The military has a fondness for starting everything at Oh-dark-thirty. Mel Gibson nailed this small slice of military existence in this scene. No fanfare, no convoys, no martial music. Just a bunch of Joes rucking up and stepping off into the unknown to answer their country's call.

Once a little girl asked "Daddy what is a war?" And a Father answered "War is something that shouldn't happen, but it does. It's when some people in another country, any country try to take the lives of other people, and then soldiers like your daddy have to go over there and stop them." The little girl asked "Are they gonna try to take your life away daddy?" And the Father answered "Well they're gonna try, but I'm not gonna let 'em". Rest in Peace Colonel Moore, may you never know another day of war.

Yes, love this scene added in to this movie. Most of the Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers were career professional soldiers in LTC Hal Moore's Battalion/Squadron and many of the junior enlisted soldiers were conscripts (draftees) who were committed to two years of military service. Additionally, reading the book about one-third of the soldiers were re-assigned to form the core of another unit that would train with other newly recruited soldiers for the air-mobile concept that was to be deployed into vietnam. The Director Wallace made a very wise decision to include this into the film to show THE HUMANITY of the soldiers who had Families including Wives, Children, Sons, Daughters and Babies who were left behind when The 1st of the 7th Cavalry deployed with its parent Brigade to vietnam in August 1965

This is the first time US soldiers set off for battle in Vietnam. My uncle would later do the same as a Marine in Da Nang. He lost many brothers in arms over there. We should never forget the 50 000 soldiers who gave their lives in Vietnam. God rest their souls.

" We sleep peacefully in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence upon those that would do us harm"
If it weren't for those men, where would we be? The deepest of gratitude and love to those of past, present, and future, that are those rough men. Someone has to do this ugly work and they stand up to take on this awful chore. Amazing~ 🇺🇸

Probably one of the best movies or the best movie I’ve ever scene. I cried and at the same time was proud as hell to be an American. Our soldiers are the best in the world bar none. The sacrifices made by so few for so many. A soldier deserves honor and respect. Neither of which our boys got when they came back from that hell hole. So many died, not in vain but as heroes. Many in the states didn’t believe in the cause but these boys believed in each other and no color separated brothers on the battlefield.

One of the most powerfull scenes about Vietnam. Having said that we should never forget the American sacrifice in the liberation of Europe after World War 2 (over 400,000 soldiers died). They never asked us Europeans how we got into this mess but they brought us liberation in 1945. This scene always reminds me of that.............Greetings from The Netherlands...

Reminds me how a friend of mine in the Dutch army went to Afghanistan.
He nearly teared up. But instead turned around and walked on the plane like a boss. He was a elite scout so he knew he was going in enemy territory.
I said to myself. Go get em my friend.
Funny how the guy has a babyface absolutely no upper body muscle. But has the mind of a warrior.

When I left for Vietnam in December 1969 I met up with one of my infantry platoon training buddies in the Greensboro NC airport where we said ‘goodbye’ to our families and then flew together to SFO and took a taxi to Oakland Army base to process out to our assignment in Vietnam. We linked up with one more buddy from Ft McClelland while in Oakland and then 160 or so of us a couple days later took busses from the base to Oakland airport, early in the morning when the airport was still mostly empty. We marched in a column of twos thru the airport through the terminal, through the area where security is now, and up the ramp to the gates. Two San Fran hippies, high up on a catwalk to an observation platform were dropping flower petals down on us marching soldiers… waving goodbye to us-their world to our world. We marched on up the ramp. The only sounds: just the soft swish of new bright green jungle fabric not yet damaged by time or elements or injury, just the thumping on carpet sound of 160 pairs of boots in step. No one could speak or wanted to.

"Platoon" was maybe 3 other films on Vietnam. These soldiers were able to go back EVERY day to their bunkers which were larger than my first home. They got high as a kite. One can not base this plot on anything that comes out of Hollyweird. Two soldiers fighting against.each other. These two soldiers would have been sent back to the rear. This is something that you can't get away from. Tom Bringer's role would been shot in the next ambushed . Yes really. It happened to our platoon. When leadership fails so does the entire platoon. This was very common. Platoon gets only 3 stars in my rating. The acting was great but the plot suffered greatly. Kevin Quinn. 101st Airborne Infantry Vietnam 1968/ 1969.

I used this scene to illustrate the term 'Oh Dark Thirty" to kids. We arrive at the rally point at Oh Dark Thirty, being a generic term for some super early time in the morning when the sun hasn't even peaked over the horizon yet. It's dark, it's cold and you do it, because you're supposed to. :)

Always loved this scene out of any of the other war movies except like maybe saving private Ryan. Mostly because of the strong symbolism behind the scene it always reminded me of the Alamo. When Travis made the line in the sand to stay and fight or to leave. One man in the light is just one man, 4 men in the light brings many. It’ll always be a great scene truly.

This scene made me cry like a baby, what a man must do to protect what he loves from the evil of this world, just like how God came to earth to protect us and deliver us from evil and died for us on the cross to create a way that we would be free, freedom is never free. It is always bought by blood.
