I saw Zappa live three times. The last time was in my hometown, Miwlaukee, WI. The drummer and bass player came on statge and started a groove. One by one, the other band members came on and joined, and got something really nice going, getting heavier. Then Zappa came on, walked to the front of the stage and started playing an absolutely face melting guitar solo! The band was pushing him and his solo was getting more and more intense. Then suddenly, BAM! Everyone except the drums and bass laid out, the groove was still there, but it was real quiet. Then Zappa goes up to the mic and says "Hi there!" The crowd went nust. He said "My name is Frank. And this is my hobby!" The crowd went bonkers.
This is how he began the show.

saw the Mothers in 67 in Fresno. In the middle of a song Zappa would call up a mother and he started telling a story about rebuilding he motor in his mother's basement, then call up a second guy and then a third. All talking over each other. Quite a few people got up and left. When Frank was satisfied he went into a solo like in this video. Everybody came racing back. This was after his first album and he was still fucking with us all.

Had a blast with Zappa 1973 concert @ Kent State when he had a full leg cast on and was hopping around all over the stage. Incredibly, he opened for Mahavishnu Orchestra! When the concert was over we could hardly move. I knew Zappa could play the guitar but I never really knew how excellently until that night when he played a 20 minute solo. All those years ago..

I saw Zappa in Montreal sometime in 1977 with Terry Bozzio, Ed Mann, Patrick O'Hearn, Adrian Belew, Tommy Mars and Peter Wolf. I saw him a couple of more times over the years, but this was the most memorable concert of his for me, and one the the most special musical experiences of my life. The sound was fantastic, the atmosphere was electric and the performance was sublime! An incredible show.

I really like the solo in Drowning Witch from Ship Arriving too Late album... So many good solos I would really have to think about some of my favorites. Live at Roxy with Echidna's Arf (of you) and Don't you ever wash that thing; incredible ensemble playing. Music for low Budget Orchestra and Guitar. As good as many of Frank's guitarists were, Frank was still my favorite. He played so viscerally... The wah-wah guitar, Ainsley Dunbar on drums, and Flo and Eddie on vocals in Fillmore East Little House I used to Live in! The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution! Zappa on bass and guitar in Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station. Chunga's Revenge Transylvania Boogie (then listen to the Warren Cucurullo version on UA-cam, superb!)

This video came across my feed and since I am a huge Frank Zappa fan I had to check it out!!
So THIS very concert was attended by a really close friend of mine, who is no longer with us, but he had front row seats and if you look real close during muffin man when Frank goes to the edge of the stage to talk to some of the crowd my friend is right there!!
I myself went to see Zappa the following year '78 Halloween at the Palladium theater!!
Frank had Steve Vai playing guitar and still had Terry bozzio on drums and almost the same lineup as you see here!! The only difference may have been switching Adrian Belew for Steve Vai. Anyway if you've ever seen the live version of the song Stevie gets a Spanking, I think it's called, it's pretty funny!!
All in all I probably gone to about 8 or 9 Frank Zappa concerts from the late 70s to the mid 80s and they were always fantastic!!!

I saw Zappa in Anaheim in the 70s, and the Doobie Brothers opened for them. I was a fan of both, but it was an unfortunate pairing. Turns out that MOST of the audience was there for the Doobies, so during the break between acts the arena emptied more than half of the seats. Eddie Van Halen, famously stated that Frank played the guitar like a typewriter. Even after meeting him and Inspiring Frank's son, Dweezil. I respect what EVH brought to the table, but Frank was way ahead of the guitar curve in composition and structure than EVH ever was. Just like Allan Holdsworth that Eddie worshipped at the feet of, Zappa deserves every bit of the accolades that only the greatest guitar players aspire to. Johnson, Christian, King, (3 different facets of Kings) Lightnin' Hopkins, Hendrix... Frank Is the ultimate distillation of all that came before him, and to quote the man himself "I take orders from no one"...

Though these later Zappa bands were possibly more technically proficient, they somehow don't hold a candle to the Mothers. This is not Zappa at his best not even close, I'm sure Dweezil agrees as indicated by the songs played in his many tributes to his father. What is great is it shows that it ain't how you play its what you play and its clear that Frank's inspiration wasn't what it once was though his talent was still there and may have actually grown. Its a delicate balance between inspiration and talent. Who is your master?

Zappa was a really funny dude but that was nothing compared to his music abilities. He was also a satirist who commented on society in a thoughtful way. Great that folks are keeping his music alive and vibrant. Zappa music will make you a better musician. Or open the ears of any person. Given a chance I think almost anyone would enjoy his music. Also look out for all the future stars who pass thru his band. The guy could see/hear talent. And he played the skronkenest guitar. And he gave us Dweezal. What more do you want? Nice video. I saw Zappa twice -
First time was Fox Theater in Atlanta about 1973. I don't remember much, but do remember Ruth Underwood and Frank's guitar.
Then in 1974, an all-day festival at Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium with Mountain and Ten Years After. Frank was headliner.
We were sitting high up, second level, playing Trivia. No-one knew the name of Tom Mix's horse. About 30 minutes later, Frank was tuning up to begin their set, stepped to the mic, said "Tom Mix's horse was Tony". We fell out of our seats! Our little Trivia game had gone all through the stadium to Frank.
Found out many years later that Frank's home in Laurel Canyon had once been home to Tom Mix.
