Hi Folks,
This is Dan, let me show you step by step on how I build stuff each week including my CB750 Cafe Racer & the (Honda Scrambler/Tracker build on a budget challenge) SUBSCRIBE to follow my future builds, I'm based in Australia.
=====================================================
It's this type of attention to detail that make your bikes so beautiful
Thank you so much John
3M Roloc discs on an angle grinder work very similar. I use the 2 inch blue (fine) for aluminum and the brown (coarse) for steel.
Then you can take it to another level with Bibielle 3" Roloc unitized discs...You won't believe your eyes. ;)
Aw man you are making me want a belt grinder even more now! Great helpful vid dude 👍
That is fantastic, it's a tool that you will get a tone of use out of, I wish I had one years ago
You can buy the scotchbrite belts in 520 x 20 to fit on a hand held air belt linisher. Similar results but so much easier to handle and get into all the difficult areas. I have removed the backing plates on my tool so it allows the belt to follow the radius better.
I use Glass bead blasting, it gives a great finish on alloy fork lowers (or engine cases or any alloy parts) and is a perfect base to polish it further.
I worked for my friend the famous street rod builder Dan Woods back in the day and all the parts we made had to be perfect and not the slightest nick or imperfection. Even if the spot could not even be seen installed. Our was the cleanest most organized shop ever plus he had 5 gal buckets of solvent clears in various spots in the shop in case the slightest drop of oil or grease feel on the concrete floor we’d grab a rag and clean it right away. It was noting but high profile customers and many builder friends of Dans that would pop in the shop almost every day like Little John Buttera , Steve Davis , Hershal “Junior” Conway Thevoiceofmusic best exotic car painter ever.
Some nice effects there! I will be painting my cylinder head and barrels black soon and now know the best way to achieve the shiny fins…..thank you! 👍
That's awesome and it will look so good once you are finished
For US based people, that belt grinder can be bought from Alec Steele Co.. He imports them and pairs it with 110v motor.
Superb, Dan… great fix for oxidized aluminum bits and bobs… good info about preserving the finish with oil!
🏍👍🏍
Thank you so much Gary, I used to always do this part off-camera, however, I thought it might be nice to show in its own video :)
@@CafeRacerGarage great idea… 😎
If you live somewhere they salt the roads in the winter you have to clearcoat any parts like this or they corrode really quickly.
Yes I can imagine, Fortunately for myself I don’t live anywhere where they sold the roads.
Wow, awesome work! This is really good to know. Pretty simple work to get that finish 💯💯
Thank you mate and yes its always simple when you know how, I love knowing my videos are helping you learn some now tricks :)
Hello, What's speedometer is? It looks very good! Thank you
Could you do this to paint? I want to paint my bikes tank bronze and do a brushed finish. Probably have to do it by hand though
Top finish, mate! Another reason to invest in a belt grinder. Ever use it on chromed piece i.e. exhaust pipe? Think that would brush up nice and also not rust?
I've not tried that but It could work
question I just used the green pad on my wife sportster alum rear rim to get rid of pitting. do I have to clear coat it now
you'll want to clear anodize them, at least clear lacquer very thin, OR clear ceramic coating
I did finish work for 18 years at a company in CT. We had belt sanders like this . But I have to say that is a nice machine.
But I will say one thing please and I mean please were a respirator I didn't and now I am suffering for it .
Ok thank you for the great safety tip
Awesome tooling Dan do they ship to the UK lol. Be a great addition to any shop , as it has been to yours . Great Sunday brekkie vid as always cheer
Thanx Gary, Yes I believe they ship everywhere. If you scroll to the bottom of 84 engineering web page you will find the 2 options for sellers
Lovely work 👍🏻 quick question, is the clear coat you refer to the same as you put on paint? Like the 2k clear stuff? Thanks
Pure skill. Like it a lot.
nice work you do , with all this mod's how do you get you're bike register , can you change a bike with out any problems with the law . i live in mel vic so l have a any axv750 82 , to build in to a cafe racer and you're video helps me see different ideas . thank you , keep up the good work ,
definitely check the rules and regulations for your state. 👍 thank you for the kind words.
So brushed metal finish is from brushing the metal? Who knew? But it deffo takes some skill to have it end up looking uniform over the whole work piece. You can't just go up and down it with a Scotchbrite disc and hope for the best.
It really looks amazing on the exhaust! Can't wait to see the next Project Video
Thank you mate
That's some cool work, where did you get that machine? I need one. Thanks for the video.
Just the video I was looking for, great job 👏
Looks great, Dan. I really like the tip about the oil. But if we don't have a belt grinder...what then?
You can clean with a disc on your drill just to clean it, but do the final pass by hand to get the best finish, Its time consuming and could come up nice if you spend enough time on it. Hope that helps Paul.
@@CafeRacerGarage got it. Thank you!
Clever you! Hey, what about building something else? A Motard! Take a 690 Duke and make a cool looker! Maybe into a flatracker? Or an adventure bike? Could be interesting!
Thank you mate , yes that's a good idea and would be fun
Which kind of clear coat do you use?
What kind of Clear Coat do you use?
Awesome finish brother 👍
I have hornet with custom exhaust it is painted black in colour and I always wonder if they looked like brushed aluminium it will be amazing.
Go for it mate Its worth the time it takes :)
Nice work sir
Good video , thanks ! What brand belt sander are you using ??
You should put the speed bracket up on your site, I'd buy one from ya
Speed bracket?
@@CafeRacerGarage sorry mate speedo* stupid auto correction 🤣
What clear ? Just normal 2K clear. Will it peal off the alloy ?
So, what if you don't have a belt grinder? If I needed one for a profession that would be fine. $3,000 in Australia.
Excelente video, ya se que maquina me quiero comprar ahora jaja. Saludos!
I'm going for that look on fuel tank, can you recommend a clear coat as the ones I've tried always cracked (didn't stick to bare metal)
It's not always easy to find but your automotive shops or a local paint shop can help with this, that's where I get my advice for stuff like this
Great video Dan, nice job mate. It's two for the 3M Roloc discs, I use all four from super fine to coarse. But that belt grinder look's a sweet bit of kit mate. Dan with your mig welder due you find 185 amp is all you the power you need for most job ? Ride safe and take care. Cheers
Thank you mate and yes 185 amps is all I've ever needed, doing heavy plate steel all day long is the only reason you would require something bigger
@@CafeRacerGarage Thanks for the reply Dan, much appreciated mate. Cheers
@@CafeRacerGarage 185 amps ?
How much did all the tools needed to do this cost?
Sheesh I have to get myself one of those belt grinders. Those pieces came out great and super clean, awesome job and thank you for this video!
(btw not to be an ass but I think it's finish* and not Finnish, cheers!)
Definitely a great investment and you won’t regret it :) also, thank you for the heads up on my typo mistake lol 😂 (only human)
Clear coat exhaust? Do you know of a clear coat that will hold up to that kind of heat?! I see you building all kinds of things and I wonder why you aren't doing the cerakote yourself. Is there a reason for that? Thanks! Oh one last thing, as far as the lower forks I use a big buffing wheel on a grinder but I have a friend who does vapor honing and everything comes out looking absolutely brand new! Have you tried Vapor honing some of those aluminum parts? Thanks again!
?
Here you go mate, My Vapor Blasing video ua-cam.com/video/irll13iwM8w/v-deo.html Yes Cerakote is great and might be the answer to your question, I will get into it at some point, just doing a lot of other things at the moment instead,
@@CafeRacerGarage I hear ya, it just seems like you like to try your hand at different things. I didnt know you already did some vapor honing stuff. You didnt like it?
Cheers.
@@danielbuckner2167 I had my Yamaha TTR230's forks vapor blasted (as we call it here in South Africa) You can search my YT channel to see the results.
@@DaveZee01 I know what vapor honing or vapor blasting or slurry blasting looks like finished. I have been seeing it for years now. I just wondered why he wasnt doing tht instead of using the belt sander.
Hi; great video. After grinding would the clear coat paint stick on the bars?
I think it is good idea, acrílico lacquer perhaps,,,
Cool nice
Dang, another product push, thought was tip to polish forks.
Get the Forks Aqua Blasted!
That's also something I can do and looks great :)
Awesome work. What part of Finland do you come from? Just joking - you have one too many Ns in your title.
Finland HAHAHA Thanks mate, I missed that typo so thanx for the heads up
supper job......were did you get the belt sander.?

@@CafeRacerGarage 👍
awesome
what are you clear coating with?
I use an automotive metal clear
Isn't it 'brushed'?
What do you clear coat it with?
an automotive metal clear
Not Everyone Have The Tools You Use!
$3000 for those belt grinders. You are better off buying an industrial version for a fraction of the $$
I've not used any other belt grinder but It would be hard to beat the quality of the ones from 84 engineering, I've seen them take a serious beating and not miss a beat, also the customer service is 2nd to none, I buy quality tools so I only need to buy them once, learned that from experience 👍 Have a great day mate
@@CafeRacerGarage that's cool. We all need to pay the bills I guess
The best tool for metal polishing is a credit card.
Great until I heard the Mickey Mouse music.
