if i said to myself 3 years ago that i would like an auto yaris gr i wouldnt have believed it. looks really great. I love all of the changes they made, the cockpit is magnificent, looks just like a racecar dash
Thats one hell of alot of changes ! I Love his philosophy of pushing the car in testing to find its weak points and limits and Then, improving on them once exposed... if only ALL car makers thought like that.
Respect to Toyota. Push it to the limit, break it, improve it but also listening to feedback back from journalists and current owners. I talked myself out of the first one but I feel I may have to get one of these! 😂
To see a pile of broken parts on the table was awesome. The transparency is something other car companies should be taking notes on. I love the willingness to listen to the customers and continually change the car to make it better. This fits their manufacturing philosophies of operational excellence to a t. Well done.
At least the hazard warning lights button is a nice big red button in a good place - seen far too many cars recently where they've tried to style it into the dash and placed it in an awkward place to quickly reach it...
Oh yeah true My Golf 7 had a really easy hazard button to reach big and visible up top When I moved to the Golf mk8 it became the exact opposite, the button is hidden very low down and very close to 4 touch buttons around it that change the screen (and take away the android map while at it) which is super annoying
Watching all the interior changes for visibility and ride height a few days after watching Matt review his own Yaris from years ago, they really addressed a lot of his complaints. Also, i love the explanation for having an auto transmission, sure it might mean more people buy it, but the notion of sharing the experience with people who only drive auto is kovely.
I love how they put a 90's racing arcade cabin on the dash. For a minute I though that was a placeholder cap to hide the original dash design before release.
First thing I noticed about the auto is the fact that its a forward shift to downshift. Rarely do auto manufacturers get that right, glad Toyota isn't stupid
I love the interior, how they have the new tech but in a really classic looking squared off dash, the digital speedometer in its little squared off section and same with the infotainment screen almost looking like it’s a crtv with the boxy dash around it. It really reminds me of a 90s Japanese dash but brought really well into current times.
Toyota is doing all the right things , kudos to Akio Toyoda for being the best CEO for a car company possible 😍 and yes I want a GR Yaris too gotta check out the nearest dealer
They did really well to improve it over the previous one (which is great in its own right!) Not too sure about the squarey interior design but maybe it's more function over form!
These are the things that win car owners over. It's the fact that they listen and are transparent about their program is big in my opinion. I hope they bring the Yaris version to the US. This would be such a fun car to drive in the summer and some of the winter.
My current GR Yaris had its first MOT last year done 40k miles on it having owned escort Cosworth, focus rs mk1/3, Evo 6,7,8,9 Yaris beats them all and of course I’m ordering the new one in March These modern day rally cars are just so good
Love the fact that Toyota put so much effort and imagination into making this car, reminds me of the glory days when the Supra Turbo and Celica GT-Four were forces to be reckoned with. That dashboard is awful though, I hope it looks a bit more integrated on the production version.
The fact that they listen to the customers is simply amazing. And then you have a boss that is just legendary. He goes out to the field and pushes the limits, not just sitting in his office looking at data sheets. We might not just achieve perfection, but that is surely close to it.
Man that torque converter gear change is fast. And bringing the dash closer to the driver is so helpful for us "small and short" asians. There are tons of GR yaris here in Malaysia already.

When Mat said “makes the car more robust” it hit me that literally no manufacturer ever makes their cars more robust anymore and I don’t think I’ve ever heard a car reviewer on UA-cam say they made their car more ‘robust’. It’s good to know Toyota are sticking to their strong points of reliability and super high quality. It will pay dividends for the next century, whereas other car makers have senior management who just want to get through the next 4 years of bonuses/targets etc and you can really see how quality suffers as a result. @@joe125ful In fact, Matt kinda is, by now is the biggest and more entertaining car reviewer/journalist/enthusiast guy, he knows what he talka about and is fun all the time, a younger J. Clarkson
Me alegra verte en España, circuito del Jarama. Gran trabajo , enhorabuena!!
Congratulations Toyota for updating this. I dont have a GR but like millions of others i have a regular Toyota. Hope the money earned from them will keep GR alive for a long time.
Toyota is the only brand who is trying to make the passion survive

I like that the boss has turned the car into into his own personal racing team. In the end every customer will feel like a dedicated team worked on improving their car. Buying a GR Yaris is like being a member of the GR team. You'd have to pay millions to get the same attention and dedication from another company.
GR Yaris in my opinion costed only as low as the R34GTR.
@@purwantiallan5089what?
Hyundai N hold yearly festivals that Albert Biermann personally attends in Australia
yeah, irony that Akio Toyoda is modern day Soichiro Honda.
The dashboard may be polarising imo it suits the car quite well. It's overall less distracting than the old interior and the view out is indeed so much better. I actually really want this car now considering the changes, and the fact they now have an auto option.
please edit this and replace the last comma with a period, and delete everything else afterwards.
@@CaptainAlex69 Let's be reasonable here lol. Yes to get perhaps a more 'authentic' experience the manual is the better option. However if I am going to purchase this vehicle to use as a daily driver / commuter, I have no qualms going with the auto. It is indeed a preference thing, and if you still wish to castigate me, or anyone else, for going for an auto, I'm in no position to stop you.
@@CaptainAlex69 why the hate on the auto lmao? This why we dont deserve new things cuz everytime we nitpick here and everything else
At least the screen is integrated with the dash compared to other Toyotas where they stuck it up like an afterthought…
people who gatekeep your level of car enthusiasm based on if you drive manual or auto are stupid… and that’s from someone who’s only owned manual cars lol
One of your best videos! I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned some new things about Toyota nowadays which has me surprisingly impressed.
That’s a real review of a sports car!!!
Old VS new one
Circuit drag race and differences explain by the ingeneer who built the car
That’s great thanks MATT
Toyoda Akio is a real life Batman. 🦇
Chairman during the day, racing driver at night with the Morizo alias, I fkin love that!! 💪
The car industry needs more passionate chairmen like him. Much respect for his and all the team's work! 😍
The way this brick wall of a dash made me fall in love with the interior.
Yeah, takes you down memory lane too (sorry, I am an old fart)
This is the coolest thing Toyota have done this year (so far)
Harkens back to the Old supra/celica interiors ❤
Looks like an old Supra.
Exactly, it's interesting..then the more you look at it the more appealing it gets. Love it 😍
I think it's terrible
if i said to myself 3 years ago that i would like an auto yaris gr i wouldnt have believed it. looks really great. I love all of the changes they made, the cockpit is magnificent, looks just like a racecar dash
Toyota is really going above and beyond with this little 3 cylinders 1.6 litre engine and their is still room for improvements I love it ❤👍👍
What a brilliant car and what a brilliant video. Greatly informative, no one better than matt to go through everything this well
Dear Mr. Watson, in my opinion … this is the best Video you've ever made in your carrier.
Astonishing what Toyota has done to upgrade this car! Thanks Morizo.
Exactly, in my bmw f31 i have to look for a tiny ass button that is akward to reach.. Wish more did it like this. Simple and quick if you need it.
Yup I was in a Mercedes rental car recently and needed them and couldn't find the damn button whilst navigating the end of a traffic jam
Oh yeah true
My Golf 7 had a really easy hazard button to reach big and visible up top
When I moved to the Golf mk8 it became the exact opposite, the button is hidden very low down and very close to 4 touch buttons around it that change the screen (and take away the android map while at it) which is super annoying
The Interior of GR YARIS kinda reminded me a lot to Altezza 280T.
I love how they put a 90's racing arcade cabin on the dash. For a minute I though that was a placeholder cap to hide the original dash design before release.
That new dash looks really sweet, streamlined and well integrated...
I still hope it's a placeholder lol
First thing I noticed about the auto is the fact that its a forward shift to downshift. Rarely do auto manufacturers get that right, glad Toyota isn't stupid
Toyota needs to make more cars like this and never stop…
I love the interior, how they have the new tech but in a really classic looking squared off dash, the digital speedometer in its little squared off section and same with the infotainment screen almost looking like it’s a crtv with the boxy dash around it. It really reminds me of a 90s Japanese dash but brought really well into current times.
Toyota is doing all the right things , kudos to Akio Toyoda for being the best CEO for a car company possible 😍 and yes I want a GR Yaris too gotta check out the nearest dealer
He is not the ceo of toyota anymore. But he is the head of gr department.
Nice, he's now head of the fun department @@yog3n599
@@yog3n599 Yeah, LEXUS ceo Sato Koji filled his position as head of Toyota
Toyota are doing a great job and this car is absolutely phenomenal. I wish I could afford one!
El tío más simpático e inteligente de internet. Enhorabuena por su muy buen trabajo
Amazing work coming from GR Toyota. Hope we see other car manufacturers hit back. Got to keep motorsports alive!!!!
They did really well to improve it over the previous one (which is great in its own right!)
Not too sure about the squarey interior design but maybe it's more function over form!
The way Mat reviews this car we can tell he loves it 😍
Toyota showing broken parts of their older car is only something Toyota would do. Their dedication to quality is unrivalled
These are the things that win car owners over. It's the fact that they listen and are transparent about their program is big in my opinion. I hope they bring the Yaris version to the US. This would be such a fun car to drive in the summer and some of the winter.
That Automatic transmission is incredible for people who want one!
I really love this new GR Yaris . Really hope Supra and 86 get a new gr updated
This!
My current GR Yaris had its first MOT last year done 40k miles on it having owned escort Cosworth, focus rs mk1/3, Evo 6,7,8,9 Yaris beats them all and of course I’m ordering the new one in March
These modern day rally cars are just so good
Would you choose manual or auto in the new one?
As it’s my daily I drive 50 miles a day on back roads I’m looking forward to getting the automatic
Love the fact that Toyota put so much effort and imagination into making this car, reminds me of the glory days when the Supra Turbo and Celica GT-Four were forces to be reckoned with. That dashboard is awful though, I hope it looks a bit more integrated on the production version.
Yes I worked for Toyota in the days they had the 3.0L turbo supras and the gt4 celica’s
so good to see the the tablet style sat nav infotainment screens being put back where they belong, in the dash!!!
The fact that they listen to the customers is simply amazing. And then you have a boss that is just legendary. He goes out to the field and pushes the limits, not just sitting in his office looking at data sheets. We might not just achieve perfection, but that is surely close to it.
the revolution in Toyota in last 10 years or a bit more is just astonishing. Gotta love the approach, and what a great car it is.
Man that torque converter gear change is fast. And bringing the dash closer to the driver is so helpful for us "small and short" asians. There are tons of GR yaris here in Malaysia already.
I really like Toyota, it's one of the few solid car manufacturers left on our planet. They still have Honor and actually want to create a great cars.
I could listen to that engineer for hours man. He knows his stuff!
The interior design gives me Lacia Delta Intergrale vibes!
I am glad that your carwow starter travels with you everywhere :)
Props to Toyota. They listen to customers, thay improve what is important, they are transparent about what went wrong and market it right way thus GR is starting to become worldwide Lovebrand. Forget EV cars or luxury brands, this is what i want, excitement packed with engineering.
...or at least the voice dubbed in!
I hope you’re joking I realise a long time ago, no matter where this guy is, it’s exactly the same recording for that start.
I love how Matt did this review, so much honesty also from the engineer. I love it.
WOW! A 5.06 second 0-60 is phenomenal considering it was driven by a non-racer, in non-prepped conditions with a manual transmission.
The new GR Yaris interior is HORRENDOUS !! Sorry mate !! But you are the BEST 💪
the dashboard is so cool like a proper rallycar! i like it
It reminded me of KITT from the 80's Knight Rider TV show 😄
But the square shape matches neither the gauges and items attached to it, nor the rest of the interior. Or even the body of the car! I'm all about Retro style but it has to flow
I wish to hw this interior on every toyota and specialy in the sedan where i think will be sweet to have rwd 😂🤣👌💪🏿
@@rci-9160 Yea but imo dashes have gotten way too minimal, and these huge ipads on the dash imo ruin the look way more than any "not-enough-flow integrated" dashes
@@TheLaualampI love the minimal dashboard. especially because there is no tacky carbon or glossy BS going around. the screen isnt thrusted into your field of view and i think it has a nice and clean look to it.
I do appreciate the automatic version. It's quite the performer.
There are many people that don't need/want the involvement with the car like manual needs. I like the hassle free driving experience, don't have to mess with the stick, especially in the city streets.
But manual is still more engaging
I have a left leg that has nerve damage & the auto would be right up my street ... quickly!!! . Had a few years with RS Cosworths but as the leg got worse i gave up the gears. The auto may be my route back to fun driving.
@@Nickoboss29yep. MT gearbox always yield faster times.

In our family we all have Toyota cars. We love them very much. And we are totally loyal to this brand. The management's attitude is completely unique in Toyota Motor Co.
This is the way every car manufacturer should operate.

I wasn’t expecting Toyota to update the GR Yaris, but I absolutely love that they did it!
respect for toyota they listen to the customers! seat position and the view from the car was my main complain about the car!
Toyota is single-handedly keeping the enthusiast JDM segment alive.
mans understand customer problem thank you toyota
That new interior is friggin' AWESOME!
It's great to see Toyota creating these types of cars again.
THIS CAR FROM THE INSIDE IS EXACTLY WHAT PEOPLE FROM 80S WERE EXPECTING! HOLY SHIT THIS IS COOL DAMN DESIGN!
Chief engineer so politely told Matt "you can not drive this car hard enough to brake it"
Also their chairman straight up is making a perfect car for himself to race, that is awesome!
progress is astounding
Brilliant video, the engineers at Toyota have real passion for driving and saving us at least for now from the bland world of Tesla ownership.
One of your best reviews Matt, thoroughly enjoyed this!
I love my GRC, but I hope they bring a lot of these quality of life improvements to that car too. My gf and I bought it together, but she drives it so much makes me want to get one of my own lmao
Look at Mercedes, once a hallmark of quality. Today, less reliable than a Hyundai and will a much poorer warranty.
Toyota is the coolest and one of most reliable brand
Well done Toyota! They always keep pushing the limits for better! ❤️❤️
