- Here it is, my playthrough of the very fun game, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on hardest. This game is infamous for it's difficulty, and it shows. This wasn't a "non game over" playthrough either, I just edited out the losing attempts for the sake of time. Unedited, this would be a much longer video. Also, this game looks like Puyo-Puyo and Kirby's Avalanche. Why? Because it was made by the same studio. Go look it up.

I love how almost all of your opponents are random background robots in the first episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog... it's almost kind of sad how, in many respects, they're better animated here than in the show.
And even sadder that you don’t see them anymore after the first episode

I like that they managed to get exactly one voice clip from the show in the game, for when Robotnik loses, and it actually doesn't sound too bad. Dunno why they couldn't do the same for his game over laugh, maybe space limitations
Yeah, that's probably it. It would also explain why his face doesn't change when he's close to losing, instead he just starts shaking his fist.
He also gives a rather distorted laugh if he beats you.

This game is my childhood (although technically I'm still a child since I'm 15 =p), my brothers got Sonic Mega Collection + for PS2 and they never played it, but I ALWAYS did. I actually played mean bean machine more than Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles combined despite them all being part of the collection! XD I would play my dad, whenever I could. I once pulled a 13 in a row combo on him! I played this game WAAAAAYYY too much! The Game gear version is also pretty cool, but I prefer this one just a little...
I don't even know if it's an actual voice, but my favorite is when the boulder beans fall and you hear the evil YO HO HO as they block your beans XD
I still think his game over laugh looks and sounds funny because this cartoon was so over exaggerated with all that stuff like a lot of 90s kid crackpot shows that may or may not have some points about life.

You have infinite continues, as I recall. So it's a matter of persistence and sometimes just plain luck.
Not to Mention this is Hardest Difficulty. i.e. Meant for players who know what they're doing.
This was one of my first games and I beat Normal at the age of 10 and Hard soon after, if I stuck to it, I would most likely have been able to do Hardest as well, but I had moved on to PuyoPyuo 2 by then, which was even harder than Dr Robotniks.

Games from back in ye olden days were short and had memory limitations but still costed a lot, and devs had concerns about kids beating them in a single rental period. They compensated by making them extremely difficult to beat.

I always thought the “death” screens were hilarious as a kid. I mean it would’ve been a missed opportunity if the dynamite robot DIDN’T blow himself up when he was defeated!

@Happyfaceproductions Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine is much better. I love the music, they took the best Songs from Puyo Puyo and with better Instruments like the drums. They made new songs too. I don't like the Puyo Puyo Anime like characters. It's a shame that Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine characrers aren't in Puyo Puyo Tetris.
It's not his fault he is designed like a dynamite stick.

This game was so awesome when you were on the brink of death against a crazy hard computer opponent and you pulled off a combo of 6 matching beans in a row to bury the other guy.

When a robot offers you a game of mean bean that's no good.
The message at the end of the credits drove me mental as a kid. It encourages you to try the harder difficulty every time, so what glorious message awaits you at the end? "Thank you for playing." And to think they did the same with Sonic Heroes years later.

Man the sound effects after the third chain in a combo were great, just using random explosion noises because lets face it if you get hit with a 4 combo chain in this game or higher you're not coming back from it. You also never want to see that big red bean above your refuse bean meter... Seeing it more often than not means you're dead.
I'm always saddened by the fact that there are so few remixes of this and PuyoPuyo music online.

Oh my gosh I had some good times with this game and honestly when I played Sonic Mania I had a smile on my face, despite never being able to get past the fourth level.
the music and style of this game is so dope. especially the song when you reach level 5. i don’t dislike any other puyo puyo games or their styles but this one is just killer

I have never actually played through this whole game on Hardest. But I have beaten Dr. Robotnik on Hardest with a password. Its how I taught myself to react quickly with what I have coming next. A tactic that angered in the family living room playing this game growing up.

I think i was 5 years old or younger when i played this game for the first time, i absolutely loved this game when i was a child, good times.
There should have been a stage 14 boss that can only be played on the hardest difficuilty where Robotnik accidently falls in his own machine and becomes Metal Robotnik and you have to fight him. He should be really hard to defeat,have 2 stages and should be able to get a 11x combo if you don't get enough combo's.

To think I would wind up revisting this thanks to it's surprise appearance in Sonic Mania! What happened Eggster? Here you were difficult as all hell; Mania he played worse than my 3 year old sister at the time!
I feel the difficulty curve in this game is off...
Personally I'd say with 1-100 difficulty (100 hardest)
Stage 1: it's stage 1, so nice and easy - 5
Stage 2: Actually quite challenging, it was jarring on my first play through - 50
Stage 3: Pips - 20
Stage 4: Laughable, I have no idea why coconuts makes those pillars, but thanks, I guess... - 10
Stage 5: Easy - 25
Stage 6: Seems so easy until out of nowhere they get a mega combo and fill your screen! Seriously, one time this guy got an 8 combo on me! I may have done a 13 before, but 1. I played this too much 2. That was pretty clutch 3. For a halfway computer 8 is ridiculous! I actually found this the hardest stage in the game, harder than the final boss! It's always worth to see that pink Patrick star fuck lose! - 95
Stage 7: Pips and fun - 20
Stage 8: Occasionally does a decent combo, rest of the time an idiot - 40
Stage 9: Laughable - 20
Stage 10: Computer is stupid though the speed got me on my first playthrough, still I never have any trouble with it anymore. - 45
Stage 11: Usually dumb, sometimes pulls an amazing combo outa nowhere - 55
Stage 12: Hard to kill, but pretty easy. If you're consistent, this should be pips... - 60
Stage 13: The speed is ridiculous but Robotnik is average at best. You can afford to make a couple mistakes so the speed isn' too threatening... - 65
Doublechindoge 7 coconuts wasn't _that_ bad. The pillars were weird but I've seen worse
I think the merit of the 'side pillar' strategy is that it's easier to recover from a heavy attack since the pillars can be cleared. Now, a no-fast-drop strategy? If you give your opponent time to build like that, they'll have a lethal combo lined up before you can get anything going.

I remember playing this game, but I kept getting stuck on the 2nd stage.
I always preferred this over Puyo and Kirby. The characters are unique and full of effort, so is the design.
I love the expression made by the badniks when they're about to lose!
This game when i learnt how to play it was the most funnest game I had ever played! Making combos & eliminating the clear beans sending them over to the opponent was such satisfaction! :P

Skweel was defeated and humiliated by his defeat that he decided he would no longer be a pig like robot so he had his nose removed and his body changed into a starfish. Being a robot, he was capable of breathing under water so he decided to live in the sea. He then found him self a rock in a town called Bikini Bottom and changed his name to Patrick Star. He's been happy ever since
