No useless chatter, intro or annoying background music-right to the meat and taters. Great video! My old 93 Escort is pulling to the left with inside LF tire wear so I'm thinking I might have a busted spring. These cars refuse to die if you give them a little TLC now and then. Gave $700 for mine over 5 years ago, best buy I've ever made.

      Thanks : )
If your front left tire is worn on the insidepart of the tread ,i would say that you have too much toe out on this tire.
I would check the tie rod if there is some play,or simply the bushing on the control arm of this side.
Usually suspension is involved when you have weird wear pattern on the center or the whole tread area.
      look : www.google.fr/search?tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=kdRPWpmUCImhUYn_tIgC&q=tire+wear+pattern&oq=tire+wear+pattern&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0j0i30k1l5j0i5i30k1l4.151329.157893.0.158127.19.19.0.0.0.0.110.1478.17j2.19.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..0.5.404...0i19k1j0i13i5i30i19k1j0i13k1j0i13i30k1j0i13i5i30k1.0.VZ708Pk7g1c

One of the most detailed videos I have ever seen. Buying 2 shocks with springs is over $400. Thats compressor saved me money without the spring I only paid 57.50 a piece for the shocks and 55.00 for that same compressor you used.

Thanks, I wasn't quite sure how much to compress the coil, thanks for your help. My shock was gone and I had to overcompress it because it wasn't rebounding. Once the spring loosened off of the end caps, I removed it, the new one stuck through almost 2 inches. I could've released the end nut sooner but I didn't realize that I was over compressing the coil. Live and Learn. God Bless you.

You can pull on the shock rod itself to extend it.
Not all shocks expand by themselves following if they are gas shocks ,or oil shocks.
As i know oil shocks do not expand alone.

Great video and job. I would've changed the dust cover and the other rubber parts while I had it apart because they don't cost that much and I wouldn't want to take it apart a couple of years later to replace those. If it's not your car or you don't plan on holding it for much longer than that may be an acceptable route to take. My preference for installing a tire is to tighten the bolts as much as I can by hand before setting the car down then standing on the wrench for the maximum tightening after. Good job and you are quick considering all you had to work with is hand tools. Great work.

Haha...great video . I was watching thinking back to the very first time I decided to replace the struts in my 1969 Datsun 510 coupe. I was 15 years old, bought it off my friends dad..had blown engine....I changed the engine and took the struts out to change the "shocks"...well I just decided to take that top nut off, with out using a spring compressor....I almost died. When I reached the last few threads....it blew up in my hands....hehehe......luckily it was facing away from me. I never found the ratchet or socket ..lol !! It blasted into the woods along with the bearing. The spring was about 200 feet from me. I'll never forget that day...lol I was young and stupid. But I learned...I got my license and drove that car everywhere..I miss those days..haha...Matt.

LOL quite funny to watch you struggling with that center nut. What you do is to loosen it from the top whilst it is still on the car and whilst the 3 bolts are still holding it for you. You half undo it before taking the strut off, then it is simple to unscrew the rest of the way when on the ground. Over wise it's a really great video.

Not possible on this car,the spring is quite compressed in the strut.
If i do that i will can't remove the strut from the control arm,not enough room, the control arm will not go low enough.
On others cars it would work for sure.

    • @michaelovitch
      @michaelovitch  7 років тому +4

Yes,it's a trick ,but you can't always do that, because the strut expand and you are in trouble to remove it then.

Why do you use a Vice grip before removing the top nut on the strut?

    • @michaelovitch

      Yes i've heard about them.
Nitril are stronger if i'm right, never tried tho.
I don't use them because i tear them very quick,i sweat like a pig in it,i prefer coton gloves or nothing,i feel things better.
I run a soap/detergent factory on the side too ,so i buy my own products and i'm rich now because of my filthy hands : )
But my mom still kick my ass because i ruin all my clothes.

Wired why the shocks does not pop out by themselves.. But - normally I pump the shock a couple of times to get the pressure going. That way it will not bump all the way to the buttom forist time you hit a bump - that can damage the top-bearing etc. Sometimes you also have to turn the piston a little to get it out af "transportation / packaging-mode". Then they pop out.

I do admire the guys tenacity and desire to achieve. I would like to add that really he should have located the unit in a vice to keep it firm and when compressing the spring take a couple of lengths of good wire like welding rods and tie them around the spring coils tightly so that if the clamps slip he has a safeguard backup - they do slip and the reaction is violent - thinking fingers off, heads severed etc. Otherwise good job.

Yes about the vice, i should do that for safety.

Just a suggestion, look into quick struts. They come complete with the strut and coil already assembled and you only have to swap it out with the old one. Zero danger and faster to finish and not that much more money. My fingers and life are worth it. Nothing wrong with doing it yourself and I used to do it when I was a young man but I don't heal that good anymore.
