  • Exploring a cliché or three as we take inspiration from the jangle guitar sound and see what comes next
    Welcome to the show! We recently had the great pleasure - nay, honour - of spending a day with flippin’ British pop icon/leg-end, Johnny Marr for an episode of That Pedal Show. Among the incredible experiences that day for me and Dan was Johnny playing two guitars with which neither of us are that familiar: a Rickenbacker 330 and a Fender Jaguar. Dan was so moved by the Jag, we found a way of acquiring one… and I’ve been itching about a Ricky ever since. Thanks to viewer, Mark Kember, we have one on loan for a bit.
    Thus, without any further adult supervision, we thought we’d take the opportunity to plug em in, add some classic compression and chorus and see where we ended up… which just so happened to be two cranked 100 watt heads. Heaven knows we're not miserable now…
    Enjoy the show!

    Thing i always found interesting about Ricks and Jags, Jazzmasters etc is that they are almost noodle-proof. Meaning you cant really just pick them up and fuss around with blues licks etc, they are so chordal and parts driven machines you kind of need to go to work when you are playing one, total songwriting beasts

      You can notice this in videos where they would normally play LP's/Strats etc and automatically go full guitar-shop-employee blooz, but put a Jag or Danelectro in front of them and it forces them to do something else!

    It took me 25 years to wake up to the beauty of what Jazzmasters and Jaguars do best. I had the same misconception of "no sustain=always a bad thing". When I finally bought a squire classic vibe Jazzmaster I realized that all the features that thought were bugs were actually the things that make these guitar designs so special. Totally possible to adjust the guitar to have more sustain without ruining it. Mastery bridge, maybe a buzz stop, slightly hotter pickups, perhaps a compressor. I don't use the latter but the three before it? Absolutely.

    I'm 58 and English so bands like the Smiths and Orange Juice were the main guitar bands that I listened to in my formative years, so these guitar sounds are so familiar to me, probably more so than the heavier 60s and 70s guitar sounds that seemed very old fashioned by then. Really takes me down memory lane hearing this.

    Mick is always admitting he listens most often to things like Counting Crows and singer-songwriters, but then he usually plays us huge Hendrix licks. It was so nice to hear him lean into this more chordal playing, the type he probably does in local gigs when he sings and accompanies himself alone.
    I would love an episode about what to play (and how to set an amp) when trying out guitars in shops, something that goes beyond epic single-note riffs and more into this territory.

      The playing in the video is probably 80-90% of what most viewers typically play ie belt out some chords and the odd lick rather than twiddling blues, rock riffs and atmospheric licks they usually play. To me this is a breath of fresh air as this is how most of us would play.

    To me Jangle is all about classic tones from Byrds, Beatles, Tom Petty, Rem etc. Which can be achieved by 12 or 6 string Rickenbackers (preferably with toaster pick ups), Vox or Fender amps, flatwound strings + good quality compressors like Diamond or Janglebox. Would have loved to see this thing being covered. The 80’s type jangle is different though, with a lot of chorus sounds included. Anyway, you are doing fantastic stuff, keep it up and thanks for yet another fine episode.

    If you decide to acquire a Rickenbacker, I would suggest getting one with toaster pickups. Those modern high gains don’t have the classic Rickenbacker sound. Toasters would have given you the treble you were missing compared to the Jag.

    • @jameshocking1188
      @jameshocking1188 6 місяців тому

      Be aware that the mid 60's toaster pickups are a lower gain 7.5 to 8 ohm. The newer toaster pickups and the ones on the V reissues are high gain 12 to 12.5 which are about the same as the new high gain pickups with the adjustable pole pieces. Also the wiring is different on the newer guitars after approx 84. It makes the newer Rickenbacker's sound quite a bit like mud boxes..
      Those That Know, know 😊

    • @darwinsaye
      @darwinsaye 6 місяців тому +1

      @@jameshocking1188 Yep, I’m aware. But there are some aftermarket makers who make the toasters more accurately. It’s funny, because I’m generally against the idea of swapping out stock pickups on guitars for aftermarket pickups, but in a case where I’d be replacing modern muddy high gains with vintage spec low wounds, I’d totally be on board.

    • @jameshocking1188
      @jameshocking1188 6 місяців тому +1

      @@darwinsaye I agree, I rewired my 360 12 v64 with 500k potentiometers, installed the .0047uf capacitor for the bridge pickup and replaced the pickups with Gemini mid 60's toasters. All redone to vintage specs. Saved all the old parts so that it can be reverted back to original manufacturer specifications.
      The modifications I performed made a world of difference and I now hear all the classic tones of the Byrd's, Tom Petty, Peter Buck, Smithereens, the Church, Matthew Sweet . And Peter Townsend.
      Also played through a JangleBox 3. Just also another historical note, Roger Mcguinn played through a Vox Treble booster that was later wired into his guitar by his guitar tech.

    I always liked Jim Babjak's (of The Smithereens) sound as heard on "Blood and Roses"; a bit of jangle, a bit more bite and a really tasteful solo that I wouldn't have initially attributed to a Rickenbacker (similar in appearance to 330 but w/ 3 pickups; I don't know the actual model), but I have never managed to feel comfortable in my very limited time playing a Rick (guitar or bass). I frequently love when others play it in the context of songs, especially when I can't tell immediately it's a Rick. With that 80s chorus sound, it's a fine line. I absolutely love The Smiths, The Church and bands like Wire Train and 80s/90s bands like Half String and For Against but a lot of 80s production is super dated to my ears. A lot is gold. it's about 50/50 for me.

    One great thing about having a "jangly" guitar is if you play in a band with another guitar player, and say you're both playing Les Pauls or other humbucker guitars. The different frequencies of a single coil guitar will help fill out the overall band sound and help with separation - each guitar can be heard better in the mix. Then it won't feel like you're fighting or competing with each other, instead complementing each other.

    Shhhh!… the benefits of a shorter sustain and more harmonically rich transient are a secret sauce for those wanting to avoid the cliches of “rock” guitar. The more who know about it, the more demand for already expensive or low volume production guitars!😊 Gretsch and Danelectro models sometimes satisfy this approach, too. Of course, add some juicy amp goodness or a few pedals and you get Won’t Get Fooled Again, In My Time of Dying, Can’t Explain, or Going Underground. So…”rock”, too.😊

    TPS has been part of my Friday morning routine for years but I was particularly surprised and delighted to see this episode. Jangle style guitar has long been a favorite of mine (which the longer I do it, I find the gear matters less and less although Ricks and Jaguars are such a great example of the foundational tone). It was also great hearing those guitars through the big 70s rigs but it reminded me of The Smithereens who played Rickenbackers through Marshalls (among other amps) and they had such a huge sound. Love you guys no matter what but this episode felt like a special gift to old jangler like myself.

    You guys are killing me. First, the Johnny Marr interview and now this. Johnny Marr is by far my favorite guitarist and the whole reason I went and got a Rickenbacker 360 6 string and a 1993plus. I'm okay with that neck on the 360 for a 6 string, but tried the 360/12 string and realized it was near impossible. That 1993plus with the wider neck is a Godsend.

    My brother in law has owned for over 30 years a Susanna Hoffs Model Rickenbacker, and it's a fantastic playing and sounding guitar when it "jangles", but I was stunned how great it sounded with serious overdrive and fuzz! He let me borrow it for around a month, and I had a blast with it! If you think Rickenbackers can't deal with it, you'd be very very wrong! I agree with Mick that the neck takes a bit to get used to, especially if all you're used to is Gibson and Fender style profiles, but once you get used to it, it's a very easy guitar to play, and not having one around, as I had to give it back to my brother in law, has me feeling the itch to add one to my modest collection. Turning 50 next year so maybe my better half will let me treat myself to a 330 to scratch that now constant itch!

    You warmed my heart, lads. Having loved Rickenbackers throughout my youth, I finally got the George Harrison 12 string (the one without the impractical R tailpiece). I wrote in on a VCQ that the narrow neck and 12 strings necessitated cleaning up my sloppy playing. Both fretting hand and right hand. I love it. My astoundingly wonderful friend, Larry Cragg, advised to just leave the selector toggle on middle position and use the blend nob. That's been the most effective. Dan, I was at a Bangles gig some years ago and, unsurprisingly, positioned myself about 8 feet from Susanna Hoffs, stage left. Wanting a close look at her Ricky, you understand. My date was dancing in an expressive way to my left, so I exaggerated stepping to my right, while looking up at Susanna. She watched it unfold and laughed. It was an all time favorite concert experience and makes me laugh to this day. Hey, sometimes the entertainers like a bit of entertainment.

    Many years ago this was my default sound (or something close-ish to it). Having come back to music more recently and watched lots of (the usual) UA-cam guitarists I felt like almost everyone was doing the same kind of blues/rock lick thing and I was amazed that everyone appeared to have forgotten the jangle sound that came from the 60s and re-emerged in the 80s. It was therefore refreshing to have this (to me important) part of guitar sound history into the UA-cam arena. Much as I like the usual UA-cam guitarists they do all sound mostly the same and are seemingly playing in a style everyone I knew a few decades ago was trying to get away from (the 70s 'large rock' Mick references in this video). What Johnny Marr said about the Rickenbacker making you play differently is 100% true. Anyway, thanks for this video it was a breath of fresh air to hear these kinds of sounds on UA-cam.

    In mid 1995 I bought a Rickenbacker 360v64 off the wall at Manny’s Music in Manhattan. Some years later I replaced the original overwound neck toaster pickup with a lower-wind version. (Kept the original bridge pickup but wired in a cap to bleed off some low end a la vintage Rics.) It’s been one of my top 3 electric guitars ever since.
    Dunno if all 360v64s are like mine but the neck is 1 11/16ths wide at the nut so it feels “normal.”

  • @gcvrsa
    @gcvrsa 6 місяців тому +1

    I'm really glad you did eventually get around to the other pickups, because my left eye was starting to twitch. I almost never use the bridge pickup alone on my 330. If I do, it's only for particular emphasis and contrast. Probably 70% of the time, I'm on both pickups, 20% of the time on the neck pickup solo, and only 10% of the time on the bridge pickup solo, if even that much. The Hi-Gain neck pickup solo on a 330 is IMO one of the best guitar sounds of all time, and that sound is fantastic for Blues.

    I've been waiting for a Rickenbacker to get in your guys' hands for years! I have a few and admittedly never try to go for jangle, usually more of a clean ambient neck pickup thing that sounds beautiful (and the bridge can handle distortion/fuzz with a unique clarity and rawness as you saw later on in the episode). I strongly encourage you guys to try a full Rickenbacker episode - I think you'd be surprised playing a 620 model (and the neck/fingerboard is much more forgiving coming from Fender/Gibson style). Great episode as usual!

    I have widened the string spacing at the nut on several guitars to increase ease of finger access and allow open strings to vibrate when wanted. The variety of neck widths can be accommodated by the same approach - to either widen or narrow string spacing. Any extra neck material at the sides of the fingerboard can be rolled to lessen interference (increase comfort).

    I recently got a jangly guitar myself and it's something I've been missing. It's a G&L Doheny, basically a Jazzmaster. Its thin sound is different than that of a Tele or Strat, but it's still firmly in single coil territory. Really digging the sound of Dan's new Johnny Marr Jaguar. I think the shorter scale can also contribute to inspiration as the different feel will nudge you to play a bit differently.
