Hey man, i know its not common knowledge yet, but better help is a scam. they ripped me off for hundreds of dollars and they did the same to thousands of others..
Man, someone even made a doc about this.. so yea.. man, ya gotta stop supporting them. they literally are scammers...
cant wait to see the masters kit, OOOH YUUUR
Mike broke the code but ended up getting the sheet music to see it. It's an insanely weird time signature. But Mike broke the code before referring to the sheet music..
BETTER HELP SELLS YOUR DATA. DONT USE IT!
Do you know what this means... 66samus you need to attempt this song!
This needs more likes. I wanna see that.
Agreed
On fart drums. Without laughing even once.
Facts might as well… pump this dude comment so 66 will notice
Yep. And with a timer to see how long it takes.
A song that makes Mike Portnoy have to audibly count while playing is one _terrifying_ song indeed.
What did he say, again? Something like: "This isn't a song, it's a fuckin' mathematical equation!" and "This makes Dream Theater sound like fuckin' Weezer!"
@@DerEchteBold Yep! And I really hope Drumeo can get Danny to try and learn Dance of Eternity as fast as possible. I'm sure he'd have a few choice words for Mike as well. 😆
@@DerEchteBold "665, the Neighbor of the Beast"
@@Lface8
I don't understand the reference.
@@DerEchteBold 666 the number of the beast (iron maiden reference)
What I absolutely loved about Portnoy's cover is that he didn't have the kit (or time lol) to really recreate what Danny did during the whole breakdown / bridge phase, but he came up with something that was both close and made it his own. And maybe in some context someone could read that as a bit of a slight, but it's nothing short of incredible what he did in just a few hours.
this.
he employed a tactic I call the "Nick Mason infinite parade of fills" and did he best to make each one fit. For reference, see Atom Heart Mother and Saucerful of Secrets.
🤘🧙♂🤘
It took Portnoy around 5.5 ish hours to learn it, not just a couple. Great, great, job Mike!!!
It just shows you how masterful Danny Carey truly is. When a virtuoso meets a technician is all I can say about these 2.
Really Portnoy could not have done it. Even the easier parts that he did have the kit for he really did not get right!
THIS IS A MATHEMATICAL EQUATION!!!!😂😂😂
PURE GOLD!!!😅😅😅😅😅
really cool
Danny's drumming in this song must go down in history as one of the greatest drum parts of all time. Absolutely incredible, and on a completely different level.
Absolutely. I've been listening to Tool since I was a young pup. Magnum opus right here from Danny
100%
Puny compared to Mp
Danny's composition on this song makes Peart look like Dave Grohl
I saw Tool live on Stockholm a week ago... And the sound of Danny beating those drums on Pneuma... WOW.
Saw the same concert, holy shit it was so good.
@@Figurehead87 I was not there. I’m very jealous. 😮😢
I saw them in Manchester last month, was insane. I was rocking back and forth and fist pumping like someone who needs to be locked away.
Saw them in Memphis right before the pandemic. Mindblowing is an understatement.
@@charlenemack7040I feel your pain
It's impressive that Portnoy can learn another person's complicated parts so quickly. It's also impressive that he can make the bridge section just a little more "him" without changing the vibe. I'd love to see Danny try a Dream Theater song.
Probably the most difficult test for a drummer, to try to figure out what Danny would play. Got to say, Mike did a fantastic job making for some genuinely incredible interpretations
Easy for drummer like mike..
@@AnotherDay-ce6th I'm sure it was a refreshing challenge to him tbh
@AnotherDay-ce6th you must not have seen the video then lol
Mike is a freak of nature. I have never been able to grasp how he plays with all these different groups (that all play epic pieces of music) and still nail all of the parts live. It's insane.
😂
😂
Mike had to learn this in about three hours which is honestly ridiculously impressive as not only did he have all the equipment but this is such a notoriously difficult song to learn.
I think Drumeo provided the equipment, but yeah, still insanely impressive.
I think it was actually 6 or 7 hours to get to here
Two incredibly talented drummers playing an incredibly challenging song? Fuck yeah dude let's go 🤘🏻
A Danny original, it came from his mind and transformed into talent
Someone please talk Danny Carey into a play through on a Dream Theater song!!
Danny is a good drummer but there’s no way he could play Dream Theatre songs
@@Hhhlll7778 You think so? I think he could.
He could do 6:00 or The Mirror or Ytse Jam or potentially Nightmare. Nightmare would be cool af
@@mowglijungle4810 learning to live is harder
@@Hhhlll7778 if you know Danny Carey what you just said made no sense
I haven't learned this song but for what I understood, the main riff is 33/8 (hence the 33 on his jersey) split in measures of 6/8 and 5/8. The whole song plays with sections of 3 and polyrhythms in 3. Portnoy had to record it in parts because he couldn't do it in one take. That's how complicated this song is. He did an amazing job.
No, the 33 on the jersey is for Larry Bird who played for the Boston Celtics. He wears the team’s uniform of the city they are playing in when on tour. They were in Boston when this was filmed. He’s a big basketball fan.
@@cedricyoung4974 it's a happy coincidence.
33 - высший градус масона
@@cedricyoung4974if you would listen to interviews with DC, you would know it’s not a coincidence 😉 the songs and everything about them are usually connected because tool is trying to build multilevel meta messages
3 polyrythms. Child play for portnoy
I mean it's important to keep in mind that carey wrote this awesome track and that portnoy was put on the line to cover it. Portnoy did an excellent job in covering it in short time, adding his own style and experience! I am looking foward to his perfomes back in DT!
Brother Samus you need to get more into Tool. I slept on them for too long, and discovered later than most the Danny Carey is the GOAT.
Best way I can describe it is that he speaks a different language from than everyone else in the game. Unreal skill.
Neal Peart disagrees.
@@Br1mston3 professor Peart was incredible, but I can actually play his songs, which I can’t say for many of Danny’s songs. He’s a human octopus
@@Br1mston3 Exactly, RIP Mr,P
@@KinseiSensei When you post a video of yourself playing Tom Sawyer, or YYZ or La Vllia Strangiato, I will believe that comment, otherwise its all BLAH BLAH BLAH!
This video of Danny playing Pneuma is the most wonderful performance by a live drummer I have ever seen. I lost count of how many times I watched it. Portnoy did a great job, but the way Danny plays that song is on another level.
I watched this Drumeo episode. It took him only 3 hours to get this song down which I could never get this . It’s impossible so good on him. True master of his craft.
Never say Never 😊
33/16 is one amazing sounding time signature, I'm not sure I ever want to try drumming to it.
33/8, its 2 measures of 7/4 and one 5/8. Genius.
I mean the song is genius
@@balintgalambos691 Pretty sure the drummer confirmed it was 33/16 not 33/8. No need to be rude about it - I may be mistaken and that's fine.
@@balintgalambos691yeah, but you need to groove it!
@@thornecroft3509 it counts easier as 33/8 imo but I'm also not a drummer. The song is so annoying to count how it's written on the sheet music that I just tell people to count it however they see fit.
The sheet music is something like 6/8, 4/4, 6/8, 5/8 which repeats, and there's some measures of 9/8 thrown in.
I think we need to get Danny into drumeo to play the hardest dream theater song.
Dance of Eternity
I'm sure he could
Probably would be easy for him… still would like to hear him crush The Glass Prison 😊
I hope man that would be sick
Or maybe In the presence of enemies PT 1....
Pneuma has a strange time signature that once Mike thought he'd found the sequence he had a lot more success, treating it as combinations of bars of 6's & 5's but the order of the bar counts over the length of the piece evolves as it continues, hence we have one of the hardest drum tracks to replicate, but in the time he had, Mike killed it. Danny's complete version of course is simply mindblowing.
Danny is the best, its a really high bar to try and hit for Mike Portnoy, especially with only 5 hours of practice. How 66Samus has never heard this song or doesn't listen to Tool is the biggest question I have. Youre missing out on one of the greatest bands with arguably the greatest drummer to ever get behind a kit.
Greatest drummer? 😂😂😂 Portnoy blows him in everything. Where Migini, Lang, Donati kill him in techniques. Daney has zero chance against them clawn
@@AnotherDay-ce6th OK Meg White... First, its Mangini not Migini, its "clown" not "clawn." So you're bad at understanding music and spelling... All 3 drummers you mentioned are phenomenal, but if you think Danny Carey gets "killed" in technique against any of these great drummers, you honestly haven't a clue what you're talking about. "Danny Carey has zero chance against them"?? You know very little about drumming, drummers and probably music.
@@AnotherDay-ce6th You don't kow shit about drumming.. danny is the octopus 🐙 inspired by Neil Peart.... You little 🤡💩
@@AnotherDay-ce6th Sadly you've got zero idea about music especially drumming. I love Portnoy, Jordison, Lang, Martin Lopez, Duplantier, Gavin Harrison, Chris Adler, El Estepario Siberiano, George Kollias, Mike Mangini and many greats but Danny is totally unlike and belongs to a different drumming dimension. He's not just drumming but doing the maths equation in it. If God was a drummer he'd ask for lessons to Danny. Danny goes to level no one else can.
@@marufhasanomair I'm with you on this
Fun fact, Adam and Justin are using 3 different delay pedals for pnemua because they noticed that Danny speeds up when the tabla is introduced (the difference is 2 bpm 113 to 115) and then at the end they use ANOTHER delay pedal because of the same reason.
Well he doesn’t play to a metronome
Also where did you get that info lmao
He is playing in cursive
@@TheTrueJesusChristJustin Chancellor's rig rundown
Mike was trying to learn this in a Drumeo video! He was struggling with it. He admitted that this was a ridiculous song to learn! They did several takes and put them together. Portnoy is a fucking great drummer!
Where is your drumeo video, “first time hearing”?!?!?! Been waiting for it
Me too!
Saw it recently, they had him cover "Achilles last stand" by Zeppelin. I think he did a fine job with it, I was impressed!
Mike is the Family Size bag of classic Lays tater chips of progressive drumming.
Those toms sound f*cking prime.
Watching Mike learn the song was both very interesting and amazing, to see him struggle to learn the timing even with his talent and then nail it after just a few hours was just amazeballs.
Love how samus made the video exactly 22 minutes long. Oh yurrr!
The difference of someone trying to guess by ear (maybe a video closer to the end when Mike was going through it) who has made complex drum parts vs. the one who wrote the part. Mike did a phenomenal job and hopefully we get that match-up of Danny doing The Dance of Eternity
This is one of my favorite TOOL songs and I’m impressed that Mike even attempted to learn it in less than a day. I would be even more curious to hear how he plays it after practicing it more. Such an awesome video. Thanks for making this!!!
The whole video of him learning this and playing it is the definition of tasty.
im a bass player and the first time i watched this i couldnt help but giggle the exact way he does. its absolutely mind blowing how quick and well he played this, even for Mike Portnoy. that shits impressive!
Late to this but you shouldn't have to think about listening to more TOOL, you just do it, it's a must. Love your content!
Every time I watch Mike’s part back it amazes me more. It’s actually crazy that he played it so well after such a short time
Such a complex song. If youre blowing Portnoy's mind in him trying to learn it, you have a complicated song lol
I actually believe that how these are set up is that the drummer who is playing in the video has no knowledge of how the drums should be played for the song. So they listen to the song and put their own beat on the track.
So everything he's playing here is his own playing. Just his interpretation of how to play the song if he played for Tool instead of Dream Theater
I could be wrong. But that's how I've seen a few others happen. So I'm only going based off of what I've seen
@@Richard-n2w1g Most of Drumeo's videos are in that format, but in this Portnoy was explicitly allowed the freedom to listen to the track (with drums), read the transcription, and watch a playthrough as much as he wanted. That said, not to take away from the insane ability here, dude knocked it out of the park completely in such a short amount of time.
@user-jp1hs6sl3h they have 2 formats.
1st: drumless track for complete creative freedom.
2nd: challenge them to learn the drum parts as close as possible as fast as possible.
This was the 2nd format, in which Mike obviously smashed it, because no one is going to remember every note played on such a complex 12ish min long song.
@@Richard-n2w1g thanks Sherlock. All of us knew how these videos work. But good for you finding out on your own :)
I am not a drummer, but I think you have to feel this! Samus you said professional. I'm thinking MASTER!!!! They both melt your brain and it runs out of your ears!!!!!! DAMN......... Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the Mental Health shout. More people need to be advocating this.
The time signature is spoiled on his jersey: CAREY 33... (or 12-11-10, or 6-6-5, 6-5-5) Mind = blown!
get out! 🤯
Yeah that's simply BS. 33 is Larry Birds number and has nothing to do with the time signature. If he'd been in Chicago he would have worn MJ's #23.
@@mikerichardson60 it's obviously a coincidence, but still, it's awesome.
I think this leads to the finale of the series, when Drumeo brings in Danny to play The Black Page.
Kudos to Mike, I saw that drumeo video, and he spent like 5 hours to learn the song and finally play it, so this says how good drummer Mike is.
I’m very amazed by mike’s performance! In 3 hours he memorised everything!!! Danny played the song really well too! The song is amazing too! Well done both of them!( Mike for playing it so well and Danny for writing such a difficult song!)
I thought it was odd that he didn't attempt the hi hat pattern in the verses. Especially after seeing the vid of Danny playing it.
Two different kits. And Carey had been working on that song for years. Love the Ports.
Yes dude the flem on the drop is soooooo good. I couldn't even imagine trying to learn such a hard time signature in a day. 😫
My top two rock-prog drummers. Both killed it. Nice vid
8:11 He just put the snares on :D
I absolutely LOVED watching Mike’s take on this masterpiece, and loved your reaction! I’m so happy that we are seeing more of these drum cam videos like the one of Danny. When we watch a band live onstage we rarely get to see what exactly the drummers are doing (even though we absolutely feel it!) and it’s wild to see how much tireless work, sweat, and effort goes into what they do. Incredible! 🙌🏻🤘🏻🥁 New sub here!
I've watched the Drumeo video when Mike did this, he asked for a Foo Fighters song. He kept saying where is the one?? That's a great question...... T/his is ART!!!! Danny is in a class all by himself!!! Mike giid also, damn good.............. Thanks Sam!!!!
so crazy how much they chose similar parts to play. I.E. They both chose to roll at 2:44 boggles my mind.
Mike actually looked and heard the drum part before this take. This song is just too complicated to improvise. (Try headbanging to this song the polyrhythyms make it astonishingly difficult.)
You DONT "count this" you FEEL this.
10/8 11/8 12/8..I’d have to count lol
What? You feel it AND count it. You have to...
saw the video on drumeo when it came out, also the original drum by Danny carey with excellent quality and Id'say Mike is doing an awesome job mastering this very difficult song, the time are weird, it's long and has very complexe fills, he nailed pretty much everything
Can't wait for you to play this in the upcoming Drumeo vid ;)
Portnoy is legendary and I thoroughly enjoyed his rendition as it is super entertaining to watch him drum... BUT! Danny Carry does it so *clean* and that breakdown is just ... Chefs kiss...
Well it is Danny's own composition.. Nothing can take that away from him..
Now we have a smidgen of an idea how Colaiuta felt when Zappa had him sight read the Black Page during his audition.
This is why MP is great. I think this kind of cover takes days, weeks or months to master, but he only had a few hours to study it. It was nearly improvised. If he had had more time to master it, the cover would have been even better.
Both sound fuckin phenomenal - love the fills just before and during the build up!!
Hey dude just saw your Drumeo first take on Zeppelin and it was flippin sick dude.
One of the best drummers ever! His kit sounds amazing also! Drums sounds like a record.. I watched the full video last night, amazing in 1 hour can master very unfamiliar timings. Kudos!
Samus! If you or anyone else wants to see a great cover of this song you should definitely check out the cover of this song that Tyler Visser did as well when you get a chance. He nails this song. Also I’d love to see Samus take a run at this song! I know it’s no easy task with the time signatures in this song, but I feel like you could nail this song too man! Keep up the great work Samus! Much love man!
It's crazy watching all The drummers be amazed at others talent and not realize how talented they truly are themselves. Samus's performance on drumeo for led zeppelin was amazing and when it comes to hitting all the areas, it's probably the best first run I have seen on there Channel.
I always felt bad for the drummer of Tool (Danny) , since the first song they ever dropped to today, his job has got to be pure torture. The drums are what got me into the band, Neverending god tier creativity and skill. A true master of his craft. Portnoy did an amazing job here, must've been excruciatingly painful and taxing on the brain.
There's a cool bit in the Mike's video. When he finished playing he said something like: ''Danny, it's your turn now. Dance Of Eternity, man''
This original video blew my mind. There is no debating that Mike is a fucking LEGEND, but if I’m not mistaken I think it took him 5 hours altogether and the final performance was done in segments due to the complexity and duration of the song. That’s insane!
hands down my favourite tool song! love love love the drums in this and mike did awesome.
Awesome reaction! These are two legends of the game!
Something I’ve found over the years that helps me learning these songs is to focus on the hihat/ride sticking patterns.
Danny's ability to use polyrythms is unmatched by anyone i've ever seen live or on UA-cam. There are other great drummers but Danny is just wow!
maybe mangini
Marco Minnemann has legendary polyrhythms as well
@@LUCIFER-zeuz no … Danny makes polyrhythms groovy .. eulogy ticks and leeches and pneuma ate perfect examples … while mangini sounds like a machine
Thomas Lang?
My new drum hero!!I'm a natural drummer since 5yeas old.im so phukn I impressed with your accomplishments and dedication to the music and the beating tempo ,heart beat that brings it live.!phuk I miss those days
I mean to be fair Portnoy had a day with this song. Danny wrote it probably over months, refined it and also drew from decades of playing this feel he pioneered in Tool.
danny said in an interview that for most songs he writes them in a few hours. he just goes with what comes to his mind and records it.
Its amzing how mike and danny still play at this level as they get older
11:45 Yeah, he did that for an extra mandala pad on his left. He said the main challenge was to find a remote that had the same feel as a direct hi hat pedal.
Do you by chance know which one he uses?
the song played among the GODS of drumyal
My brains hurts!!
Then stop sitting on it lol!
It will have to come out!
Now we need to see 66Samus doing a cover of this but with blast beats and double kick for the fun of it.
I love what Mike did there. He’s a monster and it’s nothing short of incredible. And I find it so amazing that he’s down to having the whole struggle filmed.
Also when comparing the thing is that Danny plays the song differently than it’s on the album. The 4 on the floor on the Hi Hat for example.
What a fucking master stroke by Vic for making this drum cam video ! Most jaw dropping performances in reason years !
incredible. both absolute legends. i am floored every time i watch this vid of danny carey. and mad respect to portnoy for pretty much nailing it. incredible.
Hell yeah Samus!!!
Mike is a fuckin genius
Been counting this in the car for years and occasionally I get it and it feels like an accomplishment!
Great choice of video comparisons - I love it. You should make this a series.
Joey vs Jay vs Eloy
The Rev vs Mike vs Brooks
There are others, but I’m sure you get the idea.
Sometimes he play with vocals and After that with bassline or guitar, that's just amazing
Samus love to see you give this song a go too.
You will do a great job at it.
The sustain and sound is tightly connected to the thickness of the shells. He talks about it in his video with Rick Beato.
Portnoy is Portnoy, right, but Danny Carey has a unique way to play the drums of this song. Those strokes between the cymbals and drums and the crescendo, the impact is almost like an logarythmic function, every beat has an ease to it, a modulation, that is much more pronounced in the later's way of playing.
Samus we need to see your cover of this next!!!
Unrelated to the video...but over here jamming and realized seeing you cover Dont reach for me from knocked loose would be so sick...
Portnoy made it a Portnoy song, as he does with every single piece of music in this universe, because he is Mike goddamn Portnoy.
When you said "time signature, 22 over 37" I chuckled hard, cause it's actually in 22, 11 11 and the groups are 6 and 5. It took me a while to figure it out. Shit's an equation more than a song.
I've never heard Dream Theater, and just discovered Mike Portnoy just recently. I must've been living under a rock. I'm going to definitely listen this week while at work.
One of my favorite drumeo vids. Two of the best in the biz. That said, you're no slouch yourself. Throw some El Est. in there and we're cookin.
I love your channel! You're hilarious and so knowledgeable, entertaining and educational. Much respect.
But how the hell do you, a rock/metal drummer, not know Tool's "Pneuma?" It's like not knowing Rush's "YYZ" or DT's "Dance of Eternity."
SOO EXCITED FOR DT16 WITH PORTNOY BACK!!!
Both are SO freakin' good.
The video from Drumeo needs a watch by itself it's amazing
I’d love it if you learned something by tool like “Schism” so I could use your drum cover as reference to learn myself
Mike certainly adds some new cool elements to the song
That was some of the best drumming I've ever seen that was absolutely amazing he was so creative in the parts that he didn't know
Crazy Mike! Isn't the main part a 12/8th divided in 5/8th and 7/8th or something... 😂 Mr. Portnoy "mastered" that song in just a few hours! Amazing video, Samus 🤘
A sick drummer appreciating a video of a sick drummer playing along to another sick drummer is crazy.
This really messes with the internal metronome!! Great vid! I'd love you to see you react to some of the Top Secret Drum Corps stuff. Very different but it's some precision drumming!
