How about the opposite concept. My mother used to say, “We’re too poor to buy cheap’. To her this meant that buying a quality timeless item was really worth it. For example when I was 22 I bought an expensive classic cashmere wool plaid suit coat. My mother helped me buy it, saying that I would wear it a lifetime. Now I am 62 and I still wear this little jacket and still love it. When I bought it I thought it was too much money, but over the decades it has been a super value of quality and style.
I haven’t watched her in a while but generally what you said is what she advocates for
I agree 100%. I’m the same age as you and I bought cashmere coats when I was young and I have kept them in immaculate condition. Both are wrap coats so when I gained a little weight I can still wear them. I don’t wear them everyday, but when I wear them, someone usually gives a compliment .
Remember the name ( designer) brand doesn’t guarantee best quality anymore. That was true in 70’s and 80’s ,but now you need to be very careful what you buy.
That’s amazing!
My mother is the same way! She refused to buy cheaply made kitchen wear. She said that exact thing; Too poor to buy cheap haha!
My mother use to say to me regarding high-end designer logo items, “are they paying you to advertise for them?” 😂. I like being discreet.
My mom usually says “are you buying the product or are you buying it because of the brand”
Money talks…wealth whispers….yup
@Melissa Newell I love that saying. It’s so true.
That’s how I see it too. I prefer understated designs
So did mine! Also anything with holes in it she would say “ there’s the rest of it ? I’m not paying for half of a garment”!
After buying a ton of luxury sunglasses, I’ve learned that the quality isn’t as good as companies that specialize in just sunglasses. My friend who works at the optometrist warned me that Tom Ford glasses are poor quality.
Yes I think this is true. I bought some regular glasses from Tom Ford and while they look nice, the metal elements are full of nickel and leave me with red irritated skin on the bridge of my nose.
I've owned Tom Ford glasses for years and they're really nice. I've had other brands and I could tell the difference. I love Tom Fords and don't think they are poor quality. Just my opinion.
I had a friend who made eye/sunglasses in italy for famous brands and she laughed at people who spent that much money on them when she knew that it’s nothing special.
As a glass wearer for 15 years that's the first thing I researched when looking for my first eyeglasses back then and I've always followed that and tell it to everybody too.
Yup..I’ve wasted money on luxury sunglasses but .now I stick to Maui Jims!
I won’t waste my money on synthetic fabrics anymore. If it’s not cotton, linen, silk, wool, etc I just know it’s not going to feel good and breathe well. A thought on the tailoring bit: I usually spend more on items I know I need tailored, as I know it’s an investment that will return in cost per wear. Why spend the money to get H&M trousers tailored when they will likely only last a few seasons? Where as my J Crew trousers I had perfectly fitted will serve me well for years to come!
I am the same way with fabric! I can barely tolerate blends. Why waste money on plastic spun into a fabric or even worse, sprayed onto a mold to mimic fabric texture? Its not worth the money if it's not made with natural fibers. Especially if you live in a hot climate where those plastic summer clothes will be the death of you, to say nothing of the skin rashes and break outs! And the sweaters made from polyester indoors make you hot and uncomfortable, and outdoors they provide no insulation and you freeze!
I also agree with trousers as well, but you can definitely find 40$ wool trousers! Better than H&M garbage. I have a light colored pair from talbots that are an all season wool wear and I love them to death.
@@jjh8367 being 5’9 with a 26 inch waist means every single pair of pants I own takes a trip to the tailor 😭😭
It gets difficult if you look at the ethics - neither H&M and Uniqlo (not sure about them)pay min wages and sneaked out of payments during pandemic for work alreay done my lots of mostly women.
So true. Save up buy quality, pieces and you only cry once...😝
Liked your tips. Uncomfortable shoes are not worth it. A travel hints and budget video would be great. The only time I was in first class was for the last hour of a trip after I had provided medical assistance to someone.
Nice video I won't stop being her fan spending money on products that don't Worth it is just a waste of money

Yes, please make a travel budget video.
1. Designer goods without the quality to back them up
2. Fancy things you can only wear one time
3. Expensive clothing that doesn't fit and needs to be tailored
4. First class tickets
5. Designer shoes that are uncomfortable
These lists are helpful on boring videos with obnoxious presenters who never get to the point. However, Audrey is a joy and her videos are lovely, so I don’t want a shortcut. It’s a pleasure to spend time with her, listening to her melodious voice, enjoying the visuals, watching the whole thing.
Thank you for posting a summary! I'm a visual learner and I appreciate reading the recap after I watch the video. I just don't remember them people tell me (audio) without seeing it.
PS: I don't buy any of these things!
I always appreciate when someone lists the items. It's just nice.
I enjoy how you incorporate shades of green in your wardrobe! I like to wear green and you provide wonderful inspiration.
I've migrated from buying basics at HM to buying them at Uniqlo and I feel like there's a world of difference between those two brands and their quality and overall appeal. Even their cashmere sweaters ($100.00) feel timeless. Same with their cashmere/wool coats ($150.00).
Uniqlo is amazing I have sweaters I bought from them 5 years ago and they still look brand new
@@prag3037 i still have mine too that I bought 10 years ago! really good quality
I think it might be geographic but where I live Uniqlo doesn't offer my size :( It's so disappointing because I've only heard super good things about them!
It gets difficult if you look at the ethics - neither H&M and Uniqlo (not sure about them)pay min wages and sneaked out of payments during pandemic for work alreay done my lots of mostly women.
I like to spend money on good skincare but am happy to use drugstore ‘colours’ eg blusher, eyeshadow, eyebrow colour etc. Also, I don’t buy expensive make up brush cleaner, I find mild baby shampoo does just as good a job at a fraction of the cost. Love your videos Audrey, they have helped me a lot with my wardrobe .
We once went first class to Paris on Air France because I got a good offer from them five days before the flight and it was my husband’s first time to Paris. It was heaven! We’ll probably never afford that again, but what a lovely memory. The food! The service! The toiletries in the enormous rest room! Sleeping under the down duvet and actually feeling like humans when we arrived! Priceless.
I completely agree with everything you talked about, it’s not new concepts, however it’s helpful to be reminded. Thank you for sharing.
Yes to a in depth travel tips videos! I love travelling too! Agree with all your "not worth the money" items! I am older now and I stopped lusting after all the designer bags that I use to aspire to buy when I was younger! I now think that some prices are absolutely insane for a piece of clothing or accessory. We need more contents showing good quality, good design pieces without big names attached and some content showing what other things you can do if you have a few hundred or thousand dollars to spend.
I was thinking of you today, Audrey! I went out to return some shoes I ordered online that weren't up to snuff, and rather than my usual inclination to shop at other nearby stores, I thought of the Thursday Boots I now intend to order instead and headed straight for my car! I was quite proud to think how freeing it has been to have SO many choices eliminated for what I bring into my home! As you have helped me to further hone my wardrobe, I have been dismayed to find how many items I still have that will eventually need to go, but what I have learned is so valuable, I know after this there will be far fewer instances now that I have an intentional plan! Thank you for all you have shared with us!
Love your videos! Yes, a travel video: packing, traveling, airline and destination with your appealing style all though.
I do buy a first class ticket for the one vacation I take a year. It's a long flight and I'm older now so most of a day of travel that is uncomfortable isn't fun at all. As soon as I step out the door to be driven to the airport I am vacationing! So for me first class is worth it. It saves me time and sanity. To me its like buying higher quality items. If I traveled frequently or short distances it would be different.
I'm guilty of overspending on occasion dresses, but I'm slowly learning to choose luxurious materials (silk, for example) in timeless silhouettes that I can change the look of by accessorizing. On the other hand, I've been a long proponent of buying excellent shoes and handbags, and I often buy those directly from leather artisans---no logos or middlemen mark ups. The "expensive" price I might pay goes directly to someone with true craftsmanship and pride in their work, not to advertise a mass-produced item for which workers were paid a misery to make.
"I often buy those directly from leather artisans--- no logos or middlemen mark ups. The "expensive" price I might pay goes directly to someone with true craftsmanship and pride in their work, not to advertise a mass-produced item for which workers were paid a misery to make" -- I really like that, Irai. Very good choice in consumership style.
I don’t buy expensive sweaters made from cheap materials - like cotton, acrylic, or polyester. I am a hand-knitter/crocheter, and I can make them so much prettier with a higher-quality fiber, like wool or cashmere, for the same price. Cashmere is wool, lol. Alpaca! Plus, I’m much more likely to hang onto those items longer because I made them and I love the finished project so much, as well as the journey to get there.
I just polished and brushed my shoes yesterday! I always think about your tips while purchasing. I cant help but notice everytime how your fabrics lay and the stitching holds up the clothes in such an elegant way. It is very noticeable how you care about your clothes and you're a massive inspiration to me. Thank you for the wisdom♥️♥️
“Putting my money to marketing & PR is not where I would like to see it returned to.” Audrey, where would we be without you?!!! 💕💕💕💕💕
I avoid designer goods with conspicuous logos because I don’t believe in paying for the privilege of advertising a brand.
Well said.
Exactly! My mother calls it unpaid advertising. She never let us wear logos and I've carried that tradition into adulthood.
I’ve never thought of it that way, thanks!
AMEN!!!
I personally think it’s tacky. Announcing to the world how much money you spent.
YES!! I agree with you on the designer items. I actually avoid items with logos. For some reason, that really bothers me. I'd love a travel budgeting video. Also, I know you have done tailoring videos, but could you talk sometime about specifically what/where/how in tailoring do you get the most value? And, how to tell when something is worth buying if you can get it tailored? I've only had a couple of items tailored more recently and it's made a big difference, but I still am not sure what to tailor/how to have it tailored to fit right. Thanks.
Definitely a travel video! I, like you, travel "on the cheap", but expend on experiences once I get to my location.
Pictures, memories, and good company are the value of a trip.
Such a great video! Your outfit and hair are totally stunning x
Cool video I have a suggestion for you.
We’re are completely aligned except whenever I can I go first class I travel so much for work the little luxury pays off big time for me! Your hair looks fab, AGAIN! Thank you for the inspiration!
I would love to hear your thoughts and tips for travel. The planning and anticipation is part of the adventure. It also occured to me that your well thought out content is timeless. I've found myself going back to some of your older topics and found value and appreciated them all over again.💞
I agree with everything Audrey except the plane ticket. The year 2018 my husband started working in a different place and I flew over at least twice a month. There was no direct flight connecting us so it was a 4 planes ordeal each time. I was so irritated and almost always so upset when I finally reached home that it spoiled the entire thing. Now every time I can afford it, I will get that first class ticket. I am scarred and PTSDed after almost a full year of abuse in that cabine 😔
I hear that! Pre-Covid I flew overseas for business at least 3 x per yr. These were 18 hrs in air plus 2 layovers. I can deal w/ 4 hr flights but If you can budget and afford 1st class for an overseas flight, it is totally worth it if you have to make that flight more than once.
I spend my money irresponsibly and I have no plans to change. I'm just here because this lady has the most relaxing voice ever 😂
Ha! Me too. She had the dreamiest voice...:
I used to agree with you regarding flight tickets but after two, fifteen hour flights in one year, in coach (prior to lockdown) in my sixties, I've changed my mind. I'd rather take fewer trips and arrive at my destination ready to function as a human. It enhances my trip.
Likewise. Remember the days when airlines treated all passengers like people and not like sardines to be packed into a can? I used to have no issue with business or standard tickets but with age, like you, I'll pay more to have a less uncomfortable flight on longer trips
@@littleninja71, Yes. I remember when the flight was part of the fun. It's a distant memory.
I would also like to throw in as well, if you try to get the cheapo flights that have extensive layovers.... You've now traded your time for money. Not to mention the snacks you may be temped to buy or even have to spend money on a hotel! I say buy the ticket that makes sense, regardless of price.
Agreed! I never do layovers ❤️
Me too. I’m taller and bigger and will always make sure we have comfortable seats. For longhauls I’ll by the best tickets early to make sure.
Love a video on budgeting for travel and ways to become more travel savvy👍🙌
Oh the shoe thing, yes! 🙌🏻 Nothing worse than an ill fitting pair of shoes. I’d love a video about budgeting for a trip, thanks Audrey!
I would add expensive cosmetics (not including skincare) to the list. For me, drugstore mascaras, eyeshadows, eye liner, blush, etc. have always been just fine or better than their counterparts from Sephora or Ulta.
I agree completely. I even made several experiments, buying an expensive makeup item from Sephora and at the same time buying their drugstore counterpart. The results were as you have said: just fine or better than the expensive products. I even put this to the test with other people (friends and my boyfriend) I ask them (wearing two lipsticks from similar shades) what do you think is the drugstore lipstick and what is the one who is super expensive, and I swear all of them told me that the expensive lipstick was the drugstore one 😂
For me, I’ve found that but so much less makeup from curiosity if there’s something better out there (FOMO) when I just buy the nice stuff that I really like. So in the end, while I spent more per item on makeup from a prestige brand, I’m much more likely to use it all up and purchase less.
Hmmm “they’re real” benefits mascara at $30 is better than any other mascara I have ever tried.
@@princessirulancorrino4695 I find this to not be accurate especially with lipstick. Other makeup perhaps but lipstick from the drugstore just doesn’t work for me.
I definitely agree! Also natural things like coconut oil can be used to remove make up, condition hair & skin❣️
Yes, would definitely appreciate a video on how you budget your travel expenses.❤️
The travel budget video would be super useful
Hi Audrey!! I would highly appreciate a travel budget video. You appear to be the best person to offer advice. Thank you for this topic. It was essential. In fact, thank you for all your videos. Since watching your videos last year, my approach to my wardrobe, speech (tone, volume and overall sounding softer) and and shoe care has changed drastically. Thank you for making use of this platform, it has changed my life in ways unimaginable. Your personhood and character has become an attribute I am personally trying to adapt into my life and you such an inspiration to me as a now 23 (will be 24 in December) year old.
I love your hair Audrey...thank you for always saving me money, yet helping me to maintain my curated closet. You're a huge resource!
Traveling videos sound good
I would add not to be persuaded by a shop assistant that a garment that is not your colour will suddenly suit you by adding a scarf in your colour or the right jewellery. Either the colour suits or it does not. I don't look at garments that are not available in a colour that suits me. I would love to see the travel video.
Great video, Audrey! I agree with you on uncomfortable expensive shoes. Nothing worse! First class travel, however, is preferred when traveling overseas (if one can afford it). When I am on a plane for 9 hours, I see it a part of my trip. If I am relatively rested and sane getting off the plane, it’s important. So flying 5 hours plus will trigger first class for me. Flying to Bermuda from the East Coast (barely 2 hours) first class, on the other hand, was pretty dumb. It was basically first 3 rows of the plane🙄.
Audrey, I’m a new subscriber and am so happy I stumbled across your channel! This video was wonderful and, YES, I would definitely be interested in a budget-friendly travel video. I love traveling and have three upcoming trips over the next year. 😀
Yes, please. A travel video.
Thank you very much for your video! Learning from you about travel planning and budgeting would be helpful indeed!
Hi, Audrey. I think the coloration (clothing and makeup) you're wearing in this video suit you beautifully. These clear spring colors really brighten you up.
Love this. And YES, I would LOVE to see a travel video you could put together re: budgeting!
This video was just suggested on my home page and WOW, your voice is so calming. I loved watching this and would definitely watch a travel budget video!
Thank you for another great video, Audrey. As always, your advice is spot-on. I would love to hear your recommendations on budgeting for travel. Hope to see that video in the near future.
Another thing to keep in mind: most women will gain and/or lose weight over the course of a life time, or they will be pregnant and the body shape changes. A lot of what you buy in your twenties won’t make it through your life changes as far as fit but also styling is concerned. So for first class tickets: that depends upon how long the trip is and whether you have health issues related to circulation etc. A fifteen hour trip to the Far East in a less than first class seat makes a gigantic difference in your well being when you arrive. If you can afford it, a first class seat on a long air flight is well worth the money.
I totally agree - especially as I get older and all the little aches and pains start to catch up. Any domestic or short international flight longer than 4 hours or so: premium economy. Business class for a really long -haul flight (e.g. to Asia, Africa, South America, or Australia; been to two, the other two are on my list). The ticket costs what it costs. I either include it in my overall budget for the trip or I wait to take the trip until I can afford the fare.
I haven't traveled a ton, but I am 5'11" and have definitely been *so* uncomfortable at times that I dread the thought of any long flight (flights I do hope to make in my life!) so I can totally see the value of paying a bit more at times! I appreciate hearing others advocate for it with those things in mind!
A lot of my clothes that I bought when I was in my 20s and 30s my daughter can enjoy now (I’m 50 now), sometimes I can still fit in my favorite classics and jeans, too 😁
I completely agree about body shape changing! They say your body changes every 7 years and I can definitely attest to that. At 21 I lost the puppy fat look you can have in your late teens and my all features sharpened a little. At 28 my body changed again, probably subtle to everyone else, but felt like a huge change for me, my back got a lot broader than it used to be and all my lovely dresses (some beautiful vintage ones) that I had invested in and loved wearing suddenly wouldn't fit anymore and also looked wrong on me somehow. It's sad but true that your body changes and what used to look good on you may no longer work, which forces your style to change somewhat too.
First class makes all the difference on any flight for me. The more comfortable I am while traveling any distance the less stressed and anxious I feel. Well worth the $ for me.
I found your Tailoring 101 video extremely helpful, so thank you for posting it. I also wonder if you could do a before-and-after tailoring video; I'm sure I'm not alone when I wonder, "What exactly might a tailor do for me?" It's very normal to buy and wear mass-produced clothing off the rack, and that's the look we are accustomed to seeing on others and on ourselves; understanding what kind of room there is for improvement is a fairly new idea to many of us. I value your insight on this channel and recommend you to all my friends! :)
I would love to see a travel video! I'm hoping to do extensive travel in the near future. For me, at 70 years old, first class is a must for 10 hr plus trips. I can handle anything under that, but have found the cost for comfort to be well worth it. We are all different! Love your videos, your style and your voice!
Could not agree with you more, I am the shortest in my family at 5'9", my husband is 6'3", my daughter at 6'1" and my son at 6'4" we need the legroom for International travel...wish we could spend it elsewhere.
@@sweetcompanyof479 same here. 5’9” Migraines and neck issues. There’s no way I’m sitting in an economy seat. You have to be child-size these days to sit economy. I am so much happier splurging for comfort!
Love all your content. A travel budget video would be great! I am looking at traveling with my husband for our anniversary next year. Thank you!
Hi Audrey, Love your videos so I want to throw out a reason why business or first class tickets may be worth the money. Not on the way over to Europe but on the way back after walking 15,000 steps a day on cobblestones, I could hardly move. I’m 71 and walk regularly but not on cobblestones. It was wonderful having reclining seats and more legroom. It also seemed like bathrooms were easier to get to. That isn’t a splurge I’d normally recommend but it sure helped this time.
I have chronic migraines and if I’m ever on a long flight and somebody with over bearing perfume or cologne sits next to me I am screwed. I won’t fly anything other than first class from now on and I love it!
Aubrey, fantastic approach on investing on the pieces you love! I feel exactly the same way. We even align in terms of spending on first-class airfare. I would love for you to develop that conscious-budget travel king tips video. Thank you for your work.
For me, I don’t mind splurging on a first class ticket, especially if the flight is 4 hours +. The comfort of first class seating is worth the money.
Yes. Please share your travel tips!
Bad shoes or good shoes that don't fit well leads to deformities and arthitis on your feet, knees, and hips. I always put heel cup grips, arch support, and an extra cushion on ALL my shoes. Think of it as tailoring your shoes.
I do also.
Yes, please share travel tips. I'd really enjoy that. I very much agree on little tweaks to get a garment right as well as ensuring comfort.
Yes to travel budget video! Thank you!
These insights are golden! My financial circumstances changed recently, and I’ve been adjusting ever since. My last indulgence that was first class tickets. Ive been trying to rationalize that I “deserve” them, but of course something else in my budget has to go! I’m in the early planning stages of a trip, and your video put everything in perspective. Thank you for another outstanding video that provides classic advice.
First class cannot be underestimated. It is a huge part of your trip. I do fewer trips to always fly in comfort. I travel solo and it makes me feel safer too.
Yes please. A travel budgeting video would be greatly appreciated.
And as always thank you for making great videos!
Yes to a video about travel and the budget. Thank you so much for sharing all your wonderful knowledge with us!😍😍😍
Such great advice, Audrey! I love to travel too, and completely agree about the first class tickets! Would rather have my money to spend at my destination every time! I would really like to see a video about this from you. I love your balanced and informed information. Thanks again!
I think though, that business is worth it.
Just more leg space in general but never first class
@@user-sg5tr6jt3y I agree
Audrey, I would love to see a travel video from you! You always have so many great suggestions so I think it would be very beneficial!
Absolutely true! I also avoid fast fashion and buying things that I know I'll never wear.
Thank you so much audrey you are so helpful we appreciate it you sharing all these tips God bless you and your family amen
Another idea for fancy and unique formal wear is to rent your outfit! Cheaper than buying and you return it after you wear it. A very economical and sustainable way to wear something unique and fun.
I avoid branded items so because I can promote real artisans
Buying from local market sometimes you may find something very unique
Indeed! And your money stays in the community. Great point.
For me it’s earrings 😊 unique classy designs supporting local and at reasonable prices too.
Sometimes people think local market things are not fashionable or classy
If we promote them , they will start making good one
Such good points! Thank you 💞
I agree completely but not with fancy things which I wear just once/, twice a year ; I bought experience high heel plateau sandals for weddings etc. I don't wear them very often, but when I wear them I wear them I can dance the night through and am so comfortable! I have them for nearly ten years and I think they were a great investment 🌸🤗
Thank you for a great video! Looking forward for the one with tips on travelling
I traveled first class for the first time in my life right before the pandemic. It was a transcontinental flight, and I felt pampered and slept like a baby on a lie-flat bed. (I have a horrible time sleeping on planes, and I am Audrey’s size.) On the other hand, I have sat on the back of the plane on a transcontinental flight before-such a stark contrast!
I agree that spending money on top-notch hotel rooms and cruise packages is worth it. For example, I can rave about Viking. It costs a fortune, but because so much is included (including one excursion per port, house wines, and even access to the spa room aside from individual treatments), I feel that I get my money’s worth and that it costs the same, if not, less, than cruises that nickel-and-dime everything not included (e.g., WiFi, drink packages, access to spa rooms). Plus, the staff treats you like royalty.
As I am in my 40s now, I pay attention to the quality of clothes and shoes. I am tired of buying clothes that look cute at first but fall apart after a few wears. Finding comfortable shoes has been a challenge, as I have long toes, high arches, and duck-shaped feet (wider forefoot and narrow heels). Buying shoes online has been a crapshoot for me. I must say Tory Burch flats are stunning, but just because they are designer flats doesn’t mean they are comfortable and worth the money. (I swear I have worn 3+in/8cm heels that are more comfortable.)
I am completely with you about Viking cruises-love them! I am in my (very late) 60’s & appreciate the fact that their ocean cruises aren’t floating amusement parks, as well as all of the reasons you stated. They offer a good travel investment.
And I understand having duck-shaped feet. I avoid designer shoes because I’m convinced they’re designed to torture me, but wear attractive supportive shoes that will last &/or can be re-soled after a reasonable period of time.
@@Grazilla52 I agree Viking Cruises are a world of difference from those floating amusement parks. We love Viking’s peaceful, not partyish, atmosphere with plenty of artwork and reading material here and there as well as many like-minded, curious travelers who want to learn, not drink and party. Afternoon teas and stimulating lectures are among the highlights, not silly contests. Plus, the food is excellent. At other non-Viking cruises I went more recently, the food was terrible.
Good for you about buying shoes wisely. So many designer shoes are made for baguette feet, not a real person’s feet. That’s why my Tory Burch flats as well as my supposedly “comfortable” Everlane Day Pumps (the company lied that they are comfortable all d*** day) were excruciatingly uncomfortable. Like you, I am over “disposable” shoes.
This was really insightful. Enjoyed the analysis behind each.
Also really loved the travel reel you made recently.
Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the video. Your voice is so calming ☺️
This sweater you’re wearing with the dainty gold necklace - looks absolutely great on you !! So chic

I’ve worked in the industry for over 15 years (and was Mkt Dir for Wild Dunes Resort there in Charleston for 10 of them) predominately in luxury beach/resort destinations. Happy to contribute a couple of recs or insider tips.
