fact, they were training together with the Jamaican men's team at the time. Not the one shown in the film, but a later one.

It was the end of sixth grade, and we were having a party with all of the classrooms in our year.
One of the events was an auction where we were allowed to spend the imaginary points we had earned throughout the year.
I bid all of my points on a large "cool runnings" poster for my bedroom 😅
And then all of the teachers made me give the poster to my friend Romney who I had out bid by quite a bit.
She was crying and she was upset. I think they wanted her to have it for some obvious reasons - you don't think about these things when you're a kid.
I was disappointed because I love the movie and I really wanted the poster, but Romney was really cool and I admired her athleticism / personality.
I don't remember when I got in exchange for the poster, but I do remember how happy she was to receive it. 😊
I can't watch this movie now without thinking of my friend from all those years ago. Absolutely priceless.

Man, the guys in this movie had the comedy, the chemistry and the charisma down, and they really make the audience feel like we felt when we were rooting for the actual team, in the late 80s! Also, gorgeously filmed by Disney, with that warm, colorful "live action feature" look Disney always had, and which fits this movie/story perfectly, especially the Jamaican sections. I never noticed that when I saw it way back. Unless it had some wild, weird camera angle or unusual cutting, I would take cinematography like this for granted. Thanks again, Shadowcat! This was such a great surprise! I NEVER know what you're going to react to next, and I love that.

Not-so-fun fact: the bridge, where the coach has a bunch of snowballs lined up to throw at his team but they hit him first with their own snowballs, was EXTREMELY popular in Calgary because of the way it swayed as you took each step - but it was sadly destroyed in the 2013 Flood Of The Century.

It was one of the few movies we had on VHS that I'd watch on repeat when I was sick. I've seen it SO many times 😂 My family would quote the "Sanka ya dead? Oh, Shadowcat what a special reaction!!! This commentary will never be bettered! I learned so much! And I remember when this happened! (not just the movie, the actual story!) Jamaican-Canadian, what a heritage!!! You are a child of the sun and the snow!!!! You are north and south! I have affection and gratitude for both countries, just for the litany of incredible musicians to come out of both! You must be super proud, the list is endless! And Canada's no slouch for famous actors and comedy legends, either, which brings me to......... this movie has John Candy! From SCTV! What could be more Canadian than that?!!! I totally forgot!! I was just thinking about this movie yesterday at the skate rink because someone tried questioning my teaching methods with two new skaters to trios and trains. We were in the middle of the rink (safest spot) and stationary, practicing how to link our arms and switch sides comfortably, when the boyfriend of one of the skaters with me interrupted us to tell us “y’all should be moving” and I stopped him with a “thank you for your input, I’ll let you know if we have questions,” because I did not ask for his advice, nor did we need or want it at that moment. Later on I thought about the scene where they’re sitting in the bobsled practicing shifting their weight and responding to calls accurately, since that exactly what we were doing.

There’s another film around the same Olympics, Eddie The Eagle. As a ski jumping nerd there’s a lot wrong but it’s really fun.

8:17 Overall, this movie is based on the inauguration of the Jamaican bobsled team, but they've taken _some_ literary license. One of them is this guy.
The members of the inaugural Jamaican bobsled team were Dudley Stokes, Michael White, Devon Harris and Chris Stokes. None of them were named Yul Brenner. Yul Brynner (different spelling) was a Russian actor who passed away in 1985. Yul Brenner was _not_ a Jamaican athlete who competed in the 1988 Olympic Winter Games.

You can actually try bobsledding in Calgary at the old Olympic park.

I'm _really_ dating myself, here, but I was 15 when I first saw this, in theaters. It was an _amazing movie._
It surprised me, recently, when I went to the local library where I was living at the time in search of it and they didn't have it. The librarian said she had never heard of it, but she ordered it, and when it came in, she seemed very impressed with it and puzzled that she had not heard of it before.
When it came out, one of the critics that saw it described it as being, "like _Rocky_ on ice." But since then, the _Rocky_ franchise has gone on to be _incredibly_ well known while this movie has turned out to be largely _forgotten._ 🤷‍♂

It has not been largely forgotten. One person not knowing it doesn't make it forgotten.

No, see. I'm not talking about that single _librarian._ I'm talking about the fact that this film was not available in the local public _library._ So apparently, since it came out, _no_ one went to that library in _search_ of it. No one until _I_ did.

There is also a making of and the real Jamaican Team recollection of the events on UA-cam. Obviously this is a story and not real, but the factual events are great too
