swapping a subaru legacy engine into a volkwagen beetle using a kep adapter plate. lots of cutting, grinding, bolts, wrenching, and modifications needed. this is an engine conversion for swapping motors. basically an engine swap. i'm using a turbo because i love boost, and the ej22 is the best subaru engine. sti and wrx engines like the ej20 and ej25 are known for having head gasket problems and other issues, so I went with the ej22t. i'll need to upgrade the stock wheels and tires, as well as the clutch, but that will need to be done later. for now i'm using the stock transmission. i needed to cut a hole for the turbo and i'll need to create a custom downpipe.

Tools you'll need: 1 Baby monitor, Metric ratchet set, Impact gun ...
This x100!!!! That's where all my time and money goes lol
@@VelocityLabs thanks for the great video!
@@VelocityLabs aww man I was wondering what happened, loved the eclipse videos!
Ok it’s been 4 years. I think we all deserve an update! Ha! Cmon just ONE episode for old times sake. 😅
Good to see you and Bugford again. Congrats on the baby, and hope that this project doesn't sit for too long.
I have a suggestion, when you get to that stage, for dealing with the turbo heat, make a double firewall, with a minimum of 1/2" air gap between the sheet metal. Its basically a thermos. It'll take some bending and welding, but you can make a really good insulated pocket around the turbo, and it'll prevent like 80% of the heat from transferring inside the cabin. Build it like 4" past the turbo on all the sides you can. then you can use your peel n seal and heat barrier and not worry about liquefying the butyl black goop of the peel n seal.
That's an awesome idea, thanks!!
Playing the 'Hallelujah Chorus' from Handel's Messiah, as you sawed through the fire wall, that's the sounds of victory, fantastic. Thanks great video!
It was unbearable, I watched the rest of the video without sound.
Was thinking I hadn't seen anything of yours for a long time and then noticed no uploads for 2 years. Where ever you are hope life is treating you well.
Its lovely to see you back, I really enjoy your videos
I have no intention of ever building a Subaru-powered bug. But I watched this whole thing. 😅
Looks like a nice "Saturday Afternoon" project. Thanks for uploading!
Gives a whole new perspective to "Let er rip! 😁
I saw there was a Ford solenoid under the bug above the starter, perfect for anti theft device when you wire a switch that you wire to the starter as a kill switch. Following and sharing! ✌
I looooooooove the cutting for the turbo, the video is amazing, subscribing
Finally! VL is back!!!
Brotato. What happened man. Love your videos! Wish you the best. Hope to see more content soon
I hope you come back soon, man!! I wanna see more 1G content. I just got my 1990 GST running... it still needs a lot of work tho.. But man I wish I had yours. It's AWD, and you've already replaced most things. lol
Loving the project car I like to see more videos on this as a little mini service keep up good work 😁
I'm surprised at how many people don't take pictures during disassembly. I saw you snap a few pics of the wiring. My project took so long, I had to flip through physical photos of the old parts.
Wiring isn't all that difficult, it's just intimidating. Break each system down into its parts, and it's pretty easy. I have some pieces of my own harness mod that I should splice together for the interwebs.
Agreed. Wiring looks intimidating when its de-loomed. But if you have the wiring diagram, and label each plug you need, then its not that bad. I'm going to be building a new harness eventually for my 2012 caprice, that's getting an LSA clone, with a totally different ECU that is has now. So I'll be combining 3 harnesses, and re-terminating nearly everything, one off a ZL1 Camaro, my current L77 harness, and my transmission harness.
i'm SOOO in for this!
Great video 🎰🥂 we definitely say do more installs 🔥🔥🔥
Welcome back! My god it’s been a while old friend
This is awesome! I imagine when I start my project it will take this long (I hope not but you know how these things go!) New subscriber, keep up the good work bro!
Thanks!
Sooooo did this ever get finished?
For me the little car is the best car ever make, in mexico still running
I'm not sure if this something you are interested in, bit if you happen to be stuck taking care of the kiddo and can't really take your eyes off'm, could you maybe maybe do a FAQ video or give advice on tuning? Just some ideas for content and getting a little money in your pocket. Idk if this manageable to multi task like this but that's my 2 cents. Glad you're back👍
Please please please keep this going! As someone who's owned seven first gen turbo legacy's and a Subaru mechanic who has a friend wanting me to do this to their bug I want more videos!
I've been slowly working on it but budget is an issue, I have no money for car parts lol I'll have new stuff eventually!
Hey man hope all is good! Got any updates on the 2g? Keep up the awesome vids man!
Minute 9:20, was that a Fart ?? 🤣😂🤣
Now that's a cool swap
That is a perfect fit! Awesome!
There’s a kid who drives one of these to my school, it is the sickest thing I’ve ever seen 🤤
At C of O?
An EJ22 swapped bug?
@@Mahalo_83 idk if it’s an ej22 but it is a turbo Subaru 4 banger

I like this project!
I like your beard! :P
This is great and all absolutely love it did you eventually going to have change a transmission out and if you could I try to get a Porsche transmission
Right when i saw the baby i had to hit like, congrats Bro!
Mighty car mods also did this cool swap brother
KEP adapter owner... check the factory flywheel bolt length v new flywheel. OEM flywheel was THICKER than kep flywheel and therefor bolts were a few mm too long. this caused crank and flywheel to friction weld themselves together.
(was not a subaru engine fyi)
You ever get around to the wiring? Great video!!
You are very talented! You need to keep going ( hard to find time with a baby...). You will be a great host for a tv show one day!
Keep going!
the clutch after the adapter plate is from the bug, right? so its like subaru engine - adapterplate - adapterplate flywheel - bug clutch - bug transmission..?
At the starter you can also use a lenkey bolt
i have an engine and transmission from a 2016 subaru wrx is possible to install the set up on my 74 super beetle?
I do believe the EJ22T comes close decked from factory ?
Where is the project. Can you explain how is reverse gear kit suparu work
I really hope your using the subigears type 1 adapter. And a kaferbar. Your gonna bend the framehornevfrom weight and your gonna wreck clutch every month if you aren’t supporting front of motor with plate. Call Kennedy and ask. They stress not to just do this setup your gonna run into major issues
Mick sold his car in like a month so he never ran into these issues
Gonna be watching as of today.
How come there hasn't been any recent uploads anymore? I was digging the content of the DSM
I’m buying one of two cars a 1gen TSI AWD both for $3500 the 1st one is a rebuilt motor with 20k on it with 450hp and a lot of Cx racing parts wb455 injectors 1150cc......or a fresh rebuilt motor bore .40+ with just a 16g turbo for upgrade and everything else more less stock... that you think Best Buy or what to do get ?????
Sucks when something drops, like at 9:49, but then you hear it hit the floor. At that moment it's the only thing you want to hear!!! 😁
Powerfull engine 🔥
When is part 2 coming this was 7 months ago..
What adapter kit did you use?
It is much easier to cut out the firewall and move it forward. Then you have created a space to put the radiator (with two pull thru fans).
its been 4 years any update?
any update as to when the second part of this is coming out? This series is definitely going to help guide me so i’m looking forward to it!
Not until March 2021 at the earliest. I'm currently shooting and editing videos!
Ahhh it’s late
where did you buy the adapter plate
Thanks for video
That sedan trans is not long for this world. Driving conservatively and not breaking anything I get 2 seasons out of a bus trans before the main shaft bearing is wasted. Gotta love Subaru’s lol
For sure! I'm saving up for the reversed gear set to do a subaru trans!
Loving it . BUT , what does one do about the wiring Incase you can't send it to someone?
Cry, then start learning and do it yourself.
No new rear main seal?
Please continue Turbo EJ22 in my BUG! Install Part 02
excuse me, if it's on the swab engine rb26can you?
Hey man. I’ve tried searching and I dont see any more vids on the bug. You ever get it worked out? Curious about your coolant plumbing setup too
I saw an Instagram comment he made a few years ago the car is complete, but he has been very busy raising his baby. didn't say if he was releasing more videos. don't know what he did but most guys run radiators DeLorean front style while some run side mount half rads.
So when are you uploading the next video
Old Subarus, old VWs, fart jokes.....Subscribed.
Thanks! : D
loved the video .. too bad it never came another
when are ya coming back ?! We all miss you!
He Botha amazing videos
Where did you go? It’s been 7 months
Working on videos! I'm getting a bunch done before I start releasing again.
@@VelocityLabs awesome can’t wait
Any updates?
Taking a longer hiatus than even I usually do! Doing alright man?
Yep, just queuing up 52 videos to release 1 per week for a year!
@@VelocityLabs Sounds amazing!
@@VelocityLabs LOL.
please more updates
Are there any engine options where you don't have to cut anything?
yes, i'm pretty sure the non-turbo EJ22 fits without cutting
Wow a lot of cables
Still kind of salty a first gen Legacy was harmed in the making of this production, but I'll get over it. Nice stache!
Speaking of first, jack up your car, MCM's first vid to hit 10M views is Project Daisy the STI powered sleeper Bug.
Hopefully this project does well for your channel too. Good progress. Looking forward to more as always.
Me watching the whole video and can't even afford a beetle yet 💀 0:58
Watch Mighty Car Mods they did it with an ej25 tubo
Had time for any more progress yet?
What adapter did you use?
German car with a Japanese engine . These are metric cars ! Torque figured in N/M distance in mm please 😆
Fun seeing the real life stuff that happens when you don't have more money to throw at something than you know what to do with. Bummer about the harness.
hey man ! stil got your Dsm HX35 ???
Part 2 etc???
When will you come back
You still working on your bug and eclipse?
Where are the subsequent parts to this series?
Hopefully coming soon. I've been slowly working on it but budget is an issue, I have no money for car parts lol
Still waiting for your return!
Any other parts?)) One part per decade? ))
Are y’all still around
KEP?
Part 2?
Dude awesome vid ! I've got my engine in and running. What are you thinking about steering , mine drives really bad , not sure where to go now. I've changed all the suspension on the bug along with new springs etc , all the steering etc bushes underneath are poly , new wheels tyres etc. It's a bit erratic , so looking for coaching on how to get it under control. Thanks dude
Nice!! I have NO IDEA lol , mine isn't evening running yet so I'm sure I'll have the same problems as you. If you figure anything out let me know! Do you have an instagram or anything I can follow?
Probably not enough weight in the front of the car. You're putting a big heavy engine with tons more horse power in the back and the beetle just wasn't designed for that.
put a couple sandbags where the spare tire goes LOL that should level out the weight distribution
Hey Eric where'd you go man? Dont even see ya one Tuner's anymore. Going to be dropping some content soon?
I'm on tuners every day lol. I'm queuing up a bunch of videos, it'll be at least 6 months before i start releasing.
@@VelocityLabssweet deal cant wait man! Tuners said you hadn't been active for well over a month if I remember correctly so I was like "what happened to Eric?"
Good by ring and pinion
Did you ever finish the build???
Not yet, it's going slowly due to lack of money lol
Hey where you at? Newd more bugford videos.
I've been slowly working on it but budget is an issue, I have no money for car parts lol Hopefully soon!
@@VelocityLabs Just wanted to make sure you are well.
so, when is part two coming out?
I've been slowly working on it but budget is an issue, I have no money for car parts lol
@@VelocityLabs ahah i know the struggle! parts are expensive and time invested in the car is time not making money, so a double loose. The most important thing is that you enjoy it!
NEXT: How to fix a warped chassis 😂
Don’t stop
You good, bro?
You coming back?
I was hoping for a part 2 myself.
Did you pass wind @9:22??😅 and say “ I farted”?
good jobbbbbb
