In the making of this movie, the jets that are used were CGI shopped (the super sabres), but the prop driven skyraiders were apparently all real. If you are asking if they were that low in that day, in 1965, I would say they probably not THAT low, but still under any minimum normal ceiling. They didn't have the complex guidence systems of today, it was done by eye, and they were dropping them so close to the lines they HAD to get close. Some of the aircraft that day were getting hit with shrapnel from their own bombs. That should say enough.
360Nomad I do remember hearing that during the actual conflict, one of the planes went down because it got hit by shrapnel from its own bomb b/c it was flying under minimum altitude.
"Broken Arrow" didn't mean a unit was overrun ---- but in danger of being overrun. Also, Mel Gibson's character would not have the authority to make that call. Broken Arrow was an exclusive USAF radio code used exclusively within tactical Air Force channels. An Army ground commander not only had no authority to issue the code, but he probably didn't even know it existed. Broken Arrow WAS called at LZ X-Ray, but by the USAF FAC (forward air controller) Lieutenant Charlie Hastings, who didn't need the Army commander's permission to call the code, or even the obligation to tell him that it was done. This was in the early days of the War when USAF FACs accompanied battalion sized Army units on the ground. In short order, the FAC's were put in the air and their only contact with the ground was by radio. In fact, Hastings was shot down later in his tour. An important thing to remember is that the FAC worked for the Air Force; not the Army, and the ground commander could only request TACAIR support ---- the FAC would evaluate and prioritize the request based on need, resources and even safety issues. And yes, the planes are wrong ---- Air Force FACs didn't call on Navy carrier Phantoms. Air Force TACAIR support both Army and Marine ground ops, but the Navy/Marine carrier arm supported only its own.
When you lose contact with 2 of your 3 companies in the middle of a fight like that I'd be getting scared. It never ceases to amaze me the miracle they pulled off that day.
Towards the end when the jet was dropping off the napalm was the most saddest war scene I have ever seen, it killed many American troops in that Calvary division including the Asian guy who said he was going to have a baby you'll have to watch this spectacular film if you want to know more. They didn't because that strategy totally failed in Korea. China would have defended a communist neighbor to avoid having a US ally in the border. This war couldn't be won, the best outcome possible for the US was an official stalemate...
Its kinda strange that the Phantoms and Thunderchiefs were not around as they were the USAF's workhorses during the conflict. The F-100 Super Sabers were still a sight to see though.
Cam Ward As far as my knowledge goes, the F-100 Super Sabers were not fielded as much as the say MiG-19 by the Soviets. And the F-86 Saber was being replaced by the Delta Dagger. You are right that the SKyraiders were very much abundant throughout. The primary workhorses as far as I know were A-6 Intruder, the Thunderclap, Thunderstreak, Thunderjet, Thunderchief and the Starfighter. And again you are right with the Phantoms coming in later in which the gen 1 sucked balls.
My favorite part is what happend right before this where Mel Gibson casually walks out in the middle of the battlefield not ducking or anything as bullets wiz by him.
+Tien Foen well, the damn thing is a made-up story. Ofc they would call anything even all the troops that available in southeast asia because it is a hollywoond movie after all LOLOL

Old glory Your brain is completely brainwashed by this kind of movie lol Sure the operation might is real but everything else is fake and shit. There is a scene where americans charging and stabbing them with bayonet, when did that ever happend? in fact murican lost like 4 men and half of the vietnamese army die by bayonets another half die by huey coming out of nowhere and fly above their base like 10 meter from the ground? cleaning the base up and return unharmed. I say fk your propaganda movie so hard.
0:10 Really cool detail. If you look on more you can see the classic U.S ARMY Gold on black tape but because Hastings is the Airforce leason Officer he wears the U.S AIR FORCE White on blue tape. Really fine detail for sad people like me to pick up on.
Every detail in this movie was well thought out. They even invited the real guy, Col. Hal Moore to supervise and give advise in the making of the movie. Except a few battle scenes that were way too biased.
the part where the bombers bomb too close, and friendly fire ensues... This movie was hard to watch because of that. But also real. When they try to evac that one guy with the burnt legs (who had a fam that he kept talkin bout} And they tried to pick him up but his tarred flesh slided off. Very real, Very disturbing. Just one event among many in the casualties of war
Dam.. Just imagine if you were the man that called that in and seeing your felliw soldiers get hit too and watch them burn like that... Vietnam was a hell of a war man
The big mistake the US made is attempting to fight this as a defensive war out of the gate. They should have used the navy to conduct night raids and destroy port facilities in the north and massed bomber raids on all tactical targets; such as oil, factories, foodstuffs, etc.... Making it difficult for the North to conduct offensive operations, dissuading trade and putting pressure on the North's population and military would have forced them to the bargaining table.
A week later another battalion of the aircav division got into a similar fight with the exact same NVA division and the battalion was crushed: the NVA learned a lot from this battle. The history books don't talk too much about that battle.
That's news to me. But then I don't study Vietnam past the politics of it and why the US, while militarily and tactically winning, lost at the politician level. Hells, the amount of people who say we actually lost when in reality we just gave up. The government who asked us in was about to implode, and we weren't going to sacrifice our own for it.

would have been one of the greatest combat movies ever if they didn't keep cutting away to the wives.
No son this was one of the biggest battles of the Vietnam war .... the NVA went directly up agents the USA military for days
Godspeed Hal Moore.
Its kinda strange that the Phantoms and Thunderchiefs were not around as they were the USAF's workhorses during the conflict. The F-100 Super Sabers were still a sight to see though.
This was in 1965. The SabreJets and Skyraiders were more common early in Vietnam
When commander knows the fight just got started
Awesome scene
One of the greatest movie scenes ever.
Like how the Skyraider flies into the foreground but the Napalm it just dropped bursts right to left across the area it just passed. Movies...
Those WW2 fighters were awesome!! 50cal 4 in each wing.. rippen em to pieces.. Awesome scene.
The A-1 Skyraider was post WW2, though it did see service during the Korean War.

It takes a lot of guts to call in a whole flight deck to drop everything on your location.
How many commanding officers you know would do that???
+Tien Foen
well, the damn thing is a made-up story. Ofc they would call anything even all the troops that available in southeast asia because it is a hollywoond movie after all LOLOL
The Axis PoweR
I don't know, I've read the book by former Col. Hal Moore and Joseph Galloway and they mention that part when his outpost in X-ray or was it Albany was getting over run by the NVA/Vietcong.
Still it's nuts-Nazi symbol, huh?
Ach du liber?!?
schones wochenende, mein heir.
The axis power, this ACTUALLY HAPPENED dumb ass. It isn't made up
Old glory Your brain is completely brainwashed by this kind of movie lol Sure the operation might is real but everything else is fake and shit.
+The Axis PoweR The ending was Hollywood...not the rest of the fucking film. It was supervised by Hal Moore and Joe Galloway (Veterans of the battle).

Really cool detail.
Yeah charlie was feeling that in the morning
When I open the door to find a large snake warming itself on my front step.
BROKEN ARROW.
exactly what happened to music in the 80's
The jets at 1.20 what model are they????
You know shtf when the journalist picks up an M14.
Best part, custer and the 7th cavalry were trapped like this,7th cavalry became the first cavalry, shown here
goddamn f4 phantom is such a badass looking aircraft
the part where the bombers bomb too close, and friendly fire ensues...
Vietnam was a hell of a war man
Yup. Been there, done that.
Leave it up to the Air Force and Navy to bail the Army out of a tight situation.
If not for the Army you'd be sitting around all day doing nothing. Because we know the Air Force and the Navy aren't going in first
Get ready America
If battlefield 2018 was in Vietnam and had Operations
when ziggs afks in the jg then comes out just to ks
Wow AKs vs. planes armed with machine guns and napalm. Great idea
We won the war on the field, lost it at home
A week later another battalion of the aircav division got into a similar fight with the exact same NVA division and the battalion was crushed: the NVA learned a lot from this battle. The history books don't talk too much about that battle.
Hell they don’t talk/mention alot of things
That's news to me. But then I don't study Vietnam past the politics of it and why the US, while militarily and tactically winning, lost at the politician level.
Hells, the amount of people who say we actually lost when in reality we just gave up. The government who asked us in was about to implode, and we weren't going to sacrifice our own for it.
0:33 Some scenes from Flight of the Intruder hahahaha cool
full movie please thank u:)
