A Practical Discussion Of Guitar Tones In Church with Darlene Zschech and David Holmes

- This is an interview I did with one of my favourite people in the world, my sister Darlene Zschech. Described as a pioneer of the modern worship movement, Darlene's has sold millions of albums and has written songs that are sung by millions around the world every week. When I was in Australia at Christmas I grabbed Darls and did an interview where we talked about what she needs from her guitar player on the platform at church. David Holmes who is a long time collaborator with Darls was also there to give us some pointers.

That’s a bigger twist than when I learned that Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia were brother and sister!
You are on the awesome list now! LMAO
Agree!! Mind blown
@@nybyooboy1 haha I’m honored! 😂
Perfect comment!
So well put 😂
Never in a BILLION years did I expect Darlene Zschech on TPS. One of my freaking songwriting heroes. Mind blown.
Same here!! Great to see👏🏽
❤
So many key stages of life for us have been filled with Darlene's music, her voice and her faith. What a joy!
What an awesome episode to watch! Darlene has been such an inspiration in my own life. I grew up singing her songs in church, leading them as a worship leader, and then teaching how to play them here on UA-cam :). I loved hearing the mention of Delirious? - they have been extremely influential in my life as well. As a regular viewer of TPS (and owner of a GigRig G3S), this was so cool to see on the show.
We are pretty big fans of church/worship guitar tone :). Dan - I also wanted to say thank you for including a link to our website in the description of this video. Very much appreciated, and an honor.
- Brian
Yes! Thank you for the mention! Great episode!
Hey guys! Your channel is a great place of reference! Keep it up!
I haven’t played in churches in a decade, but love y’all’s channel.
you do understand that she is a money grabbing liar, right ?
WHAT?!?!? My mind is totally blown. I had no idea that Daniel was related to Darlene. Insane!
Same here because Darlene is Australian and I'm sure that The Pedal Show is based in the UK. Because of this, I never made the connection.
Dan, the knowledge that you 2 are siblings has literally made my day. I have been watching TPS daily for almost a decade and have been playing Darlene’s songs for 2 decades. What a small world.
Me too!
Same!!
I've been playing Darlene's songs since I learn the guitar in the early 2000's but TPS, was brought to me by UA-cam algorithm. Either way, it's meant to be. To realise that Dan and Darlene are related, I never knew that too! Blown my mind!
Absolutely mind-blown that Dan and the legendary Darlene Zschech are family! Between this interview, and the JHS channel featuring Stu G from Delirious, it's like 90s/2000s Christian music week on UA-cam! 🙂
Yeah I just can’t hardly believe it.
Was about to type the exact same thing! Delirious? and Hillsong on TPS and JHS!
I remember Dan driving me from Heathrow to the film set and we ended up in a discussion and he's told me this... I was amazed! ❤
Wow! What's that sound? It's the sound of 100,000 TPS fan's minds being blown! For years I myself have been using tones I've picked up from TPS Friday to play Darlene's songs live on Sunday!🤯
Ive been waiting for Darlene and Dan to be on the show together! Finally! Yay! And also Dave Holmes is an absolute legend! Now TPS with Nigel Hendroff, Stu G and Michael Guy Chislett Next!
The number one thing that learning humility continues to teach me is that musically speaking it’s about your senses of rhythm and ear, not your gear.
As a worship leader and guitar player there is SO MUCH good stuff here. The philosophy and reason for the worship band is a huge part of the music. And Darlene, you’re not alone on getting distracted in worship by trying to keep the band together when they’re not confident. I get so easily distracted leading by a lot of things, and that is definitely one of them. Great stuff! Thanks Dan for doing this and facilitating this resource!
excellent comment
When you have to blink twice when you read the video title...and then get an "oh wow" surprise in the first ten seconds!
Hillsong and That Pedal Show. I never thought these planets would collide. As it turns out, those planets are related.
Darlene hasn’t been a part of Hillsong for many years.
@@calebandrew9705when I think Hillsong, I think of the original phenomena and I think Darlene.
Boatload of surprises
Dan, the humility you have shown in never sharing this connection previously, speaks volumes as to your humanity. Proud to have seen this.
I was thinking the same exact thing.
And plus, allowing TPS to stand on its own merit and explore its own concepts. Now, you and Mick do have a lot of guests on the show, but it doesn’t feel forced (and of course, we’ve got the Name Drop Horn for that lol).
He’s mentioned it plenty of times.
There is a whole lot of us that are church musicians. This was a great intro episode to this role. Kudos to Darlene and David for representing the purpose and importance of “why” we are playing. And I would add, “ to whom”. Thanks guys.
I can not believe this is real! I have been using TPS to teach my guitar players for church for YEARS. This has instantly jumped to the top of the list for my guys to watch! SO THANKFUL FOR THIS!
👏🏻
Same!!
Did not expect to roll out of bed and have my two worlds collide like this! I am one of the many millions of people that sang a Darlene Zschech song this past Sunday 😂 what a legendary family!
Best moment of the show, "Thank you, Dan, I'm so proud of you"
That one threw me for a loop. did not know Darlene was your sister. I’m one of the OG worship musicians from 1967 as the US began to transition from Pipe Organs to modern instrumentation and I'm still serving. Great show.
Are you kidding me!?!? Dan!! How epic of you to make a video talking about this worship world. We take tone sooooo seriously like any other.
But that your family history is involved as well was a breath of fresh air. Thank you isn’t enough.
Wait, what? I thought I read your title wrong. Thanks for this unexpected feature. Darlene and David are great!
You’re most welcome 🤓👍
WOW! What a lovely family tree. This connection makes my world so much more beautiful. Dan and Darlene, you both have impacted my life for decades. Thanks for your work.
I'm having the same feeling. My world is a little better, as silly as that sounds, watching this video.
In all of my ignorance I never expected a show like this. I’m not a religious person, far from it.
But, it’s a great and beautiful conversation/ interview.
Thanx!
🖖
Thanks mate 🤓🙏
I'm not a religious person either. I'm a Christian. There's a big difference
Dan and Darlene share the same expressiveness and enthusiasm. Can tell they are siblings. Same smile and dimples too.
25 years ago I was praying about applying for a church in Scotland. I had "The Potter's Hand" on loop and through that whole process so it was sung at my ordination service. All these years later I am still there and we are singing Darlene's songs. Thank God for your musical family, what a blessing you have been in my life and in the lives of countless others.
I have been a worship guitar player for almost 25 years. I have been a huge TPS fan for the past 10 years. I never in 1 million years would have known Darlene was Dan’s sister! My mind is blown this was such a great episode it would love to see more like it, God bless you, Dan thank you for this episode and for all you do!
Know your purpose. Serve the music. Don't be a lazy player. Great advice for any genre. Thanks to all for such a wise and thoughtful conversation.
I’ve been waiting for this episode! Worship guitar is such a huge space in the world of pedals, amps and guitars, so cool that you guys finally did an episode on this!!!🤘🏼
As metalhead from Austria in my mid-30s i just now realized how huge this "worship music" must be in other parts of the world, i never knew that's a thing a modern electric guitar player could be interested in.
Our local churches are still medieval, and the only instruments there are these room-sized organs.
Listen to Let Your Glory Shine from Lincoln Brewster
Now I feel bad for complaining when our American churches seem hung up on the 1960’s.
Mind exploding!!! Who would have guessed. Darlene on TPS. Delirious name dropped. Such a great episode. Been a worship guitarist for over 20 years. So helpful
So cool that you and Darlene are siblings, Dan! Great episode and nicely sets the stage for having Nigel Hendroff on the show! :)
Dude I prayed so much for your sister when she was sick. My mind is completely blown Dan! Holy crap!
This is awesome, and i'm only 5 minutes in! Thanks for sharing this - as a church guitarist the sounds and tones of people like Nigel Hendroff have been a big influence.
Nigel is awesome. so many great rythym lines.
Yesssss
Thanks for posting, As a church musician for 40 + years it's nice to hear this discussion. Great stuff.
I've been a worship leader and playing in churches all my life, AND following TPS for years - but had no idea Darlene Zschech was Dan's sister!! Amazing!! Thank you both for being such great influences on us working musicians out there!
Holy Cow ! , Dan and Darlene are Brother sister ?! Holy cow ! I've been a Worship Bassist and guitar player for 20 years ,and yes have played Darlene's music that whole time, and still do now . Love the Delirious mention , Love them guys . Thank you for this Dan and Mick .
This is absolute gold for guitarists and church musicians...have already shared it with my teams! Dan, thank you so much for taking the time to do this...(and apologies...I do have an alright pedal collection but for church...my Helix just works!) Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!
Ive got chills Dan. This is fantastic. So cool to see this connection.
Yaaas....how fabulous. Your sister is such a legend. Love her music and played her songs so many times over the years....🥰
What a great show! Thanks Dan, gonna send this to my worship team!
How have I been watching TPS and playing worship guitar for 10 years and had NO IDEA that Dan and Darlene were related?!??!
I think none of us did because Darlene is from Australia and TPS is in UK, we outsiders had NO idea.
To say my mind is blown right now would be an understatement!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
W O W
I am so excited!!! TPS featuring Worship Music! I LOVE it! And that you then reveal that your sister is Darlene? Amazing! Now, please bring Nigel Hendroff to TPS, will you?!?!
Dan and Darlene being sibling is mind blowing... All of the Hillsong controversy aside, there's no doubt that Hillsong made a HUGE difference to the worshiping scene and CC in general. If it wasn't for Hillsong I probably wouldn't even still be playing guitar. Thanks heaps for this interview+discussion Dan and TPS team.
Great points! Also to my understanding m, Darlene hasn’t been a part of Hillsong for many years now. She left back before any of the ‘heat’, from what I remember.
WHAT?!?! Unbelievable. She has wrote some of my favorite P&W songs when I was playing in church. SHOUT TO THE LORD is still one of my favorite songs from church. And, Dan I would love to have your knowledge. Talented family.
So glad that you spent the time on listening and attending to the purpose of the music in church. Many times there is an obsession with getting the right tone or effect, but knowing how and when to use it is of primary importance.
Having led music for the last 22 years I have seen so many musicians lose sight of that.
For church guitarists (acoustic or electric). I recommend first dialing in your “always on” tone and play for a few weeks with only that. Then think of all other pedals as “expression pedals” each one helps you express something different, think of your reverb as peaceful, and find the setting that best reflects that, then try to find the joy setting.
Well done! Thank you so much.
Great discussion about modern worship music, attitudes and approach.
Dan. What a show! Absolutely love it and I share it with my church musicians. Wow!! Thanks.
Wow.... I have never expected this.😍
29:16 HE DID IT! He played the chord!
Glad I’m not the only one who heard it 😂
Oh wow! Darlene Zschech is your sister?! Growing up in the old AOG churches in Adelaide in the '80s and '90s, Darlene was a massive part of the movement that led to young guitarists like me actually finding a place in church bands. Playing at a Youth Alive rally was, up until that point, the absolute highlight of my musical journey. My faith journey took a different path later, and I'm quite cynical about how contrived and directed worship music is, but I can appreciate amazing musicianship and will be forever grateful for people like Darlene, Steve Grace, Geoff Bullock, and numerous others who gave me the conviction to keep doing what I was doing in those formative years.
Hey Dan, I was shocked to hear that Darlene is your sister. Back in the 80s I was in a Christian band in Orange County California. This is where Christian rock started. We went to Sidney and England around West Yorkshire and played in the schools. Those were some amazing trips.
What was the band’s name? I was in that scene for sure back then. Altar boys, Undercover, The Crucified, LSU, and Petra come to mind. Then came Scaterd Few, Mortal and all the late 80s early 90s bands.
Nice one Dan! You’ve hinted at this family relationship a few times but never let the cat out of the bag until now. As a nearly-every-Sunday church player this is very welcome episode. I think there are quite a few of ‘us’ lurking here and learning a whole lot from the show.
I’ve been lucky enough to meet Darlene a few times and she is one of the nicest and most genuine people you’re ever likely to meet. Dave Holmes is a legend and has quietly inspired a (several) generation of musicians to be the best they can be, me included.
Thank you all for this episode :-)
I'm so stoked for this
Thank you for this episode!
Oh wow! This is a surprise. So Awesome TPS!! Thank you so much!!!🤙🏼
Very well played. I appreciate the collaboration - let's see a 2nd episode like this!
That's amazing - had no idea you guys were related! Love it :)
This was totally awesome❗❗❗💯 This video deserves Three thumbs up👍👍👍
40 years ago my first wife and I attended a church in Portsmouth England. I was invited to play guitar during a service for the Sunday School.....
I arrived with an old Italian Echo 12 string ( I left the Strat and AC30 at home😅) and immediately, half a dozen worshippers (Church of England) got up and left muttering,
" I'm never coming back, that new vicar has brought in a rock band!"
I later went on to record two 'Shadows' style worship albums with my band 'The Shackle breakers'.
Our rhythm guitarist was a lifetime friend of Graham Kendrick who was HUGE in the worship music writing field in the 70-90's.....
Great show, Dan! Thanks for airing!
This was a huge and wonderful suprise! Fantastic episode, thanks for doing this guys! We have been watching TPS with our church guitar players and never would have imagined this awesome connection. You guys are the best, keep up the great work much appreciated!
Darlene is a real real LEGEND.. May God bless this family 👏🏻
This is amazing! Shout to the Lord was one of my favorite songs as a kid, and I've been a TPS fan since the real early days! I've been taking a much more active interest in playing in church lately and the timing of this was just perfect. Thanks y'all!
Wow abundant blessings to you both Dan & Darlene! 🙏🏼😊🎸
I appreciate you guys putting this on your channel - it isn’t unnoticed!
Outro. Truly beautiful. Thank you.
Wild. I’ve often wondered if there were more guitarists playing in bars on Saturday night or in churches on Sunday morning. Thanks for this.
The answer of course is more guitars in church on Sunday by a large margin.
@@vcsuwar6126 It's so over
@@oursentenceisup What is so over?
Love this Dan! Thank you for having your sister.
Great show!!! Thank you for doing this!!
Fantastic episode!! 🔥🔥🔥
Dan!!!! Oh my. You were already awesome but you’re Darlene’s bro… that’s a new level. Seriously though…
I grew up in church and also grew up loving blues and Clapton and Skynyrd etc. Every male in my family is a minister but I just wanted to play the Clapton type music or sound in church. Her style of music opened up that door. But what she said at min 27 is the #1 issue still. On all the worship guitar channels everyone tries to play the exact sound and even talk about how they don’t have the same guitar or amp as they used in the track. I’m always saying to use what you got and play what you feel. Doing that is the blues of worship… yes while supporting the purpose as she described. So awesome. So thankful you did this episode. So cool!
Every day i play your songs Darlene..thank you so much!
As a guy who plays bass at church every Sunday, these are great tips and musical reminders for all church instrumentalists. Thanks for sharing!
Dan, an amazing episode and thank you so much for doing a show around worship music.
Darlene and David, thank you for sharing your knowledge and gifts here.
I’ve found this to be a blessing, both with some validation to my approach and brand new ideas.
So glad you did this. Since I joined the Worship team 7 years ago I’ve played with some of the best players I’ve ever played with and it’s done wonders for my musicianship. There is a lot a cliches about Worship music that just aren’t true. While most songs are not technically challenging, your musicality will be tested. As far as tones, my sound hasn’t changed much from when I was all about heavy noise in the 90s. My in-ears frequently sounds like I’m Kevin Shields in My Bloody Valentine. 😄
This was fascinating and enchanting. Thanks Dan! My love of music was forged in Church in the least rock and roll way possible - as a Choirboy! However, once the early 90s kicked in and writers like Graham Kendrick and others started introducing guitar into worship music, I got the opportunity to play my guitar in a few worship bands. My best memory of that time was hearing my humble Tanglewood electro-acoustic guitar through every speaker on every pillar of Rochester Cathedral. Church music in many forms still moves me, and without the foundation of choral singing and understanding harmony, I don't think I'd have the ear and instinct I do now.
New favorite episode! Two legends!
That was awesome! Thanks so much for that.
This has got to be my favorite show of the year so far
I absolutely love this Dan! My sisters and mother are very musical and it's a special thing to connect with your loved ones musically
Heck yes. As a church guitarist, I've been waiting for a video like this from tps for awhile. Awesome video!!!!
Thank You for doing this 🙌🏻🎸😇
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I learned a lot.
This is amazing!
Such a great interview. Darlene is a GEM!
Thank you so much for this video!
Amazing, love this
Great show, thanks!
Love this video!
I had absolutely no idea you were related 🤯
This is awesome!!
Thank you so much for this!
What a great video! Lots of wisdom
Wow! This is a connection I never would have made. Thanks for bring us in.
Oh my hat and scarf I’ve just heard two of my favourite people are related!! Wow. Been listening to Darlene since I was a kid and play for Hillsongs Birmingham so I’m playing her songs every week! Sorry Dan I’m one of those been asking all those reverb /delay questions over the years for P&W, I didn’t realise you had the inside scoop on all the actual pedal settings Guitarists for Darlene like The “Droff” Reuben Morgan etc were actually using!
What a brilliant episode! Thanks so much for putting this out!
Enjoyed this show very much thanks tps
Wow wow wow! Darlene and Dan related !? A great Segway item of interest to us church players and hopefully others too
Simply beautiful and amazing I payed so many of her songs through out my life, what a blessing and a great show
SO AMAZING!!!
