  • I’m looking after my good friends car while she is away and I’ve decided to do a few good deeds and undertake some maintenance work on her Freelander 1.8 petrol.
I’m a sucker for punishment but if my graft puts a smile on a friends face then it will be worth it.
I knew the oil service was overdue so I will do that along with new air and pollen filters and I also know there are some cosmetic jobs she would like doing so I will also be restoring the headlights properly to their former glory as well as deep cleaning the alloy wheels.
What I wasn’t expecting was a loud clonking when cornering and the front wheels fighting with the rear wheels. I don't think she should be driving the car in that state so after some investigation it seemed highly likely the Viscous Coupling Unit and VCU bearings are the culprit and shot so first up is to get that sorted.
In Part 1 I assess the jobs and drop the prop shaft out and replace the VCU and VCU bearings.
I know she wont mind me working on her car but maybe I’ve bitten off more than I can chew this time, I’ve got 7 days to do everything before she is back.
Should be fun..weather permitting of course :)
