The teaching is so awesome....people should remember that all these very verbal small adjustments which he gives can make you be more comfortable in a pose and actually realx in it. Very rarely u find people bending and being relaxed there. This kind of teaching is tough as u need to understand your very own body to give adjustments to people just sitting in a chair. Many teachers can't do it. Also the good things about his teaching is he never stops just with asana but take you deeper into pranayama and mediation, which is where Asana practice needs to lead you into it. If one does just Asana and just stays there it's like a river not flowing towards the ocean. Whoever is practising asanas everyday complete your practise with pranayama and follow it up with the practise of concentration which will eventually take u to meditation. Then asanas won't be just a therapeutic tool. Just telling out from my own experience. Do correct me if I got it wrong.

The early stages of pranayama are set up in working with the breathe in the movement of the asanas which is not taught in this system really. Real pranayama is a whole other story as well, but is much more than just manipulating your breath. He also misses some points here, like the fact that this pose is more about coming down instead of forward and the locus of the whole pose is the navel...

@bobo toblo , I am curious to know your version on you claiming that you have awakened your kundalini , etc etc in other comments down below and you saying that you can guide others and also you yourself can recognize true teachers or yogis. I agree with Sivananda etc , as true yogis but how come you mention Bikram??!! , he was a cheat , may be he had good knowledge on yoga ,but as a human he lacked any and all morals when he harassed some many of his pupils. Then how could you not recognize him for what he was ?

@@frankvazquez5974 I don't understand his instruction, how can the skin on your upper thigh be pulling backwards and the skin underneath your leg your hamstring be pulling forwards. Do you understand that.

I have a great respect for lyengar but frankly i have tried to practice paschimottanasana with these instructions. How do you stretch your back musckes towards the heel and the top towards the trunk ??? How??? It is frustrating...there is no mention of anteroversion/retroversion of the pelvis. Some teachers advice to inhale while bending forwards. Who is right?! It is very confusing. I will keep practicing. Om shanti 🙏

There are many different instructions and cues to try to get the students to adjust in the right way. If you're really interested in developing the small, but very important cues, then I recommend working with a quality Iyengar or alignment based Hatha teacher. The first few weeks half of what they say you may not understand or be able to do. However, if it's a good teacher the same cues will be given in numerous ways until one day it will click and your pose will forever be changed. With these small changes it will be the difference between slowly breaking the body down, or slowly building up the body with proper alignment.
If you start with your legs a little bent then straighten you knees from your hips, so your hips slide back (works only on floor), then you will feel what he means by taking you back of the thigh towards the hips. While doing this continue to stretch the heels away from you, and pull the front thighs and shins toward you.
You'll feel that the stretch of now even through the back leg and it will increase the space in your hips. This in turn allows you to have more length in your torso.

@bobo toblo There are no absolutes. There are quality asanas, and teachers, in all traditions of yoga. It's best to try to fully understand something before you regard it as inferior or talk it down. As for your attainments, it's best to keep those to yourself, one who has truly made progress on the spiritual path has no need to tell others of their attainments but rather will be humble and discuss areas they still struggle with.
I have never tried Bikram yoga, but I have worked with many styles of yoga with teachers of many traditions, and spent over a year in India learning about Yoga and spirituality. From my experience Iyengar teachers have given me the most depth of understanding of my body and taken me further in self mastery of the asanas than any other style of yoga regardless of the level of the teacher.
I am not saying you or anyone should only practice with Iyengar yoga, but rather that from my experience it has been the most beneficial and someone should give it a proper amount of time before disregarding it.
Your comments would be much more appreciated and would have more value if you took the time to properly understand the whole. The way you comment is a bit like a 10 year old on the playground at school...

It is amazing that all those asanas have to be taught. It means that the human being is unable to learn from his own body the things that he needs to know to keep top health throughout his/her life..? Or is it that we have forgotten this wisdom that has to be taught again...?? Catching ones toes should be a natural thing, just like swinging one's arms like in what is known in China as "shuai shou gong".... Kids are best at this as it seems that they are freer doing al kinds of poses that are found in yoga practice...Why should all this be a "specialty" while it could and should be something totally natural in keeping top psytchological and physical health??? Being aware of all your muscles and tendons and all the rest is everybody's personal quest and actual duty as humans...
    Regards to all

absolutely true and the same can be applied to nutrition. if we would be still connected with nature, living in and together with it, we would naturally eat all the good things we need and naturally avoid drugs.
      time to wake up! :)

Because in our daily activities, we are not using all muscle's evenly. It's a luxury to stay like an infant for lifetime. To make a living is the highest priority for most of us, that's the reason adults need Yoga to counter the movements of our daily activities.
