I'm 5'11 240lbs I just got my ice skates sharpened at 1/2 I looked at the chart and wanted to do 7/16 not sure what the difference would be at all... went with 1/2 I'm pretty sure the guy did it for $3 less cause I picked 1/2 and not 7/16...I'm a recreational skater haven't played any hockey other than on a tennis court with rollerblades when I was 12-13 yrs old
I’m just a fun skater and love drifting. My usual preference is 1”. But as opposed to what’s been said in many websites, my 1” hollow edge wears out much quicker than when I sharpened it 5/8” I tried flat bottom once and right after resharpened to 1”. These are awful lot different when fresh. But after several hours of intense stopping and carving, 1” just gets as dull as flat bottom. This kind of grip loss never happens with 1/2”. Perhaps the rule doesn’t go all the way across different hollow depth.
1/2 or 3/8 Is what I usually got for and swap between the two based on how into the season we are like you noted. I have rarely average speed, but for my height and weight I like to rely on agility and quick cuts to get away from defenders and open up space to make plays. I personally don't even really feel much of a difference with gliding on a 3/8 vs a 5/8 anyways. The extra agility though with a sharper skate I think is way more noticeable and important. For my play style at least.
I'm a good skater but always looking for more speed. I've used 5/8's almost my whole life, would 3/4" be something to try to see if I can get more speed?
Great video 👍 what c cut do you recommend for a seven-year-old and nine-year-old who are very fast skaters but need work with the puck..lol both are girls Thanks 🙏
I’ve always used 5/8ths I tried a 1” and could glide forever but couldn’t make good cuts and I tried 3/8th for the hell of it and my lazy style of play now doesn’t allow enough coasting 😂 5/8ths for life!
So in the footage of you doing drills through the second half of the video, what radius hollow are you using? You don't seem to mention this unless I'm missing something :s
The Spark variant is called "FIRE" rings. ie it has a flat bottom and similar V edges. The Hybrid design is old ie 1983. Harry Redmond with US Patent 4392658 covered the design, ie sharp edges flat bottom. Blackstone came out with the Flat bottom Vee after the Redmond patent ran out, ie 2 decades later.
The riddle is Most all folks who play hockey are not in the NHL, ie about 1 in 1000 play in the NHL the rest do not! :) In the USA alone the USA Hockey number of players was 542,583 in 2016
Hey boys, question got a new pair of skates and today, tried to stop and almost broke my ass! had them sharpened at a sports store, not a hockey shop would hollow affect my stopping? I am a good skater, so please help me out, thanks boys
what about profiling your blade? I m skating on a quad radius and its a game changer from the single or doubles we are used to. I m surprised there is not more info on this?
the rink I play in usually has softer ice and I'm 200 pounds so would 3/4 be ok for me? I'm more of a get outside on the defender and use my speed to blow past him.
I’ve been liking the 5/8 compared to half inch but I’ve noticed I can’t cut a punch turn anymore or turn fast without losing balance or falling entirely. I want to try 9/16 and see if that’ll be the sweet spot between a 1/2 and 5/8
@@PavelBarber they might be dull. I do skate 5+ times a week and only sharpen them every 2-3 weeks since it’s a 1.5-2 hour drive to get them sharpened. I play so much I really need a Sparx but works really slow atm. Was making ok money but now it’s $50-75 a day. Hoping it picks up so I can get one. I’m going to try 9/16 next go around and see if that’s a sweet middle ground between the two.
Pavel Barber.... I've seen your video on the Marsblade as well as other players who have tried them. I've heard alot about the benefits but could you tell us some of the down side or trade offs?
For me it's tough to say. I was testing a pair that was 1 size too big (they didn't have my size because I have tiny feet). My only concern is if it effects acceleration speed right now. I don't want to make any claims yet on my encounter with them because I was only on them once and it does take some getting used to, and they were too big and a longer runner will slow down acceleration. On turns it felt great. They're a bit heavier. Will it effect peoples abilities to pick up their feet faster? If top speed is increased that's great, but if that comes at the cost of acceleration speed then there would be a problem. Only time will tell. I felt very good on them my first time and I'm excited to try them more!
I got a half inch done for the first time and now I can't stop on my left side. Pretty sure its because the guy didn't evenly sharpen the skates. The bite on my left skate is insane though.
@chuck taylor Radius is personal preference depending on whether you like more aggressive forward lean or more of a neutral pitch. For sharper quicker turning, 9 foot radius is typically chosen. For more neutral balance, 10 foot radius is typically chosen. For the most blade being in contact with the ice, 11 foot radius is typically chosen as it allows for more power on your strides but this also means you won't be able to make turns that are anywhere near as quick or sharp as you would in a 9 foot radius. As far as blade hollow is concerned (how sharp your blades are), if you are a big 230 lb guy, I would suggest getting your blades sharpened at either 5/8ths or 11/16ths for maximum glide and speed on the ice. The heavier you are, the further into the ice you will sink if your blade hollow is too deep (aka too sharp). You can also hoose to adjust your blade hollow depending on the ice conditions of where you are playing. Harder ice will require a sharper hollow to maintain better bite on your edges while softer ice in a warmer rink may require a shallower hollow to compensate.
Hey, I weigh 120 pounds and I'm about 6 ft tall. I'm a dynamic player and need much bite because im quite light. Which profile and hollow would you recommend?
I'm your biggest fan legend says it you will pin the comment

He did it
So much good info! Great vid Pavs 👊
Thank Jeremy!
Love my Sparx machine best investment I ever made consistently every sharpening no more worries if my skates are going to be cut right.
Came here for the sparx info yet the drills at the end was my favorite part.
I’m 5” 11” 225 lbs and use 1/2 hollow in Spring/Summer and use 7/16 in Winter when ice is harder I’m happy with that.
I'm just a kid but play AAA and I'm 5"5 and get 7/16 all year long

I've been back and fourth with half or flat bottom v. I'm done with flat bottom v. I barely had an edge last night

that's more of a *SOSS*
My lef ear enjoyed this video
I always get mine sharpened to 3/8"
Who’s here in 2024! Saw you in ottawa not to long ago. Still a great video!
I'm a good skater but always looking for more speed. I've used 5/8's almost my whole life, would 3/4" be something to try to see if I can get more speed?
@4:06 "man, why did I have to get the same stick time with this show off skater filming himself !!!"
Thanks for the insight... never thought about sharpening this way, hopefully it will improve my game :)
I’m thinking about going from 5/8 to 1/2 inch for a little more grip
what sharpening do you use in this vid?

The different drill compilation was geat at the end.
What do you think of flat bottom V ? Once I went with it, I never went back.
So in the footage of you doing drills through the second half of the video, what radius hollow are you using? You don't seem to mention this unless I'm missing something :s
Are you using a single radius? 11" or 9"?
No mention of flat bottom V?

With the Sparx here I use a 5/8 inch (16mm) Fire ring for Hockey skates myself and sometimes the 1/2 inch Fire ring too.

Pavil you are my favourite floor ball hockey player And your how to goalie videos are so funny
Nice video! Thanks for the info. Sparx looks great.

You shouldn't really be lacking in a punch turn from going to a 5/8ths. Unless they are dull, that definitely doesn't take that skill away.

Have you ever tried a 7/16 cut, because I feel like for my weight and play style a 3/8 cut is too sharp but a 1/2 feels dull
Great vid! Could you review your True skates?
Skate should be facing right when put in sharpener?
Why are you not using the marsblades?
This video was shot before using the Marsblade.
I'm also waiting for Marsblade to send me a pair that fits better. The ones I used were 1 size too big
Pavel Barber.... I've seen your video on the Marsblade as well as other players who have tried them. I've heard alot about the benefits but could you tell us some of the down side or trade offs?
... BTW I participated in the kickstart and hoping to see my pair next summer

Your skating did look a little less stable in the video. Like a person in a new/different skate.
If Crosby is sharpening in between a period.it’s an important thing for a player to decide
Very helpful. Thanks!
Didn't know we could use the Doug Mitchell arena for stick n puck. Or do you just have friends in the Thunderbirds organization?
I got a half inch done for the first time and now I can't stop on my left side. Pretty sure its because the guy didn't evenly sharpen the skates. The bite on my left skate is insane though.
Lazyyy the guy probably fucked up or went to fast or something. I always for for 1/2 or 3/8 and rarely have those problems.
Yeah he definitely did, it was only a 5 dollar skate job so its fine tho.
What cut do you use?
I can hardly hear you though is your mic in the right arena?
Does it do flat bottom V
my left ear enjoyed this
Half bottom V?
This helps me,thanks
susioni suomi suomi
I go 7/16, I’m not very heavy only 142lbs
those jumping stops into backwards crossovers look so stupid, i burst out laughing when he first jumped, never seen that drill (new to hockey btw)
What skate sharpening do you use?
9/16 is the sweet spot
Hey Pavel , sorry to bother you bro . But I often times overthink . I am 230 lbs and I play D . What radius do you recommend
@chuck taylor

try a 2" radius and a diet and ask again in a month
I usually go in to PureHockey and get a “standard” sharpening... If I basically want the least bite, would 1” hollow be better than standard?
3/8 cut for me boys
Is it me, or only one speaker is firing.
Hey, I weigh 120 pounds and I'm about 6 ft tall. I'm a dynamic player and need much bite because im quite light. Which profile and hollow would you recommend?
Food.
Hi
I thought my headphones were broken lol...
Same
2:12
Which one would be good for defence?
Dawson Boland I use a half inch on defense, it gives you a good amount of speed and grip on the ice
Dawson Boland yeah I find 1/2 for defense I find it a bit better cuz you transition a bit more than a forward
1/2 inch. 1 and 3/4 are for finesse offense man
Thanks
MY LEFT EAR ENJOYED THIS () MY RIGHT DID NOT
