- This is not your average vintage Volkswagen Beetle. This 1963 Bug body sits atop a fully custom tube chassis fitted with independent suspension all around and powered by a mid-mounted, air-cooled Porsche engine. Is it basically a Porsche Cayman? Let us know what you think.

Is this the ultimate VW Beetle?
Chromoly chassis... independent suspension... engine in the backseat... I'd say it's a competitor
That's not a Porsche engine. Thats a Jack Raby built VW Type 4 engine. The confusion probably came as a result of Raby building these units for Speedster replicas.
No, it isn't "basically a Porsche Cayman"! It is essentially a mid-engined "rail" with a Beetle body.
It is a VERY nice, well-engineered track day car. I just wish you hadn't misrepresented what it is.
I'm always hearing non-VW guys telling me "They put Porsche engines in those" when talking about custom Beetles, but there are very, very few real Porsche=powered VWs around. Mainly because it is cheaper and easier to bore and stroke the 4cyl. VW motor and get Porsche=level horsepower figures.
No wonder something wasn't right, then I watched again and saw the 4 barrels and the distributor. Like when the later VW van owners say "it has a Porsche engine in it, (914? ). I agree, you can get more HP and it's cheaper than a porsche. But as a Porsche owner, there is nothing like a Porsche; even a 356.
@@michaelalfonso1070 I agree. you might get a Beetle to keep up with a Porsche in a straight line drag race, but add some twisty bits and the bug would be left in the dust:) I'm a VW beetle owner but I've had friends own Porsches over the years and they are indeed fantastic machines.
@@martinharris5017 I had a 57 356A (and a 71 VW Camper) in high school and dad was the original owner of a 67 bug, my brother had a High Performance VW engine shop. He owned several air cooled VW's, his fav was a 59 Convertable Ghia. He did a friends 67 Ghia that did low 16's at the quarter mile and got 28 MPG. Pretty good for a self taught mechanic, (he taught the Auto Shop teacher in high school about VW's). I miis the 70's!

I'm a VW guy, I have a modified VW Beetle and it pisses me off when someone says, Ohh you put a Porsche engine in it. The hell I did. I have a fully built vw engine with everything chromoly 4340 inside. I do have Porsche suspension and brakes installed. Well partially installed, I'm working on it. :)

it’s not a porsche engine, not a 911 or 356 anyway. the type 4 came in the 914 with higher output then the type 4 that came in busses, but not tons more lol

Amusing to see all the "that's not a Porsche engine" comments. If the engine came from the factory in a 914 Porsche then it's a Porsche engine.

Sorry I n Europe it was sold as a VW Porsche
In the US it was sold by Porsche Audi dealerships and to not confuse Americans it was sold as a Porsche. It was built in a VW factory, not leased or any way shape or form owned by Porsche.
It was originally to be a joint venture project, but management changed at VW and the price for the raw chassis as sold by VW to Porsche for 914 6 substantially increased.
Porsche Audi in th US bought the 914 4 from VW

@Grady Turner the 914 used a type 4 motor, the 912E used a type 4.
4 cyl Porsche motors start out at a much hig h er price and parts are much higher so it is highly unlikely it is a Porsche engine
I wonder that too why people want to call a type 4 VW engine a Porsche engine.
@@larrybrinley8222 The people that call it a Porsche engine want to say they have a Porsche engine in their VW. Those engines were built by VW and shipped to the line building the 914 or 912E.
